Trainer Tony Dutrow, about I Spent It drawing the inside post in The Saratoga Special

“He reminds me of the good horses I’ve ridden in my career. I don’t want to jinx him, I’m not a superstitious guy, but he’s a good horse, if he stays sound…I won the Saratoga Special on Union Rags, I told Michael Matz, ‘This is a big big-time horse.’ I would take a shot and say this horse could be as good. It’s early but he’s one of the best horses on the grounds.”

ROCCO ROCKSJockey Joe Rocco Jr. rewrote the lyrics to “Rude” (with a racing theme)

for jockey karaoke Monday night:

Saturday morning jumped outta bed, put on my morning boots. Got in my truck and raced like a jet, Straight to your tack room.

Knocked on your door with helmet in hand, to ask you a question, ’Cause I know that you’re an old-fashioned man.

Can I ride your filly in the stake on a Friday night?Say yes, say yes, cause I need the dough.

You say I’ll never get the call until the day I die.Tough luck my friend, but the answer is no.

Why you gotta be so rude? Don’t you know I can ride too?Why you gotta be so rude? I’m gonna win the race anyway.

Find a better horse. Win the race anyway. Find another horse. No matter what you say. Find a better horse.

Yeah, and we’ll get our picture take. Why you gotta be so . . . RUDE? I hate to do this, you leave me no choice. I need that money real bad sir.

Love me or hate me I will rejoice. First under that wire, and I’ll go through on the fence. For the entire race you know, you can call

an inquiry, beat you fair a half-a-length I know.

“There was a trainer named E.W. King, a long time ago, he says, ‘You ought to come out and play polo with us.’ I said, ‘Oh yeah, what am I going to ride?’ He said, ‘Bring your pony.’ So, I brought my pony, and lo and behold he knew how to play polo, only thing was he didn’t have much whoa, you might as well pull on this post, but he knew how to play polo. They told me what to do, ‘you turn your man, you bump your man…’ Whenever you have a green player, they go with the number one, and they say turn your player to the left and wait for somebody to get you the ball, so I did that for a while. Before I knew it, I was hooked. That old pony, he was an old chestnut, when I started playing out in the field, he was too much, he would just run off.”

Before he opened the meeting with a 2-for-2 record, trainer Jeremiah En-glehart bore the ignominy of a per-fect goose egg here at Saratoga Race Course, 0 wins in 59 starts. It was a blotch on Englehart’s otherwise suc-cessful resume that includes a victory in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and graded stakes victories with King Kreesa and Tamarind Hall.

Englehart, who starts favored Tahoe Tigress in today’s $100,000 Saratoga Dew Stakes, says he main-tained perspective even as the losses mounted.

“It never bothered me that we had never won here,” the affable trainer said earlier in the meet. “It was kind of like the Red Sox before they won the World Series, or the Cubs now.”

Talk with Englehart for a while and it won’t take long to notice that he likes using sports analogies. You also see he is competitive enough that the losses here surely rankled him, and two wins early in the meet came as a tremendous relief.

“I was more happy for the barn than anything because it’s a big load off their shoulders, getting that first win out of the way,” Englehart says about the triumph of Winter Games in the first race of Opening Day. Shan-kopotamus followed with a victory July 23, allowing for another analogy.

“It’s like hitting home runs in Lit-tle League baseball, hitting that first one,” he says. “I went my whole ca-reer in Little League never hitting a home run. Then I hit one, and I was like Mark McGwire after that.”

Perhaps Englehart never hit rac-ing’s version of a home run at Sara-toga, but he wasn’t without big hits elsewhere. One in particular stands out, but for a man practically raised in a barn, the journey runs much deeper than wins and losses.

Englehart was born in 1976 to a ready-made racing mentor, his father and longtime trainer Chris Englehart,

the man who instilled an affinity for the game in each of his six children. They have all gone on to work in the racing industry as owners, trainers, bookkeepers, even an aspiring equine dentist. It all started at Finger Lakes, the hub of the Englehart family where Jeremiah and his father are still based.

“My parents actually had six kids for labor, be-cause we did a lot of work,” Englehart joked. “I was probably about 6 or 7 years old, putting feed in for my parents when the buckets were done. I remember walking horses then.”

Englehart never truly intended to work as any-thing other than a horseman, but he tried differ-ent things. He went to SUNY-Cortland in 1994 to play football as a freshman. A broken leg sidelined him before he played a game and he left the school shortly thereafter. He eventually obtained an asso-ciate’s degree in business marketing from Alfred State in 2000, but in his own words “wasn’t any good at it.” He continued on to study at Rochester Institute of Technology but left in 2001 to return to work for his father at Finger Lakes.

July 24, 2001 is etched in Englehart’s brain as the day his first winner ran, though technically Chris Englehart was the trainer of Good Man Sam, a gelding Jeremiah and his brother Jessie pushed their father to claim. Jeremiah had been work-ing with the horse, and he convinced his father to scratch another one of his entrants in the same race.

