Mud salamander. We conducted surveys of historical mud salamander habitats in 2006. Charles County (Nanjemoy watershed) was the only place we found any.
Samp darter – rare fish. Zekiah’s swamp has some of the largest populations in the state
Rainbow Snake. A beautiful and very rare stream dwelling snake. It apparently eats almost exclusively eels. In MD they are only found in Charles County and were thought to be extirpated until 2007 when someone found one.
Dragonflies – there are many rare species of dragonflies in MD. Charles County (especially Zekiah’s Swamp) has lots of them. The young (larval) dragonflies live in freshwater streams and are predators on other insects and sometimes fish and tadpoles too.
