Radio Lobby GroupPrivate broadcasters from acrossEurope have welcomed the settingup of the Association of Euro-pean Radio (AER), a pan-European lobby group for com-mercial radio interests (see frontPage).
In Rome, Bruno Ployer, pro-gramme director at leading com-mercial station DimensionSuono, welcomes the initiative inprinciple However he will notcommit himself to membership ofsuch a body until he has seen adetailed policy programme and is"certain of the organisation'spolitical colours".
Ployer. "If they are to attemptnegotiation at a national level
they must be aware of totally dif-ferent climates from country tocountry. In Italy for example theaims and needs of the smallprivate stations (within Federradio) could be seen to clash*viththose of the private networks. I
would be interested to see howthey deal with this problem:'
Mike Haas, programme direc-tor at West Germany's leadingstatewide private Antenne Bayern, hopes the AER will include na-tional lobby group Bundesver-band Fur Label and Satellite(BKS): "It is widely representativeand has proved most effective ona national level. The radio in-dustry keeps on expanding so theneed for such a Europe -wideorganisation is obvious. I hopethis new organisation can rise tothe challenge'
by Cho, FullerBrian West, director of the
UK's Association Of Indepen-dent Radio Contractors (AIRC),says: "We are very disappointedthat previous attempts to organisean effective lobby have come tonothing, and we would be mostinterested in discussing member-ship of this new body.Though we em members of theEBU (via the IBA), it remainsdominated by the public broad-casters and in no way acts as aneffective negotiator for commer-cial stations. UK & IRELANDKiss FM Says No ToChart MaterialLondon - Kiss FM, which wasawarded one of the two new Lon-don radio franchises last month, will not turn into a chart stationwhen it comes on air. Much of thedance music Kiss FM played as apirate station has since gainedconsiderable chart popularity.
Managing director GordonMcNamee says Kiss FM will con-tinue to play "the newest andmost innovative examples of con-temporary dance music" and thestation will not be playing thedance music that is now in thecharts.
"We would have been plating ittwo months ago. We will concen-trate on new releases, imports anddemos, the kind of stuff CapitalRadio thinks is too radical until,of course, it gets into the charts. We will be creating a whole newway of listening to radio. We willcarry on ditching stuff when itcharts and concentrate on givingnew music an airing. Some of itmay not even have a record dealwhen we start playing id'
McNamee says the station'spresentation will be "professional
but not smooth", using up to 30DJs a week on their daytime, specialist and weekend shows. Many of the team that made KissFM London's most popular piratestation between 1985 and 1988,when it came voluntarily off theair, will be in the new squad.
Among the DJs are Jazzy B ofSoul II Soul, Jonathon More andMatt Black of Coldeut, RitchieRich and Tony Munson.
Grant Goddard, another longstanding member of the Kiss FMteam is programme controller. The daytime format will be a mix-ture of hip -hop, soul and reggaewith 50% of the output dedicatedto new releases. The station willalso run news reports at peaktimes and them will be a regularround up of the London dancescene and related lifestyle items.
The second London franchisehas gone to Melody Radio, ownedby the Hanson Trust, a multina-tional conglomerate The stationwill broadcast non-stop easylistening music with a minimumof talk. Output is aimed at theover -55s.
Yorkshire RadioYorkshire Radio has exceededforecasts with profits of £1.46million for the year endedSeptember 30, an increase of 76%on 1988 figures. Turnover for thecompany, which was floated onthe Unlisted Security Market ofthe London Stock Exchange inAugust was up 56% to£6.87 million.
During the year Yorkshireestablished three FM stations,Hallam, Pennine and Viking, anda Classic Gold AM service acrossits six transmitters in Yorkshireand Humberside. The latestJICRAR survey shows a 32% in-crease in audience figures, to13.85 million hours per week.
Chairman Michael Mallet saysthe demographically oriented pro-gramminng and wider area
Profits Up 76%coverage are being well rewardedin listenership: "This has yet to beconverted into revenue but we ex-pect this to happen as advertisersbecome more familiar with theconcept and other companies joinus in publishing seperate ratecards and audience figures for thedifferent services!'
Mallet says despite the retailsqueeze and slower revenuegrowth, radio is now seen as an ex-citing medium: "Considerablecreative talent is now being ap-plied to the making of effectiveradio advertisments. The key tocommercial success lies in givinglisteners what they want and wehave a dedicated, talented teamdetermined to ensure our pro-gramming satisfies, pleases andmoulds the tastes of our listeners!'
Hard Hitting Pop JournalismOn BBC Radio IBBC Radio 1 is launching a halfhour news programme every even-ing at 17.30 hours this month. Theprogramme, called 'News 90', willbe fronted by Sybil Ruscoe.
Ruscoe says the show aims tobring "a new hard edge to popjournalism:' She says researchshows listeners want to be kept upto date with what is going on:"News 90' will be backed by themassive BBC news gatheringoperation but the style will be
bright and lively as well as hardhitting:'
Richard Skinner is taking overas presenter of Radio l's Saturdayafternoon rock magazine. He hasbeen filling in on the programmefollowing the death of RogerScott in November. Bob Harris, presenter of the 'Old Grey WhistleTest' TV show in the 70s, takesover Scott's late night Sundayrock show.
Broadlands To TakeEast Anglian Radio Broadlandhas won the takeover bads forneighbouring Suffolk GroupRadio. Rival bidden Crown Com-munications and Mid AngliaRadio withdrew before Christmas

