SYNOPSIS (THIS OUTLINES THE FLOW OF THE PARTY EVENTS)

The Oceanside Palace Hotel of Maui was hosting their nightly luau on Sunset Beach. Exciting Polynesian spirit filled the air as the guests were greeted and presented with festive Hawaiian leis. Everybody mingled while enjoying delicious appetizers and quizzed each other on fun Hawaiian trivia. The hosts kicked off the celebration with awesome challenges such as ‘What Summer Thing am I,’ P.G.A. (Poolside Golf Association) Tournament, Super Saturated Sweatshirt Relay and Ping Pong Madness. During the games, it became apparent that some of the guests didn’t get along too well and that some were hiding pretty big secrets. The hotel staff got the party back on track with a delicious Hawaiian dinner while the guests worked in teams on the Totally Sunny Movie Challenge. With stuffed bellies, the luau participants mingled and to everyone’s horror, a dead body was discovered! There was a killer among them that needed to be caught immediately before they got away! The guests rallied together and underwent a thorough investigation including a Fiber Analysis provided by the local police department. Only taking short breaks to relieve the stress of the investigation, they engaged in exciting games such as Top Chef Poolside Guacamole, Shove a Duck, Treacherous Sharks and Swashbucklin' Pirates and the Tourist Vs. Natives Relay. Once everyone had their final guess of whodunit, they took turns accusing each other. Everyone came clean with their involvement in the crime, if they even had any. Everyone was shocked when the murderer – seeing no other alternative – confessed! After a brave escape attempt by the killer, the party guests enjoyed a delectable dessert and reflected on the evening’s exciting events! It was definitely a luau that the guests will remember forever!

LIST OF CHARACTERS CHARACTER NAME AND

OCCUPATION CHARACTER DESCRIPTION COSTUME

SUGGESTIONS

PONI MULOKELI Hula Dancer /

Hawaiian Native

REQUIRED Female

Poni Mulokeli is the hard working performer for the Oceanside Palace Hotel Luaus on Sunset Beach. She’s an obnoxious one-upper who’s not the most popular employee among the staff of the hotel! Therefore, an extended chat with this feisty entertainer is definitely worth avoiding if you know what is good for you.

Hawaiian top and

grass skirt. Flower (real or silk) in hair. Long, black wig is an optional prop. Leis are optional

accessories.

ROBBIE PATTENSON

Hollywood Actor / Tourist

REQUIRED

Male

Robbie Pattenson is the hottest Hollywood hunk right now and is currently vacationing - in total disguise - for a month in Hawaii with his co-star Kirstin Steward. They’re relaxing in between films - hidden far from the paparazzi. But Robbie’s narcissism and arrogant attitude are a little much for the laid back staff of the Oceanside Palace Hotel. Too bad they have no idea he’s the biggest star in Hollywood!

Casual yet trendy beach attire.

Sunglasses as an optional prop.

KIRSTIN STEWARD

Hollywood Actress/ Tourist

REQUIRED Female

Kirstin Steward is known as one of Hollywood’s nicest young stars. At least that’s the side to Kirstin that Hollywood’s seen! On a more personal level, away from the glitz and glam, this spoiled diva lets it loose with angry tirades if she doesn’t get her way. She is finding that people don’t cater to her as much when she is in disguise as an average Jane and she doesn’t like it much!

Casual yet trendy beach attire.

Sunglasses as an optional prop.

TIKI HUTMAN Beach Lifeguard/ Hawaiian Native

REQUIRED Male

Tiki Hutman was born in Southern California but moved to Maui when he was only eight years old. He grew up on the Maui beaches and is the head lifeguard at the Oceanside Palace Hotel’s Sunset Beach. Tiki is known for his innovative dance moves and outgoing personality and is the one to get a party started! But hopefully not when he is on duty! The locals are starting to worry that Tiki might be losing his edge as a lifeguard.

Beach attire with optional whistle.

