An old TV ad for a chocolate crunch bar featured anodd character-Mr. More. His job was to make surethat there was always more nuts, more chocolate andso on in the recipe. So in the first issue of this NewYear, let's see what Mr. More might be asking forfrom the music and radio industries in 2001 :* More radio diversityThis has been a constant plea through the years(although Internet radio is starting to cater for thisneed). The strength of radio is not in cloning but inproviding listeners with choices. The real winnerswill be those who can offer a genuinely distinct prod-uct, while still working within mainstream. But don'tneglect specific niche audiences either.* More music online2000 was an experimental year for the majors in rollingout their online strategies. 13 regain the resulting vacuumfilled by Napster & Co. they need now to speed up theprocess. The excuse of waiting for a more secure environ-ment is no longer valid. It's time to make the big jump.* More music for the masses

2000 provided a fine crop of talent, and by the sound of it,2001 looks set to be another Millennium Year, with a lineup of releases from Michael Jackson to Radiohead.* More new actsOne glance at M&M's 2000 year-end charts provesthat there is consumer demand for new artists-someof the biggest hits of the year, such as Bomfunk MC'sFreestyler and Anastacia's I'm Outta Love were frombrand new artists unknown a year ago (will they last? That's another matter!). Radio programmers, takenote-new talent is not detrimental to your ratings. Itmight even boost them. Just after Christmas came the news of the unex-pected death on December 23 of BMG's chief execu-tive designate Rudi Gassner. Gassner was by any cri-teria an impressive music executive, who over thecourse of a decade turned BMG'sinternational operations into apowerhouse, and he was gettingready for his biggest challenge todate-driving BMG into the newMillennium. Although he had bynature a distant type of tempera-ment, he could also show realwarmth and sensitivity. He willbe sorely missed, not least bythis magazine.

Forever to turn Surf into Juiceby Jon Heasman

LONDON - Brighton alternativerock and dance station Surf 107.2has been bought in a £4 5 milliondeal by Forever Broadcasting, which plans to extend it's emergingJuice brand to the south coast city.

Last year, Forever purchasedLiverpool alternative rock anddance station Crash FM andrebranded it as Juice 107.6. Itplans a similar re -branding exer-cise at Surf, which has struggledfor audience in a market dominat-ed by Capital Radio -owned CHRstation Southern FM since itslaunch in March 1998. In the mostrecent Rajar audience figures Surfrecorded a 2.7% share of listening.

"Brighton is a vibrant centre, with a lot of young people-it's agreat place for the Juice format,"

says Forever managing directorJohn Josephs, who emphasisesthat Surf "will be rebranded overtime rather than overnight. This isnot a Crash FM type of situation

where we had to start fromscratch-there's a very nice audi-ence there which will provide astrong foundation."

Surf's programming, which For-ever says will remain true to itsmixed alternative rock/dance for-mat, is set to come under the aus-

pices of Forever's group pro-gramme director Giles Squire, witha similar playlist to the Juice sta-tion in Liverpool.

Surf was 40% owned by TheLocal Radio Company (TLRC),Which, as part of the Surf deal, takes a 20% stake in Forever. Surf'sother shareholders were foundingdirectors Daniel Nathan andEugene Perera of Brighton -basedFestival Radio/Level Broadcast(55%) and Paradise Radio (5%).

In an unrelated development,Radio Investments Ltd (RIL) hastaken 100% control of TLRC and alsogains majority control of the York -based Minster Radio Group and HotAC station Stray FM/Harrogate fol-lowing a deal with the GWR Group, which has exchanged its financialinterests in those companies for a20% shareholding in RIL.

Record results show power of NRJby Marie Agnes Bruneau

PARIS - France's biggest commer-cial radio group NRJ has postedrecord revenues and profits for thefinancial year 1999-2000.

In the year ended September 30,NRJ showed a net pre-taxprofit growth of 48.1% to Ffr382.5 million (E 58.2 m),with revenues of Ffr1.81 bil-lion, a 17.5% increase on theprevious year.

Revenues from NRJ'sinternational operations innine European countriesgrew by 20.3% to Ffr 290.7 million. The German and Austrian compa-nies delivered profits for the firsttime (Ffr 9.5m compared to lossesof Ffr 15.1m the previous year).

In Belgium and Switzerland, revenues reached Ffr 46.9m with

profits of Ffr 3m.The Nordic region(Finland, Norway, Sweden) saw itsrevenues grow by 22.8% to Ffr83.4m, but overall operationsshowed a deficit of Ffr 43m.

Outgoing NRJ managing direc-tor Alain Weill (pictured), giving

his last presentation tofinancial analysts at theend of December, said that"results would have beenpositive in Sweden if it was-n't for the very expensivecost of licenses."

Weill, who since January1 has become CEO of Nex-

tradio, the operating company offull -service station RMC, said hecouldn't hoped to leave on a highernote, with positive financial figuresand major gains in audience for allNRJ's domestic networks.

Weill predicted that Gold net-

work Nostalgie, which saw a 25%hike in audience share in 2000,"has the potential to reach 10% [incumulative reach] and should, inthe medium -term, have revenuesclose to those achieved by [CHRnetwork] NRJ."

Weill also noted the narrowingof the gap between NRJ andFrance's market leader, full -servicenetwork RTL.

NRJ Group general managerMarc Pallain, also speaking at theresults presentation, said thatinternationally the group's maintarget remains the UK, althoughhe revealed that NRJ is also "look-ing very closely at Holland." Hewas more lukewarm aboutprospects for development in Italyand Spain, the other main Euro-pean territories currently withoutan NRJ presence.