"Steady Progress" For"Steady progress" is how Liver-pool's Radio City managingdirector Terry Smith describes thestation's increased profits from £1.02 million to £ 1.34 million forthe year ended September 1989.Turnover for the year was up£ 490.000 to £ 4.33 million.
Smith says the station's growthreflects the trends on Merseyside, one of the country's mosteconomically depressed areas.
"We have had a shift towardslocal advertising over the past twoyears and the balance is now near-ly 50/50 which is about right;' ex-plains Smith.
"Many local advertisers arenow with us for up to 40 weeks ayear which has strengthened ourlocal identity and helps to protectus from the ups and downs of na-tional advertising:'
Radio City split frequencies in
Liverpool'sOctober, launching its City TalkAM cession It is the first indepeandent radio (IR) station to split bet-ween music and talk, andalthough no official audienceresearch will be conducted beforeJanuary, the station's initial feed-back indicates that both channelsare doing well
"We spent eight monthspreparing for the split anddeliberately created a hole for the
Radio CityAM service in our FM programm-ing;' says head of music TonyMcKenzie
"The best proof that we havegot it right is that our competitorsare trying to copy our FM format. But they are complicating oursimple formula and gettingthemselves in a mess:'
UK & 'IRELANDRadio Revenue Tops
£ 138 MillionIndependent radio revenue rose16% to 138.4 million for theyear ending 30 September, accor-ding to figures from the Associa-tion of Independent Radio Con-tractors (AIRC). The July toSeptember quarter revenue was anall-time record of £ 36.2 million.
AIRC director Brian West saysthe increase is a sign of radio'scontinuing growth: "The year onyear growth is exactly as we
forecast at the beginning of 1989and again radio did comfortablybetter than all other media!'
However, West says the currentreduction in UK retail sales andthe knock on effect on advertisingwill make conditions morechallenging this year. But he isconfident radio will maintain itsstrong position.
"The remarkable advanceradio has made over the past fouryears, increasing revenue by 86%,will give us the platform fromwhich we will continue to out-perform other media in the tightermarket expected over the next yearor so:' 0

EMI Electrola To Split In ThreeCologne -based EMI Electrola willsplit into three labels, each withtheir own distribution system, asfrom April. The new companies, each with their own specialityrepertoire, will be headed by long-time EMI managers.
The new EMI, which will repre-sent Anglo-American product in-cluding the Capitol, EMI USA,EMI UK and SBK labels, will beheaded by Erwin Bach.
Electrola will become the na-tional label, representing localsignings, some continental artistsand the IRS label. "This new con-centration on local talent;'believes EMI MD Helmut Fest,"shows we have enough con-fidence in the German musicscene to dedicate a company, withits own distribution system, to it:'Electrola will be headed byLothar Meinertzhagen, who hasbeen employed by the oganisationfor 12 years.
The third company, EMIClassics, will represent nationaland international classical reper-
toire Although EMI Electrola in-titiated a separate classicaldistribution system only sixmonths ago, under the restructur-ing the new company will alsohave its own marketing depart-ment. The classics company willbe headed by current marketingdirector, Bernhard Krajewski. Allthree MDs will report to Fest, who
continues as MD of the parentcompany.
Fest: "By splitting the companyinto three labels we believe eachwill be able to concentrate moreclosely on its own part of the totalrepertoire with the obvious aim ofsignificantly increasing ourmarket share!'

