This list contains the names of seventy-three persons, twenty- four of whom appear to derive their names from places of which some may be still identified in the immediate neigh- bourhood of the town. 'No. 3. "Compotus" of Tallage made in July 1322 (16 Ed. II). This Tallage was applied to the service of shipping, due from Eavershain as being within the liberties of the Cinque Ports; to gifts to the Lord Warden on his visiting the town ; and to the cost of litigation. No. 4. Arrears of the last-mentioned Tallage. This also contains seventy-three names, but some few are illegible. No. 5. Arrears of Pine made in April 1323 (16 Ed. II). This list has twenty-four names, and a sum. (illegible) assessed on the King's Mill belonging to the Manor of Faversham. No. 6. Arrears of Tallage made August 1324 (18 Ed. II). No. 1. " Oompotus" from 30 Nov. 1304 to 1 Aug. 1305(33 and 34 Ed. I). that the Abbot and the Almoner of Faversham are jointlycharged.

The Accounts in No. 1 (Com/potus, 1304-5) are fairlycopied on three annexed slips of parchment, and seem tohave been written shortly after those already published. Acopy of them is now given, omitting the items between1 Dec. 1304 and 22 July 1305 already printed, excepta few which in the later copy have been made more in-telligible.

A writ of capias was issued against Thomas Everard11

(the Mayor), Robert Dod,13 Nicolas de Breule,*2 John de Wen,Walter Bealde,18 Simon Baldok,21 Nicolas Yue, Wolmer leBealde,18 John de Wing-ham, Walter de Upmanton,10 Stephenate Melle,51 Walter le Marischal,2 Stephen Glanvyle,26 Thomasde TJpmanton10 (son of Walter), William Blakernan, Thomasde Copeton,48 Walter Ostreman,86 John Homan, Adam Ship-man,26 Hamo Dagh,38 and Alfred Dagh38 to appear on themorrow of S. John the Baptist, and answer Philip de Jute-bergh on a plea of trespass. Some of the expenses in con-nection with this Action are set forth in the items containedin Vol. X., p. 226, and are not now reprinted.

A writ of distringas and capias, dated 2 June 33 Ed. I,and attested by E. de Brabazoun16 at Westminster, was issuedin the same suit, against some of the same persons, togetherwith Henry Andreu,61 Thomas Oystreman,36 and John sonof Walter de Upmantone.10 An action was also proceedingagainst the men of Faversham, at the suit of the Abbot ofthe Monastery of S. Saviour, Lords of the Manor of Faver-sham, on account of refusal to observe manorial customs andservices. The defeTidants were required to appear and shewcause at Westminster by two of their number. The Baronsof the Cinque Ports thereupon petitioned the King, andpleaded their Charters, which exempted them from pleadingelsewhere than at Shepwey. The Abbot afterwards issued awrit against Thomas de Basinge,19 Thomas de Everinge,66

Eoger Orre,1 Henry Blobbere,27 Wolmer Bealde,18 AlfredDagh,38 John de Selling, Stephen de Molesse,42 and SimonBaldok21 for removing chattels which he had distrained.At length the disputes appear to have been terminated by a

release, dated 13 Dec. 1310, of certain manorial customs inconsideration of £10 annual rent payable to the Abbot andconvent half-yearly.

