Gina has had to step aside whilst somebody else writes the front page of
Murringo Matters this month. She is much too humble to write an article
about herself, the very deserving winner of the Young Shire Citizen of the
Year! Gina accepted the award at the Australia Day Ceremony held at
Carrington Park in Young, supported by family and friends. Gina was
nominated for her untiring work for the community of Murringo and
Young. Gina works tirelessly for the Murringo Public School and the P&C
Association. She is on the executive of the Murringo Sportsground Trust
and the Murringo Tennis Club. Gina is also a keen supporter of the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church, the Murringo Fire Brigade and the Anvil Creative
Gallery. Gina has worked on numerous committees in Young itself,
including the very successful Relay For Life organising committee.
Gina was an invaluable member of the 150 Years of Education in Murringo
committee and devoted innumerable hours to the organisation of the
event. Gina is also the driving force behind this publication, Murringo
Matters, which takes a lot of time to produce each month. We all know
how special she is and how much she means to us all. Gina Galvin is the
unofficial Mayoress of Murringo and should be very proud of this very fine
achievement. Congratulations Gina!

I hear the School Bell We have some new faces gracing the playground at the school this year.
Lily Rice and Christopher Bartolo have begun their school journey, forming
the kindergarten class for 2011. Lily and Christopher have already spent a
lot of the time at the school and are enjoying spending more time with
their new friends.
Samantha McDonald is our other new student, joining Year 5 this year.
Samantha is a keen sportswoman and enjoys
playing the guitar. She has already made some great friends and is fitting in
beautifully.
Mrs Sonia Wheatley is replacing Mrs Kersti Dean for Term 1, whilst she is on
maternity leave. Mrs Wheatley lives in Cowra and is excited to be working
with all of our students. She will be teaching the Lower Division class, and
the whole school at times, along with Mrs Annette Parkman. Welcome to
Murringo guys!
We would like to wish all of the Murringo kids good luck at their school
swimming carnivals coming up this term. The Young Small School Swimming
Carnival will be held on Wednesday the 9th of February and we are expecting
some great results this year.
Our beloved Lower Division teacher, Mrs Kersti Dean, has welcomed the newest
addition to her family over the school holidays. Kersti, her husband Ben and their
daughter Jas said hello to Nyxon Lucas on the 11th of January at 2.46pm. What a
birthdate, 1.1.11! He was 8 pound 14 and 52cm. Nyxon is a gorgeous little boy who
is doing very well with his sleeping and eating. Jas is helping mummy with the nappy
changing, the feeding and all the other jobs big sisters have to do.
Congratulations to you all and we hope that you enjoy this wonderful time together.
As parents, teachers and students prepare for another school year, Australian schools are being urged to
unite with SchoolAid to support its Floods Relief Appeal and take part in a National Relief Appeal Day
observing a minute’s silence and donating gold coins.
SchoolAid demonstrated its strength as a leader in schools fundraising when it rallied schools across the
nation in 2009 to support its Victorian Bushfire Appeal raising close to $1 million and subsequently the
organisation distributed these funds to schools and organisations supporting the recovery process for
children. SchoolAid Founder, Sean Gordon says “it’s time to do it again, the kids being impacted by these
devastating floods need our support – as a Queenslander, I am witnessing first hand the scale of this
disaster, but my experience with SchoolAid tells me that we can make a difference”.
By observing a minute silence at 1pm AEDST on 17 February, lowering flags to half mast, and each student
bringing in a gold coin donation towards the Appeal, Aussie Schools are set to make a huge difference and
raise funds for our friends, neighbours and families overwhelmed by the flooding and its unprecedented
impact.
If you would like to support Murringo Public School’s fundraising efforts to support those affected by the
recent disasters in Queensland, please feel free to donate or join the minute’s silence at the school.

Murringo says Goodbye to Fred……………... Fredrick George Taylor (Fred) was born on the 18th July 1935 and sadly
passed away last month on the 15th January at the age of 75 years.
Fred was the youngest son of Isaac & Beatrice Taylor. Fred is survived by
his older sister Alma. Fred lived his childhood years at the Taylors property
at Murringo. Fred attended Murringo School where he completed all of his
formal education. As a very small boy his mother asked a close neighbour
Mrs Gruber to have her daughter, Nancy, give Fred a lift to school on her
push bike, as it was a long walk for a little boy and the Taylors did not have
a car. Fred sat on the seat and poor Nancy had to stand on the pedals as
well as peddle the bike all the way to school. The next year Nancy’s parents
provided her with a horse to ride to school. As many of us know Fred never
liked horses, this finished the doubling to school with Nancy. Fred became
older and proficient enough to ride his own bike to school. There were
about 36 – 37 children at Murringo school during his time there in the
1940’s and most students completed education there. Fred had many friends during his time at Murringo
School many who continued as friends all his life. On week-ends Fred & his mates would go Rabbiting.
They would hunt rabbits on the neighbouring properties, along the mountains around the Murringo Gap
and on the hills.
Fred’s first job was working for Mr Henry (HSB) Young at “Spring Valley”, a property Fred also worked on
later in life, when it was and still is owned by the Taubman family. The work involved general farm work,
digging out rabbits, digging post holes and fencing. His weekly wage at the time was around ten Shillings:
$1 in today’s currency, a week! After a while he left Henry Young’s to work for Bruce Walker at
Templemore. His work there included making hay and again rabbiting. Catching up to 500 per day. They
would trap and hang them up one day and send them off to the Harden depot to market the next day.