Bavarian Authorities Allow Advertisingby Peter IMoemle
The Bavarian media authoritywill make it easier for locaL sta-tions to use centrally producedprogrammes which include adver-tising. Only five of the state's 40or so local stations currently makea profit or break even. The rest areall losing money.
Until now the media authority
has only allowed the networks tocarry "mantel" programmeswhich contain no advertising. Many local politicians have beenreluctant to allow syndicated pro-gramming with ads on air becausethey believe it will reduce the com-munity element of the local radiostations.

Skyrock Moves To Fringe
Theatre SponsorshipSkyrock, one of France's leadingFM stations, has become the se-cond network to pull out of con-cert sponsorship. In late 1989 RTLannounced a similar pull outbecause of the increasing costs in-volved in backing concerts by na-tional and international acts.
Skyrock's programming direc-tor Laurent Bounneay says thestation has now stopped all in-volvement in music sponsoring.."Too high a percentage of con-certs were being mistakenly at-tributed to NRJ even when NRJhas nothing to do with the event. It would only he worthwhile con-tinuing if we were to sponsor ma-jor concerts, more important thanthose sponsored by NRJ, but thatis just not possible"
NRJ and Europe I are now theonly major radio stations to spon-sor concerts. In recent years thecost of sponsorship has risendramatically, partly due to NRJwhich, eager to promote its imageto a concert going public, outbidthe other stations for the sponsor-ship rights.
Instead Skyrock is turningtowards an area up to now rarelyexploited by radio, alternativecomedy and fringe theatre. Boun-near "We are sponsoring some
of the major names in cafe theatresuch as Smain and Les Vamps. Werecently sponsored their shows atthe Olympia in Paris.
"Cafe theatre is a perf.t vehi-cle for us, it corresponds to thespirit of Skyrock and attracts anaudience which corresponds toour target audience' The comedyduo Les Vamps will be presentinga newly introduced early morninghoroscope slot on Skyrock star-ting in January. A humorous'What's On TV' slot is also
planned.In addition Skyrock is moving
towards a new concentration oncharts at the programming level, dropping thematic programmessuch m Skyrock Connectionwhich concentrated on Americanmusic and replacing them withchart shows.
The new chart shows includethe weekly 'Top Dance' (Saturday19.30-22.00 hours) compiled frominformation supplied by discosaround France There is also anew listeners chart programme,Skyrock Top Rock (Sunday21.00-22.00 hours), based entirelyon listeners opinions. A listenerspanel selects the top discs to beplayed on the programme from aselection of 50 albums.

Epic Prepares For 1990by Emmanuel Legran0
CBS France has finished therestructuring programme begunin 1989 and divided its interna-tional catelogue between CBS,Epic and Squatt. The policy was drawn up by CBSpresident Henri de Bodinat inorder to increase the company'smarket share
Epic is now an independantstructure with its awn A&R,marketing and promo team. Itshares CBS' sales force with thetwo other labels. Christian Ract, who was appointed last Jane tohead the label says the Epic wayof working will not be the same asCBS.
'The project is different andthe team is different. We do nothave any historical backgroundand are starting horn scratch. This is exciting for the whole teambecause we have to give life to alabel and create our own image. Itis a collective effort:'
The Epic team totals around 15people, including marketing and
promotion manager Laurence LeNy, former promo manager ofBMG, and Philippe Puydaubywho heads A&R. FrederiqueVarenne has special responsibilityfor radio promotion.
The label will handle marketingand promotion for acts signed byEpic in the UK and US. Early1990 releases include GeorgeMichael, Basia, The Stranglersand Michael Jackson's Best Of.Ract says purely in terms of inter-national acts Epic has already hasa Ph market share in France. DeBodinat is aiming for an 8% to90o share with a strong Frenchcontent.
So far the French roster onlycomprises one major French act, veteran singer Michel Polnareffwho had a series of hits in the 60sand a successful comeback at theend of the 70s. An album byPolnareff is set for release in early1990. Ract says deals are currentlydiscussed with other acts.

