CHAPTER DIRECTORS

Mickey and Mary Searels

Hello Chapter M,

We hope this article finds everyone well and healthy, and hopefully eager to get

back in the saddle. We will be at jimmy’s and Bj’s this month they are always great host!!

Remember to wear your mask and you know the drill by now. Bring your drink and there will be a ride after, so pack a brown bag

snack for the road. We are coming up with new ideas for riding, many chapters are not riding but we are doing our best to get out

there. Been hot and Rainey but a little rain will do us good!! Watch your emails for rides because we will be doing some different

things and it will require you to get the information before the ride.

In September your District MA will be putting out a Chapter Challenge to all Chapters in Louisiana I think you will all like it. We

have held all banners high in Chapter M and I know we will this one too!!

I know these are trying times, lets all stay safe and enjoy riding our bikes together.

See you Saturday

Thoughts for safety

Riding a motorcycle through curvy roads is one of the greatest joys of the two-wheeled

sport.

Many new riders are intimidated by their machines, feeling that they lack skills needed to

navigate a twisty road safely and efficiently. In worst case scenarios, these riders approach

turns haphazardly, entering into a turn too fast and too soon.

Learning how to properly ride through a turn can, at times, be difficult, but with practice,

cornering will become second nature.

Let’s look at basic cornering process: First LOOK AHEAD of where you are traveling. This is

obvious but not always instinctual for many riders. Riders whether new or experience that are

nervous tend to look in the near distance. The best is too looking well ahead of where you are

traveling so you can handle what is coming up.

SLOW: Doesn’t mean you have to use your brakes and or downshift to reduce your speed in a

corner.

You must evaluate whether or not you need to adjust your speed to maneuver a corner with

plenty of traction and skill to spare. If in doubt, slow down you can always accelerate if you

slow down too much.

LEAN: You initiate lean by counter-steering. A lot of riders believe that they are able to

maneuver their motorcycle by simply leaning their body or by looking into the turn. While

these are helpful techniques for assisting the bike to turn, they alone cannot effectively cause

a 900+ pound machine to change direction.

Also, consider that most people who don’t think they are counter-steering really are, they just

don’t know it. Pay close attention the next time you are making any sort of turn and notice

how you put a slight amount of pressure on the inside handlebar. The most effective way to

get a motorcycle to go from upright to a leaned is to introduce handlebar inputs. By pressing

forward on the handlebar on the side that you want to turn, you essentially unbalance the

bike so that it “falls” into a lean. Press on the right handlebar to initiate a lean to the right and

press on

Page 5: MUDBUGS NEWSLETTER · 2020. 8. 2. · Newsletter Editor: Thomas Reed Newsletter@chapterlam.com Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge Louisiana District CHAPTER LA-M Next Meeting

the left handlebar to turn left. Counter steering is used whenever you need to change di-

rection.

This applies to basic cornering maneuvers, as well as evasive maneuvers, such as swerving.

It’s also important to be able to counter-steer with authority when a corner suddenly tightens

more than you expected, or when you approach a tight corner at a too fast speed. When

speeds and lean angles increase, it’s beneficial to use a more “active” body position that

provides a greater amount of turning ease and ground clearance.

There are three levels of body positioning for cornering: The “basic”, “intermediate”, and

“full” hang off techniques. I am only going to mention the BASIC body position as that is the

position used for typical street speeds. This position involves simply leaning your upper body

off-center, towards the inside of the turn. Position yourself as if you are kissing your mirror.

Keep your inside shoulder low and forward while your eyes look through the curve. Your butt

stays more-or-less centered on the seat. The basic position is easy to do and is not intimidat-

ing, making it good for people just learning to hang off.

Accelerate: Once leaned, you need to crack the throttle and continue to accelerate gradually

through to the corner exit. The basic explanation for why you need to do this is that it stabi-

lizes the suspension and chassis. Gradual acceleration also loads both tires for maximum grip.

Do not hesitate in acquiring these skills, because one day you too may find yourself facing a

curve that you cannot handle. The best place to begin is in a parking lot where you will learn

to lean your motorcycle

Thanks

See you at the meeting

Cheeseburger Soup

Ingredients

1/2 pound ground beef

4 tablespoons butter, divided

3/4 cup chopped onion

3/4 cup shredded carrots

3/4 cup diced celery

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes

1-3/4 pounds (about 4 cups) cubed peeled potatoes

3 cups chicken broth

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 to 4 cups shredded Velveeta

1-1/2 cup whole milk

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon pepper

1/4 cup sour cream

Directions

In a large saucepan over medium heat, cook and crumble beef until no longer pink; drain and set aside. In same saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat. Sauté onion, carrots, celery, basil and parsley until vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes. Add potatoes, ground beef and broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, until potatoes are tender, 10-12 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a small skillet, melt remaining butter. Add flour; cook and stir until bubbly, 3-5 minutes. Add to soup; bring to a boil. Cook and stir 2 min-utes. Reduce heat to low. Stir in cheese, milk, salt and pepper; cook until cheese melts. Remove from heat; blend in sour cream.
