Instructions to the Host:

1. This murder mystery needs every guest to be in attendance, so plan ahead. I suggest invitations go out early, so guests can prepare their costumes (This murder mystery does not include costume suggestions, but you are welcome to be as creative as you want with them or not use them at all).

2. This murder mystery was specially created to not offend anyone, especially married couples. So, to not make couples flirt with others than their own spouse or date, please pair the couples as follows:

a. Bryce Stratton and Marilyn Mooreb. Zachary Judd and Tiana Quinnc. Dimitra Franek and Hans Franekd. Richard Moore and Sheri Mooree. Fred Majors and Zyra Byrne

3. The invitation is included at the end of the murder mystery. Each invitation should include a character synopsis for their character. Guests do not need information about other guests.

4. Make sure to insert your address and information on the invitation!

5. I believe this murder mystery will go more smoothly if you have first read through it so you know when to use the clues.

6. Prepare the clue handwritten and hide it somewhere in the room (The clue is found at the end of the murder mystery).

7. Print out enough copies of the Newspaper the Miami Angle (separate attachment) and place them in the room for people to read.

8. You may want to set aside a “captain” costume for the murder victim, since she comes back as the ship captain.

9. Print the Solution Document and Confession. Staple them together and give them to the murder victim when she comes back as Loren, the ship captain.

10. Each person receives a “booklet” the night of the murder mystery. Print out enough booklets for each guest, including one page of rules and the cruise information (both on next page) at the beginning of each booklet.

11. Use a paper cutter to slice each page in half, but BE CAREFUL not to get pages out of order as you do this. If needed, go back to your computer as you are stapling the pages together to make sure they are in the same order as on the computer.

12. Name tags will help the game along.

13. You may want to make “awards” for the best costume and best actor/actress and have the guests vote.

14. At the beginning of the murder mystery, welcome everyone on this private final voyage of Phantom of the Seas.

15. You, the host, are in charge of announcing when it is time to turn the pages in the booklets. Make sure all the clues for that round have been given before instructing guests to move on. You can usually gauge this by the lull in conversations. Or, you can always ask if everyone is ready to move on. They will tell you.

16. During the murder mystery round 2, once you believe all information has been divulged and conversations are dying down, watch for Marilyn to say to Hans, “Sorry I messed things over for your trip to find that treasure ship. How are you going to afford the trip now that my parents have pulled out?” Once she has said this and walked away, turn out the lights until she screams and falls to the ground. Then turn them back on. This will ensure that everyone is still a suspect.

RULES

1. You CANNOT lie unless your “script” indicates.

2. Do not move forward to the next round until told by the director (usually your host) that evening.

3. Make sure everything in your script (apart from character breakdown) is revealed in your conversations, or else you are concealing evidence.

4. Keep your eyes open, as there may be clues to find.

5. At the end, you should make a guess at who is the murderer. In this game, you are also a suspect… you may actually be the murderer!

6. Try not to talk over one another, listen to everything, even if people appear to be talking to themselves, or are in a private conversation.

Everything is vital evidence.

7. Do not share your “script” with others playing the game – it removes an element of mystery and suspense.

Bryce Stratton………………..

Bryce was recently on the Miami Bachelor, a local cable television show, but came up empty-handed, despite all the girls fawning over him. He is handsome and rich; a perfect catch. Yet he is infatuated with Marilyn Moore and believes that if he keeps up his pursuit she will eventually fall for him. He tries hard to win her attention, but she barely notices him. Marilyn’s parents invited him on this cruise because they want him to win over Marilyn.

Make sure your costume has a pill bottle with some candy (pills) in it.

Secrets:

You suffer from severe depression and take medication for your condition.

Round 1:

Only Marilyn knows about your medication; you try to guilt her into loving you. You say you NEED her.

Follow Marilyn around and offer her your jacket or fill her drinks. Ask her to join you for a date sometime.