Bruel, who is also an actor, hasalready had several minor hits. However his new single is current-ly high in the French charts andthe LP has already sold over200.000 copies. Both were backedby a low key radio campaign, con-centrating on AM and FM radio.Marketing manager PhilippeDesindes: "When the single wasfirst played to panels the responsewas so-so. However, the more thesingle was played on radio, themore the feed back was positive
"But what made us very happywas that success came withoutany big TV campaign. It was alsopart of our strategy to show thatBruel could sell without a bigmarketing drive He took a risk bychoosing to release a slow song asa first single and it paid off.' 0

Rete I05 Claims Success
For Johnny Rocketby David Stanslie.
Private network Rete 105 is claim-ing "100go success" for its newdaily afternoon rock show'Johnny Rocket'. Executive Eduar-do Hann says the station hasconducted its own small researchproject which shows 'JohnnyRocket' will soon take secondplace behind the network's topprogramme 'Night Express'.
Hann admits when Rete 105launched 'Johnny Rocket' with anall rock format them was a risk oflosing listeners. The show waslaunched at the beginning ofNovember with the emphasis onUS and European rock. The in-tention was to break the mould ofItalian afternoon pop radio whichconcentrates on pop and softrock, aimed at a broad target au-diences
However, although the fourhour shows am dominated bymusic from artists such as Bon
Jovi and Guns N' Roses, the net-work has not thrown cannon tothe wind completely. Hann: "Westill play some pop music, even byartists such as Madonna andSting!'
Meanwhile a new element hasbeen introduced to the successful'Night Express' show, which nowbroadcasts live interviews with in-ternational artists and major na-tional talent. CBS artists SpandauBallet were the first act featured.
Hazen, who claims an approx-imate 1.3 million listeners for
'Night Express', says its musiccontent is wide ranging. Up to50% of music played is
dominated by listeners' requests. The show is broadcast from Mon-day to Friday from 21.00 to 01.00hours and was voted top teenageprogramme in 1989 by themagazine Tatto Musica & Spar-_tarolo.

Privates Launch Campaign
Against BRT Ad Go -Ahead
Brussels - Flemish private stationshave launched a huge campaignagainst a goverment decision toallow state broadcaster BRTRadio to air adverts. The govern-ment gave the final go-ahead for anine year deal in late December.
BRT radio is expected to beginbroadcasting advertising inMarch. The exact terms of the ar-rangement will be finalised at theend of this month but the govern-ment has already made it cleareither BRT or a private firm couldact as the advertising company.Income from radio advertisingwill be used to support BRT TVwhich is facing strong competi-tion from private Flemish TV sta-tion VTM.
In the weeks leading up to thedecision over 180 private stationsjoined forces in a campaign
against the plan. The pressuregroup, Vlaamse AktiekomiteeLokale Radio (VALK), is sup-
ported by many leading Privates, including Radio Contact, RadioGo, Radio Antigoon and RadioExpress. Newspapers and VTMsupported the campaign with freeadvertising space.
Spokesman Johan Van Over-beke says the loss of income to theprivates will force many out ofbusiness: "It takes around Bfr 12million (US$ 300.000)to run agood local private radio station. The total advertising income for
all Flemish stations is less thanBfr 400 million (US$ 10 million).Them are some 424 officialprivates in Flanders, which addsup to an average of Bfr 1 millionper station.
"We are concentrating onpolitical lobbying to limit the
damage as much as possible, Butalready most of the bigger adver-tising companies have started
freezing their budgets. But I amconvinced purely local stationswill survive because they have lit-tle stational advertising!'
Another lobby, the VlaamseMedia Groep (VMG) also critismthe goverment decision. Co-
ordinator Patrick Herroelen saysthey are opposed to any advertis-ing during BRT's daily two hourregional programming, "Thiswould really endanger the
privates. Purely local outlets whoneed advertising to survive, notthe stations who use advertisingjust to make money".
However Stet de Grooeland, managing director of ad produc-tion studio Peeters Producties, sees it differently: "It is the net-works who will suffer and the.whole situation will be brought'back to where if belongs, withlocal stations airing local adver-tisments. And although we have40 private stations as clients, weare already producing for BRT.'
BRT Release Anniversary RecodBRT radio is releasing an albumof cover versions to celebrate the15th anniversary of its music pro-gramme 'Neem Jr Tijd En Zet JrAuroradio Aan' (Take It Easy
And 'Run On Your Car Stereo). The programme, originally laun-ched as a drive time show, waslater renamed 'Neem Se Tijd'.
The show, now hosted by Lutevan Duffel, has always been
followed by a very loyal audienceand BRT says the release of an an-niversary record is a way to thankthem. Producer Frank de Maeyer"When you take a look at the for-mat used in our daily show we usemainly an adult rock repertoirewith artists like Chris Rea, Sting,
Neil Young and Randy Newman."When we came up with the
idea to record an album ourselves, using Flemish artists, we decidedto have them performing theirversions of material whichfeatures regularly on ourplaylists:'
Several Flemish artists likeWim de Craene, Johan Verrnin-nen, Kris de Bruyne and AnnemieGils took part in the session,
recording songs by Elvis Costello,Bruce Springsteen, Tim Hardinand many others. It was recordedat the BRT's Studio -6 facilitiesand will be released at the end ofJanuary by BMG-Ariola.
Industry SoundsOut Local RadioThe Edison Stichting, a founda-tion run by leading members ofthe Dutch record industry, haslaunched a survey of local radiostations in Holland to rises theirinterest in a potential programmesupplied by the industry.
Questionnaires have been sentto some 200 local stations and thefoundation says it will decide inmid -February whether to set upan independent agency to compileand produce the show on behalfof the record companies.
The foundation believes the
scheme has several advantages.Local radios, currently severely
underfunded, would have an ad-
ditional programming source con-taining up-to-date product fromDutch suppliers. The pooled re-sources of the record industrywould ensure high productionstandards and attract a well-known Dutch DJ for the show.
From the industry side, the
foundation says, the programmewould allow companies to makeselected product available to theincreasingly popular local stationswhile, at the same time, cuttingdown on the risk of multiple -copying and piracy. The group alsosays MOR material and nationalproduct could be promoted veryeffectively through the scheme.
Derek And The Dirt Signed to CNR Belgium Publishing/CNR Manager/Lipstick Notes, Gent Debut Album 'Derek And