The move paid off, and Jeremiah would go on to eventually become Good Man Sam’s official trainer.

“I still have him,” Englehart says. “He’s like 18 now, on a farm in Avon, New York.”

Englehart put in the necessary hours before be-coming a trainer. He continued to work on and off with his father, and also did stints under veteran conditioners Mike Hushion and Ken McPeek at Belmont Park. Englehart spent the summer of 2002 working on the gate crew at Saratoga. By the next summer he was training on his own and notched

his first win in July 2003 with Longingtobeme, a mare he claimed from Rick Schosberg. Coincidentally, Schosberg im-parted some career advice to the fledgling trainer that same day.

“Rick had another horse in that race,” Englehart said. “He congratulated me on the job I did, then he said ‘Remem-ber, sometimes you’re the pi-geon and sometimes you’re the statue. Today I’m the statue.’ That’s one thing that always stuck with me, that phrase, be-cause I’ve been the statue plenty of times since.”

That’s not to say Engle-hart hasn’t taken his turns as the pigeon in the decade since his first official winner. He re-turned to Finger Lakes in 2005 after a few years splitting time

between Belmont and Aqueduct. Three years lat-er he had the maximum allotment of 30 stalls at his home track. By 2011 Englehart was emulating his father in leaving some of his horses at Belmont full-time and in the care of assistant trainer Eliz-abeth Dobles, an indispensable part of the Engle-hart team. Tamarind Hall became his first graded stakes winner that July in the Grade 3 Bed O’ Roses

Handicap at Belmont. She later finished third in the Grade 1 Ballerina and third in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom to earn a trip to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs.

“We didn’t run any good, but I always wanted to get back,” Englehart said of the Breeders’ Cup. “I was always searching for those types of horses.”

He found one in filly Ria Antonia. The 2013 Breeders’ Cup provided the platform for the high-light to Englehart’s career. She was second under the wire at 27-1 behind She’s a Tiger, but was put up when that rival was disqualified for bumping in the stretch.

“I don’t usually root for my horses, but I remem-ber jumping up and down rooting for her,” he said. “It just seemed like it took forever from when she hit the three-eighths pole to the wire. I’m jump-ing up and down screaming, then I saw Mr. and Mrs. (Chester) Broman right in front of me and I thought, ‘Be respectful. Don’t be a jerk.’

“Then I thought something completely off the wall, like ‘Just leave your clothes on. Don’t run out there and take your shirt off, pull a Brandi Chastain.’ ”

Englehart stayed clothed, did not offend the own-

ers of Artemis Agrotera and waited for the win to be-come official. Then he dashed to find his wife Robin.

“I wanted to make sure I went to her first,” he says. “I had her waiting along the rail. I knew my number was going up, and I half-celebrated a bit myself. Then I said ‘I want to find Robin.’ I want to say I looked like Barry Sanders getting to the rail, but it wasn’t Barry Sanders. It was more like Jerome Bettis. I found her, and we hugged. It was very special to me to have that moment with her.”

Another special moment was waiting on his cell phone. A text message from his father pinged, star-tling because the elder trainer isn’t much of a texter, though he is apparently a joker.

“Haha,” it read, “I beat you in the sixth race at Finger Lakes.”

Father then turned serious when his son asked how it felt to be the sire of a Breeders’ Cup-winning trainer.

“Miah,” he answered, “I knew that a long time ago.”

In the movies Jeremiah might wipe away tears then walk off under a setting sun with his wife as the credits roll.

In real life they celebrated and returned to nor-mal life.

“No one is as important as my wife,” Englehart said. “She’s the one that juggles everything. I say ‘Listen, I’ve got to run back to the track.’ I have three screaming kids at the dinner table that just

threw three pounds of macaroni and cheese all over the house. I might have some grooms quit if I ever had one of my kids live in these stalls. She’s getting ready to do baths, and she doesn’t even say ‘Well, can you give me a hand first?’ I’m very, very lucky.

“There’s not one day I feel like, ‘Ah, I’ve got to go to the barn.’ Never. Getting to see the horses train is something I look forward to every day. It’s enjoy-able to work with the horses, and the people. And I want to win. Success is important to me, mainly because of the people I’ve got at home. I want them to have goals and aspirations and for them to be able to look up to somebody. We’re headed in the right direction.”

Thursday’s FeatureTahoe Tigress returns to the Saratoga Dew after

finishing fifth in the race last year when trained by Manuel Gomez. She returned to Englehart – who trained the 5-year-old Stephen Got Even mare in the spring and summer of 2013 – in the fall. She’s won twice, finished second in the Judy Soda Stakes and fourth in two other state-bred stakes, in her five starts since with Englehart.

“She’s pretty straightforward,” he said. “You just need to kind of let her get into the race when she wants to and she puts herself into a decent posi-tion. She’s a closer so it’s beneficial for her to have a

little pace in front of her. We’re ex-cited coming into this one but it’s a tough race. Any of these horses that are in there can win it. We’ll need a little bit of a trip.”

