Music Genres

PopO I decided to choose ‘pop’ as the first genre as arguably I

feel it is the most popular, as it is the most mainstream and well known of them. When regarding the music videos they can sometimes come across as a tad crazy and very creative as there seems to be no particular guidelines for the pop genre in the music videos.

O Some of the most mainstream Pop artists like Taylor Swift puts so much money into her videos, they come across as recognisable to the audience, for example having celebrities in them. Taylor would tend to have lots of shots of herself and other celebrities to promote herself and her own brand.

O The most mainstream ones would include dance routines and through out narratives for the viewer to follow throughout.

RockO When regarding rock music, and there music video, typical

stereotypes would be that they are very heavy and dark but that isn't the case, there are many variations of rock and the more heavy ones could come under genres like ‘screamo’ ‘heavy metal’ and ‘slasher rock.’

O I would argue that rock is a genre that is very similar to indie/alternative music and usually the music videos are very similar but perhaps rock would have more dark undertones to it.

O The typical conventions of rock music videos would not so be narrative videos or even conceptual like pop is, but more so performance with a great deal of emphasis and filming of the instruments and the band singing. It usually wouldn’t have a narrative for the viewer to follow.

Indie/alternativeO This genre is the genre I have based my music video

around, it can be looked as a mix pop and rock, but not as mainstream as them both.

O The music videos are much more artistic with much more meaning to decipher from them and are a usually a mix of all the styles so narrative, conceptual and performance. So essentially they sometimes even evoke a message, so that can be freedom, self love, anarchy even they stand out from the other genres. The main aspect they promote is even individuality usually, as that is what the term ‘indie’ stands for.

O Unlike pop videos they do not try as hard, so little makeup usually and effects they tend to be natural and still fun but definitely not over the top.