(4) Gmstaliulariiis. Sir Eobert de Burghersshe was Constable of DoverCastle, and Warden of the Cinque Ports, 29, 30, 31, 33, and 34 Ed. 1. He isdescribed in one of the Faversham Eecords as Lieutenant of Sir Step, dePencester, Constable and Warden in 25 Ed. I. He summoned Jeffery Bocton,Abbot of Faversham, to appear at Shipwcy and answer for trespasses com-mitted. As the Abbot declined to attend, he was arrested and sent to DoverCastle. The Archbishop thereupon cited the Warden in his ecclesiastical court,and on Sir Eobert refusing to plead he was condemned. The King, however,compelled the Archbishop to reverse his sentence. Bartholomew, son of SirEobert, lived at Plumstead. He was knighted, at the taking of Caerlaverock in1300, and was Warden of. the Ports in the 1st, 23rd, and 28th of Ed. III.Another Eobert de Burghersshe appears to have succeeded Edmund of Wood-stock as Warden, 4 Ed. III. Sir Robert de Jiendale is named in the Favershamtallage arrears as Warden and Constable, 18 Ed. II. Sir Nwhol-as do Oriolwas Constable, 16 Ed. II. In 19 Ed. II. he was appointed Admiral from theThames westward, with orders to prevent all suspected persons from sailingout of the kingdom. While the Queen was preparing to land, the fleet sailedto the westward and took 170 sail from the French, and brought them safe intoharbour, (Furley's Weald of Kent, ii., pt. 1, p. 227 ; Hist. M8S. He also held Downe Court in Lenliam, as half aknight's foe ; as did Lawrence heir of Eobert de la Downe, 20 Ed. III. .JohnDowne lived there, and died possessed 0 Ed. IV. and left issue, by his wifeIsabella, two sons, John and Thomas. Thomas and Gilbert ate Dune wereJurors on an inquest as to lands of Robert de Sovantz, 33 Hen. III. Eobert ateDoune held half a knight's fee in Lenham, 38 Hen. III. John ate Doune wasMember of Parliament for Seaforsl, 19 Ed. II. Downe Court Hanoi- in Downeparish belonged, in the reigns of Ed. I. and II., to Eichd de Downe, who, withhis wife Margery, was buried in the chancel of Downe Church. The familywas extinct there before the middle of Edward III.'s reign. In 20 Ed. II., and died in that year, leaving Margaret his widow, only daughter andheiress of Sir Thomas de Normanville. Through her he became entitled to theManor of Kennardington and a large inheritance in Rutlandshire. He wasdescended from Solomon de Basinge, Sheriff of London, in the last year ofKing John, and from Adam de Basinge, Lord Mayor of London, 36 Hen. III.,on the site of whose house Blackwell Hall was afterwards built, and from whomthe adjoining street and Ward were called Basinghall Street and Basing Ward.Several Basings were afterwards Sheriffs of London. Sir Thos, son of Sir Wil-liam and Margaret, died 23 Ed. III. He left a son, John, then eight years old,who was afterwards knighted, and died 7 Rich. II., leaving a son, Thomas,who died without issue. Sir John de Basing, his uncle, succeeded to his in-heritance, and died, 24 Hen. VI., without issue. Alice Marwortb, his sister,then became entitled. (Hasted's Hist. James Dryland was of Davington; he possessedRoyton manor in Lenham in the reign of Hen. VI. His daughter and soleheiress, Constance, married, 1st, Sir Thomas Walsingham, 2ndly, John Grene,Esq. By her first marriage, she had three sons and one daughter. She died in1476. The remains of the buildings, facing theLondon road or Watling street, are separated by a mill stream. A modernwater-mill marks the site of one evidently standing there in the reign of Ed. I.

(65) De Ett'ringc. Thomas was defendant in an action at the suit of theAbbot of Faversham for removing distrained chattels, 33 Ed. I. In 38 Hen,III., the heirs of Henry de Everinge held one Knight's fee in Everinge, of thebarony do Albrincis, in Folkestone Hundred. (Arch. Cant,, XII., p. 216.)

(06) De Selling. In 8 John, Simon, son of Nicholas, acknowledged to hisbrother Ealph lands in Faveraham and Selling. In 38 Ed. I., John was defend-ant, at suit of the Abbot of Faversham, for removing distrained chattels. In 3Ed. II., John, son of John, and Ralph and Richard, his brothers, were plaintiffsin a fine of a messuage, land, and rents in Selling, Hheldwich, and Badlcsmere ;and in 0 Ed. II., John was defendant in a fine of a messuage and land inHcJJing. (Arch, Cunt., IV., p, 308 ; XL, pp. 331, 360.)

(67) Kynyi'siwUi'. A mill and manor belonging to the Abbey of Faversham.The manor formerly extended over several houses in West Street, East Street,and Abbey Street. The mill was in Tanner Street, over a stream, and in thereign of Henry VI. the Abbot held his prison there.

(68) Li; Nm-thuren. Gilbert is named in Compotus 33 Ed. I. In 31 Ed. 1.he was sued at Faversham by Matthew le Wcllse, butcher, for five pigs, whichthe wife of Gilbert had sold him for ten shillings ; and he was also suedby "Walter Bealile, for !>a. 6d., which he hsd kept back from him for twoyears.

(09) DC Chain. John do Campania, of the neighbouring parish of Newn-ham, with other nobles, was summoned to the Coronation of Bd. II. John deChaumpaigne was M.P. for Oxford City 8 and 9 JBd. II,, and for Southamptoncounty 10 and 12 Ed. II.

(70) Vicar' de Paversham. Robert de Honiton was appointed Vicar in1305, and was succeeded by Kichard Wokesbrigg.