Jose Ortiz gets the mount on Tahoe Tigress, the 2-1 favorite in the field of seven entered for the 1 1/8-mile Saratoga Dew (the fourth of 10 races on the card).

Get Gorgeous makes her belated stakes debut in the Saratoga Dew for trainer David Donk and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. Donk took over the training of the 8-year-old Freud

mare this spring for Charles and Lois Hallas and she’s 2-for-2 since the change. The first win came in a claiming race for a $16,000 tag and the second an allowance/op-tional, both at Belmont.

“I’ve run her a couple of times and she’s run quite well,” Donk said. “It’s a bit of a test to see where we’re at with her. I’m not sure what the ceiling is on her but she deserves to be in here. She’ll appreciate the run of ground and try to give a good effort. Irad is up on her, he’s ridden her both times for me and he knows her very well. She likes to be in a stalking position and she’s got a good post on the outside. We’ll let him handle it.”

Second choice at 3-1 is the Mitch Friedman-trained entry of Dream-ing of Cara and Carameaway de-spite a combined 0-for-14 record on the season. Third choice at 7/2 is Easy Living, winner of an allow-ance race last time out for Christo-phe Clement.

Royal Suspicion, second in three straight starts against open com-pany at Monmouth Park for Jim Ryerson, and Finger Lakes shipper and stakes winner Little Rocket complete the field.

WININ WESTVIRGINIA

Nothing was going to keep Antho-ny McCarthy from getting his dress shoes dirty Wednesday afternoon.

Not intermittent rain through-out the morning and afternoon that moved the $100,000 Troy Stakes off the turf.

Not a sloppy track for the 5 ½-fur-long race.

Not a short argument with a se-curity guard as a female member of his party tried to, aghast, walk with him to the paddock wearing what the guard thought looked like shorts.

And not the four opponents Spring to the Sky would need to beat so his owner could get ankle deep in the Saratoga mud

Well, almost nothing was going to stop him.

The stewards weren’t sure about what they saw in the stretch as Spring to the Sky held off Dads Caps to win the Troy. Rudy Rodriguez, trainer of the runner-up wasn’t so sure either, and he claimed foul against the win-ner.

McCarthy got his shoes caked in mud either way, since he was a couple yards off the outside rail and standing on the track when the inquiry lights went up on the board. Fortunate-ly for him dousing his shoes wasn’t for naught as the matter was quick-ly resolved and the Saratoga Springs native grabbed the shank to lead his 5-year-old son of Langfuhr to the Tod Marks

Tired but victorious, Spring to the Sky awaits the result of a brief inquirty.

winner’s circle.Spring to the Sky added the Troy

to his win in the Lucky Coin going 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass earlier in the meet and capped a memorable day for McCarthy and trainer Bruce Brown, who teamed to win the second race with Broadway Bay.

“I’d never been in the winner’s cir-cle with my silks and we won two to-day and the one a couple weeks ago,” said McCarthy, who grew up on Wright Street not far from the track and is a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School. “It’s been a great meet so far and all credit to Bruce, who gets them all set and running and Javier (Castellano), who’s ridden all three of them for us. Those guys do all the hard work, I get to sit here and get my picture taken.”

McCarthy watched the race from the ground floor of the clubhouse with his group – after they were all able to finally get into the paddock to see Spring to the Sky saddled. Brown was with the group briefly, until a fan ranged up, lingered and proclaimed “this doesn’t look right … 3-5 is no good … the 6, he’s a lock,” looking in Brown’s direction.

“Oooh, I don’t like to hear that,” Brown said. “That guy probably hasn’t picked a winner in two years.”

Brown slipped away just as the field of five left the gate and splashed its way toward the far turn. Spring to the Sky broke sharply and Cas-tellano kept him a few paths off the inside and ripped a quarter-mile in 21.68 seconds over the off going. Dads Caps, winner of the Grade 1 Carter and even shorter odds than proclaimed by the fan, and Irad Or-tiz Jr. chased in second. Sandy’z Slew, Choctaw Chuck and Unseen made a line behind the top two.

The field stayed that way the whole way around the turn, into the stretch and past the half in 45 seconds. Cas-tellano kept Spring to the Sky four or five paths off the rail turning for home, forcing Dads Caps even wider.

McCarthy tapped his umbrella against the concrete floor, encour-aging his rider from afar. “Come on Javier, come on Javier, come on Javi-er,” McCarthy said, inching closer to

the monitor with each bellow. Spring to the Sky drifted farther in

the stretch as Castellano cracked him right handed, but he never made con-tact with the runner-up and held him clear by three-quarters of a length.

A little more than 30 yards to the wire and the race won in 1:04.01, McCarthy pumped a fist in the air and dashed to get his feet dirty.

Then came the inquiry.“I saw the race live on the TV and I

knew he was coming out a little, but it didn’t look like anything, then when we saw the head on…” McCarthy said.

