Front Covers

Page 6: Music Magazine Conventions

Analysis of Front Covers The three front pages above all are very similar and have lots in common. Firstly,

they are all the same genre of Pop. The three magazines also all contain a masthead at the top of the page in bold white on quite a dark background

which makes it stand out to the audience and grabs their attention. Also, they all have a main image and headline of the artist in the middle of the front cover.

These main images show the artist that is featured in the magazine and therefore, if you like the artist you are more likely to buy the music magazine.

With the main features, all magazines also include smaller features in the magazine and the 'Q' magazine has a smaller image at the bottom as well. These smaller features tell the audience what they are going to find inside. Moreover, all three pop magazines have the date, the price and the barcode, these are all

features that are very important on the magazine so the reader knows the price and date to buy it and so you can scan to buy it with the barcode. These can be

found on every music magazine and is conventional.

Contents

Page 11: Music Magazine Conventions

Analysis of ContentsThe three contents pages above all have similarities in them and use typical conventions. They all have a masthead at the top of the page which states ‘Contents' on the magazine 'Billboard' and 'Q‘, this clearly states what this page contains so the audience know. However, the magazine 'NME' states 'NME THIS WEEK' for its masthead which draws the audience’s attention. Additionally, they all have main images which tend to be in the middle or just to the right side. They also have smaller images around this which display the smaller features in the magazine. Also, they all tend to have a similar layout as they have placed the image generally in the middle of the page and placed the features of the magazine around it. All magazine contents pages include separate sub-headings for separate sections in the magazine. For example, ‘features’, ‘news’ and ‘music’. Moreover, one thing different that the billboard magazine has is that on the contents page it tells you what is in the charts at that particular time which neither of the other two do on the contents page. Differently, NME magazine has a ‘band index’ at the right hand side, making it easier for the audience to find a particular band that they like. This is unconventional as I have not found this on any other music magazines whilst doing my research. NME also advertises it’s magazine subscription on this contents page as it states ‘Subscribe today for just £5.57 a month*. GO TO MAGAZINES DIRECT.COM/NMEPLUG’. This is not shown on my other two music magazines.

Double Page Spread

Page 16: Music Magazine Conventions

Analysis of Double Page SpreadThe three double page spreads all have similarities in the way they look and the conventions that they have. Firstly, they all have a masthead towards the top of the page however, they are in different fonts and sizes and in different places. The bottom two seem to have generally large mastheads however, the Lady Gaga double page spread has a lot more text and a smaller masthead. This is unconventional as having a larger masthead will attract the audiences attention more. Additionally, they all have a main image of the artist featured in this article which takes up at least half of the double page spread. This is to clearly show the artist featured and to draw the audience in. Also, the Cher Lloyd article and the Florence article both include a sub heading under the masthead however, the Lady Gaga article does not do this. The way that it is set out and the colours, black and white, make the article more formal than the other two articles. The Cher Lloyd double page spread uses a quote as the masthead which states ‘I was the girl parents blamed for their kids turning out wrong’. By using a quote, it appeals to the audience as they want to find out more about what she is saying and why she was blamed.
