Keep your routines fresh and your motivation high as you maintain your all-important balance, core strength, heart health and flexibility. Don’t forget to

exercise your brain!

Wednesday, August 2nd, 10:15 (SR) The book for August is Euphoria by Lily King. “English anthropologist, Andrew Bankson, has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the Territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Nell and Fen have just fled the bloodthirsty Mumbanyo and, in spite of Nell's poor health, are hungry for a new discovery. When Bankson finds them a new tribe nearby, the artistic, female-dominated Tam, he ignites an intellectual and romantic firestorm between the three of them that burns out of anyone's control.” All book club selections are made by members of the group. New members are always welcome. The book for September is TBD.

Saturday, August 19th, 2:00 (Li) The Library Committee, led by Mary Lee Helm, meets to organize books and share outreach ideas. As many books get donated, the Library Committee sorts them and checks for duplicates, ensuring that our bookshelves hold only books of interest. If you are a reading enthusiast, you are welcome to join the committee.

Wednesday, August 9th, 1:15 (TRIP) Grab you library card and head to the Eugene Public Library. Peruse books, DVDs, CDs, books on tape and much more. New to our community and need a library card? This can be helpful for those who go to the library primarily on our monthly bus trip.

Thursday, August 17th, 7:00 (WH) Join us in our new, monthly Improv session. Improv not only helps build neurons in your brain, but it lets you explore a more outgoing side of yourself that you may have never known was there. Facilitator, Jeff Crews, would like to invite anyone and everyone who would like to be a part of this new monthly group to join. It’s not about acting; it’s about acceptance, presence, humor, dialogue, story telling, imagination and living engaged! Everyone is welcome and everyone is encouraged to just be yourself!

Drop In Exercise: Tuesdays in August, 2:00-2:30 (F) Monthly Meeting: Tuesday, August 8th, 10:30 (F) Fitness Assessment or Personalization: Available by Appointment In the fitness room we have hung instructions for 6 simple exercises which can be done alone or with a buddy. In August we will add a 7th station for stepping exercise. If you’d prefer a little extra coaching or instruction to get started in these independent exercises, consider dropping in to the Fitness Room any Tuesday between 2:00-2:30. All exercises are aimed at preparing you for a fitness assessment. But don’t wait! Make an appointment now so we have record of where you currently stand. This will help track your progress and build your motivation. In addition, a monthly meeting will offer opportunities for support, meet-up buddies, and questions about proper form or other concerns. This once-a-month meeting can be your ticket to creating and staying on track with your plan. Track your progress in your own fitness folder (now kept in the fitness room).

Wednesdays, 7:30 (DR); Fridays, 1:30 (DR Get your body moving and build muscle in a fun, enthusiastic way. What is Nia? Non-Impact Aerobics provides cardio exercise that is easy on your joints but builds bone and muscle while using upbeat music. Instructor Janet Hollander has studied Nia Technique for over 20 years and says, "I've found a fitness and lifestyle practice that I can do for the rest of my life." All levels welcome.

Keep your routines fresh and your motivation high as you maintain your all-important balance, core strength, heart health and flexibility. Don’t forget to

It’s summer vacation for the Better Bones class, but YOU still want to stay strong. Meet with Janet or Chandra to review your current number of stair steps, lunges and squats and take home a plan for steady improvement. Meet with buddies during My Motion sessions or whenever you wish. Watch for the class resuming in the fall and meanwhile, there will be a step ready and waiting for you in the fitness room.

Gwen is knowledgeable about the trees, birds and ponds and may provide added discussion among the group while walking.

Fridays, 2:00 (F) Guys exercise with guys to encourage and inspire each other. Enjoy new challenges and solutions to improve balance and flexibility, including a variety of circuits to match different fitness levels and goals. Join the group. Instructor: Frank Beber.

Mondays & Wednesdays 9:00-9:50 (F) Challenge and novelty (doing unfamiliar things) are important to assure continued improvement. Make sure your exercise program keeps you going “uphill” (not downhill). Find out how you’re doing with a personal fitness assessment. Start the day with a boost to your strength, agility, flexibility, and balance. *This month, stick around after class on Mondays for relaxation techniques guided by Ethel Parker. Instructors: Janet Hollander and Chandra Bigelow.

Wednesdays, 11:30-12:00 and Fridays, 3:15-3:45 (F) Since it is time to re-do our fitness assessments, we will focus this month on practicing the activities that show off our improvement since our last assessment. This half-hour class, in chairs, focuses on improving the basic moves of everyday life and “oiling our joints.” We have added an optional 5 minutes with hand-held weights at the end of class to ensure improvement. Instructors: Janet Hollander and Emily Woody.

The distillery sits on the corner of 1st and Madison in a building that was occupied by a machine shop for many years. Give yourself the gift of self-care as we delve into a morning of rejuvenating activity. We will begin the day with gentle stretching and hand “yoga” (known as mudras). Then follow Janet’s lead and allow music to guide your creative expression and movement. Bring a jacket and walking shoes because if the weather allows, we will venture outside for a short walk by the river. Next, Melissa treats us to a healthy lunch of cherry tomatoes with broccoli filling, and a caprese wrap or chicken wrap with mango chutney. For dessert, try her lemon tiramisu and to drink we will have raspberry and lime infused water. Our onsite “retreat” will close with a short guided meditation. Reiki appointments will be available in the spa following our morning together. Make your appointment at the Front Desk. Consider inviting a friend or family member to join. There is a fee of $2 and lunch will count as one of your regular Willamette Oaks meals (lunch charge for outside guests is $7.00).