The head-on camera showed a de-termined Spring to the Sky winning for the third time in nine tries this year and the sixth time from 23 ca-reer starts. The $60,000 check for the Troy pushed him over $400,000 in earnings.

Bred in Kentucky by Phillips Rac-ing Partnership, Spring to the Sky didn’t get there overnight and he’s been a bit of a project for Brown and his team. Brown bought Spring to the Sky for McCarthy on a bid of

$55,000 at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of selected yearlings.

Spring to the Sky didn’t make it to the races until the fall of his 2-year-old year, but he won his debut by 9 3/4 lengths sprinting on the dirt. He eventually found a home sprinting on the turf, winning the 6-furlong Groovy Stakes in the fall of his 3-year-old year. Brown had an up and down and up again campaign with Spring to the Sky last year, as the horse ran well in his first two starts, was vanned off in a small stakes at Saratoga and then earned his way to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint where he finished 11th be-hind Mizdirection and company.

Brown hopes to get back to the Breeders’ Cup this year. He’s now won three in a row after six losses to start the season, some defeats are bet-ter than they look on paper.

“This was great and now we’ll get him a little break,” Brown said. “He’s run a bunch of races in a row so we’ll probably shoot for something at Keeneland. We’ll see how he does there. If he runs big there we’ll start thinking Breeders’ Cup.

“This horse, it’s been a long road. We bought him up here as a yearling and it’s good to win up here. It’s a long process, but it’s worth it.”

RACE 1: As of deadline, it’s still up in the air as to whether or not the turf course will be a bog, as there’s a good deal of rain purported to be coming our way. Per our norm, we’re full bore into today’s jump-ing event. Always important to read the conditions of a race and see who “fits” nicely. This heat says “Non-winners of a race since March 1, 2013...” The horse that best fits this condition would be the #2B BLUE-GRASS SUMMER who broke his maiden on April 6, 2013. Gelding has won two more since then (all in game efforts), and Sheppard nearly doubles his rate with these 2nd off the L/O types. #3 EASY REACH is the clear speed, and may be kicking back clods at his competitors. #4 SCHOODIC gets 8-12 pounds from the rest.

Alex Solis, inducted into the Hall of Fame last week yet still seeking his first win of the meet as its fifth week opened, arrived at the eighth pole during Wednesday’s seventh race and wondered when the competition would arrive.

“It never did,” said Solis, who picked up that first win as he rode Is-abelle to a front-running score in the slop at Saratoga Race Course. The 3-year-old New York-bred daughter of Successful Appeal won by 4 1/2 lengths as Solis got his first win in his 16th mount of the meet.

Solis rode Isabelle in her five pre-vious starts, including wins in a state-bred maiden and the Bouwerie Stakes in May at Belmont Park. He was grateful for a sixth chance on William Schettine’s filly.

“Thank God we got that out of the way!” Solis laughed as he got out of the rain.

Solis kept an eye on the day’s other races and kept Isabelle off the inside while she raced on the lead, clicking off splits of :22.37 and :46.02 as six others gave chase.

“All of the water was running down towards the fence,” Solis said. “I just tried to get to the place where it would be easier for her.”

Trainer Lisa Lewis kept close tabs on the weather heading into the Isa-belle’s race. She knew her filly liked it wet – she broke her maiden by 12 1/2 lengths in the mud May 9 at Belmont

– but was still concerned.“She likes the off track, but walk-

ing over and looking at that track you can’t ever be sure,” Lewis said. “She’s our best filly, so naturally you get a little nervous no matter what when you’re running on a bad track.”

Lewis entered Isabelle in the Cor-onation Cup going 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass against open company July 30 but didn’t run. She entered a state-bred allowance/optional race as main track only the next day but didn’t get to run when the race stayed on the grass. She and Schettine were shop-ping for just the right spot and they found it.

“I really like this filly and I think she’s going to keep improving,” Lewis said.

– Katie Brush and Tom Law

• Gary Contessa was looking for-ward to seeing if he made a good claim of Desert Valentine when he en-tered her in an Aug. 7 allowance race.

He didn’t get the chance that day, but did Wednesday.

“The interesting thing about this

horse is I had her in about five days ago,” Contessa said. “She got loose in the post parade … so we had to scratch her. It was just five days ago and nothing happened to her, thank God.”

Contessa found another spot, Wednesday’s third race and Desert Valentine was much improved going to the post in the 6 ½-furlong state-bred allowance. She won by 2 1/2 lengths in the mud under Luis Saez.

“She was great,” Contessa said. “I think she would have been great that day, too. I’m fortunate that we got to run her today.”

Contessa claimed the 3-year-old daughter of Wild Desert for $20,000 in late June at Belmont Park. She won that day by 7 3/4 lengths and now she’s 2-for-2.

