MUSIC MAGAZINES

POPULARITY-THEN Music magazines were most popular

between 1970 and 1980. This was when music magazines were

trying new things to become different and connect with younger audiences.

These magazines usually contained the lyrics to the latest songs from the top of the charts.

They also usually contained pull out posters, picturing the latest pop/rock sensations.

POPULARITY-NOW Nowadays magazines for music are

dimming in sales but they still have a healthy amount of subscribers.

The magazine industry started to take a drop in sales due to the internet becoming more common and people could look online to find out about they’re favourite musicians.

GENRE DIFFERENCES There are lots of different genres of

music and their magazines show how different the style is. The next few slides will show some differences.

Rock

Country

Hip Hop

Pop

Reggae

Blues

Heavy Metal

Jazz

Opera

COUNTRY + CLASSIC ROCK

COUNTRY + CLASSIC ROCK We can see that the country music’s

magazine is calmer and doesn’t have as much on the front cover than the classic rock front cover.

There is the obvious denotation that classic rock is messy and a bit unorganised, which we can see on the front cover of the classical rock magazine as there is a lot of movement.

There is a lot more text on the classic rock magazine whereas the country magazine is quite simple with its layout.

JAZZ + REGGAE

JAZZ + REGGAE These two magazine front covers are quite

different. The Jazz magazine has a subtle colour scheme with dark colours whereas the Reggae magazine has a bright and vibrant colour scheme.

The moods of the two magazines are different too. The Jazz magazine shows quite a serious man close up with dark and serious colours. On the other hand the Reggae magazine has a man with a guitar that looks like he is practicing which gives off the impression that the mood is quite relaxed.

HIP HOP + OPERA

HIP HOP + OPERA Again these covers contrast a lot due to the colours

and style used. The fonts of the hip hop are bold and stand out

whereas the Operas fonts are quite thin but remain plain and formal.

The focus of the Opera magazine is on the simple image of the woman (Opera Singer) this is because there isn’t much movement in this picture with a plain black background. On the other hand the Hip Hop magazine has a lot of movement with a musician in the foreground and a colourful yet blurry background and a lot of text with vibrant colours. There is a focus on the musician in the foreground but the instant impression is that there is a lot going on in this magazine.