LOVEY POWELL Heiress/ Tourist

REQUIRED Female

Lovey Powell is the billionaire heiress that spends her pampered life vacationing in exotic locations. One of her many mansions around the world is located on the beautiful island of Maui and she refers to it as her ‘home base.’ Lovey often stays at the resorts on the beach to flaunt her money and considers everyone to be subservient to her. Bossy is her middle name!

Very expensive looking beach

attire with money (fake) bags and

money coming out of every pocket. Large costume

jewelry.

JACK MARROW Deep Sea Fisherman/

Resident Tourist

REQUIRED Male

Jack Marrow is quite the odd character. Originally hailing from the bayous of southern Louisiana, Jack is currently traveling the world in search of the best deep sea fishing. He recently had to take a job hosting deep sea fishing excursions as he ran out of cash during his month-long scheduled vacation and couldn’t make it home to the mainland. Jack is infamous for his pirate impersonations and prefers to be called Captain Jack Marrow.

Fisherman attire. Optional pirate

costume / props. Optional rubber fish as props.

COCO BEACHES College Student /

Tourist

Optional Female

Coco Beaches is the seemingly naive college student from the University of Northern Texas. She won her trip to Hawaii as part of a Hawaiian trivia challenge on a local radio station; LOVE FM. Coco appears to be void of all common sense but claims to have earned a 4.0 GPA thus far in her pursuit of a biochemistry degree. No matter what her academic status really is – she’s all about having fun.

Trendy and young beach attire.

ANO HALOA Waiter / Hawaiian

Native

Optional Male

Ano Haloa is the nosy waiter at the Oceanside Palace Hotel. He might not seem like he is paying attention to the conversation at your table while he’s serving you, but quite the contrary! This meddlesome maître d' keeps a journal and knows every detail about every guest at the hotel! Be careful what you say around Ano as rumor has it that he’s just waiting for the day he gets some gossip he can do something with!

Waiter uniform or black shirt / pants with a half apron

(bartender’s apron).

HOLI MULOKELI Greeter / Hawaiian

Native

Optional Female

Holi Mulokeli is the overly-excited greeter and lei presenter at the Oceanside Palace Hotel. The native Hawaiians avoid her cheery greeting but the tourists… well, they better be ready for a surprise when they arrive to the hotel! Holi is bursting with energy and hospitality and takes her job very seriously. Her enthusiasm has been known to make children cry and animals flee the scene!

Hawaiian top and

grass skirt. Flower (real or silk) in hair. Long, black wig is an optional prop. Leis are highly

suggested accessories.

SOL BOATMAN Donut Artist / Tourist

Optional Male

Sol Boatman recently won a lawsuit against a large fast food chain for burning his lip on an overly-heated hamburger. He’s using his winnings to set out on a tour of the world – starting with Maui! Sol is a recently retired donut artist and is definitely enjoying the break from the sugary confections.

Nerdy beach attire.

The game is organized into three rounds. This is only a suggestion on how to play the mystery, you as the host can elect to do in any way that you wish. The game rounds are designed as follows: OPTIONAL PRE-GAME: these pre-game starters and task sheets are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game starters are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These starters are not vital to solving the mystery. In this game, there are also pre-game tasks for the characters to perform. These pre-game tasks are optional and the omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way. You will need to fill in your guests’ contact information (email is typically the best method of contact) on the pre-game task sheets for each guest to be able to contact the characters listed on each of their task sheets (see below).

APPETIZER HOUR – ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive.

DINNER HOUR – ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner to your guests. (Dinner is optional.)

DESSERT ‘N THE BIG REVEAL – ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with coffee/cocoa and dessert. For further questions, check out our FAQ web page at www.mymysteryparty.com/frasqu.html If your question is not listed in our FAQ, contact us at the email addresses below. Mystery Questions: mailto:[email protected] Web based Questions: [email protected]

OPTIONAL PRE-GAME ROUND

DIRECTIONS FOR THE HOST: Before the party, encourage your guests to view this mystery on the www.mymysteryparty.com website or use the free My Mystery Party invitations (located on the item page on the mymysteryparty.com website at the bottom of the page – scroll to the bottom and click on the link that says ‘free, printable invitation’ to download) as they have the character list included. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party.

