DEFINITION:
• Definition by NACE : Corrosion is the degradation of material (usuallymetal) caused by reaction with its environment
• Definition in ISO 8044: (Metallic) Corrosion is a physico-chemical interaction between a metal (or alloy) and its environment, leading to a degradation of the functional system represented by the metal (metal loss or crack) or the environment (contamination)
KOROSI TERJADI SECARA
SPONTAN / ALAMI
Corrosion : Any metal tends naturally to return to natural state which is almost always in an oxide form.
The 4 Elements of an Electrochemical Cell
Electrochemical corrosion requires reduction and oxidation reactions
Anodic and cathodic reactions take place simultaneously on the surface of the same the metal.
These are called "coupled electrochemical reactions".
Anodes and cathodes are distributed on the metal surface
Two different electrochemical reactions can occur in the surface of a metal due to its highly heterogeneous nature.
High energy sites tend to dissolve first, leading to a redistribution of active sites.
• High Energy = Edges, corners, stressed areas, and grain boundaries.
• Lower energy spots may become active upon dissolution of high energy sites
Electrochemistry reminder
• Corrosion involves Electrochemical reactions:
• Oxidation: → loss of electrons
reducing species have an oxidation reaction
• Reduction : → gain/ acquisition of electrons
an oxidative specie have reduction reaction
• Oxidizing agents oxidize and are reduced
• Reducing agents reduce and are oxidized
• Each metal in contact with an electrolyte will have its specificpotential.
This electrical (or electrochemical) potential is due to an equilibrium of ions (metallic and electrolytic) at the metalinterface – it is specific for each metal !
• Beda potensial logam
• Beda komposisi kimia
• Beda konsentrasi ion dalam elektrolit
• Beda konsentrasi oksigen
• Beda temperatur
• Beda kondisi tegangan• Beda metalurgis
Beda potensial logam menyebabkan terbentuk anodadan katoda
Beda komposisi kimia menyebabkan terbentuk anodadan katoda

Jenis korosi
Prodi Teknik Material, FTMD ITB
Dr. Eng Asep Ridwan Setiawan
There are two major types of corrosion:uniform and localized.
The 9 forms of corrosion
1. Uniform Corrosion.
2. Localized Corrosion.
3. Galvanic Corrosion.
4. Flow-Velocity Effects.
5. Intergranular
Corrosion.6. De-alloying.
7. Cracking.8. High
Temperature.9. Microbial Corrosion.
Uniform corrosion
Uniform corrosion
Mitigation uniform corrosionControl:
• Select proper metallurgy
• Corrosion allowance (function of Corrosion rate and required lifetime)
• Inhibitor
• Cathodic protection
• Monitoring
Some metal-environment combinations known to results in general corrosion:
• CS - dilute mineral acid
• CS - CO2 and/or H2S in aqueous phase
• CS - seawater
• Ti - concentrated sulfuric acid
Corrosion rate of various alloys in boiling mixtures of 50% acetic acid and varying proportions of formic acid. Test time 1+3+3 days.
Uniform corrosion
Pitting corrosion
Pitting mechanism• Anodic reactions inside the pit:
Fe = Fe2+ + 2e- (dissolution of iron)
• Cathodic reaction:
1/2O2 + H2O + 2e- = 2(OH-)
The electrolyte enclosed in the pit gains positive electrical charge in contrast to the electrolyte surrounding the pit, which becomes negatively charged. The positively charged pit attracts negative ions of chlorine Cl- increasing acidity of the electrolyte according to the reaction:
FeCl2 + 2H2O = Fe(OH)2 + 2HCl
• PH of the electrolyte inside the pit decreases (acidity increases) from 6 to 2-3, which causes further acceleration of corrosion process.
Pit initiation : scratch, inclusion, local stressPit growth : In presence of chloride ions pits are growing by autocatalytic mechanism
Pitting corrosion
Control:
• Avoid metal/environment combination susceptible to pitting
• Check environmental conditions:• [Cl-] ATAU [X-]• Temperature• O2
• Minimum fluid velocity
A parameter to evaluate pitting resistance of ss is pren (pitting resistance equivalents number):
• PREN = Cr + 3.3 Mo + 16N
Critical pitting temperatures (CPT) for SAF2205,AISI 304 and 316 at varying concentrations ofsodium chloride, pH»6.0.
Pitting corrosion
Contoh beberapa logam yg rentan thd pitting di lingkungan yg mengandung klorida:
• SS (ferritic, austenitic,
Duplex)
• Fe-ni-cr alloy (incoloy)
• Aluminum alloy
• Copper alloy
Crevice corrosion
• Tipe material: komposisi unsur, struktur mikro nya.
• Kondisi lingkungan seperti ph, konsentrasi oksigen, konsentrasi halida, temperatur.
• Geometri celah, kekasaran permukaan.
Crevice corrosion
Crevice corrosionKontrol:
• Use materials less sensitive to pitting (the corrosion mechanisms are similar therefore a material resistant to pitting corrosion is also resistant to crevice corrosion)
• Avoid stagnant zone
• Don’t use threaded connections
• Control o2 content
Beberapa logam yg rentan thd korosi celah : stainless steels, Ni alloy, Titanium
Lokasi yg mungkin preferable terserang korosi celah:
• Flanged connection
• Tube/tubesheet connection
• Threaded connections
• Plate heat exchangers
Galvanic corrosion
• tipe korosi yg terjadi pada satu logamakibat kontak (terhubung secaraelektrokimia) dengan logam lain (dissimilar metal).
• Diperlukan adanya lingkungan yg korosif, pada salah satu logam yg tersambung.
• Korosi yg terjadi disebabkan adanya bedapotensial (∆V) antar logam yg tersambungdi lingkungan (bisa dilihat pada galvanic series).
Galvanic series
Galvanic corrosion
a) Pelat tembaga (katoda berukuran besar) yang disambungdengan paku baja (anodaberukuran kecil) kemudian terekspose air laut.
b) Pelat baja (anoda berukuran besar) dihubungkan dengan paku dari tembaga (katodaberukuran kecil) kemudian terekspose air laut.
• Kasus a menunjukkan efek luas yg merugikan yg bisa mempercepat laju korosi dari paku baja.
• Kasus b menunjukkan efek luas yg menguntungkan.

