The Dragons will take to the road again this week for two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games against Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State. The Dragons face the Cougars at 8 p.m. on Friday and the Mustangs at 6 p.m. on Saturday. MSUM picked up another two victories last week with wins over NSIC opponents Mary and Minot State on the road. The Dragons are two games ahead of Northern State (7-3) in the NSIC North Division and tied with Augustana for the best record in the conference at 9-1. MSUM moved up one spot to No. 12 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll. In addition, the Dragons are ranked No. 4 in the latest edition of the Bennett Rankings. Live stats and live online video for the games can be found at msumdragons.com. First up, MSUM travels south to face Sioux Falls on Friday night. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. following the completion of the women’s game. In six all-time match ups between the two schools, MSUM holds a 4-2 advantage. Since joining the NSIC in 2012, the Dragons and Cougars have split the two games against each other. On Jan. 18, 2013, the Dragons defeated Sioux Falls 80-53 in Moorhead. Then- sophomore guard Jordan Riewer scored 13 points while then-freshman guard Tyler Vaughan chipped in 11 points off the bench for the Dragons. Last year, on Jan. 3, 2014, the Cougars beat the Dragons 92-70 in a game played in Sioux Falls, S.D. This season, Sioux Falls is 7-9 overall and 4-6 in the NSIC. The Cougars won five of seven games between Dec. 6 and Jan. 3, but dropped both games they played on the road last week, falling to Winona State and Upper Iowa. Senior guard Charles Ward leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game and is coming off a career high 28-point performance against Upper Iowa. Next, MSUM will match up against Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Dragons hold the advantage in the all-time series between the two schools at 52-38. In the last 10 match ups dating back to 2009, the two schools have split the games right down the middle, 5-5. Last season on Jan. 4, 2014, the Mustangs narrowly escaped with a victory in Marshall, MN, 70-68. Then- juniors Jordan Riewer and Urbane Bingham both scored 17 points for MSUM in the loss. This season, the Mustangs are 9-7 and 5-5 in the NSIC. Like Sioux Falls, the Mustangs went on a run in the middle of their schedule, winning five of six games between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, but recently dropped their last two games to Upper Iowa and Winona State last week. Sophomore forward Joey Bartlett leads the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game. A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK MSUM hit the road last week for the first time in nearly a month of action and came away with two victories over Mary and Minot State. The two wins vaulted the team’s record to 18-1 and 9-1 in the NSIC. On Friday night, the Dragons had four players score in double-digits, including sophomore guard Aaron Lien who scored 20 points to lead the Dragons to an 81-52 rout of Mary. The Dragons continued their impressive shooting ways in the game, hitting 46.7 percent (28- of-60) of shots from the field and 44.4 percent (12-of- 27) from the three-point line. The Dragons opened the game on a 5-0 run and never trailed in the contest. MSUM hit its first six 3-pointers of the second half and built a commanding 56-32 lead with 13:51 left, thanks to a 19-6 run to open the second half. Lien was the catalyst during that stretch with 10 points while senior guard Jordan Riewer had six after draining two 3-pointers. On Saturday, junior guard Tyler Vaughan, junior forward Isaac Sevlie, and Riewer combined to score 59 points as MSUM blew past Minot State 71-56. Vaughan scored a season high 21 points as Sevlie chipped in 20 and Riewer contributed 18. The Dragons outshot their opponent for the 16th time in 19 games, shooting 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field compared to 43.1 percent (22-of-51) for the Beavers. WHAT’S AHEADMOORHEAD, Minn.--The Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team (18-1, 9-1 NSIC) has matched its best start to a season through 19 games, matching the 18-1 mark of the 1970-71 Dragons. The Dragons will take to the road again this week for two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games against Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State. The Dragons face the Cougars at 8 p.m. on Friday and the Mustangs at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

MSUM picked up another two victories last week with wins over NSIC opponents Mary and Minot State on the road. The Dragons are two games ahead of Northern State (7-3) in the NSIC North Division and tied with Augustana for the best record in the conference at 9-1. MSUM moved up one spot to No. 12 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll. In addition, the Dragons are ranked No. 4 in the latest edition of the Bennett Rankings.

DRAGONS RANKED FIRST IN SEVEN NSIC CATEGORIES

•Senior guard Jordan Riewer reached two milestones this season that will cement his place in Dragon history forever. •The Dragon point guard surpassed 1,000 points in his career on Jan. 2 in the win over Upper Iowa. Riewer is the 27th player in Dragon history to reach the 1,000-point club and the first since Alex Novak entered the exclusive club in 2013 with 1,219 points. Through Saturday, Riewer now has 1,054

career points.•The 6-2 guard passed Ralph Western’s school record of 339 assists on Jan. 3 in the win over Winona State. Riewer dished out a career high nine assists on Jan. 2 and followed it up with eight on Jan. 3. Riewer now has 359 career assists.•For the season, Riewer is eighth in the NSIC in scoring at 16.1 points per game, second in three-point field goals made per game at 2.8, second in assists per game at 5.8, and first in assist to turnover ratio at 4.8.