Los 40 hits 3m in new -look EGMby Howell Llewellyn

MADRID - Spain's CHRmarket -leader, SER's Los40 Principales, has toppedthe three million daily lis-teners mark for the firsttime since 1994 in the thirdand final EGM survey of2000 covering October andDecember.

SER's four main musicnetworks attracted the earsof more than 70% of Spanishradio listeners in the firstsurvey to include a newlyexpanded telephone datagathering service, intro-duced by EGM to achievegreater "statistical solidity,"according to EGM executivepresident Julian Bravo.

Bravo says that an addi-tional 9,000 phone calls persurvey (or 27,000 per year)are being incorporated intothe ratings survey, whichpreviously made 43,000calls each year.

However, a one-off exper-iment which saw early pro-visional figures releasedlate November-requestedby the major networks tomonitor the impact of pro-gramme and presenterchanges made in Septem-ber-are likely to be

dropped. The confusion, caused by two sets of fig-ures being released within amonth for the same survey,is unlikely to be repeated, according to Bravo.

Los 40's three milliondaily listeners representedan increase of 192,000 or6.7% over the previous sur-vey covering April and May2000. The only other musicnetwork winning morethan a million daily listen-ers was SER's Spanish -lan-guage music Cadena DIAL,remaining unchanged on1.6 million.

Meanwhile, an interest-ing struggle has emergedfor third place among themusic networks betweenSER's AC/Gold M-80 Radioand Cadena COPE's Hot AC

Cadena 100. As in the previ-ous survey, M-80 came outtops with 931,000 daily lis-teners (up 7.1%), but Cade-na 100 has increased itsaudience (and clawed backsome lost ground) by mov-ing up 15.2% to 924,000 lis-teners. The first survey of2000, covering January -March, saw Cadena 100 winnearly 1.1 million listenersagainst M -80's 842,000.

Luis Merino, director ofSER's music radio divisionCadenas Musicales, says:"Our objectives have beenmore than fulfilled. M -80'sperformance is especiallypleasing because it has onlyhalf the number of stationsof Cadena 100-just 34nationwide compared to 60 -odd for Cadena 100."

OSLO - IFPI Norway sec-retary general SmmundFiskvikhas has sent a letterordering Scandinavianwebcaster Nordic WebRadio (NWR) to immediate-ly shut down its Internet -only radio services or facecourt action.

The move follows abreakdown in negotiationsbetween IFPI and the Oslo -based company on Decem-ber 14 over royalty pay-ments for music played onNNVR's Internet channels

(M&M, December 23).The legal foundation

behind the local label feder-ation's letter is Norway'sCopyright Act of 1961,which prevents "phono-grams and other soundrecordings from beingreproduced without theconsent of the producer."

Says Fiskvik: "If [NWR]wanted to do this the rightway, they would have hadto approach each individualrecord company to seekapproval for it."

He adds: "Since [NWR]has English language on its

website, it's obvious thatthey're making this avail-able for all countries in theworld. For instance, theyhave 15 songs by The Beat-les in their [music] library. Iassume that people in theUK industry would not berelaxed about this," he says.

lion albums-later, the partnership ofband and mentor is stronger thanever, thanks to a triumphant returnto peak form on album number nineAll That You Can't Leave Behind.Number One in 31 territories, therecord narrowly missed the top spotin the States despite selling morethan 400,000 copies-twice as manyas US chart -toppers Radioheadshipped the previous month.

Luck obviously played its part inbringing the two parties together, butMcGuinness explains that from thatpoint on, a methodical attention todetail and unswerving faith in his act, combined with the group's undoubtedtalent, have enabled U2 to join theranks of the all-time greats. "You haveto believe in the group-that's themost important thing," McGuinnesssays. "You have to trust them and fol-low their instincts-you have yourown as well-but if their instincts arenot right you've got the wrong group. But then you must support them andproduce the career and business envi-ronment in which they can do theirwork to their own satisfaction. Ifthey're not pleasing themselves, there's nothing."

Business infrastructureTo provide the optimum businessinfrastructure for his charges,McGuinness was quick to open a sec-ond office in New York for his 25 -strong Dublin -based companyPrinciple Management. "Principle

Paul McGuinness put-and keeps-U2 at the very topthrough a combination of hard work, attention to detail, hard work... and a little luck, as Adam Haworth finds out.

days Island Records was an indie andthere was a different licensee in everyterritory" McGuinness tells M&M. "Ithink at one time Island had as manyas 14 or 15 different licensees aroundthe world, so we got used to workingeach territory in its own right. Weweren't able to plug into any interna-tional system that Universal has now,so getting to know those licensees andtreating each one individually wasthe Island Records way-and that'show I learnt the business."

Consequently, McGuinness says "itwas a great triumph" getting TheJoshua Tree album to number one "allover the world through that system ofdifferent licensees in each country."

Personal involvementThese days Island helps make up thebiggest record conglomerate on theplanet, but U2's manager emphasisesthat personal involvement with thelabel is still essential to keepingthings running smoothly. "I find itreally satisfying and interesting towork with those people because theyreally are experts. It's always been mypractice to acknowledge that majorcompanies really wish to be infiltrat-ed," he says. "They really want peoplelike us that come along and say, 'OK,let's make a plan and let's carry it outprofessionally and with some ener-gy'-they are never the enemy for us.They are very much partners and col-leagues."

