New Sermon Series 6
We have two special worship experiences to look forward to in the month of February. The 19th will be Youth Sunday in both worship services. Over the years this has become a great tradition in our worship calendar. On this Sunday we get to experience the faith of the future through the incredible creativity of our youth and the adults who work with them. We have an exceptionally large group of high school seniors this year so it would be great for them to be able to look out on a full house of folks there to support and
encourage them on their faith journey.
The following Sunday we will enjoy the talents of Matt Vollmar, who is a Christian singer and musician. Matt is the lead singer for the Christian singing group “The Great Romance.” This group has performed at Little Grassy camp the last several summers and is well known by many of the youth and adults of our congregation. Matt is a deeply committed disciple of Christ who will bring a worship experience in word and song. We will not have the whole band, just Matt, so you don’t need to worry about it being too
loud.
I deeply hope you can attend these services and encourage you to invite a friend to come and witness the excitement of our youth
and worship with Matt Vollmar.
See you in worship,

you may hear him quote these words from Genesis
3:19, remember that you are dust… and to dust you
will return. These words are meant to remind us of
our own mortality and need for repentance. In that
recognition, we have the opportunity to dedicate
ourselves to drawing nearer to Jesus as we recognize
the season of Lent.
This year during Lent, the MUMC congregation will be
asked to participate in 40 days of prayer for our
DeUMC site. Prayer calendars will be distributed and
two prayer services will be held. Please consider
participating in Lent through attending Ash
Wednesday, personal fasting, and praying for our
new congregation in DeSoto.
This year, Ash Wednesday falls on March 1, and MUMC
will recognize this event with a church service at 7:00 pm.
What is Ash Wednesday? It is the first day of the Lenten
season which lasts 40 days - continuing until Easter
Sunday. Lent is a time when Christians focus on preparing
their hearts for Easter through acts of prayer and self-denial. You may hear people talk about
“giving something up” for Lent. When we fast something for Lent that is important to us in
our daily lives, we are called to remember the 40 days Jesus spent praying and fasting in the
desert when He endured temptation. In a small way, we become connected with His
suffering for us. This connection can personalize His love for us as individuals as we gain a
deeper understanding of what He gave up in order for us to be in relationship with Him.
At Ash Wednesday service, Pastor Larry will use ashes and make a sign of the cross on each
person’s forehead. While he gently swipes his blackened finger vertically and horizontally,

blood, sweat, and tears, humbling defeats and exhausting victories. No marriage I know more than a few weeks old could be described as a fairy tale come true.” (p. 21)
In the fiction category comes another new book about relationships - but in this case, not the relationship of marriage but rather the relationships within society, specifically race relations. In a riveting book, Small Great Things, Jodi Picoult builds upon a true story to portray racism and its effects through the situation of Ruth, an African-American nurse who is forbidden by a white racist father to touch his newborn child. In Picoult’s story this leads to a terrible situation, and charges are filed. The book is told from the view of the nurse, the father, and the nurse’s lawyer. Picoult takes the title of this book from a quote by Martin Luther King: If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”
Join the discussion on A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Saturday, February 18th at 10:15 am ***
A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door. Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

The Library Corner: New Things
New books in the Library: New items come into the church library on a regular basis, almost weekly --well, monthly for sure! That means a cruise around the library or the library tables in the upstairs and downstairs halls will often reveal something new to check out. Have a look at two new non-fiction books that center on themes appropriate to February—love and marriage. We also have a new and fascinating fiction book that examines racism through the story of a nurse in a hospital nursery.
Love Warrior by Glennon Doyle Melton. Melton, wife, mother, and founder of the online community Momastery, is the very image of success. But to get there she first had to fight an incredibly hard battle, a battle that started in childhood. She struggled mightily with issues of beauty, popularity, fitting in, and the constant feeling that if she were honest about who she was, no-one would accept her, let alone love her. This struggle took her through bulimia, alcoholism, an early abortion, and finally to a time in her life when she just started telling the truth about the depth of her struggles. That’s when she found out that so many others had some of the same problems, and they too had kept them hidden. But even then her struggles weren’t over—there was more to discover, and more to figure out, about herself, her husband, their relationship—and also about God, and grace, and love. This book is pretty strong stuff—and so is Melton—the “Love Warrior”.
The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God by Timothy Keller with Kathy Keller. The Kellers met while they were both pursuing their studies at a seminary. After nine years and three children they took a big step—moving to New York City and starting a new church— which now has about 5000 attendees. The book looks seriously at marriage through the lens of the Bible, and is also quite frank in describing marriage. Here is Keller in the first chapter:
“I’m tired of listening to sentimental talks on marriage . . . much of what I’ve heard on the subject has as much depth as a Hallmark card. While marriage is many things, it is anything but sentimental. Marriage is glorious but it is hard. It’s a burning joy and strength, and yet is also
