ii. M.Tech. in Biotechnology:
The Heritage Institute of Technology is perhaps the rst self-nanced engineering college
in the Eastern Region that has been entrusted to be involved in the postgraduate educationand R&D activities in Biotechnology. The Department of Biotechnology which started B.Tech.
course in 2002 has well equipped laboratories suited to the needs of the curriculum and for
basic research work. Members of the faculty are highly qualied with R&D experiences in
India and abroad and have numerous National and International publications and patents
to their credit. The department houses several extra-mural research projects including UGCfunded one, conducted by the members of faculty.
The department is proud of its B.Tech. passouts, most of whom are now engaged in
postgraduate education and research in reputed institutes all over India as well as in
foreign countries. Students of the department are encouraged to think independently, read
non-text reference books and try hands-on experiments. They regularly attend seminarsand present papers in Annual Sessions, Seminars and Symposia organized by the Indian
Science Congress, in CHEMCON by the IIChE, West Bengal State Science Congress and
the like. They take part in debates, quiz competitions and tech-fairs, both within and outsidethe college. Apart from securing some top positions in the university examinations, they
have bagged several prizes in seminars, technology/ engineering fairs and other
events.
The department endeavours to bring students closer to science through cultural
and extra-curricular activities. The department motivates its students to be aware
of the social needs and serve the nation and mankind with knowledge and its
application.
Rationale:
Biotechnology is an umbrella term that covers various techniques for using the
properties of living things to make products or provide services. Presently around
200,000 people are involved in biotech industries worldwide. India is currently ranked
third in the Asia-Pacic region, based on the number of the biotech companies, trailinig
behind Australia and China. In India, there are more than 800 companies, in all sectors
of biotechnology, of which 20 are working in the modern biotechnology sectors. The new
economic policy has exposed indigenous technology and Indian industries to the rigours
of global competition. Development of indigenous processes and technology become a
must for thriving in the competitive market. The nation needs a good number of dedicated
and skilled professionals to meet the demand.
Being a fast-growing subject, biotechnology is highly dependent on R&D for new
products and concepts. The Government of India has set up the Department of
Biotechnology which invested over Rs 1,000 crores for developing skilled manpower,
creating R&D infrastructure and providing support to the public funded institutions.
The Government of West Bengal also plans to set up a Biotech Incubation Centre
on 1,50,000 sq. ft. of space at Sector-V in Salt Lake, for which orders worth Rs. 2crore have already been placed to buy machines. Over 50 R&D labs in public sectors
are active and over 20 are conducting research in frontiers of biotechnology. Export
of Indian Biopharmaceutical products has grown 47 per cent annually. The M.Tech
course in Biotechnology will help students take a leadership in the R&D sector in both
industry and academia. Students can have challenging jobs in areas of healthcare,
renewable energy, food and agriculture, pollution control and other relevant industries
and tracing out alternative processes for industrial chemicals.

iii. M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering :The Chemical Engineering Department was established in the Heritage Institute of
Technology in July 2002. Since the inception, the department has a long standing record
of producing top and toppers-of-the-top undergraduate students in B.Tech. Examinations
conducted by WBUT (consecutive four years starting from 2006) and bagged nineuniversity medals out of a total of twelve. The outgoing students have also established
a creditable record through their performance in GATE/ CAT and GRE. About 15% of
the total passed out students are studying/ have studied in USA, UK, IISc and IITs. The
department is manned by highly motivated and enthusiastic members of faculty, quite a
few of whom are having a long teaching experience in India and abroad. Most of themembers of faculty in the department are engaged in active research and they regularly
publish papers in International and National scientic journals. The department has an
active Students Chapter of IIChE and a Renewable Energy Club supported by WBREDA,

Rationale :The recession in the US market and global meltdown termed globalrecession, which has been described by the IMF as the .most dangerous
shock to rich-country nancial markets since 1930s engulfed the complete
world economy during 2008-2009. However, because of the volatile job
market, brighter students are now likely to go in for higher studies forenhancing employability, thus posing greater demand for PG programmes.
Furthermore, since the global economic crisis has hit IT spending in US andFrance, many Indian software companies are now focusing on the domestic
front. In fact, Indias top three IT rms TCS, Infosys and WIPRO have
decided to take on global giant IBM for a bigger share in software development
for the domestic market, which would require qualied professionals.
The Department of CSE has felt these needs for developing specialized
manpower and decided to offer an M.Tech. degree in CSE where state-of-the-art topics will be covered in depth to satisfy the present and the future
needs of the markets. Degree holders from this programme will also be
considered as the next generation faculty, instrumental in the formation
of a knowledge society and essential in playing a role in the expansion of
technical education launched by the MHRD, Govt. of India.
At Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata, we use the state-of-the-arthardware and the latest software from Microsoft, IBM, CISCO, Macromedia
etc., for our various laboratories like Multimedia lab, Network lab, Basic
