Music Performance ¾ Instrumental Performance ¾ Jazz Performance Concentrations The Bachelor of Music in Performance (B.M.P.) is a professional degree which focuses on intensive work in music allied with competence in an area of specialization–voice, piano, or instrumental (including all instruments), while being supported by a program in general studies. Majors within this degree learn the various professional responsibilities of the career musician, which include technical competence, a broad knowledge of music and music literature, the ability to integrate musical knowledge and skills, sensitivity to musical styles, and an insight into the role of music in intellectual and cultural life. Students preparing for careers as professional artists, performers, studio educators, church musicians, or for graduate school admission often choose the Bachelor of Music in Performance degree. About the Major Music | College of Arts and Humanities Careers Students graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Performance are employed in a wide range of professions including: arrangers, collaborative pianists, composers, conductors, copyists or transcribers, copyright consultants, cruise ship entertainers, digital score recordists, military band performers, music engravers, musicians for game development, musical theater performers, orchestrators, performers, playback singers, recruiters, religious music performers, score coordinators, song contractors, songwriters, vocal coaches, and vocal contractors. The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredits all degree programs offered with Shepherd University’s Department of Music. NASM, founded in 1924, is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges and universities with approximately 647 accredited institutional members. It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials.     Many Shepherd music graduates have gone on to prestigious graduate schools of music including Peabody Conservatory, Northwestern University, Ithaca College, University of Rochester’s the Eastman School, Arizona State University, and Manhattan School of Music. Music graduates have starred on Broadway and world tours, become recording artists, and have joined nationally known ensembles including the United States Navy Band and the Sea Chanters.