A surprising feature of U2's cur -

"It's always been my practice toacknowledge that major companiesreally wish to be infiltrated."

Management has had an office inNew York since the early '80s and assoon as I could afford it," he explains."Artists should understand [that]they have to invest in their owncareer, and their managers ought tobe prepared to invest in the manage-ment structure.

"If you're trying to run a big organ-isation like U2's has become with onephone and a desk, you're at the mercyof the record company and the rest ofthe industry. You really have to pro-duce quite a strong organisationaround the artist to make your pres-ence felt when plans are being made. We've always understood that, andthe record companies we work withrespect it and welcome it."

The record company that U2 workswith is Universal Island, but in theearly days the band and managementdidn't have the global resources cur-rently available to them. "In those

rent marketing campaign is that it isthe first time management and recordlabel has looked to harness televisionas the primary tool for raising publicawareness. "Opportunities on TV inthe past were not perhaps so great,"continues McGuinness. "Music cul-ture within TV didn't exist [and] TVhad a habit in the past of reducingrock'n'roll and diminishing it. Andyou always have to be aware that themajority of people are listening to itthrough a three-inch speaker." Whathas changed now, in his view, is that"TV organisations around the worldare much more amenable to peoplelike us working with them to get thesound as good as it can be, whereasperhaps a decade ago they were muchmore resistant."

Despite a reputation for embracingnew technology U2's official websitehas only recently gone live. "I waswaiting for somebody to undertake the

very considerable expense," explainsMcGuinness. "Also there was an enor-mous network of very good unofficialsites which we will continue to workwith. U2 have more unofficial sitesthan any other artist, so when wewere going to put up one of our own itreally had to be very good and I thinkthe new site is pretty good.

"We certainly spent a lot of moneyon it and we had this rather strangesituation where World Online-whowe had a distribution agreement withand who funded it-seem to havechanged their mind about whetherthey want to be in the music business. No doubt it'll become clear over thenext few months whether they do. Inthe meantime we have a marvelloussite up there and it's turning into avery important part of our activities."

As to the perceived threat posed tothe international music community byfree digital downloads, McGuinness isphlegmatic. "I think the record busi-ness as a whole has been slow to adoptthe technology and it ill -behoves themto complain now the technology is offand running before they've figured outhow to collect money on it," he says."And frankly we're not waiting forthem-we've adopted the technology.I'm sure the vested interests-themajors-will figure out a way of col-.lecting from the Internet over time. It's worth noting that record saleshave continued to increase with thissupposedly catastrophic period for theindustry It reminds me of when theindustry ran that really stupid cam-paign in the '80s-'Home taping iskilling music'. I'm not worried aboutit. Our job is to make the music and

make it exciting and get it out topeople."

U2 are notoriously one of the veryfew British acts to have broken theStates in the last 20 years-a factthat Paul McGuinness acknowledgeswith mixed emotions. "It's a pity thetradition of British music exporting toNorth America seems to have prettywell stopped. I think there are policyquestions but I also think it's the kindof artists that are being produced-they don't have that kind of visionand they perhaps don't have the kindof almost imperialism that we have.We really wanted to conquer territo-ries, we wanted to be big every-where-and so did the Beatles, so didthe Stones, so did the great groups. The great American groups wanted tobe big in Britain. That two-way streetmay not exist at the moment but Ithink it will come back."

Breaking AmericaMcGuinness reiterates the rule that"the only way to break America is tospend extraordinary long periods oftime there. And it amuses me when Ihear English artists talking abouttheir American tour [which] turns outto be a dozen dates. That's not goingto do it. We need to get back to theProtestant work ethic and Americarepays that. American audiences arevery perceptive and if they see anartist who is prepared to engage withthem, they respond, they're interest-ed." He regards American fans of actssuch as "Korn and Limp Bizkit" as the"right audience for U2" and says thatU2 always target a young audience.

What is interesting is whether therenewed success of a long-term actlike U2 will influence A&R policiesaway from the quick return on invest-ment that the boy and girl bandsoffer. "I'm sure there's a reaction tak-ing place under the radar even now,"believes McGuinness. "I can't imaginethis current phenomenon of synthetic, agency -written pop continuing indefi-nitely. It's got a lot to do with thedemographic of the young population, but I'm sure there are a lot of kidswho want to be musicians witnessingthis and thinking 'Oh, my God, howawful, let's get a real group together'.

"I'm sure those bands are formingin the schools and in the garages of theworld and we'll see them materialisein a couple of years. The one thing youalways know about pop music is thatevery action produces a reaction.Something's coming, and it can't comequick enough for me anyway."

Career highlightsFor the manager of one of the world'sbiggest acts for the past two decades, career highlights must read as sensa-tionally as Elton John's shopping list, but Paul McGuinness considers U2'scurrent success to be the pinnacle"because we had a record at numberone in 31 countries. They're all aged40 now-I'm about to turn 50-[and]we've all been doing it for over 20years [so] it's a bit like being one ofthose Olympic athletes who defy

MAKING MUSIC

everyone-a little like the SteveRedgrave phenomenon-and keepcoming back and winning. And ifthere's a title, we're hanging onto it.We're certainly not going to hand itover to some young whippersnapperwho think they're entitled."

What has made his job easier thanthose enjoyed by other managers is"there are very few great artists and it's obviously much more fun to man-age a great artist rather than one thatisn't-or somebody who makes greatrecords [but] can't work within agroup," McGuinness says. "It's veryhard and difficult to run the complexrelationships that exist within aband-everyone really has to con-tribute and sacrifice a lot of ego andtime to making relationships like that

equation into exciting pop music. Those artists are still coming along. What they also need is somebody likeme who understands that it's no goodbeing good at the music if you're bad atthe business. And in that respect U2have always been very interested inthe business and aware that unlessyou took charge of your own business, you wouldn't succeed in getting yourmusic out in the way you want."