duced by Theo Ina and theband at Studio UptideZelzate.
CNR is promoting the albumwith competitions on privatestations: Radio Contact,Nostalgic and Antigoon (Ant-werp); Go (Ghent); Centraal(Hassell); Gemini (Kortrijk). There is also an in-storeposter campaign.
The band are not planning totour in the near future but

Derek And The Dirt are a four -piece unit featuring two veteransof the Belgian music scene, drum-mer Jan de Vos and bass playerMartin Alleman. They are joinedby vocalist Dirk 'Derek'Dhaenens and Pim Wolf onguitar.
The debut single Oh By TheWay was picked up by nationalradio and their performance aspromising new act on the recentDiamond Awards Belgian TVshow strengthened their reputa-tion. The follow up single, a

SCANDINAVIAPolyGram Promotion Initiative "Guarantees Airtime"
by Chr s Fuller
PolyGram Norway claims it is
achieving widespread radio a-posure for its artists by supplyinglocal stations with professionallyproduced programming 'pack-ages' on DAT cassette Head ofpromotion David Fishel saysmany stations are broadcastingsome or all of the packagematerial unedited.
Each package features a 12-15minute artist profile including in-terview and album selections, plusa 30 -minute open-ended interviewwith gaps for individual DJs to in-sert questions and 2-3 minutecompetitions offering albums asprizes. Specials alreadydistributed include Tears ForFears, Robin Beck and Zucchero, with others in production on Ar-thur Baker and Backstreet Girls.
David Fishel, "The feedback Iget from the stations indicatesmany air the material in full, andobviously we are delighted withthat. In effect the packagesguarantee airtime for our artists:'
All package material is produc-ed at Berggraf Studios in Oslo, us-ing professional voiceover artists,
and supplied on DAT cassette toPolyGram's own 'A -list' of 35local stations, which include thecapital's Radio Oslo, Tiondheim'sRadio Konrad, Stavanger's RadioVest, Haugesund's Radio 102 andBergen's P3. Fishel: "Aside fromnational radio (NRK NorskRikskringkasting) there are some226 stations in Norway and itwould be uneconomic to servicethem all:'
Though similar promotiontechniques are used in other ter-ritories, Fishel says the idea is newfor Norway, where commercialradio was introduced 20 monthsago and is still "generally under-valued by the record industry".He says stations welcome thematerial because "they have
limited economy and limitedcapacity. High -quality finishedprogramming is a bonus to
them".Gustav Alfheim, head of music
at Trondheim commerdal RadioKonrad says the station prefers tocarry out its own artist interviewsbut when this is not possible"high quality tapes like those sent

On Norway's west coast atHaugesund, Radio 102's head ofprogrammes Egil Houeland con-gratulates PolyGram on its "en-thusiastic approach. We are onlyreally interested in the material oninternational artists, we couldn't