Tell the Franeks you think they are using the Moores for their money. Ask the Franeks just how much they have conned – ahem, received - from the Moores.

Tell Marilyn that Fred is no good for her. He doesn’t love her or appreciate how amazing she is.

Round 2:

Ask Zyra if she has cast any spells lately. You would like her to cast a “love charm” to make Marilyn fall in love with you.

Ask Tiana for advice on winning Marilyn over. She must know some tricks or good lines… after all, Tiana is an actress.

When a body is found you have a hard time. You find out it’s Marilyn and lose control - accuse nearly everyone on the ship.

After accusing, pop some pills.

Round 3:

When someone quotes you to have said you couldn’t let anyone else have her, defend yourself by saying you loved her deeply and would never do anything so sadistic.

You claim that Zachary was mad at Fred for not paying back the money he owed him. You think he wanted to send Fred a message of what he was capable of, so he killed Marilyn. Accuse Zachary of murdering Marilyn, your one true love.

Marilyn Moore…………….

Marilyn is the beautiful daughter of Richard and Sheri Moore. She has recently learned to spread her wings and explore the world around her. She has long been protected within the mansion walls, but now in her mid-twenties she has finally become free - a bit too free. Marilyn always gets what she wants and loves to play with people’s emotions.

Secrets:

Fred Majors is your current fling. You know he is a bad influence, but you are having so much fun, you really don’t care. You had no idea that life could be so much fun.

In recent months you have found your parents, especially your father, to have a very short temper. You still love your parents, but insist it is your life. They just don’t understand.

You went to rehab for a few months last year, but hated it and quit half-way through.

Round 1:

Ignore Bryce as he tries to flirt with you. He won’t leave you alone. He gives you the creeps…so you avoid him, and yet you still like seeing him try so hard.

If your father yells at you, tell him to back off. You insist that he does not care about you and is too self-absorbed trying to bolster his political campaign.

After Zyra announces something about the house being “haunted”, “cursed”, etc., accuse her of evil witchcraft.

Round 2:

Make fun of Bryce by mentioning that he is so obsessed with you that he is on medication. He is “lovesick”.

Make fun of Tiana and how she stinks as an actress. After all, everyone knows it! Tell her that you did her a favor by ruining her career.

Just before you excuse yourself to the restroom, break up with Fred Majors, accusing him of using you for your money. Make a scene of it.

At the end of this round excuse yourself to the restroom. On the way you stop briefly by Hans and say loudly, “Sorry I messed things over for your trip to find that treasure ship. How are you going to afford the trip now that my parents have pulled out?” You then walk away and laugh at the enraged look on his face.

On the way back from the restroom you are MURDERED. (When the lights go out you will scream and fall to the floor - no one will actually touch you except for when your body is moved to another room. This will be done safely.)

Round 3:

You will return to the party disguised as another guest and can enjoy the rest of the game – either as yourself or another character you create.

Lauren Asner……………….

Lauren is the coroner/head detective of the local police department – it’s a small town.She is very serious about her job and is known to be strictly by the book.

Secrets:

You have been wary of Zyra Byrne for some time and have of late observed her in the mortuary lab testing her “potions”.

You followed Zyra to this party and disguised yourself as another party guest. You know the Moores through Richard’s work with the city and have talked to them about your suspicions. They have welcomed you to come and keep a watchful eye.

Rounds 1 and 2:

Try to avoid Zyra, as she may recognize you. Otherwise, you are simply another party guest – allow yourself to make pleasant conversation.

When someone is murdered, be prepared to remove your disguise.

Round 3:

You help move the “dead” body and hang back for a moment to remove your disguise and solve the mystery. You then arrive on the scene as Lauren.

Once you arrive as Lauren, introduce yourself as coroner and head detective. Explain that you have confirmed that Marilyn was poisoned

sometime in the last hour, meaning that the murderer is still in the building – probably in this room. Say that the chemicals in Marilyn’s body are toxic and can cause illness in the other guests if the mystery is not solved quickly. No one can leave the party until the murderer has been found out and the body has been removed safely. Tell them that police are surrounding the area and are ready to move forward at your command.