“When you’re claiming horses, sometimes they bite you and some-times you get lucky,” Contessa said. “We got lucky. The guy before us he did a great job with her, presented a nice sound horse. She’s a great big fil-ly and usually heavy horses don’t do well in the mud. I think she’s just a really talented horse and it doesn’t matter.”

• Jockey John Velazquez completed a success-ful ride aboard Chrysolite on a messy track in the eighth and was greeted by trainer David Donk in the winner’s circle as light rain continued to fall.

“She was much better today,” Velazquez told the trainer. The jockey rode the daughter of Freud when she ran a distant third here July 27 in a race that was similarly moved off the turf due to weath-er. The same conditions yielded a more satisfacto-ry result when Chrysolite navigated 7 furlongs in 1:25.78 to win by 2 ¾ lengths.

“She’s a better grass horse,” said Donk. “I’d pre-fer to run her on the grass but these opportunities are OK. I knew she was going to run well and get a piece of it. I knew she was going to hit the board. Last time she was third when they came off, and today she’s the victor.”

The trainer attributed the victory to jockey skill, distance and hardiness

“It might have been a little far for her that day, a mile-and-an-eighth, two turns,” said Donk, again referring to the filly’s last start. “She’s a better grass horse and this wasn’t a stellar field on the dirt. Johnny put her in the game. He knew (Jet Majesty) was the one to beat. He’s a big part of it today.”

– Dan McDonough

• Bruce Brown and Anthony McCarthy kicked off a stellar day when Broadway Bay won the sec-ond race. Spring to the Sky capped the day by win-ning the Troy Stakes. Leading jockey Javier Cas-tellano continued to pad his lead, handling both assignments.

Sent off second choice in a scratch-reduced field of five, Broadway Bay rallied to score a head de-cision over first-time starter Wildniteattheopera in the 7-furlong New York-bred maiden.

“He was good enough to win today. If we get him going longer in the future it’s going to be what he really wants to do,” Brown said. “He’s had flashes but he’s always been a little green, a little immature. I didn’t know if he’d need racing or what, some horses take to it right away.”

Purchased for $50,000 as yearling at Fasig-Tip-ton Timonium in 2012, Broadway Bay made his career debut earlier in the meet, finishing third behind Cuantos and Shimba while sprinting 6 fur-longs. Relying on the mud-loving Cryptoclearance on the dam side, Broadway Bay relished the rain and splashed home a winner.

– Katie Brush

• Wednesday’s card started with the second race after the opening steeplechase, a $65,000 allow-ance going 2 3/8 miles, was canceled due to the weather and soft turf conditions.

The race was rescheduled for Monday.

Larry Collmus stood on the first floor of the grandstand not four hours removed from being named to the most recognizable position in New York racing and discussed his relative anonymity.

“The funny thing is I don’t think people know what I look like,” said Collmus, announced Wednesday as the man who will succeed Tom Durkin in the announcer’s booth at Saratoga Race Course and the other NYRA tracks in 2015. “It’s good and bad. I wouldn’t mind if people came up, but I can walk around and no-body would know.”

Less than a minute later, as if on cue, a racing fan making his way from the backyard to the apron with a program tucked in his pocket spot-ted Collmus and recognized the next voice of Saratoga and the current voice of the Triple Crown and Breed-ers’ Cup.

“Hey new man, how you doin?” the fan said as he passed, getting a laugh from Collmus and a realization from the veteran announcer that may-be he isn’t so anonymous after all.

“You want to have fun with the job and I definitely will have a lot of fun here,” Collmus said. “This whole town is a racing town and I’m look-ing forward to it. Tom has this thing where folks come up to the booth for the third race and I want to contin-

ue that. All the good traditions that he helped foster I’ll try to keep them going.”

Collmus knows he’s got big shoes to fill. He takes the microphone from Durkin, who has called races at NYRA tracks since 1990 and is hugely popular with fans. Collmus has followed in Durkin’s footsteps be-fore, taking over as the announcer on NBC’s broadcasts of the Triple Crown and as the announcer at Gulfstream Park, where Durkin called races in the 1980s and ‘90s.

Collmus will start at NYRA during the Aqueduct spring meet after hon-oring an obligation with Churchill Downs to call the fall meets in Louis-ville and after calling the Gulfstream Park meet from December to April. Collmus will continue to call Gulfst-ream’s races in the winter.

Collmus called his first race at Bow-ie Race Course when he was just 18 and his career has taken him to the now shuttered Birmingham Turf Club to Golden Gate Fields, Suffolk Downs, Monmouth, Gulfstream, Churchill, the Triple Crown, Breeders’ Cup and now the place he calls “the Mecca of horse racing,” Saratoga.

“I’ve dreamed about it and I hoped one day it would happen,” Collmus said. “I was a little emotional in the press conference because it all just sunk in. It was like whoa, this is hap-pening. Here I am and here I’m going to be. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Tod MarksLarry Collmus will be the new voice of NYRA racing.