Fred left Templemore to start work for Jim and then Len Dowling. Fred drove to work in his new two tone
Austin A70 Ute. Whilst working for Jim Dowling, making hay on his lucerne paddock next to Murringo
cemetery, Fred had a very serious accident with Jim’s International W6 tractor. The road past “The
Barracks” the residence at the time of Bob Patterson & his family was notoriously rough and pot holed
with many corrugations, which caused the front wheels of the W6 to bounce out of control, resulting in
the tractor rolling over, pinning Fred’s left leg under the back wheel. Bob Wilding the post master at the
time saw the accident happen before his eyes and raced down to assist. Fred was rushed to hospital
where he made a complete recovery and was able to resume work after being released from hospital. A
very lucky escape for him!
During his early years working for Len Dowling, Fred showed an exceptional aptitude for anything
mechanical things like engines, tractors, trucks, cars and farm machinery. He was sent off to the
Hawkesbury Ag College to do a course on Diesel engines, so with his friend and neighbour Kevin Gruber
they attended the Hawkesbury Ag College to learn all about diesels.
In 1952 Fred was called up to do National Service. Along with
many young men of the same age, including Jimmy De Britt,
Fred Williams, Bob Slater, Jack Malloy, John Minehan, John
Reamer and Col Allison. They did 3 months intensive training at
Puckapunyal in Victoria.
Whilst working for Len Dowling that he met Hazel Gluas, his
true love and soul mate of 53 years! They were introduced to
each other by Hazel’s brother Maurice, one night at the
Criterion Hotel here in Young; rather ironic considering neither
one of them was a drinker!
Fred & Hazel were married on January 4 1958 they moved into
Hazeldean, the house they had purchased from Burrinjuck and moved to
Murringo. Ross was born 10 months later on October 2 1958, and then
Janelle came along on May 22 1961. Fred was a very keen house
renovator and remodelled the home several times.
Also around this time Fred and his nephew Sam took up Midget Car
racing at the Wambannumba circuit. Sam and Fred had a lot of fun and
even won a few races with it. On week-ends during Prune season, Fred
would work for Basham’s at Wirrimah, in the Dehydrator. It was hard work and Fred noticed that they
had a welder tucked away in the shed. This is where he started to weld and soon realised that he could do
welding jobs and earn more money out on his own. He went out to search for a welder of his own, finally
he tracked one down over at Temora, the only one to be found in the whole district. He installed it in the
shed behind his parent’s home. There he taught himself to weld! What a naturally great welder he was!
Without formal training he picked up the art as well as any boiler maker.
In the early days of the steel fabrication business he and his nephew Sam also turned to carrying. Many
people will remember the Austin truck they carted hay on. Robert Tout’s Wambanumba where they
carted and stacked 22,000 big square bales in 10 days including 2 days with break downs. A marathon
effort, this caused Fred to suffer a hernia, no wonder!
The steel fabrication business flourished and soon they were building sheds all over the place as far away
as Narromine, Walgett, Mittagong, Yass and Wagga, taking them away from home for weeks at a time.
Fred also invented a cattle crush bail head with an overcenter locking mechanism.
Fred also went in for rearing Poddy calves, in the 70’s inventing all sorts of gadgets to mix the powdered
milk, mix the feed grain and even feed the calves. A memorable trip was when Fred, Kevin Gruber and Ray
Dowling made to Colo Heights on the Putty road to pick up a load of day old calves. Loaded with hay to
take up to the bloke who Fred was getting the calves from. The police pulled them up over between
Blayney and Bathurst and asked Fred why he had so much hay on the back. As convincing as he could be,
he told the officer that we were taking hay to a poor old bloke that was in a bad way with no feed for his
livestock because of drought, the office was very impressed and sent us on our way with his compliments
and no check of the log book, the reason he stopped us for in the first place. We duly unloaded the hay
and loaded on all the calves. When we arrived back at Murringo, Kevin took about 4 calves, Ray took
another 2 leaving Fred with about 40 day old calves to feed in the morning.
Fred designed the Taylor bandsaw, which became a full time production model selling over 3,000
Australia wide. This work kept the workshop very busy in periods when there was little coming in from
the farming sector due to droughts and low commodity prices.
His right hand man who deserves a special mention was Murray Dawes; Murray started with Fred after
leaving school and soon took to the steel fabrication business like Fred. After Ross left for the west
Murray ran the workshop whenever Fred was away on business. During this time they built stock floats,
grain bins, truck bodies, lengthened truck chassis, they made trash flow undercarriages for seed drills and
numerous other jobs big and small, whilst, all the time turning out the Bandsaws.
After 35 years Fred decided it was time to retire as the kids had grown up and left home and for Hazel and
him to move to town. He purchased the block of land in Wombat Street and built their new house,
complete with workshop out the back. It wasn’t long before he saw another business opportunity. So he
went back into the Water carting business. His hobbies were listening to music, especially country music.
He loved the computer and completed several courses at Young TAFE College on computer use. Fred and
Hazel also enjoyed outdoor and indoor bowls.
Fred is survived by his wife Hazel, children Ross and Janelle and their families.