You question the group as to their whereabouts, what they saw, and what they know.

Take notes and follow any leads that you come across.

At the end of the evening you will make the final announcement and reveal the murderer by reading the solution document.

Zachary Judd…………………….

Zachary works at the local pharmacy while trying to work on his band. He is very talented, but has trouble staying focused. He has just returned from a three month trip to Europe. He was Marilyn’s first boyfriend…but that was a long time ago. He remained good friends with the Moores after his breakup with Marilyn.

Secrets:

You have now been dating Tiana Quinn for a few weeks, but you have never gotten over Marilyn. You invited Tiana to this party to try and make Marilyn jealous.

Marilyn was the love of your life, and you were crushed when she left you.

That three month “trip to Europe” was actually three months of therapy to help you get over Marilyn.

Round 1:

Warn Bryce that an obsession such as his can only end in heartbreak. After all, you should know…

Tell everyone that Marilyn looks beautiful, but then hastily add that you are finally over her and have a new girlfriend, Tiana.

Ask Richard Moore how his campaign is going and offer your support.

Ask Hans Franek how things are back home in Europe.

Round 2:

Flirt with Tiana very obviously in front of Marilyn.

Find out why Tiana hates Marilyn.

Someone is on the ship who was not invited. Find out whom.

Fred owes you $15,000 from a high stakes poker game. Question very loudly when you will get your money (make sure to say $15,000).

When things get stressful, you tune everything out and shy away from people as a way of coping.

Round 3:

When someone accuses you, admit that you deeply loved Marilyn and that you would never have done anything to hurt her (then cast a mean look at Bryce).

You accuse Bryce of murdering Marilyn, because his sick love obsession had gone too far. If he couldn’t have her, he thought no one should have her.

Tiana Quinn……………………..

Tiana is an aspiring young actress. She has had several small acting roles and most recently was Maria in The Sound of Music. She was humiliated during her last performance and hasn’t acted since.

Secrets:

Marilyn Moore stood up in the middle of your last performance and shouted, “YOU STINK!!” The whole crowd laughed and you just couldn’t stand it – you ran off the stage crying.

You have been dating Zachary Judd for just a few weeks. When he asked you to come to this party, you were unsure. But somehow you couldn’t say no, knowing that mean Marilyn Moore would be here.

You suspect that Zachary still has a thing for Marilyn, and get upset when he looks her way.

Round 1:

Since your last performance you have a deep and abiding hate for Marilyn and think that she is a spoiled rich kid who doesn’t care for anyone else. You do not understand why Zachary would be so hung up on her.

Ask the Franeks how they know the Moores.

Tell Zyra you’re intrigued by her prediction. Try to find out who will die.

Round 2:

Ask the Franeks about their treasure hunting. It sounds so exciting, but how do they afford all of the expensive equipment?

When Marilyn insults your acting, yell at her and blame her for ruining your career.

Get mad at Bryce when he brings up your foiled acting career.

Tell Richard he has a fat chance of getting elected with Marilyn as his daughter.

Round 3:

Hans and his wife, Dimitra Franek, are Treasure Hunters. They deep-sea dive looking for old ships that carry buried treasure. He and his wife have been great friends of the Moores for many years. They met the Moores on a Caribbean cruise several years ago. They come once a year for a month-long visit.

Secrets:

You and your wife have gotten a little greedy in the past, and both went to jail for two years for embezzling large sums of money.

You and your wife have a great new plan to make a lot of money. You have found a map showing where the famed sunken Dutch treasure ship Verelst lies. But you need some expensive equipment for the job, since the ship lies 1000 feet below the surface. The Moores have agreed to invest $5 million in your company. This will fund the expedition that begins next week.

Round 1:

If anyone asks you how you know the Moores, you tell them about the cruise but are scarce on the details after that.