There is no raining on this family.Mario Martinez was undeterred by

inclement weather as he watched Penel-la splash to victory in Wednesday’s fifth race for Avanti Stable, which also includes Martinez’s wife Dawn and son Dean. All were thrilled and in full throat as Rajiv Maragh and the New York-bred daughter of Bluegrass Cat pulled away for a 7-length victory in the 6-furlong state-bred maiden claimer

“She’s been running really good and today we feel like she was running her best, and lo and behold she won,” said Martinez.

It was a gratifying win for the stable, a stone’s throw from the Spa in Greenfield Center. While Avanti Stable consists of only claimed horses, Marti-nez is also in the process of expanding the operation.

“Right now we’re doing the whole thing, which is the farm operation, the breeding, the babies and the racing on the track,” said Martinez. “Eventually we’ll be racing all of our own horses that we’ve raised. We’re going for top quality by breeding in Kentucky with top stallions. That’s the whole goal.”

For now, a victory like the one regis-tered by Penella will do. The filly was rounded into shape by trainer Debra Divitto and her husband Mike, who own the neighboring farm to Avanti Stable.

“My farm is right up the road in Greenfield but I usually don’t come here unless I’ve got stock to come here,” said Debra. “When I come here I do pretty well. I’ve got a barnful of young horses that we claimed that were all maidens so we’re just taking time to figure them out. Now I can have one more down. When I saw the field I thought this was her day today.”

It was Penella’s day, and it also be-longed to Avanti Stable. Dawn Martinez summed it up.

“It was a good day.” thisishorseracing.com

The commotion of the Saratoga summer year-ling sale season came to a wrap inside the Hum-phrey S. Finney Pavilion late Sunday night. The atmosphere was stronger than the previous night, whether it was from the higher bids or the visible finish line to the near two-week stretch, tension was slightly lower.

The upstairs buyers’ lounge cleared out earlier than normal, as did the Man o’ War Restaurant and bar outside, most of the crowd heading down the street for the traditional end-of-sale celebration at Siro’s.

The Fasig-Tipton New York-bred yearling sale put a cap on the Saratoga sales season and with it an increase in average price and median, slight decrease in total receipts and a rise in the number of horses not sold.

Fasig-Tipton reported sales on 176 of the 272 yearlings offered for a total of $14,099,000, down less than 1 percent from a total of $14,206,000 for 196 yearlings sold in 2013.

The two-day sale’s average price was $80,108, up 10.5 percent from $72,480 last year. Median was up 18.2 percent at $65,000.

The buy-back rate, very low during the opening select sale last week, was 35.3 percent for the New York-bred sale, up from 25.5 percent in 2013.

“There was good demand for quality horses, a diverse group of buyers, there was no one or two groups that have been dominant or significant in controlling the market either of the sales to date,” Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning Jr. said. Fasig-Tipton/Photos by Z

Even though the buy-back rate was up Browning said the sales office was a “zoo” with private sales being conducted after the opening session with more expected into and after the second

“Overall it was a pretty healthy marketplace,” Browning said. “We now have done three (yearling) sales in 2014, the overall response is we’re encour-aged by the yearling market. It’s fairly similar to last year, maybe a little more demand at the upper end.”

The sale’s most expensive yearling was Hip 436, a filly by Lookin At Lucky out of Rose Rhapsody, by Pleasant Colony, purchased by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm for $270,000.

Consigned by Rhapsody Farm/Hidden Lake Farm, agents, the filly is a half sister to Rhumb Line, the dam of Grade 1 winner Zazu, Grade 2 winner Flashback and stakes winner Corinthian’s Jewel.

“She was a very lovely filly, well balanced, good mind on her and of course I bought bloodlines try-ing to take care of the family a little bit,” Pope said.

Pope purchased Rhumb Line in foal to Tapit – the same sire as Zazu – for $2 million at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentuck November mixed sale.

Chris Bernhard, owner of Hidden Lake Farm, and Elaine Peck, owner of Rhapsody Farm, were

thrilled with the sale topper.“I was really excited about coming up here with

her,” Bernhard said. “By a leading 2-year-old sire, big pedigree updates. We figured we were going to be solid, but just over the moon about the fact that she brought what she brought.”

Peck and Bernhard have been worked together for almost six years. In 2013 they sold the most expensive weanling – a Pioneerof the Nile filly that brought $82,000 - at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga October mixed sale. They said they hope to bring a significantly larger consignment in October with close to or more than 60 horses.

The second most expensive yearling at the New York-bred sale was Hip 310, a filly by Tizway out of Free as Tristan, by Crafty Friend, who sold for $250,000 to Hubert Guy, agent. The filly is a half-sister to Amberjack, a $185,000 buy at the 2011 New York-bred sale and winner of the New York Derby and Mike Lee last year. She was con-signed by Marshall Silverman, agent.

“When I saw her she stood out, I thought she was a really, really nice filly,” Guy said. “I kept looking at all the good fillies and she was definitely one of the best three or four. The pedigree, the way she handled herself, they were beautiful. The walk that she had a lot of easiness about her. Everything was easy for her.