Example 22.8 SOLUTION
1. For the small zinc anode area:
2. For the large zinc anode area:
The rate of corrosion of the zinc is reduced significantly when the zinc anode is much larger than the cathode.

1. Cek beda potensial (∆v) antar dua logam yg akan disambung
2. Kalau kecil (dua logam yg disambung posisinya berdekatan pada galvanic series, maka korosigalvanik bisa diabaikan.
3. Cek korosifitas dari lingkungan
4. Kalau lingkungan tidak agresif pada salah satu logam yg disambung, maka korosi galvanis bisadiabaikan.
5. Cek nilai konduktivitas dari lingkungan
6. Kalau nilainya kecil (misal demi water of hydrocarbons) maka korosi galvanis bisa di abaikan.
7. Cek luas area cathodic/anodic
45
Figure 22.14 (a) Intergranular corrosion takes place in austenitic stainless steel. (b) Slow cooling permits chromium carbides to precipitate at grain boundaries. (c) A quench anneal to dissolve the carbides may prevent intergranular corrosion.
Integranular corrosion
Mitigation intergranular
corrosion
Selective leaching
(dealloying)
Dealloying characteristics
• No net loss of section, but a dramatic loss of strength/hardness as spongy material is left behind• Uniform dealloying• Banded or layer type dealloying• Plug dealloying
• Susceptible Copper Alloys (“dezincification”):• Brasses (>15% zinc)• Bronzes (Al bronze/Ni Al bronze)• Copper-Nickels• Many of the Cu alloys are formulated to resist dealloying
• •Cast iron (“graphitization” or “graphitic corrosion”

Figure 22.2 Photomicrograph of a copper deposit in brass, showing the effect of dezincification (x50).
Environmental Conditions for Dealloying Corrosion
• Slow corrosion process
• High temperatures, stagnant-flow conditions and “corrosive” environment• Acidic solutions for brasses with high Zn and dissolved oxygen are conducive
to dealloying corrosion
• Monitoring of water chemistry to control pH and concentration of corrosive contaminants and treatment with hydrazine to minimize dissolved oxygen are effective in reducing dealloying corrosion
Corrosion-errosion
Corrosion-erosion
Erosion corrosion of Al Heat Sink
Corrosion errosion
Stress corrosion cracking

Figure 22.8 Examples of stress cells. (a) Cold work required to bend a steel bar introduces high residual stresses at the bend, which then is anodic and corrodes. (b) Because grain boundaries have a high energy, they are anodic and corrode.
Stress corrosion crack
3 jenis H2S cracking pada baja
Cara praktis menghindari HIC atau SSCC
1. Mengatur komposisi kimia baja
2. Mengatur proses steel making / casting
3. Mengatur proses rolling / heat treatment
Study cases : Stress corrosion cracking of a U-bend waste fuel heat exchanger tube.
Environment
• Shell side – hot waste fuel. Tube side – cooling water.
Material Type
• 316 stainless steel U-bend exchanger tube. Temperature of tube side. Service life is 5 years at 21◦C.
Cause of failure
• Failure analysis showed that 316 SS heat exchanger tubes suffered chloride stress corrosion cracking in straight sections as well as U-bend of heat exchanger tubes. The root cause was attributed to a blockage in cooling water which activated the hot oil at 21◦C to raise the temperature of the water containing about 800 ppm chloride. The problem was resolved by free circulation of the cooling water.
Study cases : Chloride stress corrosion cracking of a 304L SS
• 28” diam buried pipeline carrying CO2 feedstock, after seven years of service life.
Environment
• The pipeline ran parallel to a roadway which was frequently de-iced with salts during winter period. The adjacent soil of the pipe contained 150–260 ppm of chloride.
Cause
• Ametallurgical history of the pipe showed that it was exposed to tensile stresses, thermal stresses and residual stresses from weldment. The temperature reached about 45◦C. Surface topography suggested intergranular cracking.
Prevention
• SCC occurred because of the leaching of chlorides from the adjacent soil which was de-iced by salt in winters. The ingress of chloride may be stopped either by some insulation or by changing the location of the pipe well away from the roadway.
Microbiologically induced corrosion
• Serangan korosi bersifat lokal.
• Kondisi lingkungan : basah, ph 4-9, temperatur (10-50 c).
• Kecepatan aliran dalam pipa yg lambat rentan thd mic.
MIC
Microorganism involved in MIC
Control MIC
• Use biocide addition
• High thick coating (i.E. Coal tar)
• Cathodic protection (+950 mv)
• High quality hydrotest water
• Avoid wet dead legs
