The Musical Advantage

At Long & McQuade we know first hand that playing music, on any instrument and in any style, can be a life enriching experience.

We believe that every person, regardless of age or level of experience, is capable of acquiring the skills and knowledge required to make playing a musical instrument a rewarding activity.

We know that learning to play an instrument requires commitment and practice, but taking lessons in the supportive, creative environment of our Music Education Centres makes learning fun!

Long & McQuade – committed to excellence in music instruction.

Significant scientific research has repeatedly linked music making to childhood brain development. Researchers are providing us with an unprecedented understanding of how we think and how we learn. Recent studies have shown that children who play a musical instrument test higher in math related spatial-temporal skills, verbal skills and even memory reasoning skills than children who do not play an instrument. We now know that music is a vital part of a complete education.

Other benefits of playing an instrument includes commitment and team

work when playing with others, self-discipline and

time management skills gained through practicing, problem solving and goal setting, creativity, and even stress reduction.

But perhaps the best reason for playing music is for the sheer enjoyment it provides.

MUSIC EDUCATION CENTREExperience the thrill of rehearsing and performing in a Rock Band! Students gain skills in rhythm and lead guitar, bass, drums, percussion, keyboards and vocals under the skilled guidance of experienced instructors. Popular and contemporary rock standards are rehearsed while learning about lighting techniques, live sound and stage set up.

The performance at the end of each session is a showcase of young talent.

Call your nearest Long & McQuade Music Education Centre for more information about the tremendously popular Rock Skool program.

Examinations are one way of giving the student concrete goals to aim for in both technique and musicality and are also a motivational tool for regular practice.

Royal Conservatory examinations, the nationally recognized standard for music examinations in Canada, are meant to be a positive and developmental experience. Students are tested on the performance of repertoire, studies and technique. Ear training and sight-reading requirements

help develop and reinforce solid musicianship and skills. The RCM syllabi list the examination requirements for each grade and subject.

For more information about the RCM exams, visit their website at www.rcmexaminations.org or pick up an RCM bookmark at any one of our Music Education Centres. Teachers at Long & McQuade will prepare you for these optional exams.

Rock Skool

Benefits of Optional Examinations

Long & McQuade hosts recitals twice a year, in December and in June, to give interested students the opportunity and experience of sharing their music with others. Preparing for a performance is a great motivator, and the performance itself provides a sense of pride and accomplishment for the student and his or her family.

All of our special music groups, from fiddle classes to Rock Skool, wrap up their sessions with a performance for family & friends to showcase their musical talents.

Community music festivals also offer students an opportunity to perform in a music competition or non-competitive classes. Professional adjudicators give constructive suggestions on the student’s performance.

Contact your local Long & McQuade Music Education Centre for festival dates and how to register.