If anyone asks you about Europe, brag about how you can get anything there on the black market for really cheap.

Go ahead and brag about your treasure hunting. It makes for great conversation!

You are kind to the Moores, but you can’t stand their daughter Marilyn. You think she is a spoiled brat. Ask her how it feels to be a rehab drop-out.

Round 2:

Do your best to avoid Tiana Quinn - she seems to inquire too much.

Find out as much as you can about Zyra, and why she does not like the Moores.

How dare Richard pull out now? You’ve already signed all the paperwork, you’ve hired the crew, and leased the equipment! He can’t do this to you! Threaten him: he won’t get away with this. If he pulls out, you will make his life miserable.

When Marilyn approaches you and says something about the money, you grow furious and blame all this on her and her crazy lifestyle.

Round 3:

You feel concern that your wife may have done something to Marilyn after overhearing your conversation with her, but you are afraid to ask her.

You blame Zyra for the murder of Marilyn. Zyra was the one who was predicting murder tonight, and she obviously does not like the Moores. She is still angry over her broken up engagement all those years ago to Richard Moore. She murdered Marilyn to seek revenge!

Dimitra Franek…………...

Dimitra and her husband, Hans Franek, are Treasure Hunters. They deep-sea dive looking for old ships that carry buried treasure. She and her husband have been great friends of the Moores for many years. Dimitra and Sheri hit it off as great friends the first time they met.

Secrets:

You and your husband have been a little greedy in the past, and both went to jail for two years for embezzling large sums of money.

People suspect that you are only friends with the Moores for their money. If anyone asks you about their investment in your treasure hunting, try and skirt around ‘number talk.’

Round 2:

Do your best to avoid Tiana Quinn - she seems to be inquiring too much. You do not like to share much information about your treasure hunting, because there are always people trying to find out where you’re going so they can beat you to the treasure.

Turn the tables on Tiana and ask her why she doesn’t act anymore.

Ask Marilyn how long she has been dating Fred. Explain that you just saw him the other night at a night club, and it didn’t look like he had a girlfriend at home.

Once the Moores announce they will not fund your expedition, you become very angry. After all these years of friendship, this is how they repay you?!

You get nervous once your husband makes threats to the Moores. He is not one to make an empty threat. You want to talk to him and calm him down.

Once you hear a scream you fear it is too late for discussions.

Round 3:

Ask Hans (your husband) why he would make such a threat.

You are worried, but defend your husband; you know your husband is not a murderer and that he is incapable of harming anyone. You hope this death is unrelated to the treasure hunting.

You accuse Tiana of murdering Marilyn. After all, it was Marilyn who ruined Tiana’s acting career. Tiana never got over it.

Richard Moore…………………..

Richard inherited a huge fortune from his late grandfather. Money has never been an issue to him. His marriage to Sheri is falling apart. He spends all of his time on his political campaign, as he is currently running for senator.

Secrets:

You and your wife (Sheri) are good friends with the Franeks. You met them a few years ago on a cruise. You have even promised to invest $5 million to fund their latest treasure hunt of an old Dutch ship.

You are very frustrated with Marilyn (your daughter), as her wild lifestyle is hurting your campaign as a family man. You have tried various techniques over the past months to control her, but nothing seems to get through to her.

You have a big ugly romantic history with Zyra.

Round 1:

This huge event you are hosting is a great place to establish your competency as a future senator. Overdo the greetings and introductions (smiling, shaking hands, etc).

Find out why your wife invited Zyra to this party.

Lose your temper with Marilyn about her relationship with Fred. He is no good for your daughter. Accuse her of destroying your political platform as a family man. If she won’t start acting like part of the family, then maybe she shouldn’t be in this family!

Round 2:

Yell at Sheri and tell her to control her daughter.

After Marilyn breaks up with Fred, commend her and tell her she is much too good for that scumbag.

When Zyra brings up the fact you two were once engaged tell her to move on already. Tell her she can’t sit around casting spells all her life over ‘what could have been.’