•Junior forward Isaac Sevlie has stepped up for the Dragons over the last two weeks, averaging 17.5 points, six rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game in his last four games.•In wins over Winona State and Upper Iowa, Sevlie set career highs in points, rebounds, offensive rebounds, field goals, and free throws made, earning him NSIC North Divi-sion Player of the Week honors. The Red Wing, Minn. native scored 18 points on a

career high seven field goals made in the win over Upper Iowa. In the win over Winona State, the 6-foot-9 power forward set career highs in points (21), rebounds (eight), offensive rebounds (five), minutes (28), field goal attempts (12), free throws made (11), and free throw attempts (13). In arguably his best night as a Dragon, Sevlie blocked two shots and grabbed a steal as well.•Sevlie scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds, and blocked two shots in MSUM’s victory over Mary. The Dragon forward reached 20 points for the second time in his career, scoring 20 points in the win over Minot State. Sevlie was 7-of-11 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line while grabbing five rebounds and blocking three shots.•For the season, Sevlie is averaging 12.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Sevlie ranks seventh in the NSIC in field goal percentage at 57.5 percent and second in blocked shots per game at 1.6.

•The Dragons rank in the top-10 in the na-tion as a team in 10 different categories:•1st in Total Three-Point Field Goals Made: 210. Jordan Riewer leads the team with 54 while Aaron Lien has 40.•1st in Turnovers per game: 8.2. The Dragons have turned the ball over eight or fewer times eight times this season.•1st in Total Assists: 318. Jordan Riewer has 110 assists this season.•1st in Assist to Turnover Ratio: 2.05.

Jordan Riewer ranks second in the nation with a mark of 4.78.•2nd in Total Three-Point Field Goal Attempts: 491. On average, the Dragons shoot 25.8 three-pointers per game.•3rd in Total Rebounds: 691. Aaron Lien leads the team with 94 rebounds.•5th in Scoring Margin: 20.2. •Three Dragons combined to outscore Minot State on Saturday night. In the Dragons 71-56 victory, junior guard Tyler Vaughan, junior forward Isaac Sevlie, and senior guard Jordan Riewer combined to score 59 points to lead the Dragons past the Beavers.•Vaughan scored a season high 21 points (16 in the second half) in the game on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 shoot-

ing from the three-point line. The 21 points is the most Vaughan has scored in a game since Feb. 22, 2014 when Vaughan scored a career high 26 in an overtime win over Mary.•Sevlie scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. 11 of Sevlie’s 20 points came in the first half. The Dragon forward also grabbed five rebounds and blocked three shots in the game.•Riewer scored 18 points (14 in the second half) on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 shooting from the three-point line, and 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line. Riewer also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists in the win.

Currently, the Cougars are 7-9 overall and 4-6 in the conference, sitting at seventh place in the NSIC South Division. Sioux Falls won five of seven games between Dec. 6 and Jan. 3, defeating Winona State, Mary, Mounty Mary, Southwest Minnesota State, and Wayne State during that stretch. In a stretch between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, the Mustangs won five of six games including four of its first five NSIC contests. The Mustangs defeated Sioux Falls, Winona State, Mary, and Minot State to open the NSIC season. Last week, SMSU lost to Upper Iowa and Winona State.•Sophomore forward Joey Bartlett leads the team in scor-ing with 14.5 points per game and is second in rebound-ing with 5.4 per game. Bartlett is shooting 45.2 percent (84-of-186) from the field and 40 percent (36-of-90) from the three-point line.•Sophomore forward Mitch Weg leads the team in

