Come and see the coolest volcano around

in Washington. Mt. Rainier is beautiful. About 2 million people come to see it a year. It covers 235,625 acres! Best of all, there are so many things to look at and do. You will love it!

Park History Mt. Rainier was

established in March 2, 1899. It is America’s fifth oldest park. Also, this volcano is 12 million years old itself! It has a history E- library and a museum too!

Special Geography This National Park has

forest, meadows, and even spawns six major rivers! It is a volcano of fire and ice. Freezing on the outside, burning on the inside. It is 14,410 feet above the sea! It is the highest peak in the Cascade Range.

Animals They have 56 species of

mammals,11 species amphibians,5 species of reptiles,229 species of birds, and 8 species of native fish.

The Bull Trout is very common in Mt. Rainier. It lives in creeks and migrates a lot from the ocean.

The Cascade Frog lives in ponds and wetlands. The female frog can get as big as 3 inches while the male frog only gets to 2.3 inches.

The Rubber Boa does not bite at all. It lives in near water usually and curls into a ball when it is scared.

Plants There are so many plants in Mt.

Rainier. Here is just a few of them. Alpine is a wildflower that likes

snow. It is usually mixed in with other wildflowers. This is a small plant that doesn’t grow tall.

Subulpine Meadows also likes the snow. This is a meadow of trees that bring a lot of attention. They are usually cloaked well in snow in June.

Huckleberry is a little shrub that is found in dense areas of the south and west of the park . It is in the same species as blueberries.

Fun Things to Do and See

There is SO much to do in Mt. Rainier. You can go hiking in the daytime and

over night! They provide lunch, so when you get hungry, you can stop for lunch! 12 people in groups at the most for hiking. Rock climbing is fun in the summer. Many people come to climb this 14,410 foot volcano. So, if you come make sure to wear your rock climbing outfit.

Bicycling is very fun during September and October. Also, every July 750 cyclists go on a 154 mile coarse to test themselves. You should try it!

This park is open 24/7. All day and night. Pets welcome!

FEES

$15 for private

$5 for anyone entering with motorcycle, bicycle, or horseback

$30 for annual park pass

Did You Know

Mt. Rainier gets about 54 feet of snow a year! This volcano that is surrounded by other little

volcanos has a sister! It is Mt. Fuji in Japan.

Flood

There was a flood on Mt. Rainier in 2006. It started raining on Sunday and never stopped raining until Tuesday. It was counted as 18 inches of rain through those 3 days.
