    4 Trishna

DESCRIPTION: Another restaurant frequented by the who's who of Mumbai, Trishna is consideredone of the best in the world. Butter pepper garlic king crab is Trishna's signature dish, but you'llalso find jumbo pomfrets and tiger prawns (done in any style) cooked to perfection. Despiteits reputation as a somewhat snobbish restaurant, Trishna isn't about ambience (the decor infact is somewhat tacky) -- everyone is here for the food. Recommended dishes include pomfretHyderabadi -- barbecued with black pepper, it's a true masterpiece; pomfret hariyali envelopedin green masala and baked in a tandoor; fish sholay kebab; Kolhapuri prawns (spicy, so order adrink); or squid expertly prepared with butter, pepper, and garlic. Staff tends to be rather snooty, and if you ask for menu suggestions you're sure to be recommended the most expensive items onthe menu. HistoryOriginally made of seven islands, Colaba,Fort, Byculla, Parel, Worli, Matunga andMahim, today Mumbai extends up toMulund and Dahisar. Land reclamationsover the years have connected the sevenislands into a single city. The severalhistorical places of interest include TheGateway of India, Mani Bhavan, ThePrince of Wales Museum, HutatmaChowk(Flora Fountain), Victoria Gardensand Museum, The Jehangir Art Gallery,Nehru Planetarium and Nehru ScienceCentre. It is also a place that is rich in

ancient history. Stone age implementshave been found at several sites in theseislands. Later, around the third century BC,the coastal regions, and presumably theislands, were part of the Magadh empireruled by the emperor Ashok.

Around this time the empire ebbed, leavingbehind some Buddhist monks and deep-

sea fishermen called Kolis. Now thesefisher folk worship Goddess Mumbadevi, and that is how this metropolis got its name.

Bombay has been ruled by many leaders. The islands belonged to the Silharadynasty until the middle of the 13th century. The oldest structures in the caves atElephanta, and a part of the Walkeshwar Temple complex probably date from thistime. Modern sources identify a 13thcentury Raja Bhimdev, who had hiscapital in Mahikawati(present day Mahimand Prabhadevi). Presumably the firstmerchants and agriculturists started settlingin Mumbai during this time. In 1343 theisland of Salsette, and eventually thewhole archipelago, passed to the Sultan of Gujarat. Even the mosque in Mahim dates

from this period. In 1508, Francis Almeida sailed into thedeep natural harbor of the island, which hiscountrymen came to call Bom Bahia(theGood Bay). And Bahadur Shah of Gujaratwas forced to cede the main islands tothe Portuguese in 1534, before he wasmurdered by the proselytizing invaders. Now the Portuguese were not interestedin the islands, although they built a fortin Bassein, some fortifications, and afew chapels for the converted fishermen. The St. Andrew's church in Bandra datesfrom this period. For years, the Dutch andthe British tried to get information on thesea route to India, often by spying. Butthe reports of such spies never bother tomention Bombay.

Eventually, in 1661, Catherine of Braganzagave away these islands to Charles II of England as part of her marriage dowry. The British East India Company receivedit from the crown in 1668, founded themodern city, and shortly thereafter movedtheir main holdings from Surat to Bombay.George Oxenden was the first Governor of Bombay. The intricate web of commerce, which had supported the civilization of theIndian Ocean literally died with the arrivalof the Europeans. The Mughal empire inDelhi was not drawn much to the navies, despising the Portuguese and the Britishas'merchant princes.' But the second

Barring the odd 24-hour hotels, check-outtime is usually noon. Most establishments,on request and depending on roomvacancy, do allow a delay of a few hoursor so. While deciding on where to stay, you

must remember that for a city blessed withbalmy, sultry weather, air-conditioned roomsmake much more sense. October-Februaryare the only months when you can gowithout an air-conditioner. But the dividingline between a mid-range and a better budget hotel can be space constraints,an air-conditioner, and a fridge.
