CHICAGO SINFONIETTA:MUSIC FOR THE NEW WORLD
This one-hour special program features Dvorák’s New World Symphony, which embodies the American spirit through the eyes of an immigrant.
The concert is conducted by Maestro Mei-Ann Chen, an immigrant herself, whose personal connection to the theme ensures a very moving performance. “Growing up in Taiwan, I always thought Dvorák’s music speaks to me,” says Chen in an exclusive interview that is part of this special presentation.
Chicago Sinfonietta: Music for the New World airs Saturday, April 9 at 6 p.m. with an encore presentation on Sunday, April 24 at 7 p.m.
Composer Antonín Dvorák lived in the United States from 1892-1895, during which time he
wrote “From the New World” to capture what he thought was the national music of America.
In what is already a tradition for the Chicago Sinfonietta concerts, the show includes innovative ways of introducing symphonic music by unexpected guests. “We have a little surprise that we can’t quite disclose. Other than I’m going to say that we’re going to have surprise elements in collaboration with the New World Symphony that the audience will find very refreshing, because we’re trying to set the scene of the specific era that inspired Dvorák for his masterwork,” Chen says.
Created in 1987 by former music director and founder Maestro Paul Freeman, the Chicago Sinfonietta’s goal is to promote diversity, inclusion, and innovative programming.
