nce the richest town in colonial ahang during its tin-mining glory days,
Sungai Lembing’s silent streets today echo the demise of the town following the collapse of global tin prices in 19 6. JOHOR LAKSAA unique feature of Johor laksa is its use of spaghetti noodles instead of conventional white rice noodles, served in a spicy, milky broth made of coconut milk, fried spices, minced fish, garnished with Thai basil, mint leaves, daun kesum (polygonum or Vietnamese coriander), cucumber, bean sprouts and occasionally fresh cockles. The Lee Kee Johore Laksa stall first opened in 1946 and uses a tested laksa recipe that’s been handed down from as early as post-World War 2 Johor Bahru. TRY IT AT: i. Any day of the week, rain or shine, locals and tourists will be flocking to roadside stalls and food courts in search of the delicious noodle broth dish known as laksa. Experts agree that there are two types of laksa: curry and assam. Curry laksa is made up of a broth base of coconut milk and spices, while assam laksa sports a sour, tamarind fish-soup base. Both are served with generous helpings of tofu, bean sprouts, seafood, chilies, slices of boiled egg, vegetables, and other goodies. The laksa noodles can be thick, white rice noodles, yellow wheat noodles, or the thinner, vermicelli noodles. The various laksa types are extremely popular in countries like Thailand and Singapore and also in other parts of the world as well. Which is the best one? You decide.

Keeping Up With The Jonesesreat music and a roadtrip make the perfect combo, as do this issue’s featured musicians, y tJones.
MALIBU ANDERSON PAAK As one of y tJones’ favourite albums of the moment, this is aak’s best work to date.
owever, it isn’t easy to categorise, with the former r. re prot g blending funk, soul and
B in amongst his breezy bass lines. ts range and depth ensured both critical and popular acclaim, as well as a rammy nomination.
RYÖTJONES IS LISTENING TO
LIVE AT THE APOLLO JAMES BROWN AND THE FAMOUS FLAMES
ecorded in 1962, which was paid for, incidentally, by Brown himself, the record company was initially unwilling to release this. owever, after being persuaded by Brown, the album became an enormous success, and is still cited in
olling Stone magazine as one of the best albums ever made (it was named at number 2 ). The recording might not be flawless, but this is James Brown at his irrepressible best.
5 MINUTES WITH RYÖTJONESeet y tJones, a big band with a big sound. t all started with amming sessions
initiated by ‘ eo (Karmawan, electric guitars) who met Kyren Thomas after a gig. our months after forming their eight-member band, they entered the ‘ ock the ouse’ talent competition only to steal the grand prize at the finale eight weeks later. To say 2 16 was the break-out year for
y tJones would be something of an understatement. So infectious was their blend of funk and soul that the band were soon lined up to play increasingly bigger gigs across the country, with record labels fighting for their signatures. Now, the funksters are set to release their debut single,
ancing Shoes. That said, we caught up with the group’s energetic frontman, Kyren Thomas.
ho or h t ins ires o ?When it comes to y tJones, all our inspirations vary. We try to put a new spin on genres you don’t see many young people in KL getting into. nternationally we look to the likes of James Brown, Earth Wind and ire, BB King, rince, Jamiroquai, Alabama Shakes, and Bruno ars. Locally we’re massively influenced by the likes of . amlee, Salammusik, Tilu, Sound and arren Ashley. reckon we’ve ust taken inspiration from people who’ve made music at its purest in terms of expression, people who have stayed true to what they do.
In what positive ways has the Malaysian music scene
h nge ?The local music scene’s biggest change came from it acting as a melting pot for all kinds of music. We see people from all genres and even di erent art forms coming
together and collaborating. Today, listening to local music has become cool again.
h t in en e o r sing e Dancing Shoes and what sort of i e oes it h e?ancing Shoes best describes
the band’s main goal of musical expression. We want people dancing at our shows, moving and singing along. t’s ust a darn good time accompanied by real danceable music that isn’t generated by clicking buttons on a computer screen. t’s one of our more pop-influenced songs, but still carries that big band heavy brass nature of y tJones. t’s an old school sound with a new school influence.
What excites you most about the si s ene right no ?The collaborations between artists from all genres of music. Even artists from di erent forms of
media are collaborating to make amazing works which enhance local productions, be it from video photographers to artists and writers. t’s become one massive collaboration within the art scene.
Who would be your dream o or tion?
As of now our wishlist of collaborations with musicians would definitely include Sound, Acap from Salammusik, arren Ashley, ira from Tilu, and Sonaone. We’re even looking at young hiphop acts like Kid Santhe and Airliftz.
