Neighborhoods in Brief
Altstadt-- This is the historic part of Munich, the site of the original medieval city. The Altstadt is bounded
by the Odeonsplatz and Sendlinger Tor (Tor means gate! to the north and the south, respectively, and by
the "sartor and #arlstor to the east and $est. %ou can $al& across the district in ' minutes.
The hub is Marienplatz, the to$n)s primary s*uare, $ith its +athaus (To$n all!. "n the Middle Ages,
Marienplatz $as the scene of many ousts and tournaments as $ell as public entertainment li&e eecutions.
Today, it is brimming $ith mimes, musicians, and street performers. The s*uare is also the site of many
festivals and political rallies and is the traditional stopping and starting place for parades and processions.
"ncluded in the Altstadt district is the /ussg0nger (pedestrian! 1one, home to many of Munich)s elegantshops.
Haidhausen-- This district is home to 2asteig, the city)s primary cultural, educational, and conference
center. The modern comple houses the city library and the Munich 3hilharmonic Orchestra. "ts various
theaters and lecture halls play host to a variety of events, principally musical and theatrical performances.
The district is also a trendy nightlife center.
Lehel-- 4ust east of the Altstadt, this district is part of the original planned epansion of the city that
occurred in the latter years of the '5th century. The area is mainly residential and is noted for its fine neo-
+enaissance architecture.
Ludwigstrasse-- One of Munich)s great monumental avenues, this street $as originally designed for #ing
6ud$ig " as a street $orthy of his &ingdom. The buildings in the southern section of the street adhere to a
strict neoclassical style, $hereas the architecture in the northern sector is neo-+omanes*ue. The overall
effect is that of uniformity.Maximilianstrasse-- The e*uivalent of 7e$ %or&)s /ifth Avenue, Maimilianstrasse is Munich)s 2oldenMile. 3lanned as a sho$case for #ing Maimilian "")s dominion, it has architecture in $hat is &no$n as
Maimilianic style, an eclectic combination of styles $ith an emphasis on 2othic. ere you find the city)s
most elegant and epensive bouti*ues, restaurants, and hotels. 8isitors can bro$se through stores li&e
Armani, erm9s, and :ulgari. Along $ith numerous chic hotels and restaurants, the street is also home to
the Museum of ;thnology and the overpo$ering monument to the &ing, the Mamonument. The street is
the primary connector from the Altstadt to the suburbs of 6ehel and aidhausen.
Olympiapark-- ost to roc& and pop concerts as $ell as other performances, this residential and

Nymphenburg-- 6ocated ust north$est of the city center is the 7ymphenburg 3alace and 3ar&, the
original home of the @ittelsbach rulers. The baro*ue palace is home to the famous 7ymphenburg porcelain
museum and factory. Adoining the palace is a vast epanse of la&es and gardens.
Schwabing-- This area, in the city)s northern sector, $as (in the '5=s and then, again, after @orld @ar ""
and into the '5s! a center of bohemian life, much li&e 7e$ %or&)s 2reen$ich 8illage. 6i&e 2reen$ich
8illage, it has gentrified into a locale for la$yers, producers, and other professionals, as $ell as a hangout
for university students and a lively nightlife scene. At the start of the =th century, it $as the place $herethe city)s leading artists, actors, poets, musicians, and $riters lived or gathered. Many famous literary
figures have called Sch$abing home, including Thomas Mann. "t has the city)s finest eamples of Art
7ouveau architecture. 6eopoldstrasse ma&es almost a straight ais through its center. The ;nglischer
2arten forms its eastern border, the Studentenstadt is to its north, and Olympiapar& and 4osephsplatz mar&

