The great adventure of life is never done alone. We live for each other, we support one another. This is the essence of humanity—to work together to face challenges, great or small. This month’s issue is all about teams that best exemplify togetherness, whether in triumph or despair. These groups share their recipe for fun and success that help them brave and get through the challenges up ahead. On our cover: a group of boisterous professionals-turned-triathletes—doctors, lawyers, and businessmen—called the Last Minute Tri Team. They seek an escape from the daily stresses of life, and, in doing so, they see triathlon as one big party to let off some steam. Don’t underestimate them, though, as they are still some pretty serious racers. From a new team, we move on to a more established roster: Yellow Cab Tri Clark, led by Jumbo Tayag, who shares with us his wisdom and experience as he provides some great tips every group of people looking to start a team should definitely take heed.
Meanwhile, from the competitive world of cycling, the Santé Barley Cycling Team lets us in on how to achieve success on both the team trial and the general classification events. The team time trial event is considered a prestigious event in cycling, where a team of usually nine riders race against time and are sent out in intervals. This event is a true test of teamwork; the unit must work as one and each individual must perform at their highest level. Also, chef/triathlete Carlo Miguel of The Starting Line recounts his experience from this year’s Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines, which happened on his birthday. He learned a lot from this race not only from his personal experience, but as well as his team, which was instrumental in his success. On this issue’s By the Numbers, we look at the DLSU track and field team, the Green Tracksters, as they suit up for a better UAAP season ahead and learn from the mistakes of the past. May this issue inspire you to join or form a team that fits who you are, and most importantly, brings out the best in you!

Vitamin C increases the amount of iron we can absorb from plant sources such as kale, broccoli, and sprouts. The recommended nutrient intake for adults is 40 milligrams per day.
Unlike simple sugars that offer a quick yet fleeting boost of energy, pasta aids in sustaining energy. Choose whole wheat pasta, which can provide up to 25 percent of daily fiber requirements in every one-cup portion.
Pine-Berry Salad Serves 4 to 6Cucumbers, pineapples, and strawberries are refreshing, full of fiber, and rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, iron, and water. These foods help cleanse the system, hydrate the body, and maintain its temperature.
To make the dressing, combine a cup of Greek yogurt, two tsps calamansi juice, and two tbsps chopped celery stalk in a small bowl. Season with salt and white pepper powder. Mix well to combine. Refrigerate and keep chilled. In another bowl, combine five cups sliced cucumber, two cups cubed pineapple (if using canned, drain well), two cups shredded spinach or watercress, and a cup of sliced fresh strawberries. Add the dressing and toss well. Serve chilled.
Pasta Chicken PestoServes 6If you want nutritious and satisfying meals, pasta is perfect as it is generally eaten with nutrient-dense food partners such as fiber-filled vegetables and beans, heart-healthy fish, antioxidant-rich tomato sauce, and protein-packed cheeses, poultry, and lean meats.
In a skillet, heat ½ cup of olive oil and sauté three minced cloves of garlic until fragrant. Add ½ kilo of chicken breast fillet (cut into strips) and cook until golden in color. Season with salt, pepper, and, if you want a spicy kick, two fresh chillies. Add a cup of shredded spinach and ¼ cup of white wine (optional) to pan, scraping the bottom bits off the pan. Let it simmer for a minute. Add 250 grams pesto sauce and ½ cup of cream, then simmer for about five minutes. Pour sauce over your choice of 500-gram pasta (cooked according to package directions) then top with crumbled feta cheese.

