SALZBURG WEILL CORNELL SEMINARS OF THE OPEN MEDICAL INSTITUTE (OMI)
In 1993, physicians from Weill Medical College
of Cornell University enthusiastically agreed to
share their knowledge and expertise with young
colleagues from the former communist world.
What began with one Salzburg Weill Cornell
Seminar has evolved into the Open Medical
Institute, which organizes 40 seminars for
1,700 fellows, 150 observerships and at least
30 distance learning opportunities per year.
Over 17,000 doctors from Central and Eastern
Europe, Central Asia, Russia, Africa, the Middle
East and Latin America have participated to date.
The Open Medical Institute operates under
the auspices of The American Austrian Foundation
with funding from the Open Society Foundations,
the Austrian Ministry of Science, Research and
Economy and other donors.
Contrary to the hierarchical top-down educational
model practiced in Central and Eastern Europe,
the Salzburg Weill Cornell seminars are based
on the American Socratic model where students
are expected to question and challenge their
teachers. All faculty members serve pro bono,
sharing time, expertise and resources with
colleagues from less privileged societies.
Faculty and fellows learn from each other.
This give and take is what makes the seminars
so worthwhile, resulting in ongoing collegial
relationships. Fellows remain in their countries
thereby stemming the brain drain tide and
effecting lasting brain gain.
Upon conclusion of each seminar, fellows receive
an audio-visual documentation of the week’s
lectures as a CD ROM, which they share with
colleagues when they return home. Fellows are
also able to update their knowledge by accessing
the Online Case Library and Medical Handbook,
Satellite Symposia, videoconferences and
webcasts of the Open Medical Institute.
Judging from our alumni’s success, this program
has provided them with the knowledge, skills
and confidence to become better doctors. While
interacting globally with colleagues and mentors,
they continue to work locally, improving health
care in their countries for the benefit of their
patients.
As the recent Ebola pandemic showed, without
qualified healthcare professionals on the ground,
it is impossible to guarantee that patients have
access to appropriate treatment, to prevent
diseases from spreading. The World Bank has
made it a priority, to not only respond to crises,
but to build capacity for a long term solution.
The Salzburg Weill Cornell Seminars show how
this can be done.
