FOREWORD

Some of the glory of the Philippines lies in the beautiful variety of people and languages within .its coasts. It is to the great credit of the national leadership over the years that no attempt has been made to destroy this national heritage. The goal has been instead to preserve its integrity and dignity while building on this strong foundation a lasting super-structure of national language and culture.

The present book is one of many designed for this purpose. It recognizes the pedagogical importance of dividing literacy and second-language learning into two steps -- literacy being the first. When a student has learned to read the language he understands best, the resulting satisfaction in his accomplishment gives the drive and confidence he needs to learn the national language. His ability to read, furthermore, is the indispensable tool for the study this program will require.

The Department of Education and Culture of the Philippines is proud to present this latest volume in a nationwide series designed to teach the national language through literacy in the vernaculars. It will strengthen both the parts of the nation and the whole.

JUAN L. MANUEL Secretary

P R E F A C E

This primer, the first in a series of two, has been prepared to teach the skill of reading to the Cotabato Manobo people. This first primer introduces the five most common vowels, glottal stop and seven consonants from a total of twenty-one letters of the Manobo alphabet. Each letter is introduced using phonics and practised in controlled syllable, word, and story drills.

The symbolization of the alphubet is as follows: a, b, k, d, e, ~' 9:,1 !:!_, i, _!_, !!!1 !!_, !!!l1 £1 £1 ~' ~, -£,-~,-~.- Glottal stop is symbolized as ~ in syllable final position. It is symbolized as ~ in syllable initial position when the preceding syllable ends with a consonant. Glottal stop is not symbolized but occurs between any two adjacent vowels. The letter e symbolizes the mid central vowel and is pronounced similar to the vowel in the English word 11 but". The letter ~ symbolizes the mid front vowel and is pronounced similar to the vowel sound of the English word, "let". The letter E. symbolizes the bilabial fricative, and is pronounced similar to the English "f". All the other letters are pronounced ~s the National Language equivalents.

These materials were prepared by Mr. and Mrs. Ross Errington and Mr. and Mrs. E. Clay Johnston, members of the Swarner Institute of Linguistics.