Rusconi Group Buys Into Grupo 16
Italy's Rusconi Editore publishinggroup has paid Pta 5 billion (app.$43 million) for a 10%5 stake ofthe Spanish communicationscompany Grupo 16. The deal in-cludes Grupo I6's Madrid FMradio station Radio 16.
Grupo 16, which publishesnewspapers, fashion, leisure andeconomy magazines as well as
historical and political books, ob-tained five radio licenses in 1981.It went into partnership with SERand together they created the FMnetwork Radio Minuto Cadena16. After a parting of the ways in1986 SEE kept the rights to thename Radio Minuto and Grupo16 kept the Madrid frequency, renaming the station Radio 16.
Angel Mosteria, head of RadioIf, welcomes Rusconi's involve-ment and says it will speed up thegroups expansion plans in bothpublishing and radio. The groupis hoping to announce new Ven-tures in both fields early next year.
by fames Bourne
Given the cross border natureof the partnership Radio 16 is veryinterested in setting up in otherEuropean capital cities. Mosteriasays this may be done in conjunc-tion with third parties and addsthat talks for such projects werealready underway before RUS-
coni's purchase. However he says"strengthened by this union (withRusconi)we can take on biggerprojects than we could have singlehandedly".
Mosteria says only having fivelicenses in Spain is no handicapsince existing stations or networkscan be purchased and points outRusconj publishes youth andmusic magazines whereas Grupo16 does not. Ana Blanco, head ofmusic programming at the sta-tion, suggests the station is cur-rently more important to thegroup for prestige reasons thanfor any money it might make.
The station has a 24 hour musicformat with records picked from
an 85 strong weekly list ofSpanish and international singles,LPs and some golden oldies.Eight tracks a week are chosen aspowerplays. Records are played informula rotation for most of theday although the station hasspecialised black music and dancemusic shows.
The programme 'El Eseondite'features invited artists who are in-terviewed and chose theirfavourite tracks by other artistsmixed with their own bestmaterial. Radio 16 alsoretransmits the Cassey CassimAmerical Top 40 show onSundays.
Blanco admits the choice ofmaterial is highly personal but sheaims for mostly mainstream chartmaterial aimed at a listeneraround 25 years old. The station isnow one of Madrids top stationsafter suffering from listener con-fusion and identity problemsfollowing the split with SER. 0
Antenna 3 BeginsBroadcastingAntena 3, the radio group movinginto private TV, is the first of thethree new private TV groups inSpain to go on air, It began testcard transmissions on December15, followed by a month of trialprogramming from December 25.