Givers and takersPaul McGuinness sums up his timewith U2 as "20 years of intense activ-ity. There are givers and there aretakers and it's very clear that U2 willhave put more into the world thanthey took out in musical and culturalbut also in political terms. One of the

Max Hole, senior VP marketing and A&R,

work, they don't just happen. Workingat those relationships and working atgetting music out is very satisfying.

"The great artists in rock'n'rollwere the ones who were intuitivelyable to mix politics and art and com-merce and advertising and fashion andstyle and sex and resolve that giant

things that has, to some extent, bedevilled this record is the fact thatBono has been almost employed byJubilee 2000 for most of the last year, campaigning on their behalf. That'staken up a lot of time, and sometimesthat's been a bit frustrating for theother guys. But we've all supported

that and he naturally enough pointsout that it is the experience of doingstuff like that that informs what hewrites about."

The final question for U2's manag-er has to be how long can his groupcontinue at this level. "The cliché usedto be that pop music was young peo-ple's music. That's obviously not true. It's part of the culture in a veryemphatic way and in a worldwidesense, and I don't think that's going tochange," he says. "They work hardernow than they ever did and they'remaking their best music now. I thinkif they found they were repeatingthemselves or plateauing, they'd prob-ably want to stop. But it is the com-petitiveness and also the satisfactionthey get from doing great work andthat I get from managing the process. That's the best thing."

What they say about himSony Music Europe president PaulBurger, who has been involved withMcGuinness since his Sony Music UKdays after signing Principle Manage-ment -managed Paddy Casey, praiseshis skills. "We were absolutely thrilledwhen Paul was interested in gettinginvolved with Paddy (Casey)," he says."He is one of the all time great man-agers. He has the ability to combine realcreativity with a penetrating focus andunderstanding of the artist and have aninstinctive vision in knowing what mar-kets to pursue in building a long termcareer. I just wish that he had broughtSony Music half a dozen more acts!"

Universal Music International senior vicepresident, marketing and A&R, MaxHole, recalls that amid the general hos-tility, McGuinness was one of the fewwho, at the time of the merger ofPolyGram and Universal, gave the newteam the benefit of the doubt.

Hole's team and McGuinness havefully collaborated on the release of AllThat You Can't Leave Behind, and Holehas nothing but praise for McGuinness, who he calls "a great pro."

"Working with Paul, Sheila andPrinciple Management is a close andrewarding partnership. Long before therecording of All That You Can't LeaveBehind was finished, we were meeting inDublin to plan further world dominationfor U2. To quote Paul, he likes to 'infiltrate'large corporations and his policy worksas we all feel integrated in the decision -making process. He makes the groupvery available and as such everyone atUniversal will go that 'extra yard' to makethe album the huge success it alreadyis."

ARTISTS & MUSIC

GROOvESby Gary Smith

A FURTHER 15 MINUTES OF FAMEAfter a career that includes working with Kraftwerk, co -writing classics like The Model, The Robot and Tour deFrance plus, more recently, collaborating with BernardSumner and Johnny Marr, Karl Bartos is back with 15Minutes Of Fame (Orbit/Germany). Unsurprisingly per-haps, the track sounds very much like classic late '70sKraftwerk crossed with latter period New Order. Bartos'vocal style is a slightly peppier version of the Kraftweriansemi -monologue approach while the tune itself is pleas-ingly minimalist but remains, nevertheless, a pop songwith a hook.

SILENCE IS BEAUTIFULLast year Dutch label ID&T was among the most consis-tent European imprints for trance music that also hadsome chance of crossover action. The trend continues withSvenson+Gielen's The Beauty Of Silence which, while it ispretty much a vocal -free zone, more than compensateswith some majestic chords and dreamy melodies. At timessounding almost classical, the track is stylistically ortho-dox. A strong dancefloor vote might, however, lift it intothe mainstream charts and Gielen's brooding, funkyEssential Dark Mix might well be able to do that.

JUDGE RULES IN FAVOURWith support from Judge Jules and all the usual UK sus-pects plus a place in the hearts of last summer's Ibizaravers, Safri Duo's Played -A -Live (The Bongo Song)(Universal/Denmark) is strong crossover material (seemain story). Trance roots are undercut by a ridiculouslyupful (as opposed to neo-classical and stately) keyboardmotif backed up by a wall of "big" percussion. The slightlyslower Spanish Fly mix is an altogether more musicalaffair with a strangely familiar chord sequence-CyndiLauper's Time After Time ??-fleshing out the early part ofthe production.

A SHINING DEBUTAlthough best known for its German -language rap acts,Hamburg label Yo Mama has for some time now been sign-ing a wider variety of artists. Talented reggae songsmithPatrice is the highest profile example so far, but MontanaChromeboy now look set to put the label firmly on theworld map. Debut album American Massage features acombination of classic soul riffs, clanky, over -the -top bass

and drum machine moments, asplash of Spanish guitar and, most importantly, strong songs.Influences range from '70s Funkand Steve Miller through to OtisRedding and beyond, shotthrough with a dose of the bluesand an underlying hip hop men-

tality. The result is a sound that owes something, but noteverything, to bigbeat. The songs are fairly conventionalin structure, (verse, chorus, verse, bridge, etc.), but theduo invariably manage to add a stylistic, lyrical or musicaltwist to a pleasantly familiar scenario. Particularly goodare the raucous, funky/rocky moves on Big Boy Pete, theutterly un-Kraftwerk-like Computer Love, Receiver's cool, brassy freshness, the Popcorn references on Way Downand the album's first single, the somewhat awkwardlytitled, Parliament -inspired and unignorable War On TheBullshit. All in all Montana Chromeboy are simply veryright for these times.

