MAGELLAN MSS UNIVERSAL BRACKET INSTALLATION (FOR DIRECTV & DISH NETWORK) The Universal Bracket (sometimes referred to a “Bird-on-the-Wire” or BOW) will allow a Direcway dish customer to watch DirecTV at the same time they are surfing the Internet. The Universal Bracket is just an LNB that connects the customers DirecTV receiver to the MSS. Before you perform an installation, you must be aware of which DirecTV satellite the customer is using. The Universal Bracket Kit will connect the customer to a wide variety of TV satellites, the most common is DirecTV satellite 101. The first step in installation is to raise the satellite dish, and then unplug both the MSS and the Direcway Satellite Modem. You do not want to install a Universal Bracket if the dish is active in any way. Next, you will need to determine which side of the dish arm you will attach the bracket to.

The Universal Bracket is connected to the B side of the dish arm in this picture.
Sometimes you may only need to use the lipstick LNB shown here as the small circle just left of the larger Direcway LNB. This is used if you only need to look 2 degrees off for the TV signal.
Below is a listing of Direcway satellites, and the location (or marker) used for positioning the LNB on the Universal Bracket. Sometimes the customer’s current DirecTV satellite receiver will not work because it is too many degrees offset from their Direcway satellite. In this case, you will need to switch a customers DirecTV service to a different DirecTV satellite.

Once you’ve determined if you’re using the “A” bracket or “B” bracket, find the mounting plate (with the A or B marked on it)… and attach it to the bracket. (Directions for the Lipstick installation are later in this manual).
You will use three screws to attach either the “A” or “B” plate to the bracket. These screws (and all other needed hardware) come with the universal kit.
Now remove the screws that hold the shroud onto the dish arm.
You will also need to remove the two screws that hold the thin aluminum roller bracket in place.
Under the white plastic shroud you just removed, there will be a loose coax connector to use for your TV connection.
Later on, you will run a coax cable from this coax connector on the base of the MSS dish to the DirecTV receiver inside of your vehicle.
You will be placing the bracket on top of the screw holes as shown above. When attached, the bracket should be perfectly flush with the white plastic.
Use the provided washers to help make the area flush for when you attach the bracket… (See next frame)
Note how the washer will make the bracket lie flush against the white plastic.
Tighten the screws that hold the bracket into place.
Next, assemble the LNB with the hardware as shown. There are only 2 screws
that hold the 3 part assembly onto the LNB.
Note how the assembly attaches to the LNB. The 2 screws that hold everything in place are screwed into
the narrow plate at the bottom of the assembly. Keep the screws very loose… you’ll see why in the next frame.
Now slide the LNB assembly onto the opening of the bracket. There is a slot just large enough to slide the narrow plate into.
The LNB should move back and forth freely on the bracket.
The marking on the bracket show you where you should slide the LNB to.
Here, the LNB is lined up on Mark 10. Tighten the 2 Phillips screws to secure the LNB assembly into place.
Now use a bit of Di-Electric Grease (found at any auto parts store) and use it to create a water tight fitting for the coax connection.
Use liberal amounts of Di-electric grease in the Coax connector.
Attach the Coax to one of the two LNB ports (It does not matter which one you choose). Wipe away any excess grease with a towel. Push some Di-Electric grease up the other connector so that it isn’t exposed.
Next step… use tie straps to keep all of your cables in place.
Secure the coax cable so that it is as secure as possible. Final step… run a coax cable from the base of the Magellan to the DirecTV satellite IN port of the DirecTV receiver inside of the vehicle. Test to make sure you can get a good TV signal.
Here is the complete Universal mount in an upright position. The Universal mount stows neatly with the MSS.

INSTALLING THE LIPSTICK LNB
The Lipstick LNB allows you to see a DirecTV satellite that is only 2 degrees offset from the main Direcway satellite.
This is the Lipstick LNB… named because it looks like a tube of lipstick where the DirecTV signal enters.
You will be installing the lipstick LNB under the brown bracket. You will need an Allen wrench to remove the 2 screws (one is already loosened in this picture)
Also, you will need to temporarily remove the GPS sensor from the dish arm to install the LNB.
The GPS Sensor is attached to the Dish Arm with Velcro. Simply pull off the sensor. You will push it back into place after you’ve installed the lipstick LNB.
Loosen the 2 Allen screws. And remove the bracket, as well as the white plastic spacer
(shown in the last picture).
Slide the lipstick LNB into place. Use the supplied 4 screws to secure the LNB into place.
You can only use 3 of the four screws to secure the LNB into place. The 4th hole is blocked by the bracket. This is not an issue however as the lipstick LNB is quite secure.
Now place the GPS sensor back into place. Push down on the sensor so that you hear it “SNAP” into place. Pull on it slightly to make sure it is secure.
Now connect the Coax to the either one of the LNB coax ports. Make sure you use Di-Electric Grease inside of the connector for a waterproof seal.
You will need to cut a hole in the white plastic shroud before you replace it. There is a slight scoring on the surface of the plastic that you can bring out by rubbing a pencil over the score. This will help you cut the hole.
Use a box cutter to cut the plastic along the pencil markings. Take your time. No need to hurt yourself or the shroud
