Learning the basics oftennis can be great fun

Where do I stand? Two players stand on diagonallyopposite sides of the net. One isthe server; the other the receiver.

Who starts the game? One player starts the game byserving from behind the baseline(see Page 12 for tips on serving).

Where do I aim for?Aim for the service box diagonallyopposite (see picture). You havetwo chances to get your serve in.

What if I miss?If you fail both times, it is adouble fault and you lose thepoint. If the rst serve hits thenet but lands in the correct box,you still have two more chances.

Can it bounce? The ball must not bounce morethan once after each shot, butyou can hit it before it bounces which is known as a volley.

How do I win a point? You win the point if the otherplayer hits the ball out, intothe net or cannot return a shot.

What happens next?At the next point, the servermoves to the other side. Theykeep changing left to rightafter each point.