1 Get along.“Being in a team is like forming a company. Everyone should
agree. You should also manage the team well to attain your objectives.”
2Share a common vision or objective.“It’s the reason why our group
is still intact up to now. Look at it as a long-term plan. Our activities are guided by these objectives (like growing the sport of triathlon). We don’t just race and wear uniforms. It’s beyond that.”
3Establish rules and appoint officers.“When we incorporated our
team in 2007, we established officers for a two-year term. So there’s a president, vice-president, treasurer, PRO, and directors. Aside from the officers, we also have coaches and a team captain.”
“Getting sponsorship is a difficult process. Mostly we approach our
friends and connections to sponsor us. It’s like being a sales person.
We write a proposal, submit a profile, and establish a relationship
with them. We look at sponsors as long-term partners so we take our
responsibilities with them very seriously. Responsibilities mean
visiting them regularly, submitting reports on our progress, ensuring
prominent logo placement on tri suits and banners, acknowledging them on
social media, and many more.”
Talk of the TownOriginally eight members known as Tribe 8 Tri, Team Yellow Cab-Tri Clark was founded in 2005. “We renamed and incorporated the team as Tri Clark Multi Sport Association, Inc. in 2007 as our group grew.” Interestingly enough, the team's name can be interpreted another way depending on how you look at it. “Tri meaning triathlon but it can also be Try Clark as we are also advocates of sports tourism development in our area,” says Tayag. In 2008, it partnered with Yellow Cab and has gone on to become one of the circuit's model triathlon teams, with 70 members total.

“We've always been predominantly male but recently female triathletes have been joining our roster, which is good. A mixed group is always better for balance and to tame some of the ‘A’ personalitiesin the group.”

have a lot of advantages: you get better deals with sponsors, when traveling
together, and when purchasing tri suits and bike
stuff. Bigger teams have their challenges as well, especially
in communication. It's also very difficult to organize 70 people
with busy schedules.”

Trust us: You’ve seen these guys and gals before. You might have noticed a boisterous group
tailgating at the parking lot in a big local triathlon event, or you might have wondered why a bunch of triathletes were goofing off right before a race where everyone else is anxious and jittery. Or you might have come across them on these very pages exactly this time last year, when MultiSport Philippines briefly featured them in the now-defunct Tracklist section. Whatever it is, they’ve been quietly generating some buzz, one way or another.
Until now. Until this cover. Until this story. Hello, triathlon world—we give you the Last Minute Tri Team.
Before anything, we’ve already read your mind. Why “Last Minute,” you ask? Well, as the oft-repeated story goes, the team's four friends and founders Gino Macapagal, Carlo Castro, Don Taguiam, and Arvin Ison decided to try their hand at triathlon after getting into cycling for three years. As Castro and Macapagal were staring at a blank online registration form for the Ironman 70.3 Philippines relay back in 2012, they discovered that their team needed a name, something they've never needed before. Realizing they decided to join the race on a whim in the last few hours of the last registration day (on top of going for the last few race slots), they couldn't help but call themselves the Last Minute Tri Team.
You’ve seen them before—maybe not the group itself, but you’ve seen its members in the throngs who join the three-sport event. The everyman triathlete is the demographic the team represents, the kind of athlete we want to reach out and talk to, the Average Joe and Jane who isn't genetically gifted with the body and skills of an elite athlete, but is willing nonetheless
to put in the necessary time and effort to do well and live a healthy, active lifestyle. Last Minute Tri Team represents the people who have day jobs, but still want to do this—its own members consist of doctors, lawyers, and professionals, none of whom are really in this to be the next Frank Lacson or Monica Torres.
Case in point: they weren’t complete athletes from day one, and a lot of them had to start from the ground
up relatively late. “Can you believe that six months before our first triathlon,” says Castro, “none of us knew how to swim?” Coach Moi Yamoyam taught them everything they needed to know about swimming, completely bypassing poor form, something their current coach, Jay Valencia, is grateful for.
Now, while they don't exactly dominate the scene, they describe their game as respectable. Members Anna Driz bagged fifth overall in the sprint of this year’s Dagupan Invitational Triathlon, Mark Saquing finished first overall in the sprint of the recent Tri United 2, and Anna Mapua dominated her age group in last year’s event. On top of that, the team has bona fide Ironman 70.3 finishers across the board.
Members consider triathlon a second life—or an adventure, if you will—away from the rigors of the daily grind, and it’s helped them keep their feet on the ground. The team is one big family, with everyone and their significant others supporting each other in events. And it’s a family that is pretty easy to get into. Prospective members just start training with the team, and if they prove that they can jibe with the whole group, then they’re in. This team wants to grow its family and make triathlon accessible to anyone who wants to get into it.
Most importantly, having fun seems to be an important team policy. The team treated this photoshoot as a reason to celebrate and let loose despite the blazing heat. It proved that triathlon, while requiring maximum physical effort, doesn’t have to be a joyless endeavor. “We see triathlon as a stress release,” says Castro when he explains why the team is so jolly during events and in general. “We’re just here to have fun. Ako, I do triathlon because I want to eat whatever I want!”
So now that Last Minute Tri is here for the world to see, what’s next for its members? That’s easy: international competition. “We’re planning to send some of our members to Southeast Asian events,” says Castro, with a hint of excitement in his eyes. “Paulit-ulit na rin yung iba sa amin sa Cebu.” And why not, right? Just because they don’t take triathlon super seriously, doesn’t mean they can’t dream big and go out to see the world in the name of the game.
In the meantime, let them stand as hope and inspiration for those who wanna try tri. They’ve proven, with their own burgeoning numbers and unique brand of success, that anyone can take the plunge—even at the last minute.