In addition to the optional pre-game tickets, there are also optional ‘pre-game tasks’ included in this game (page 15). These ‘pre-game tasks’ include instructions to contact other party guests with random clues to build pre-game excitement. The exclusion of these ‘pre-game tasks’ in no way will affect the mystery. However, it

Page 5: MURDER IN MAUI A LUAU TO DIE FOR 6-10+ Guest Electronic …ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/yhst-43578580121885/LUAUsample.pdf · 2015-11-04 · COSTUME SUGGESTIONS PONI MULOKELI Hula Dancer

will lead to extra pre-game enthusiasm! You can send the ‘pre-game tasks’ with the pre-game tickets in any method you choose from the options above.

ROUND ONE - IT’S PARTY TIME! DIRECTIONS FOR THE HOST: Round one – cocktail hour begins as the guests arrive. Create a Luau ambiance with a Jimmy Buffet mix, reggae mix or a steel drum band mix CD playing softly, Luau décor and any movie (on mute) about the beach / Hawaii (i.e. Lilo & Stitch, Gidget Goes Hawaiian, Point break, Blue Crush, etc.) if there is a television in the party room.

PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready.

The clue cards for Round One (page 19+) in sealed, labeled envelopes for each character. If the optional games are played (page 54+) – view the bonus game instructions to determine any

materials you will need. If the money challenge is played (which is highly suggested), 4 My Mystery Party Bills should be placed

in each character’s clue card envelope (page 60+). The guests are to use these bills to bargain with each other to give information – or whatever they need to use them for during the game. The winner of the money challenge is the one who has the most money at the conclusion of the game at the time the murderer confesses. In case of a tie, do a rock, paper scissor tournament with the best 2 out of 3 being the winner.

ROUND TWO – DINNER HOUR DIRECTIONS FOR THE HOST: In the nearest bathroom, place the following items under the sink - the victim sign, scotch tape, host supplied white non-toxic face makeup (optional but funny and suggested), the cut out murder weapon (page 32), and if you have purchased the victim t-shirt and / or crime scene tape. If there is

Page 6: MURDER IN MAUI A LUAU TO DIE FOR 6-10+ Guest Electronic …ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/yhst-43578580121885/LUAUsample.pdf · 2015-11-04 · COSTUME SUGGESTIONS PONI MULOKELI Hula Dancer

not a cabinet under the sink, place these items in any location that can be concealed within that bathroom. The murder victim will be instructed in their round two clue card to look for it if there is not a cabinet under the sink. The murder victim will be instructed in their round two clue card to put the white face makeup on their face, put on the victim sign by adhering it to their chest with Scotch tape, to adhere the murder weapon with scotch tape in a designated location, and if the optional victim t-shirt is available- to put that on (with the victim sign on top) and if the crime scene tape is there - to decorate themselves with it. It is hilarious when a fully decorated victim walks back into the party room!

Once the victim returns and the laughter dies down, read the sign on his/her chest to the group. Pair the guests into investigative teams - but different combinations than the movie challenge. (Pairing of guests is optional, but it adds a layer of collaboration to the mystery as not all guests are given the same clues or may have collected the same clues.) Encourage the paired teams to implement their 'post-murder reveal clues' and share truthful information and opinions that they have gathered. This part of the investigation should take about 15 minutes. Put the fiber analysis results in a sealed envelope. Reveal it towards the end of this round by explaining that Poni Mulokeli called in a favor from her friend Detective Hulaheynekali Anolakamali from the Maui P.D. Say that he was glad to do it and that he won’t notify his superiors at the police department of his findings so that the group can solve the crime before the rest of the forensics team arrives. At the conclusion of this round, give the guests a time period in which to fill in their final guesses as to whodunit on the 'Murder Mystery Investigation Sheet'. Collect the guess sheets from your guests at the conclusion of this round.

HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY: GUEST INSTRUCTIONS

So you’ve been assigned a character and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most fabulous Luau attire and have been told to play your role. So now what? The mystery is separated into 3 rounds. During the party, you will be handed an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues for all of the required characters provide everything that you need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to be able to get the whole picture of what has happened.