Omar delivers his Best By Farby Gareth Thomas

"Radio is very formatted and the album does-n't fit into a strict format," declares Naivemanaging director Frederic Rebet of Britishsigning Omar. "Obviously we want to break onthe radio, but there's no compromise-it's stillOmar."

Strong words, but the French label hasbeen buoyed by the critical acclaim that greet-ed the soul singer's fifth album Best By Far,released last November, but has failed so far todent sales and airplaycharts.

Rebet, who first met theUK artist when the labelwas created in 1998, is con-fident that Omar's originalretro funky, orchestral soulwill create its own genre."Mirwais, for example, did-n't fit into any format, butmore than six or eightmonths after its releaseNaive Song is being playedheavily in the UK andFrance. I'm sure with Omarit will be the same."

Naive's partner in theUK is Oyster Music, whoseA&R director Chris Cookagrees it will not be a fly-by-night record. "In some waysit's better to have a quality album that sellsover time through word-of-mouth," he says."That happens with a lot of soul records thatwork outside the mainstream."

Omar's biggest hit to date was the sophisti-cated, sultry There's Nothing Like Thisreleased in 1990 on his father's label, KongoRecords. Now signed to Naive, the classically -trained artist collaborates on his current self -produced album with UK R&B chick Kele LeRoc on the retro-funky Come On and nu soul

diva Erykah Badu on Be Thankful (For WhatYou've Got), a reworking of William DeVaughan's '70s soul cut. A fan of film scoresand composers like Lalo Schifrin, Omarrecasts John Barry's theme from MidnightCowboy on In The Morning.

Omar's last single, Something Real wasreleased on October 23 and has been played onlocal and regional radio in France and special-ist stations in the UK, including London -basedinternet radio station Sou124-7. "SomethingReal definitely fits our format," says co-

founder Alex James. "Butwe also play tracks off thealbum like Essensual, which is a killer cut. As faras I'm concerned, Best ByFar is no exaggeration."The station has also noticeda lot of interest in Omarcoming from the US, wherethe artist has cult statusand numbers among hisadmirers D'Angelo, ErykahBadu and Stevie Wonder, who collaborated on his lastalbum, This Is Not A LoveSong.

Omar's next single BeThankful (For What You'veGot) has been the cause ofsome controversy. Omaroriginally cut a version with

Erykah Badu, but Kedar Massenburg, presi-dent of Badu's label, Motown, vetoed plans forits insertion on her album. Massenburg even-tually greenlighted the song, but not beforeOmar had recorded a second version withAngie Stone which Naive is releasing inMarch. Before then, Omar plays five nights atLondon's Jazz Café in February. "He's a semi-nal British soul artist and we produce few ofthat calibre," concludes Oyster Music's ChrisCook. "He's massively underrated."

Safri Duo's classical tale of rags -to -richesby Charles Ferro

Safri Duo are another dance act who have usedIbiza as a breaking ground. But what setsthem apart from their peers is their classicalbackground, as the duo's manager MichaelGuldhammer explains. "They were used to theRoyal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House,Lincoln Center, and didn't know much aboutthe club world when we tookthem to Ibiza in Septemberfor an appearance,"Guldhammer chuckles. "Itwas a real culture shock-they went on stage and thecrowd went berserk. That waswhen they realised they'd cre-ated a big hit."

The hit was Played -A -Live(The Bongo Song) which com-bines percussion with elec-tronica on one of the mostoriginal dance tracks to date. The song, released throughUniversal, has enjoyed arecord breaking 13 -week runat the top of the Danish dance chart, and hitnumber one on the UK club chart in mid -December as well as populating the upperreaches of various European dance charts.

"We released 50,000 records on vinyl inIbiza this past summer, and DJs such as JudgeJules picked up on it-Jules has been their

biggest supporter," says Guldhammer, who setup his management company Goldmind aftersigning Safri Duo to Universal. "There was nolabel deal [at the time], so other labels werescrambling to sign them," he explains, addingthat DJs from the UK, Germany, Holland andother territories brought the track back hometo create a strong pan-European demand forthe record.

Guldhammer hooked theduo up with producer MichaelParsberg (Barcode Brothers,

-Me & My), "because they werevery tribal house and Parsbergblended this with trance," hesays. In November, UniversalDenmark released 5,000 unitsat home and they weresnapped up, putting the trackat the top of the sales chart fora week. The label has nowscheduled Played -A -Live for afull release in the UK onJanuary 22 and a week later inmore than 18 European territo-ries, followed by a relaunch at

home in mid -January_. Guldhammer says thatNew Zealand and Australia are committed, while Japan is doing some trial promo. SafriDuo hit the road for club gigs in the UK andHolland early this year followed by appearanceson -the -European festival circuit in the summerand a tour of the continent in the autumn.

Borderline judgements for Das HitradioBased in the Belgian town of Eupen but serving the so-called"Euregio" area encompassing the borders of Belgium,Holland and Germany, 100.5 Das Hitradio is the ultimatetrans -national local radio station. Marc Maes reports.