points in the loss to Upper Iowa.•Ward leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 18.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. His mark of 18.4 points per game is good enough to be ranked fourth best in the con-ference. COACHING BIOIn his first four seasons as head coach, Chad Walthall has led the Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team to unparalled heights. Having completed his fourth season in 2013-14, the Dragons are poised to continue as a formidable program in the rugged NSIC and region.That successful run -- one of the biggest turnarounds in all of Division II -- in Walthall’s first four years includes a first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1965, the most wins by any coach in his first four years at MSUM (76), and the best three-year stretch in the program in more than three decades (61 wins). The stretch also saw MSUM win its first conference title since 1981-82 when the Dragons won the NSIC North Division title in 2013-14.During the past three seasons, MSUM has averaged 20 wins per season and has won five NSIC tournament games during that time span. Prior to Walthall’s arrival, MSUM had won just two NSIC tournament games since 2000.Known for his ability to rebuild collegiate programs, Walthall has done just that at MSUM and has the Dragons poised to be a contender for years to come. Taking over a team that was 10-17 prior to his ar-rival, Walthall, in his second season at MSUM, took the Dragons to the NCAA tournament, recording a first-round win and advancing to the NCAA regional semifinals. In four years, he has compiled a record of 76-41 -- an average of 19 wins per season. In the previous three seasons prior to Walthall’s arrival, MSUM averaged 11 wins.Walthall has never had a losing record in conference play in 11 years as a collegiate head coach.The success continued in 2013-14 as Walthall guided a young Dragon team with just two seniors to the NSIC North Division title and to the program’s second 20-win season in the past three years. The Dragons were the only NSIC team to beat regional qualifiers Minnesota State, Mankato (which was ranked 11th in the nation at the time) and Winona State during the regular season.Senior guard Tarell Clark and junior guard Jordan Riewer earned All-NSIC honors. MSUM was ranked in the top 30 in several statistical categories throughout the season.In 2012-13, MSUM continued its progression under Walthall with a 19-11 mark, reaching the 19-win mark for the second consecutive year. That included a thrilling 78-74 win over No. 11-ranked St. Cloud State and an eight-game winning streak. The Dragons earned a first-round home game in the Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference tournament for just the second time in school history -- the first being in Walthall’s second year in 2011-12 -- and earned an 87-78 win over SMSU to advance.Senior Alex Novak also set MSUM career records in blocks (223) and rebounds (1,054) during Walthall’s first three years. Novak also earned Capital One/CoSida Academic All-America first-team honors in 2013, becoming the first Dragon student-athlete to achieve the honor in four years, and the first men’s basketball player since 1996 to do so. Novak was first team All-NSIC, while senior Anthony Tucker earned All-NSIC second-team honors.In 2011-12, Walthall guided MSUM to a 21-10 mark and led the Dragons to the NCAA tournament. Not only did MSUM advance to the NCAA Tournament, but they earned a first-round win, an 82-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State, to advance to the second round.The Dragons started the year with an 11-0 mark, their best start since 1971. They were ranked as high as 16th in the nation, the first time MSUM has been ranked in program history. The team also beat Division I foe North Dakota State, 90-84 in an exhibition game to start the season.In Walthall’s first season in 2010-11, he proved he was more than capable of rebuilding the Dragon bas-ketball program. In 14 years prior to his arrival, the program had won only 40 percent of its games and posted just two winning conference seasons. Walthall, who has had winning league records in each of his 11 years as a collegiate head coach, led the Dragons to their first overall (15-12) and NSIC (12-10) winning seasons since 2002-2003.Prior to arriving at MSUM, Walthall was an assistant coach at Iowa of the Big Ten from 2007-10. While on the Hawkeye coaching staff, he assisted in recruiting Iowa’s 2010 recruiting class which was ranked 20th in the nation and third in the Big Ten, by Van Coleman. Walthall also served as interim Head Coach for the Hawkeyes for four games, while Head Coach Todd Lickliter was sidelined due to health reasons.Walthall’s head coaching experience has a history of rebuilding basketball programs. In 2000 he was hired as Head Basketball Coach at Loras College. He served seven seasons (2000-07) becoming the third win-ningest coach in school history. He also served as Director of Athletics from 2004-07.Walthall was named 2006-07 Iowa Intercollegiate Conference (IIAC) Coach of the Year while leading the Duhawks to a 15-1 conference record and the IIAC title. Along with achieving regular season success, Walthall led Loras to its first IIAC tournament title and first NCAA tournament berth in school history. His seven-year mark at Loras was 116-69..Walthall took over the Loras program after serving as assistant coach at Eastern Michigan for two years (1998-2000) and St. Olaf College for four years (1994-98). He was head coach at Redwood Valley High School for one season (1993-94) and a graduate assistant coach at St. Cloud State University for two years (1991-93). While at St. Cloud State he also served as head coach for a Collegiate All-Star team that traveled to Europe.Walthall attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., earning a bachelor’s degree in Physical Educa-tion and Health in 1991. While at Saint Cloud State he earned his master’s degree in Athletics Administra-tion (1993). As a collegiate athlete at Concordia, Walthall played quarterback and was part of two Min-nesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) football championships. He earned all-conference honors in that sport as a junior and senior. He also served as a student assistant basketball coach.As a high school athlete in Staples, Minn., Walthall was team captain and three-year starter in football, basketball and baseball, earning numerous All-Conference honors.Walthall is a native of Staples, Minn. and currently resides in Moorhead. He and his wife, Jenni, have four children, a daughter Brooke (14), twin sons Brady and Blake (12), and son Beau (eight).

COACHING NOTES•On December 2, 2014, Chad Walthall earned win No. 200 in his career in a 111-40 win over Pre-sentation College. The win was his 84th as Head Coach of MSUM.•Walthall was named Head Coach of MSUM in May of 2010, becoming the 13th Men’s Basket-ball Coach in the 46 year history of the program. 2014-15 is his 27th year in coaching and the 25th at the collegiate level.• Walthall spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa prior to arriving at MSUM.• Spent seven season as head coach for Loras Col-lege from 2000-2007, where he went 116-69.• Served as assistant coach at Eastern Michigan for two years and St. Olaf for four.• Graduate Assistant at St. Cloud State for two years.
