Lyrics:

The title song appears over head credits in a 1968 version with John Waters and Kim Gyngell in The Chosen Ones, and near the end performed by Guy Pearce’s synth band Video Rodney.

The opening version is sung in a kind of folk instrumental style, in the manner of a Byrds or a Graham Nash; the later version is done in the kind of Countdown synth sound style fashionable in the 1980s.

Where have you been all my life?Am I what you’ve been looking for? What are you waiting for?Touch me and I am yoursI’ve held my breath long enough

Where have you been all my life?My heart has been pounding all nightI live in front of you (end credits version: I’m billed in front of you)Now do our dreams come trueI really think that they willThe shot in the night, the star in the skyDraws us together (‘together’ is drawn out)How does it feelIt feels like Heaven Tonight ...Love is so freeOh heaven tonightVictory won Stealing the prizePlaying to winWe got stars in our eyes (‘eyes’ is very drawn out)

(musical interlude, 60s guitar sound in head credits)

We’ve been alone all our livesHiding the way that we feelWhether I live or die Nothing can make me cryThe time is right, and so am I …Tomorrow begins with tonightYesterday’s fading from sightThe future is ours to takeGive this world a shakeTake this song, then hold on tightThe shot in the night, the star in the sky (end credits: a star in the sky)Draws us together (‘together’ is drawn out)

(end version extended guitar solo here)

How does it feelIt feels like Heaven Tonight ...Love is so freeOh heaven tonightVictory wonStealing the prizePlaying to winWe had stars in our eyes (‘we’ve got’ in end version)How does it feelTo feel like heaven tonight?Love is so freeOh heaven tonightVictory wonStealing the prize (end credits: we’re stealing the prize)

A Warren Zevon song, Johnny Strikes Up The Band, runs over the tail credits. Lyrics as they are heard in the film:

Composer John Capek:

Composer John Capek had previously been engaged to work with Frank Howson on the feature film Backstage, starring Laura Branigan, but a dispute with executive producer Geoff Burrowes saw them both exit that film. However they came together again to work on Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and did later shows together, such as What the Moon Saw.

Capek had a wiki here, and his personal website here, and that contained this CV:

The two main bands in action in the film:

Page 17: Music John Capek - Ozmovies · Music John Capek (Cast) The Chosen Ones John Waters Kim Gyngell Chris Cassidy Keith Elliott The Johnny Dysart Bands John Waters Bobby Bright Tony Naylor

The Chosen Ones band do their fey impression of soft 1960s folk rock pop over the opening credits, with a montage of newsreel footage that reflects the times, and also covers the fictional rise and fall of the band. (See this site’s wombat gallery for jpgs).

The two main bands that appear in the drama are John Waters’ pub band, performing as The Johnny Dysart Band, and Guy Pearce’s Video Rodney band. Pearce’s character is presented as organised - there’s even a computer spread sheet showing him calculating the band’s financials - and there’s a contrast between the relatively sparse crowds in the pub where Waters performs, against the hipper and younger crowd following Pearce’s band.

Waters scores a pub heckler, Pearce is shown working hard with his band in the studio, and is then given the big final number in front of an industry/media crowd, with the chance to work his dad’s big 1968 Heaven Tonight hit into something suitable for Molly Meldrum’s ears.