STATIONIN FOCUS

Launched in 1998, 100.5 DasHitradio was set up byGerman -language Belgianpublic broadcaster BRF in a

nique public -private part-nership with German commercialstation Radio Said.

"For many years BRFhad wanted to launch asecond station to comple-ment its full -service sta-tion," says Stephan Falk, marketing manager atDas Hitradio. After ini-tial discussions, both sta-tions teamed up to work

potential audience of 1.1 million.

Music firstWith the station's main targetaudience being spread over threecountries and three linguistic com-munities, Das Hitradio has under-standably opted for to a highlymusic -intensive format. "From dayone, we decided to go for a well-defined audience [25-49 age group]and stick to a tight Hot AC formatfeaturing the biggest hits from the'90s and the best of today's charts,"says head of programming OliverLaven.

"By sticking strictly to our format we havebeen able to give Das Hitradio a veryrecognisable profile."

- Olivier Laven, head of programming, 100.5 Das Hitradio

on the project, initially code -namedRadio 3000.

A separate commercial company, registered in Belgium, was set upto control the new station, withBRF's commercial and sales housearm BRF Media holding 51% of theshares, and Radio Salu the remain-ing 49%. But although DasHitradio is based in the publicbroadcaster's building, the stationdoes not receive any public moneyand, like any other commercialradio station, has to make a profitvia the sale of airtime. "But it goeswithout saying that the BRF is giv-ing us all possible logistical sup-port, while research and program-ming support comes from RadioSalti," says Falk.

The new station's offices and stu-dios are located at the BRF's head-quarters at Eupen, in the German-speaking part of Belgium.Broadcasting both on a terrestrialfrequency (100.5 FM) and via cable,100.5 Das Hitradio's transmissionarea covers cities such as Aachen,Heinsberg, MOnchengladbach,Liege and Maastricht, with a total

has ensured us a unique place inthe Euregio market," says Laven.

Music research is conducted byphone every fortnight, and there isalso a daily new release slot enti-tled Frisch Gepresst. Linguistically

the station has opted to use theGerman language. "We estimatethat about 90% of our audience isGerman," says Falk.

In its two years on the air, 100.5Das Hitradio has been able to estab-lish itself as one of the leading com-mercial stations in Nordrhein-

Westfalen, on a par with rivals suchas Radio Aachen and Antenne AC."Das Hitradio is complementary toBRF's full service format withoutcompeting with [Saarbracken based]Radio Salu," explains Falk. "But wedo organise similar promotions toSalii, and that has increased sinceHarald Gehrung, who was formerlyhead of promotions at Salti, wasappointed managing director of DasHitradio."

Aside from his programmingduties, Laven is also 100.5 DasHitradio's main on -air personality, hosting the weekday 06.00-10.00breakfast show. "We believe it is

essential that this show is close to theneeds and interests of our audience inthat daypart," he says. "Our audienceis very mobile-most people drive upto 50 km to their job and we are veryaware of this. Apart from the regulartraffic bulletins we also have an itemcalled Blitzreporter in which driversreport on locations of speed controlsites. We get 50 to 60 reports everyday!"

Keeping up appearancesAside from concert sponsorshipsand cross -promotions with dailynewspaper Aachener Zeitung, DasHitradio is highly visible on bill-board and bus stop posters in themain cities such as Aachen, and viaads in the printed media.

Recent promotions include afour week competition in whichmobile phones were hidden nearbus stops and shopping areas inthe station's transmission area."Twice a day we give the audienceclues. The finder gets to keep thephone," explains Laven.

Das Hitradio has concluded sub-scription deals with the mainGerman record companies and dis-tributors, whereby the station paysan annual lump sum to the recordcompanies and gets serviced witheither limited products (just sin- gles) or a full service (albums, allgenres). Head of music SergeHeinen says he's generally happywith his music industry relation-ships. "Because we are mainly tar-geting the German audience, weare being Serviced by Germanrecord companies," he says. "Butwe also get local Belgian productmailed to us. We send out feedback

With national advertising occu-pying three blocs per hour between06.00 and 18.00, regional and localcommercials are only aired after

Although no figures have beenmade public, Falk says the share-holders remain confident about theviability of the Das Radio project, depite the complexities of its tre-ans-national nature. PHOENIXIF I EVER FEEL BETTER(Virgin/Sou rce)Release date: January 22 (UK),If 1 Ever Feel Better is the secondsingle from Paris -based Phoenix'seclectic debut album United, which came out across Europe on

June 12 last year. It is also one of the most upbeatsongs off the album with an irresistible rhythmand funky texture that makes it perfect for danceand mainstream clubs. Sam Zniber, schedulingdirector for French dance network Fun Radio, says that although the track is not specifically adance record, it has several key ingredients thatcatch the right vibes. "They have a great '80ssound and we get more and more tracks from tech -no or electronica acts which are rooted in the '80s,"Zniber says. "I wouldn't be surprised to see in thenext year a massive '80s revival, borrowing fromthe chic and classy sound of Hall & Oaths, SoftCell's Tainted Love, Madonna's early hits orFrankie Goes to Hollywood. But it will be pack-aged in a way which will appeal to today's youth. After all, these past years, youngsters havegrooved to the sound of the '70s without evennoticing." MH

ALL SAINTSALL HOOKED OF(London Records)International releasedate: February 5,Sassy R&B track AllHooked Up follows thehuge radio successes ofPure Shores and Black