MAXIMIZING RIDES“When out training, you must always
ensure all riders get the most out of the sessions. This could mean
domestiques starting the session then the stronger riders taking over
to finish it off hard and fast. We could just get a paceline working a quick
swap for the whole ride with a focus on keeping the pace above a certain speed or average. This teaches and
refines the paceline skills needed by all teams and then each rider must
be 100 percent focused for the whole ride to ensure he does his job.”
TIPS FOR TEAMSGLENN LEE BREAKS DOWN WHAT MAKES A TEAM CLICK
1 “The team has to be made up of riders who
complement each other and cover all the disciplines. You need domestiques, sprinters, climbers, and time trialists. If you lack some talent in one area, the team will suffer.”
2 “The riders have to commit to training
schedules. They have to be prepared to train as a team and then to work on their individual talents and fitness when training without the team.”
3 “Training drills need to be implemented
to ensure all riders learn the riding styles of each member and learn the basics of riding as a team.”
Controlling its own destiny seems to be second nature to the Santé Barley Cycling Team. Despite riding together for several years, the strong 12-member cycling squad was only officially formed this year after realizing, says team captain Glenn Lee, “we were best to do our own team.” Their decision has paid off. Sante Barley has been racing up the ranks and racking up wins—most recently at the Tour of Clark where it swept the top three spots in the rider General Classification (GC) as well as the team GC. But destiny appears to have plotted other pursuits for Santé Barley, too. “We are also enjoying a very competitive team time trial and fun rivalry with Fitness First, another great team,” confesses Lee. “We won our first encounter by eight seconds and they won the second encounter by eight seconds. That's what's great about racing—close finishes and then having a good friendship with your competitors."
ROLE PLAYING“We do team-specific training for time trials and for practicing the
execution of race plans. Different team members have different
goals or roles to do based on their individual skills. Some of us are
climbers, time trialists, or sprinters based on the race type. Course and
distance will determine what role each team member plays. The most
important thing to remember is that it takes all the team working as one to
be successful on a consistent basis.”
TAKE A BACK SEAT“The first thing that has to be clearly
defined is that all team members must put their personal ambitions aside. Everything each rider does
has to be solely for the team. Each team member has to be willing to sacrifice himself or herself for the designated team member that has
the best chance of winning the event. It’s actually the hardest thing to achieve, finding 12 riders willing
to sacrifice personal glory for the team's success.”

