Laces tight, jacket zipped, gloves on. Early morning over the river trail. The cool air and warm sunrise compete for your imagination. The rhythm of shoes bouncing off the asphalt, deep breaths and nature’s hum somehow create a symphony than allows the mind to drift. Struggle, frustration, discontent, anger, sadness, longing, desire, joy, anticipation, freedom, HOPE! When we run, we dream.
Limits, judgements, restrictions, structure, classifications, policies, procedures, rules...gone. Blocks turn to goals, miles to new beginnings. When we run, we dream.
Destination reached! Hi fives, “Way to go!”, hugs, clips snap, velcro crackles, gait belt tightened, transfer, “See you next week!”, hugs, “Thank You, friend!”, up the ramp of transport van, ride home, back to life. Liberated. When we run, we dream.
Our greatest gift is the ability to dream. Dreams connect our spirit to our world and give it an opportunity to grow, evolve and become reality. Dreams are fueled by a unique balance of struggle, opportunity, faith and people. For individuals with disabilities, the ability to dream is restricted by policies, physical limitations, and lack of someone to dream with. When we run, we dream.
For many of these individuals, the words “I believe in you” are a foreign language. Many have never been encouraged on a companion level. Instead, they are usually reminded of what is not possible, what they’ve lost and how much of a burden they are. What individuals with disabilities need is someone to cheer for them, to tell them they are worthy, that their spirit is free to dream, and together, we can live a life of great possibility! When we run, we dream.

“ As the parents of a captain, we both left the Packer 5k with a renewed outlook
on the kindness and generosity of people. Three complete strangers gave of their time so they could run with our son so he could experience the thrill of running through the crowds of people, hear his name called out in support and travel through Lambeau for the first time. These angels showed up at practice runs and gave of their time and energy to give someone else and their family hope and happiness. It warms the heart and lasts much longer than the day of the race. Our angels stepped to the side of the course and unbuckled Brysson so they could escort him on foot across the finish line. Here was our boy who just two years before was in danger of losing the ability to walk in his future, walking across the finish line in a 5k race.
It meant the world to our family. ”- Parents of Captain Brysson