Coffee and is the third single off the girls' secondalbum Saints and Sinners, released last October. To date, mostly UK stations have picked up thetrack but, as All Saints have achieved a near"must -play" status on European mainstreamradio with hits like Never Ever, Pure Shores andBlack Coffee, the rest of Europe is sure to follow.Scandinavian programmers are among the firstto pick up on the new track outside of the UK,including Ville Vilen, head of music at CHR sta-tion YLE Radiomafia in Finland. "All Saints' lat-est album is perfect for our station's sound,"Vilen says. "It's floating, stylish and laid-back.All Hooked Up has a hook you'll get slowly, which makes it playable for a long time." Pro-gramme director at Radio ABC in Denmark,Morten Bach, has not yet received the singlefrom the Danish label, but is already consideringputting it on high rotation at the next playlistmeeting. "I think it's a very exciting number," hesays. "It's happier and more interesting thanBlack Coffee." SSD

DANCE

DANCE BEATThe weekly dance (hart comment by Harold Roth

It's oh so quiet in the world of dance thisweek. While Europe recovers from the seem-ingly endless Christmas and New Year par-ties, the dance traxx experiences a hangoveras well, with no new songs entering tte chart.

However, that's not to say that everything'sstatic. German Ratty's Sun-rise (Here I Am) (Kontor)makes an impressive jumpfrom 100 to 20. Already a big-gie at home, the track hasbenefitted from a rush releaseto UK deejays which in turnhas led to the track to debut-ing in the UK club chart on

the indie Neo Records imprint. In the past few years, Scandinavia has

been a trustworthy deliverer of material forthe dance floors. The likes of Sweden's Dr.Alban and Denmark's Aqua preceeded 2000'sFinnish acts Darude and Bomfunk MC's. Now,Danish act Safri Duo, labelmates withSonique on Serious, jump to eight from 33with Played -A -Lice. The cut has spent sometime in its home dance chart and now debutsin Sweden and Norway.

Fuelled by a high entry on the Germanchart, Public Domain's Operation Blade(Slinky) slices into the top 10 (from 31 to six). The track is also new in Norway and it con-tinues to burn the floor at home in the UK,where its roots lie in the club called Slinky.

Milk & Sugar's Higher & Higher (OceanTrax/Milk&Sugar) is finally starting to live upto its title. Having originally only charted inItaly for short time a while back, it has sud-denly surged from 500 to 43, driven on bydance chart action in Germany.

Daft Punk's One More Time (Labels/Virgin)has stood the test of Christmas to hold thenumber one spot for the fifth consecutive week.

Next week's chart may see the entry of TheHorrorist's One Night In NYC, a track licensedby German indie Superstar Recordings fromThings To Come. Its support is currently limit-ed to dance charts in Germany but expect it tocross borders very soon.

Industry mourns Rudi Gassner continued from page 3

posts with Bertelsmann publisherGruner + Jahr and with the compa-ny's European TV and film division. Both he and Bahlmann are on theBertelsmann board.

Friends and colleagues paid trib-ute to the deceased music executiveat a funeral service held on January4 in Greenwich, Connecticut in theUS. "Personally, I have lost a greatfriend. IFPI has lost a great support- er, and the worldwide recordingindustry has lost a giant," said JayBerman, chairman and CEO of inter-national labels' federation IFPI.

Gassner died of a heart attackat his German vacation home inSamerberg. He collapsed whiletaking a break from a morning jogwith his wife. The couple hadstopped in a church to get a look atits Christmas tree, which wasbeing decorated by a priest whenGassner collapsed in his wife'sarms, according to Susan Lietz, who had handled public relationsduties for Gassner at BMG Inter-national and had recently workedwith him as a consultant.

He is survived by his wife,Brooke Gassner, four children,Claudia, Beatrice, Alexandra, andMaximilian, as well as his mother,Mathilde Gassner.

After a career as a professionalfootballer, Gassner started a 31 -yearlong stint in the music industry. Hespent 18 years with PolyGrambefore founding BMG Entertain-ment International in 1987 and

serving as the division's presidentand CEO until its dissolution inFebruary 2000. In 1999, BMG Inter-national accounted for over 50% ofBMG's overall $4.6 billion business.

He left BMG in January 2000following disagreements withBMG president Strauss Zelnick onsome key issues. He started a newlife as "a free agent," serving aschairman of the advisory board ofEdel Music and working with newmedia companies.

In November, after a 10 -monthhiatus, he finally got the job hehad be expecting for the previous10 years when he was appointedpresident of BMG, replacing Zel-nick. He also became a member ofthe executive board of BMG's par-ent company Bertelsmann.

At that time, Gassner was in abuoyant mood. He told M&M how"good it feels to be back doing what Ilike the most." Not short of projectsfor the company, he planned "tofocus on music-my goal is toimprove the performances of thecompany in all areas, especially inA&R, artist development, marketingand profitability," and joked about"all the things that need to be done."

Rudi Gassner served as a memberof the board of the IFPI from 1989 to2000. He was recently awarded theIFPI medal "for outstanding serviceto the international recording indus-try." The medal will be presented tohis wife Brooke in a memorial ser-vice in Munich on January 15.

Gassner: the tributesThomas Middelhoff, chairman and CEO, Bertelsmann:"Rudi Gassner's death is a tragic loss for all of us. All of Bertelsmanngrieve for the loss of one of our top managers, a man who was deeplyappreciated for his personal warmth as well. Rudi Gassner was a success-ful media businessman and a great beacon of hope for us all as we facethe necessary development and reorganisation of our music division."