“A lot of class as well tonight. For instance, be-fore the sale she was lying down in her stall with all the commotion, so you can see the filly had a very strong mentality, which is really important. Every-

thing was really impressive about her.”Guy said he had to reach a bit for the filly, who

will head south for breaking and training.“I knew she was going to be expensive,” he

said. “I didn’t want to spend that much money, like $180,000 or $200,000, but when I saw the market tonight my reasoning was, ‘why end up paying a lot of money for an average horse, may as well buy something you really like,’ and I really loved that filly. She’s going to Ocala. I might pinhook her. I might race her. I am going to take some partners with me [and] we’ll see where she will be.”

Consignors, buyers and Fasig-Tipton officials all agreed that there was again higher demand for the high-quality horses.

Browning said the market was “softer for the less quality horses,” but added that with the continued improvement of the New York breeding program that better pedigrees and better looking horses are showing up at the sale.

The middle market, strong during the opening select sale, was still a concern for consignors.

“The sale overall has been solid for the top hors-es, but there’s still not a whole lot of the middle market,” Bernhard said. “If you check all the boxes you are going to sell well. If you don’t then you may be left feeling a little disappointed.”

Vinery Sales was the leading consignor with 15 of its 22 yearlings offered sold for $998,000. Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s Denali Stud was second with 15 yearlings sold for $929,000.

Joe Bravo rapped. Rajiv Maragh dressed like an Indian. Julien Lep-aroux was a cop and an outlaw. Joe Rocco Jr. wrote his own song. Rosie Napravnik put on weight. Robbie Da-vis sang a terrible song, but made a great speech.

And the whole place laughed and smiled and sang along.

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund held its annual jockey karaoke benefit Monday night at Vapor Night Club and made singers out of the men and women who ride races in the af-ternoons at Saratoga. The event did not make them good singers, though Mike Luzzi could have a future on the club scene in some New Jersey beach towns.

Maragh (Indian), Leparoux (cop), Rocco (biker) and Andre Worrie (construction worker) let loose on a version of YMCA to take down the coveted trophy for best overall per-

formance. Judges Angel Cordero Jr., Marisa Jacques, Mitch Levites and Graham Motion singled out the quar-tet over a mixed field of competitors that ranged from ridiculous to raspy and energetic to endangering. John and Leona Velazquez sang a duet and looked great doing it. Napravnik and her husband Joe Sharp turned in a rousing rendition of “Baby Got Back” (she was the baby and, well, she had back). Leparoux became Johnny Cash for a few moments and sang Ring of Fire, with a French accent. Rocco re-wrote the lyrics to Rude, with a rac-ing theme and vowed to sing it to any trainer who will give him a ride in a Saratoga stakes.

Live and silent auctions, paced by owners Martin Schwartz and Bill Lawrence, helped the night exceed last year’s total of $78,000 raised.

All for a great cause. The PDJF cares for jockeys around

the country with catastrophic injuries including paralysis and brain inju-ries. The organization’s expenses are staggering, but the work is noble as evidenced by three video examples – of jockeys Jacky Martin, Michael Straight and Stacy Burton – introduced by retired jockey Ramon Dominguez.

Nobody got that more than Davis, who came on stage wearing a mangled cowboy hat and carrying a check. He handed the check to master of cere-monies Tom Durkin, and then tried to sing in place of his son Dylan, a late scratch on the program. Robbie, who won 3,382 races and retired in 2002, made it through the song and then started talking.

The speech rambled. He walked while he talked. He wasn’t easy to hear. He had no notes. He just spoke about why people become jockeys, why they do what they do in spite of the risk and the sacrifice. Sure, there’s a chance to make money but there’s also a chance they could die – at work.

Unless the roof caves in on my office, or I get hit by an out-of-con-trol water truck that careens into the winner’s circle one day, I’m not going to die at work. Jockeys walk around with that risk.

Davis knows this better than any-one. In 1988 at Belmont Park, jockey Mike Venezia died when struck in the head by the hoof of a horse ridden by Davis. It was an accident, a split-sec-ond in a life filled with random, poten-tially catastrophic moments.

But it happened. The two men were close friends and

Davis fought plenty of demons to get back in the saddle and continue his successful career. In 1997, he received the Mike Venezia Award which is giv-en to jockeys who exemplify extraor-dinary sportsmanship and citizenship. Davis retired to life on a farm near Saratoga with his wife Marguerite and their children.

Three – Katie, Jackie and Dylan – became jockeys. Their father became a trainer. His first winner came in December 2011, with Jackie aboard. Robbie even returned to ride a race in 2011 and again last year to ride a handful.

When Davis came on stage Mon-day, he was another amateur singer on a night of laughs, mangled notes, good-natured insults, mistakes and silly costumes. When he stopped try-ing to sing and started trying to speak, Davis became far more than a guy do-ing karaoke.