How was your Ironman 70.3 experience this year? It was a painful one, as I was over an hour slower than last year. I had a solid swim, one of my fastest yet thanks
to my teammate and swim coach, Nonoy Basa. The bike this year was a completely different animal, and an ugly one at that. The head winds and extra U-turns took their toll on my legs and drastically slowed my bike split. I also made the mistake of miscalculating my hydration, which resulted in me going into T2 severely dehydrated and with a very high heart rate, which I was not able to recover from. I finished with a very slow run, but I finished happy as it was my birthday race!
How did your team perform overall this year? My team, The Starting
Line (TSL), had some very good results this year. Our TSL all-girl relay team took first place in its category, and my other teammate, Sid Maderazo, came in fourth in his age group with a time of 5:09. It won him a slot in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Plus, there were a lot of other solid performances from the rest.
How did your team support you and each other during the race? I saw many friends and teammates all along the course, and we were constantly encouraging each other and they were wishing me

"My thoughts during the race were very positive until the run!" (laughs)
a happy birthday! It was a very festive atmosphere! Also, one of my teammates had a bad crash, but still managed to finish with a very good time. When I saw him bloody and bruised, it inspired me to finish.
What areas do you feel you need to improve on? Do you think the support from your team and coach could help you improve? I'll be back next year with a vengeance I will work on a solid race plan with my coach and work more in training with my team so I can have a strong race!

Do you feel any sort of pressure whenever you compete at races like 5150 Bohol? I expect to feel very relaxed before the race. I've never been to the Philippines before so I'm very much anticipating the experience. I will not put any pressure on myself as Bohol seems like such a beautiful place to race. I will be just trying to enjoy the experience and have fun with everyone on the course.
What drew you to race here? The fact that I've never been here before was a draw card. I love destination races and this is certainly one of them. I've heard about how much Filipinos love triathlon, so I would like to share the joy of racing with them and to also pass on some of my racing knowledge to whomever I happen to interact with over the race weekend. I would also like to inspire local children to take up triathlon or choose a healthy lifestyle.
Share one piece of advice to athletes competing in their first 5150. I would say to not put pressure on oneself. We all begin triathlon because we want a challenge; we want to be fit and to have fun. Don't lose sight of those motivations. It's great to be competitive, but don't do it at the detriment of feeling stressed about a race or potential outcome. Just try to have fun!

Do you feel any sort of pressure whenever you compete at races like 5150 Bohol? I usually don’t get too nervous before races and I don’t think I will feel too much pressure. Triathlon is something that I enjoy so I think I will be just excited to be racing in such a beautiful location.
What do you think is the most crucial for you in order to win the event? I would like to have a good swim and really push hard on the bike. If I do both of those things, I can hopefully finish off with a strong run. Do you have any triathlon-specific skincare regimen? We are always out in the sun and at the pool, so I always wear sunscreen and regularly moisturize my skin. What are your goals coming in to 5150 Bohol? And what are your goals for the rest of the year? I would love to be able to have a race win in Bohol before heading back to Australia to finish my season. I want to finish the year on a high, so I am hoping to have some strong races at home. Share one piece of advice to athletes competing in their first 5150 Come to the race prepared, with all your gear in check and ready to race on. Enjoy yourself!

We know what you’re thinking. Track and field is not the same as triathlon, even though there
might be aspects of the two that are similar. But track, for those who aren’t aware, might very well be the ultimate team sport—you’ve got the success of the whole relying solely on the performance of its parts. No one is allowed to slack off as team members try to win gold in their respective events in order to advance the team’s standing.
So if the sport is focused on individual performance at its very core, how does a track team train together? “Individual talaga siya,” says senior Jasper Tanhueco, the Tracksters’ team captain. “’Pag conditioning, we train together. Then ‘pag 'yung specific sport na, siyempre we focus [on that]. We also run, all of us. Yun 'yung bonding namin.”
The team is set to take home the UAAP track and field championship this year after an admittedly lackluster 2013 campaign, and it's got nothing to worry about as long as it's figured out a way to make things work.