SINGLE OF THE WEEKDel AmitriNothing Ever Happens - A&PIA classic true-life.stery in the mouldof Abba's The Day Before You Coneor Paul McCartney's Another Dayfrom a band that have been con-sistently excellent and just as con-sistently ignored. Like Deacon Blueand label -ma. Gun they are yet
another Scottish band with a knack for writing sharp, no-nonsense popsongs of considerable class. Taken from their excellent second LP Wak-
L ing Hours this is a band who can not be too highly recommended.
ALBUM OF THE WEEKThird BassThe Cactus Album - OBR/CBS
Imagine she snappiest hip hop spiced -sip wish 305 style an horns and chart -wise production values. That toughly is the sound of ThirdBass. Ina superficial way this LPbears a resemblance to De La Soul, the cut -ups and multi -cultural in-
fluences are similar to 3 lee, High& Rising but ultimately this is a muchmom straightforward record that takes De La Soul's ideas one stage fur-ther. Try Monte Hall and The Cactus.
Roth VoisineHelene -BMGFrroh
Stranger things have happened -but not often. A French Cana-dian with a record deal inFrance and Top 10 in theEurocharts. A strong ballad, reminiscent of Elton John's ear-ly material.
Edoardo Bennet° &Gianna NanniniUtiEstate Italians - %centerThe official song of the 1990World Cup is written and per-formed by two of Italy's mostpopular artists with help fromGiorgio Moroder. Stirring, sing -along stuff guaranteed to bringa tear to the eye of every Italian- not sure about the rest of theworld though.
Tanita TikaramWe Almost Got It Together - WEAA jolly song with an uptempofeel and catchy guitar riff. Ra-dio friendly and very pleasant.
Bolland & BollandThe Wall Came Tumbling Dorsi Wee
From the producers of Falcocomes an easy-going pop songwith an attractive chorus aboutthe Berlin Wall. Some chance ofcrossover success.
Laurie AndersonBaby Doll Warner Brothers
A playful semi -spoken songwith a calypso feel and catchy, gospel chorus. Cute.
ClannadA Dream In The Night - RCA/Bela
Predictably atmospheric stuffwith certain misty, Irishcharm.a More useful to late -night programmers.
Tongue N' CheekEncore -Syncopate
Once again the considerablelegacy left by Chic is being ex-ploited by modern dance crews.A radio -friendly number writ-ten by Jam & Lewis.
Mr.LeeGet Busy -fire
A hip house number that isalready a hit in Holland. Greatgroove and an insistent hookline.
Deacon BlueQueen Of The New Year CBS
A refreshing and light-heartednumber with a C&W rhythm hrthe mould of Real Gone Kid.Very probably a huge hit.
CC CatchMidnight Hour- Metronome
Nothing to do with the WilsonPickett track of the same name. This number has an =clientKeith Cohen re -mix (Paula Ab-dul, Alexander O'Neil) butlacks any real power in the vocaldelivery.
Noir DesirLes Ecorches - Kerley
Another excellent rock basedpop song from one of the verybest of the new French groups.Moody, passionate and totallyconvincing.
Paul SimpsonWalk Away From Lose - Coolterrpo
A very American sound fromthis talented UK composer.Featuring the considerable vocaltalents of Anthony White.
La PatEine Frau Fur Die Liehe Etat
Despite her well publiciseddislike of making records, thisDutch artist has made a finedebut LP in the cabaret tradi-tion. Although she is not astraditional as Ute temper, thematerial has a definite Weill-esque character. Add to this aplayful sense of melody and youhave a very successful firstalbum. 'By Fischweib,Cinderella and Voi Batare.
Seigen OnoComma Do Garcons VentureA haunting and beautifulrecord, largely made up of in-strumental pieces. The songsoften *aunt strings and, on themore Latin influenced stuff, brass. With guitar by ArmLindsay and Bill Friroll this is avaried, lovingly constructedrecord that would be suitablefor adventurous programmers.
Lil Louis & The WorldFrom The Mini Of Lil FERRILondon
The man responsible for one ofthe biggest House hits of lastyear, French Kis has come upwith an album of tough, late 80sdance music Some of the tracksare really ouly to be danced tobut others such as Black Outand Insecure are substantial, well-produced contemporary pop.
The SundaysReading,Writing & Arithmetic -Bout Fa*
After the immense amount ofUK press hype and a sparklingdebut single Can't Be Sure, comts the album. In case youhave not heard the band theymake a sound best described assoft rock or folk -tinged pop bas-ed around Harriet Wheeler'sstrong, clear voice. As an LP thisis not as good as one might haveexpected but that is probablypartly because so much was ex-pected.
SybilSybil - Nex
Against a background of hard,House inspired pop are artistslike Soul II Soul, Paul Simpsonand Sybil. Theirs is an altogethersofter world view and they alltake a fair degree of inspirationfrom late 70s dance musicgenerally and Chic in particular. This is tine LP of laid-back,melodic dance music from anumber of happening producersincluding Gail King, Jam. Brat -ton and Howie Hersh.
Oran Juice JonesTo Be Immortal - MIKESR&B with a funky, playful edgewhich at its best is reminiscent ofJohnny Guitar Watson. Unde-manding music which suffersfrom some truly awful lyrics butmusically is sophisticated andpleasant enough.
FinitribeGrossing 10K - One Link ManAn album that proves thatradical pop and moderntechnology can combine to makegood music Powerful, uncom-promising and full of righteousanger this is a vital word foralternative and dance program-mers. Try Built In Monster andAsk A Slily Question.