I listened, I felt the impact and I tapped out some notes. “Crazy good speech,” I wrote. “No plan or script. Beautiful thing.”

As Davis put it Monday night, you don’t become a jockey because you want to. You do so because you can’t help it. You find a bond with the hors-es, you live for that connection, you put other things aside.

You do it, he said, “because you love it.”

In racing news…

Vic Zast’s life will be celebrated this Sunday. A character in a world of characters, Zast died Aug. 6. He was a fragrance executive, racetrack executive, turf writer, golfer, documentary maker, racing fan, friend, father, husband…the list reads long.

I remember when he wanted to write for The Special in our early days. He offered a column a week, I felt like we had arrived – at least, a little – as someone as good as Zast wanted to write for us.

He took me to a Cubs playoff game in 2003. Not any Cubs game, the Steve Bartman game. I hap-pened to be in Chicago that week and he had an extra ticket, of all the friends he had, he welcomed me to my first and only Cubs game. I remember when the game started slipping, just a little, a hit, an error, a run, the Cubs still had a big lead. Zast threw his hands up, “It’s over.” I looked at him and said, “Come on, Vic. You have the lead, you’re OK. Don’t worry.” He just looked at me, a tried and true and battered Cubs fan. In that raspy-Zastian voice said, “Sean, you don’t understand…” Then Bart-man tried to catch a fly ball and I understood, it was indeed over.

Vic’s family is hosting a toast at the track and a breakfast reception in Vic’s honor this Sunday. Section J in the Clubhouse, 8-9:30 a.m. Following toasts at the track, please join them for a breakfast reception in Vic’s honor at their home at 33 Fifth Avenue. 10 a.m. to noon. Vic would like a big turn-out, a big bash, with lots of laughter and banter.

Jump trainer Eddie Graham is going to Arlington Park with Hardest Core. He’ll try to turn the My Lady’s Manor/Arlington Million double. It’s never been done before.

Larry Collmus was hired to replace Tom Durkin – or I should write – Collmus was hired as the next announcer at NYRA. No one will replace Durkin. Collmus has worked his way to the top and will undoubtedly carry the torch. Here’s a shout-out to John Imbriale, a true professional who has been a credit to the sport for many years.

Wednesday’s jump race is rescheduled for Mon-day.

Wayne Catalano is coming home from the hospi-tal after weeks of fighting for his life after catching bird flue and pneumonia. Arlington Park just got a jolt.

Now, in other news…

Violent protests broke out in Ferguson, Mo. af-ter unarmed 18-year-old Mike Brown was shot and killed by police.

A three-day ceasefire is almost over in Gaza. It appears nothing has changed.

Tony Stewart ran over and killed Kevin Ward Jr. Saturday night while driving in a sprint-car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in upstate New York. Stewart and Ward veered high around a turn and Ward crashed into the wall. The young driver climbed out of his car and ran onto the middle of the track, gesturing at Stewart. Several drivers passed him, Stewart’s car clipped Ward with its right rear

tire. Outrage, accusations and sadness ensued. A young man is dead.

Record rain flooded parts of Long Island Wednes-day. Saratoga is off the turf, Islip is off the map with 13 inches of rain.

The Ebola virus has erupted across four African nations. Experts have used the term, “unprecedent-ed” to describe the outbreak. I read The Hot Zone 20 years ago. Terrifying.

Robin Williams is dead. The comedic genius died from an apparent suicide. This one rocks you. A man that talented, that (financially) secure, that re-spected, that loved…struggling that desperately.

Williams served as a GPS for our generation, as we navigated through life; Mork and Mindy, the World According to Garp, Dead Poet’s Society, Good Morning Vietnam, Good Will Hunting, I re-member where I was, who I was with, who I was when I saw each for the first time.

I still have the ticket stub from Good Will Hunt-ing, watched with my college roommate Paul Was-serman, in Florida, I felt better when I walked out of that theatre.

Now, he’s gone. Genius is hard to comprehend. Harder now.

Lauren Bacall died Tuesday. What man didn’t fall for her? That sultry voice and those lines, delivered like hot fudge over a vanilla ice cream cone. “It’s even better when you help,” as she walks away in To Have and Have Not. Then, even better, “You don’t have to say anything and you don’t have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just a whistle. You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.” Yowza.

Idea for Driver’s Eye TestWhy do you simply look at an antique eye chart when

your car is going an average of 35 miles per hour. Let’s change that system to a video running the last sixteenth of a mile of a turf race and the driver must

determine who won the photo (same speed as horses). “It was the 1, no… it was the 3,

maybe the 5, Squiggly line?”

Race 5. #9 Bar of Gold (5-1)Race 9. #7. Run to Mama (12-1)

Today will be a tribute to the horseman-ship of John Kimmel. He unleashed a nice first time starter earlier in the meet so we

will throw a fin on his in the fifth. Later in the card, if it stays on,

Run to Mama gets back on turf! Meet record 17-1-4-3.

$5 to win on all longshots: +$35.
