The City of Fairfax Band Association Music and Community Celebrating its forty-eighth season, The City of Fairfax Band Association (CFBA) supports the performing arts in the City of Fairfax, Fairfax County, and in the greater Northern Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan area. Led by talented and experienced musical staff, CFBA ensembles entertain audiences, and enrich Northern Virginia culture, performing at civic festivals, patriotic pro- grams, and commemorative ceremonies. The Musicians Ensembles with varying musical backgrounds, members come together to pro- vide the highest quality wind band music in family-friendly settings. Performers from all walks of life share the love of music, bringing solid musical experience and background to the organization. The Ensembles Ensembles include the nationally renowned City of Fairfax Band, as well as Main Street Community Band, Alte Kameraden, Fairfax Swing Band, Fairfax Saxophone Quartet, Main Street Brass Quintet, and its Educational Division Ensembles. Educational Outreach In addition to its sponsorship of NVYW Symphonic and Junior Winds, the organ- ization supports music education in the schools and community. CFBA annual- ly sponsors and conducts a Young Artist Competition, with winners selected from high school senior and junior class entrants who play wind and percussion instruments. The Young Artist winner is featured as guest soloist in the City of Fairfax Bands April concert and receives a scholarship to further his or her music education. The City of Fairfax Band Association is funded in part by The Arts Council of Fairfax County, the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, and The City of Fairfax. Music and Community

Celebrating its forty-eighth season, The City of Fairfax Band Association (CFBA) supports the performing arts in the City of Fairfax, Fairfax County, and in the greater Northern Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan area. Led by talented and experienced musical staff, CFBA ensembles entertain audiences, and enrich Northern Virginia culture, performing at civic festivals, patriotic pro-grams, and commemorative ceremonies.

The Musicians

Ensembles with varying musical backgrounds, members come together to pro-vide the highest quality wind band music in family-friendly settings. Performers from all walks of life share the love of music, bringing solid musical experience and background to the organization.

The Ensembles

About Northern Virginia Youth Winds

Northern Virginia Youth Winds represent the Education-al Division of the City of Fairfax Band Association. With members selected by competitive audition, NVYW Sym-phonic and Junior Winds are elite wind bands repre-senting talented musicians from school music programs throughout Northern Virginia. The ensembles seek to serve the region by supporting students, music teachers and the musical community of the Washington DC Metro-politan Area. The mission of NVYW includes:

Providing additional, supplemental performance opportu-nities for advanced students.

Expanding student access to advanced wind repertoire.

Supporting elementary, middle and high school band pro-grams, their directors, students and families.

Strengthening the bonds of musicianship, friendship and common experience for music students across the region.

Serving as another musical voice, with a regional perspec-tive, for the protection, preservation and advancement of music the region by supporting students, music teachers and the musical community of the Washington DC Metro-politan Area.

Linda Gammon, Conductor, Junior Winds

Linda J. Gammon is the director of the NVYW Junior Winds. Prior to assuming this position she directed middle school bands at three middle schools in Fair-fax County, VA for over 30 years. She is a native of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine and received her Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Clarion Uni-versity of Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts degree in conducting from George Mason University. She currently is the university supervisor for student teachers from Mason, JMU, and Shenandoah Con-servetory. Under Ms. Gammon’s direction, her middle school bands earned consistent superior ratings, awards,

and enjoyed state, regional and national recognition including four appearanc-es at the 1992, 1993, 2000, 2012 Virginia Music Educators State Conferences and the 1993, 2000 Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chi-cago. In 1997 Ms. Gammon and the Robinson Middle School Symphonic Band were awarded the prestigious John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Sil-ver Cup Award, the highest honor bestowed on a middle school band pro-gram.

Laurel Phillip, Associate Conductor

Laurel Phillip is the associate conductor of the NVYW Junior Winds. Mrs. Phillip began her teaching ca-reer at Seneca Ridge Middle School in Sterling and now is currently teaching at Rachel Carson Middle School in Fairfax County. At Carson she is responsi-ble for teaching the concert bands, the percussion ensemble, and the RCMS Jazz band. Laurel Phillip is a member of the National Band Association, NAfME, VMEA and is the Registration Coordinator for the Vir-ginia Music Educator’s Conference. She is a nation-ally recognized Suzuki Flute teacher through the Su-zuki Association of the Americas. During her sum-mers she spends time teaching at various band camps throughout Loudoun and Fairfax.

Mrs. Phillip graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville earning a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Flute Performance. She earned her Master’s degree in Education from George Mason University.

Mrs. Phillip lives in Aldie, Virginia with her daughter, Hannah, and husband, Jonathan, a high school band director. She enjoys helping his high school marching band in the late summer and fall months.

Denny Stokes, Conductor, Symphonic Winds

Denny Stokes is the founding conductor of the Northern Virginia Symphonic Winds. Prior to assuming this position, he directed high school bands at three schools in Fairfax County, Virginia for thirty-two years, and continues to serve as a clinician, conductor and adjudicator in the eastern United States.

Mr. Stokes attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, receiving his BS in music education. He holds an MM in conducting at George Mason Uni-versity, where he co-conducts the Mason Sym-phonic Band. He is the only high school band director in the United States to have earned the prestigious Sudler Flag of Honor with two high school bands. Elected to the American Bandmas-

ters Association in 2005, he also maintains professional affiliations with the National Band Association, Music Educators National Conference, Virginia Music Educators Association, Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Associa-tion, Fairfax Band Directors Association and Phi Beta Mu. Mr. Stokes is a 2017 inductee to the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity Hall of Fame. He has served VBODA as chairman in two districts and as Presi-dent of VBODA, and continues as an active past president.

Jonathan Phillip, Associate Conductor

Jonathan Phillip is the associate conductor of the Northern Virginia Symphonic Winds. Mr. Phillip is a graduate of James Madison University and holds a master’s degree from George Mason Uni-versity. He is also certified to be a K-12 Administra-tor through The George Washington University. He studied tuba with Mark Theile and Kevin Stees.

Mr. Phillip is the director of bands at John Champe High School, in Aldie Virginia. With an inaugural marching band of 24 members, the marching band has grown to 170 members in five years. The stu-dents have earned superior ratings in marching band, concert band, Virginia Honor Band, per-formed at the 2015 Virginia Music Educators Con-ference, and performed at the 2017 National Con-

cert Band Festival. The program has grown to serve over 250 students in-cluding four concert bands, jazz band, and percussion ensembles. The pro-gram also offers more opportunities for musical growth with indoor color guard, indoor drumline, various small ensembles, and a thriving private lesson program.

Mr. Phillip enjoys spending his free time with his wife, Laurel Phillip, their newborn daughter, Hannah, and their pets Shirley and Tink.
