Priority Burn Sites 2010 Natural Resource Management Officer Report prepared by Melinda Lyons, 4th January 2010
R 15513 – (Pin 593366 Rec Centre and 593106, Crellin Street, 11.4 ha)
Natural Resource Values
Baudin’s Cockatoo nesting site (Pin 593106) – public information has noted that a set of Baudin’s Cockatoos have been disappearing into a tree hollow along the eastern boundary of the reserve in a tree closest to the river foreshore edge. These birds are protected under Western Australia’s Wildlife Conservation Act 1950. On inspection there appears to be a number of hollow tree stags within this reserve that provide important bird nesting habitat (see map).
There is a swamp paperbark woodland within Pin 593366 which is of important ecological value. The trees are an important nutrient sink prior to stormwater reaching the Denmark River. They are of historical value due to their age. Any fire in this zone has the potential to open up the forest canopy and increases fire hazard. A fire in a dried out peat swamp is difficult to control as flames often continue to smoulder underground, fed by the dried peat (see map).
The northern boundary of Pin 593106 is currently a relatively weed free section of the reserve. Fire in this zone has the potential to introduce weeds into exposed soils (see map)
There has been extensive revegetation works within the cleared gravel pit section of Pin 593106 (see map).
There are no known landscape protection sites within or surrounding this reserve.
There are no known priority flora species listed within the reserves. Heritage Site
The old post office building while not within in the reserve is situated in close proximity to the southern boundary of Pin 593106. It is a registered Heritage Site on the Shire Municipal Heritage Register.
Both Pin 593366 and Pin 593106 reserves border the Denmark River which is an aboriginal heritage site (Site ID 22081). A Section 18 is currently being sort for proposed trail upgrade works along the foreshore.
Social and Community Values
Upgrade to the Karri Walk Trail. This is part of a grant funded by the Department Sport and Recreation and Lotterywest. Works include grading path and timber signage and bollarding to increase delineation of walk trail in open clearings and road crossings. The upgrade covers both Pin 593366 and Pin 593106.
The Bibbulmun Track and the Denmark Nornalup Heritage Rail Trail traverses close to the southernmost end of the reserve.
A request has been received on behalf of Denmark Arts to request permission to use the large clearing off the Karri Walk (between Crellin St and Brazier St) for two performances of ‘Our Secret River’ as part of Brave New Works #17, 2nd and 3rd April 2010 (see attached email).
There are no known strategic tourism sites within or surrounding this reserve.
Recommendations
1. Preparation involving grading or creation of firebreaks prior to burns be in consultation with NRM Officers and Nursery Manager to ensure protection of any significant ecological values or seed stock.
2. Budget preparation for the site includes follow up weed control to ensure exposed soils do not create a weed problem (further fire hazard).
3. Pin 593366 not be included in planned controlled burns
southern section of reserve is already of low fire risk with low open canopy
swamp paperbark canopy be retained as is to prevent peat drying out 4. Significant tree stags within the reserve be retained for wildlife habitat (to be tagged
prior to burn). 5. Burn to avoid revegetation in open gravel pit. 6. The Department of Environment and Conservation to be informed of an imminent burn
to warn Bibbulmun Track walkers. 7. Consultation with Noongar elders prior to any burning as Pin 593106 overlaps an
Aboriginal Heritage site. The burn should be included in the Section 18 application for trail upgrade permissions to the DIA.
8. Signage warning of imminent burn be put in place on trails for Bibbulmun and Rail Trail users.
9. A controlled burn is planned for the southern reserve Pin 593106 after the Easter long weekend 2010.
FUEL ASSESSMENT SHEET FOR FOREST FUELSAll Tables referred to are in Forest Fire Behaviour Tables for Western Australia, commonly called the ‘Red Book’, (3rd Edition, 1998) by R.J. Sneeuwjagt and G.B. Peet.