From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are playing a ‘one-upping hula dancer,’ then that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host has cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. There are some characters that are designed to be played more reserved than other characters that should be played more boisterous. Feel free to play your role however you feel comfortable. Embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other characters to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information.

Guest that will be playing the character:

Input the guests’ contact information in the text fields below (preferred contact method is email) and this

information will populate throughout the pre-game task cards so your guests can contact each other prior to the game to build pre-game excitement! You can also write in the information by hand if you prefer. This is optional.

Poni Mulokeli

Robbie Pattenson

Kirstin Steward

Tiki Hutman

Lovey Powell

Jack Marrow

Coco Beaches

Ano Haloa

Holi Mulokeli

Sol Boatman

OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS:

The following tasks are completely optional and exclusion of them does not alter the mystery in any way. However, it does lead to pre-game build up and excitement! Cut the task strips out and slip them into the pre-

game clue envelopes (with the above pre-game tickets) and send about 1 week prior to the party. Be sure to fill in your guests’ preferred contact information on the task slips (you can do this by inputting their information in

the text fields above) so they will be able to contact each other. The usual method of contact is via email.

CHARACTER- Poni Mulokeli OPTIONAL- for some pre-party fun, you can contact (email, phone, etc.) the following guests in the week leading up to the party:

Contact the guest playing Robbie Pattenson (but address him as Harry Spotter as he’s in disguise and you don’t know who he is yet –you think he’s an amateur tennis player) and say that you can’t believe he’s been in Maui for 3 weeks already and hasn’t attended the hotel’s luau – the Oceanside Palace Hotel Luau on Sunset Beach. You’re glad that he got tickets and he should know that you are the star performer, but no need for him to ask you for an autograph, you’ll have a signed picture waiting for him in the hotel lobby when he checks out next week! Maybe he’ll make it as a tennis pro one day and will get to see what fame is like! (Contact info :___________________________________________) Contact the guest playing Sol Boatman and tell him that you see he finally talked the Concierge into giving him tickets to the hotel’s luau - the Oceanside Palace Hotel Luau on Sunset Beach. Sol must have really been persistent since you’ve never seen the hotel management give away luau tickets before – they’re expensive! He must really know how to ‘work the system.’ (Contact info :_____________________________________________________)

Please note: either contacting the guests above or deciding to skip these tasks will not alter the mystery or anyone's ability to solve the mystery in anyway. However, contacting other guests will lead to excitement about the party and will encourage other guests to read about the other characters and be prepared for some completely mysterious fun!

ROUND ONE CLUES: CUT OUT, SLIP INTO ENVELOPES AND LABEL WITH THE APPROPRIATE ROUND AND CHARACTER

COCO BEACHES– ROUND ONE USE THE FOLLOWING SUNSHINE’Y TRIVIA QUESTIONS AS AN ICE BREAKER

Question: What state has the highest population density in the U.S.? Answer: Hawaii, of course! Question: Historically in Hawaii, if poi was present at the dinner table, what did this signify? Answer: that the spirit of Hāloa, the ancestor of Hawaiin people, was present and all conflict should be stopped

CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND During this round, mingle with other guests to discuss the following information with whomever you choose: Remember that you’re a seemingly naïve college student from the University of Northern Texas. You won this trip by

participating in a Hawaiian trivia contest on Love FM – a local radio station. You don’t have a lot of common sense but make up for it in book smarts as you’ve got a 4.0 GPA and you’re a biochemistry major.

Talk to Poni Mulokeli about how Jack Marrow promised you that if you paid the fee for a deep sea fishing excursion trip that costs $200.00, he would catch ‘big game fish,’ sell them and split the money with you. He went on this trip and said he had hard luck and didn’t catch anything. But if he is a professional fisherman and works for a tour company that hosts deep sea excursions here in Maui, shouldn’t he have caught ‘something?’ You feel foolish!