Arabellapark-- The city)s ultramodern commercial and industrial *uarter, northeast of the city center, is
home to several large international companies. "ts glass-and-concrete buildings have become an
outstanding feature of Munich)s s&yline.
Bogenhausen-- 6ocated ust northeast of the city center and near Arabellapar&, this area, li&e Sch$abing,
has many ecellent eamples of Art 7ouveau architecture. Once the district $here the prosperous had theirhomes, :ogenhausen is no$ home to numerous galleries, bouti*ues, and restaurants.
Briennerstrasse-- Besigned as part of the development of the Mavorstadt during the reign of Maimilian", this street $as home to the aristocratic families and $ealthy citizens of Munich. Today it has galleries and
luury shops.
Maxorstadt-- 6aunched as a planned epansion of the city by #ing Maimilian ", the area today dra$s
its character from the facilities of the Cniversity of Munich, and it teems $ith student bars, boo&shops, and
galleries.

ensemble, which houses several outstanding collections. With its lavishly decorated interior and
the famous "allery of Beauties" commissioned by !udwig , the palace is one of Munich#s
favorite attractions. $mong the highlights are the former bedroom of %ing !udwig and the
impressive banquet hall with fine ceiling frescoes by &ohann Baptist 'immermann.

atmosphere in the Bavarian national colors, silver and blue.
The charming pavilion was a present from )lector %arl $lbrecht to his wife $malia, a daughter of)mperor &oseph
Built by *uvilli+s between -/ and -0, the $malienburg is considered to be the loveliestpleasure pavilion in the )uropean rococo tradition.
Badenburg
First heated indoor pool of modern times. 1ublic bathing scene for the court#s en2oyment3 the
Badenburg was built with this idea in mind. The heated, tiled pool 4 quite rare for the period 4
opens onto a hall decorated in stucco marble. &osef )ffner built the pavilion in -045. t was
later remodeled by %len6e.

The architecture, interior decoration and wor;s of art collected in the Aesiden6 range in time
from the Aenaissance, via the early Baroque and Aococo periods to the neoclassical era. They all
bear witness to the discriminating taste and the political ambition of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
The Aesiden6 houses a number of museums and monuments maintained by the Bavarian

What is now called the *uvilli+s4Theater, after its architect, FranSois *uvilli+s the )lder, consists
of the auditorium of a theatre that )lector Ma(imilian &oseph built in -H4HH as his "new
opera house". 7riginally reserved e(clusively for members of court, the theatre lay in close
pro(imity to the Aesiden6. Many lavish opera productions were mounted here, including the firstperformances of Mo6art#s domeneo, in -E.
The building housing the theatre was destroyed on E March 0//. ts place on the site between
the %>nigsbau of the Aesiden6 and the ?ationaltheater on Ma(4&oseph41lat6 was ta;en by the

Frescoes on a gold ground originally decorated the vaulting and the apses. The floor of the
church once consisted of coloured marble and the walls were clad with plaster imitation marble.ou can see remains of this imitation marble on the entrance wall. *olumns of red marble
support the galleries. !udwig could reach the galleries directly from the Aesiden6 to attend
Mass. The populace entered the church via the portal in the east faSade, which %len6e designed
in a combination of Aomanesque and othic styles.

The )nglish arden is both beautifully designed and historically very important as the first public
garden on the *ontinent, which paved the way for the further development of public green
areas in towns. With its generous dimensions and constantly changing views of par; architecture
and landscape features, with its enclosed spaces and the play of light and shade, the )nglish
arden is an outstanding e(ample of a classical landscape garden.

The 1oets# arden 8former Finance arden:, with a area of around 5 hectares, is located on the
site of a bastion built in 9E during the Thirty ears# War. With the founding of the Theatiner
Monastery, the grounds were given to the mon;s for use as a ;itchen garden and a garden house
was built on it. n -H0 the electoral observatory, which is no longer in e(istence, was installed in
the ruins of this garden house. Today the Deinrich Deine Fountain is located in the grotto below

Today the most famous taproom in Munich attracts locals and tourists ali;e for a casual light
meal and a liter of beer in the DofbrCuhaus. The XBeer 1alaceY has been turned into a multi4