Break the bad news to the Franeks that you cannot give them the $5 million. The issues you have had with your daughter have hurt your campaign so much that you need every spare dollar you have for damage control. You hope they will understand.

Round 3:

When someone accuses you of threatening Marilyn you deny it, saying that you loved her and claiming that you were only harsh with her for her own good.

Accuse Fred of killing Marilyn since she just broke up with him tonight. He was using her for her money. He didn’t love her! He threatened her as soon as she broke up with him. You think he is the murderer!

Sheri Moore………………..….

The hostess of this gathering, Sheri is always trying to be the center of attention. She and her husband Richard have been growing apart for years. She is a very classy lady with lots of money and charm.

Secrets:

You feel as though Richard doesn’t care about you or your only child, Marilyn. You love him, but he only seems to care about his political standing. You merely stick around for the security.

Round 1:

Welcome every one to the party and wish all a good time.

You are sick and tired of the way Richard treats you and your daughter, and you are not afraid to say it out loud.

Find out why Richard would invite Zyra to this party. He has a huge history with her, and inviting her was inappropriate - not to mention a bad move for his career. (He is running for senator.)

Round 2:

Defend Marilyn when Richard gets mad at her.

When Dimitra and Hans get mad about the money, accuse them of using you just to fund their treasure hunting.

Ask Dimitra why they visit your home each year. Do not accept the answer that they were invited; dig deeper.

Find out what Fred knows about the Franeks.

Round 3:

You are incredibly distraught over the death of your only daughter.

Accuse Dimitra and of killing your daughter. You realize now that she only befriended you and your husband for your money. Once you took it away, she couldn’t stand it and had to punish you in the cruelest way!

Fred Majors……………….

Fred is Marilyn Moore’s most recent boy toy. He is the heir to one of the largest fortunes for miles, but he is a very shallow individual. He is out for a good time. His relationship with Marilyn is superficial at best.

Secrets:

You have a gambling addiction and are buried in debt.

You are not in love with Marilyn. You date her for her money because your inheritance cannot arrive in time for your liking. She is currently keeping you afloat financially.

Round 1:

Flirt with the ladies, particularly Zyra…you are intrigued by her devilish nature. (After all, you are a bad boy)

Insist that your relationship is not serious with Marilyn.

Boss Marilyn around, demanding her seat, drink, money, etc. You have absolutely no respect for her.

Ask the Franeks why they come all the way from Europe just to visit the Moores. They seem very suspicious to you.

Round 2:

When Zachary asks you for his $15,000 that you owe him, you are extremely defensive. Tell him he’ll get his money… you just need more time.

Tell the Franeks that you heard they went to jail for a while. Try to find out why.

Ask Zyra about her witchcraft and what she is able to do.

You are very angry after Marilyn breaks up with you and are lost for a moment in a fit of rage. You insist that you were the best thing that ever happened to her, and she’ll be SORRY!

Round 3:

After the murder, you become concerned about your financial situation and become very quiet. Confide in Zyra that you don’t know what you’ll do now without Marilyn’s money. You can never pay back Zachary now.

You accuse the Franeks of conspiring to murder Marilyn. You say that they have seemed suspicious ever since you met them last year. They used the Moores to fund their treasure hunting, and once they pulled out, the Franeks’ true colors were revealed. They are murderers! After all, it was right after Marilyn spoke with them that she was murdered.

Zyra Byrne……

Zyra is a Mortician at a nearby funeral home. She has also been known to dabble in the dark arts of witchcraft. She is as talented as she is mysterious.

Secrets:

You have recently begun having regular meetings with your witches’ coven. Everything is progressing well and your powers of witchcraft are growing stronger and more diverse.

You and Richard were engaged to be married at one time. Just days before the wedding Richard broke it off. Within a month he was married to Sheri Moore, who became pregnant right away with Marilyn. You now hate Sheri.