Paul Russell, chairman, Sony Music Europe:"Naturally, over a number of years, most of my contact with Rudi wasat IFPI board meetings. He was highly intelligent and very incisive-always prepared to make the difficult and tough decisions. Mostimportantly he was constant in putting the interests of the industryforemost, leaving behind any competitive company baggage. In thatregard he had the considerable respect of his colleagues and gave IFPIgreat focus and leadership. His untimely death will be a great loss notonly to BMG but also to the entire music industry."

Thomas M. Stein, president, GSA and Eastern Europe, BMG Enter-tainment:"Rudi's death has shocked us all. We are not only losing an alwayshelpful and reliable friend, but a very dear colleague. In his job healways focused on building up domestic talents and gave them aninternational marketing push. His motto of 'Act local, think global' isstill a firm part of BMG's company philosophy. We will continue hiswish to actively and dynamically implement changes, and we willremember him with great respect and gratitude."

Wolf D. Gramatke, chairman of the German IFPI and non-execu-tive chairman, Universal Music Germany:"His death is one of the big tragedies of the industry. Gassner was atthe peak of his dreams and leaves a lot of tasks unfulfilled."

Michael Haentjes, CEO, Edel Music:"His incredible competence and his international reputation had a biginfluence on his work at our advisory board. Even though he worked forus for only a few months until beginning of December, he helped a lot inthe development of our company. We are losing a very caring partnerand friend. I will certainly miss the close daily contact with him."

Leproux new RTL chief in France continued from page 3

Duhamel was replaced on Janu-ary 2 by Robin Leproux. Aged 41,Leprodx was previously vice-presi-dent of the board of French musicTV channel M6, a business in whichthe RTL Group has a 41% stake. Hestarted his career in the musicindustry, working for PolyGram.

Leproux will work with a "con-trollin,g committee" set up at theend of December (M&M Hotline,December 30) following the depar-ture of Duhamel, to oversee RTL'sFrench radio interests. It will bepresided over by RTL Group's headof the radio and TV Jean -Charlesde Keyser, and also features RTL'spresident Remy Sautter and vice-president Philippe Labro in addi-tion to Leproux, whose briefincludes establishing better syner-gy between RTL Group's radio andTV properties in France.

Observers are keen to point outthat Leproux's appointment andthe creation of the committeemark the end of the traditionalautonomy enjoyed by RTL inFrance and is a clear sign that theRTL Group is now in charge.

A source at RTL Group tellsM&M that what is underlined bythe changes is the creation of an

axis between radio and TV proper-ties in France, similar to what hasalready happened in southern Bel-gium, where De Keyser integratedAC station Bel-RTL and TVi. "Thiscould well be the model forFrance," says the source. "Every-where we have a similar footprintbetween radio and TV, so it seemslogical to build stronger linksBesides, RTL could certainly dowith a [promotional] boost."

Leproux, who has no previousexperience in radio, will be facedwith the hard task of continuingthe policy of rejuvenation at full -service RTL in an environmentwhere competitors, especiallyNRJ, are closing the gap onFrance's historic market -leader.

"Robin Leproux will put at theservice of RTL Group's radio affili-ates his successful experience inteam management and in thedevelopment of new activities,"says the company in a statement. It is understood that Leproux willconcentrate mainly on operationalmanagement and will be appoint-ing a new programme manager forRTL. Duhamel previously heldboth positions at the full -servicestation.

Sony Music act JenniferLopez, whose new album J.Lois released in Europe on Jan-uary 22, was recently pre-sented by Sony executiveswith an IFPI PlatinumEurope award in recognitionof over one million Europeansales of her previous album,On The 6. Pictured withLopez are Sony Music Europepresident Paul Burger (left)and Sony Music Europechairman Paul Russell.

Gassner a catalyst for Edel-Napster continued from page 3

have played a major role. "I haveheard that he was instrumental inthe deal and that he told Edel thatBertelsmann is going to be veryfriendly to you if you get on boardon the ground floor'," says AramSinnreich, New York -based musicanalyst at Internet research com-pany Jupiter Media Metrix.

Although BeCG, Bertelsmann'se -commerce subsidiary, declines toconfirm Gassner's precise role inthe Edel deal, a spokesman tellsMusic & Media that "It was well-known that he had very good con-tacts among the labels."

Under the agreement struck withNapster, Edel has agreed to offerexpertise and advice and has givenNapster access to its entire cata-logue once Napster's new subscrip-tion service commences. Like mostinternational recording groups, Edelis looking for a secure digital distrib-ution platform for the works of itsartists, who include Pharcyde anddance act Blumchen.

Napster is still developing thetechnology required to protectcopyright of works distributed via

its platform for when it starts oper-ating on a subscription basis. Onepossible model is to offer part of itsexisting service free in order toretain existing users' loyalty beforeasking for a $4.95 monthly fee.

In the meantime, Napster islaunching its Featured Music Pro-gram in February, for which Edel isoffering selected tracks. This ventureaims to help Napster users discovernew acts and new music, a conceptbroadly similar to what is currentlybeing offered by MP3.com, anotheronline service which the majors chal-lenged in the US courts last year.

Jupiter's Sinnreich argues thatEdel will benefit from the huge mar-keting potential of Napster's data-base of 50 million registered users, particularly since it's not party to themultinationals' current court caseagainst Napster.

Sinnreich believes the othermajors will work with Napster, butonly after reaching a financial set-tlement as they did with MP3.com,and providing that Bertelsmanndoes not retain control. "They willwant an equal share," he predicts.