Talk to Lovey Powell about how she got all of that money. There must be a story behind it. Ask Robbie Pattenson (refer to him as Harry Spotter as he is in disguise as an amateur tennis player) what he

does for a living. Say that he looks vaguely familiar. PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL

You were completely humiliated by Jack Marrow. You met him the other night at the Lime & Coconut Dance Club and he made a deal with you but you feel like he tricked you out of your money. You don’t think he had any intention of catching those fish and splitting the money with you and you doubt he even went on the trip. You think he pocketed your money. Now, you don’t have enough money to make it for the rest of your trip as you are a college student on a very tight budget.

During the mystery, your character must be honest and not make up any potentially mystery-altering clues in addition to those provided to you. You do not, however, have to share the clues that you collect with other guests.

ROUND TWO CLUES CUT OUT, STUFF INTO LABELED ENVELOPES WITH THE APPROPRIATE CHARACTER AND ROUND. TO BEGIN ROUND TWO, PASS OUT

THESE ENVELOPES TO THE GUESTS.

ANO HALOA -ROUND TWO

PRE MURDER CLUES TO REVEAL & TASKS TO PERFORM: Jack hasn’t tipped you all night. Tell everyone that Jack Marrow is a con artist and shouldn’t be trusted. You

know everything about everyone at the hotel so they should just trust you. And, the man refuses to leave you a tip so he needs to just die.

Tell Kirstin and Robbie that the paparazzi ‘are a coming.’ Tell Poni Mulokeli that the upper management of the hotel is looking for a way to fire her – just FYI. Ask Lovey Powell why she is estranged with her famous niece. Say that she’ll have plenty of opportunities to

explain her side to the paparazzi when they arrive at the hotel…very soon! You called them about 8 hours ago and they should arrive soon.

POST MURDER: You probably did touch the murder weapon or a few just like it as you helped set up the luau this evening. It’s your

job; it can’t be avoided, unfortunately.

You saw the victim leave the luau area about 5-6 minutes prior to the time the body was discovered by Lovey Powell. If Lovey Powell is not an honest person, why should you believe that she simply ‘discovered’ the body? How do you

know she is not the murderer? Robbie and Kirstin left the luau at the same time earlier. Kirstin returned first and Robbie was definitely gone for

about 3-4 minutes total.

SOLUTION ROUND THREE Cut out the solution cards, slip into envelopes that are labeled with the appropriate round and character. Pass out the envelopes to the guests to commence the final round after the guests have made their accusations of whodunit.

ANO HALOA - FINAL SOLUTION ROUND THREE – READ WHEN YOU ARE TOLD IT IS YOUR TURN This is the final solution round. Every guest at this party will now tell their story to the group - in a specific order dictated by

this final solution clue card - and the murderer will now confess. Before you read your solution to the group, read the following movie quote and see who can guess the movie the fastest!

“Anybody can lose one fight, anybody can lose once, you’ll come back from this and you’ll be

champion of the world.”

Answer: Million Dollar Baby- and the quote was said by Eddie Scrap-Iron Durpris

Say the following to the group: “Jack doesn’t leave tips for the hard-working wait staff. His days were numbered on this Earth because of that, but I didn’t do it. However, the media - local news and even some trash tabloid reporters all the way from New York and Los Angeles

- will be arriving shortly. I’ve called and notified them that Robbie Pattenson and Kirstin Steward from the Dusk and Full Moon movies are here at our resort AND that they are suspects in a murder case! Wow! Get ready for some

paparazzzzzzzzzzziiiiiiiiiiiiii! And I’ll get full credit in the press for being the one to notify the media of where they are! I’ve already had 4 phone interviews about it in Dallas, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. We better hurry this up because

I’m supposed to be interviewed by a Philadelphia news reporter via a conference call in 10 minutes.”

THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS ARE TO READ THEIR SOLUTIONS TO THE GROUP IN THIS ORDER. IF ANY OF THE CHARACTERS ARE NOT AT THE PARTY, SKIP THEM AND GO TO THE NEXT IN LINE.

HOLI MULOKELI – SOL BOATMAN - JACK MARROW