You were not invited to this party. You have come with the intention of winning Richard over again.

Because of your heartbreak after Richard broke off the engagement, you have never married. You have also never gotten over it. You were always jealous of Marilyn. After all, she was supposed to be your daughter.

Round 1:

You feel the presence of spirits who dwell in this house. They are telling you there will be a murder this night. Announce for all to hear.

Tell people how you used to be engaged to Richard years ago. You don’t understand how he could be married to someone like Sheri who can be so boring and conventional.

If anyone asks, you are sure you got an invitation.

If anyone asks you who will die, warn them not to tempt fate.

Round 2:

Find out what happened between Tiana and Marilyn.

Tell Richard about the life he could have had. Tell him he settled for Mrs. BORING!! If he ridicules you, tell him he will pay for the pain he has caused you.

You have now cast a curse on Richard that he will be punished this night for the heartbreak he caused you so many years ago. Tell only Fred.

Tell Sheri that it is obvious that Richard doesn’t love her anymore. How could he?! The only thing holding them together is Marilyn…and you’re going to prove it.

Round 3:

*This round is filled with accusations. If you get accused, change the subject by accusing someone else. Once you have said what your character needs to say, continue to play your character while figuring out the mystery for yourself. Remember: You are also a suspect.

When someone screams you go to check the body for a pulse, and announce them dead. Ask some people to help carry the body away.

When you are accused of making your prediction come true, you admit to casting a curse on Richard. But that doesn’t mean you killed her. Obviously she had it coming. Threaten more curses on anyone who dares accuse you.

You accuse Richard of being the murderer. He is so wrapped up in his political campaign, he only saw Marilyn as a setback. He was so sick and tired of her; he just wanted her out of his life.

SOLUTION – TO BE READ BY THE CORONER AT THE END OF THE NIGHT

After questioning each of you and observing the curious behavior here tonight, I have determined who the murderer is.

Bryce Stratton was accused by some of you of being too obsessed with Marilyn, perhaps killing her so that no one else could have her. Bryce, however, is innocent.

Fred Majors owes Zachary Judd a large sum of cash.Zachary is mad at Fred and wants the money back. Yet he did not kill Marilyn as a threat to Fred, showing him that of which he would be capable. Zachary still loved her, though secretly, and could never dream of harming Marilyn.

You may be wondering why Zachary has a grudge against Fred here. Well, it turns out that Fred Majors is not the rich kid he pretends to be. He owes a lot of money due to his gambling addiction. Thus, Fred cannot be the murderer… he really didn’t care one way or another about Marilyn, but was simply dating her for her money.

Richard Moore has been accused by some of you of caring more about his political platform than his own daughter. He has been harsh with her to forward his own interests, and may have had his priorities misplaced, but this man did not kill Marilyn to accomplish his goal of becoming senator.

Even Tiana Quinn was accused of “having it in for Marilyn” after she ruined her acting career. Her honest and sincere sorrow after Marilyn’s death, though, convinces me that she is innocent. That being said, she was accusing the Franeks.

Hans Franek was the last person who spoke with Marilyn before her murder. He was obviously upset with Marilyn, saying she was the reason her father pulled out on his $5 million promise. Hans had also threatened Mr. Moore, saying he would make his life miserable – making him pay for going back on his word.

It seems as though all evidence points to the Franeks…but something just doesn’t add up. The Franeks are not amateurs when it comes to illegal activity. They know how to deal with diverting suspicion. Tiana Quinn drew much more attention to them this evening than Marilyn did, and as I see Tiana standing before me alive and well, I have eliminated both Hans and Dimitra from my list of suspects.

This leaves only two people: Zyra and Sheri, our hostess this unfortunate evening. Mrs. Moore had great love for Marilyn and had no motive for killing her. I would venture to say that she would sooner die herself than be a hand in her daughter’s demise.

So that just leaves Zyra Byrne. This rather mysterious mortician claims to be a witch in her spare time.