SPOTLIGHTTanita Tikaram Unveils Her Sweet Souvenirs
Less than 18 months afterthe release of her debut
LP Ancient Heart:20 -year old singer -songwriter Tanita
Tikaram returns thismonth with her second
album titled 'The SweetKeeper:
Wteith Ancient HeartTikaram built up an in-mational following
that resulted in three and a halfmillion album sales and a sixmonth tour of Europe, the USand Canada. By the summer shewas ready to start recording againwith the same producers, RodArgent and Peter van Hookeworking in Argent's home studio."It is easy to work like that, youjust feel very relaxed and you canjust get on with your music!' saysTikaram. "I just wanted to makeanother album and I had all thesongs!'
Not surprisingly the newmaterial has a feeling of pickingup where she left off and the fanswon last time around are unlikelyto be disappointed with the 10new songs. Tikaram tends to writespontaneously, her work remai-ning largely unrevised withcharacteristic themes cropping upthroughout. The 'Sweet Keeper' isa character in one of the newssongs, I Owe It All To You,
written about her mother. The'Ancient Heart' of the first albumtitle comes horn one of its tracksCathedral Song.
"I have a wealth of material Ihave a well of people to share withyou!' goes a line in one of herearly lyrics. As a songwriterTikaram knows she can rely onthe emotional response of heraudience and says the old songscontinue to evolve for her. "Thatis what keeps them alive. I
especially like to hear what theymean to other peopl' she says.
'These songs are quite inter-national: writes Tikaram in hernotes on the new album. 'Theyhave been written all over theplace, all written on tour. I can
by Sally Stratton
remember places by the songs Ihave written:
So, It All Came Back Todaybrings back memories of SanDiego, Consider The Rain
reminds her of a torrentialdownpour in Rome and the testsingle, NM Almost Got It Together,is her souvenir of Dublin "It isa very up song and it seemed agood way to start the new year -onp a' positive note! ' she says.
The single was released on
January 2, often a risky time ofyear for new product, but UKradio was serviced with it earlyresulting in a significant amountof pm -release airplay on BBCRadio One. Tikaram was alsoavailable for promotion in earlyDecember so the UK -basedinternational radio show 'RockOver London' and the 'Coca-Cola Eurcehart Hot 100' werealready behind the single by
Christmas.She is spending January pro-
moting the single and album inEurope before starting a 15 --
month world tour in the UK on
February 3. In mid March shemoves across to Europe for sevenweeks touring Holland, Den-mark, Sweden, Finland, Norway,West Germany and France. Then, after visiting the US, she willreturn to Europe for the summerfestivals and the rest of thecontinent will be covered in theautumn with the tour lasting wellinto 1991.
The schedule seems gruellingbut Tikaram enjoys it. "I am any
eager to get on the road again. Ihave got some new players, theband is slightly bigger. It will begood fun for me to see how it allfits together!'
Her manager is agent andpromoter Paul Charles of theUK's longest established agencyAsgard. He took her on two yearsago and is confident thatalthough still only 20, she has thetalent and attitude to deal withher success. "From day one shehas been actively involved in theplanning of all her careen" hesays. "She has a grasp ofeverything that is happening.
Even when I met her at 18 sheknew about publishing (Tikaramnow has her own publishingcompany Brogue Music). She alsoknew about MR and had a goodidea that she wanted to makemusic her career and 50 had goneto the trouble of finding outabout the busirans!'
Together Charles and Tikaramdecided WEA was the best recordcompany for her needs "becausethey were most into what she wasdoing for the right reasons", saysCharles. "They convinced us thatfrom working at an internationallevel with Jam Mitchell, JacksonBrowne Paul Simon and RyCooder they knew how to lookafter this kind of artist. One of thethings which pleased me was thatwhen she went round theterritories to do internationalpromotion right at the beginning, without exception, they treated
wanted to help break her and theydid not just want to wait forthings to happen in the UK first!'
Norway is without doubtTikaram's biggest success story.Ancient Heart is the country'sbiggest ever -selling CD and it
topped the album chart there for14 weeks. "The record companyin Norway was very supportive ofTikaram from the word go:' saysNina Howard from WEA's inter-national department in London."She did a lot of promotion therewhich increased awareness andshe feels very at home there TheNorwegians do like her son ofmusic - you only need to look atthe success of Leonard Cohenthem All these factors contri-buted to her success!'
A video of her concert on theisland of Mosti, off the coast nearBergen, was filmed during theNorwegian tour and televised byChannel 4 in the UK on January3. The country also inspired asong on the new album. Sunset'sArrived was written in Oslo as "asort of celebration".
People who met TanitaTikaram last year will notice shehas become more cosmopolitanand she admits that travelling andtouring have made her moreconfident.

In this week's focus on Scandinavia Music & Media talks to IFPI board member DagHaeggvist, who welcomes increasing international acceptance for local talent and whogives his views of the region's market trends during the past ten years. We also tune into new talent by anticipating cross -over acts for the nineties with the help of radio DJs.We also explore retailing developments in the area, highlighting the excitement surroun-
ding Sweden's first megastore, due to open in August this year.

THE SOUND OF SCANDINAVIA
Nordic Talent For the NinetiesJon Henley
In the 70s it was Abba. Then came A -Ha. The late Mshave belonged to Roxette. Who are Scandinavian Din
tipping to take over the crown in the 90s, and whatpart does radio play in making the hits of tomorrow?
Bo Berg, Voice, Copenhagen:"1 would select two acts: Nikolaj
and Sos Fenger. Nikolaj is a
guitarist, a cross between BraeSpringsteen and traditional folk -a bit of everything and a hardstyle to describe His first solo LPon Medley has had rave pressreviews and we have been playinghim heavily at the Voice.
'Bo Berg, Radio Vole e, Copenhagen
"He sings in Danish but thatshould be no obstacle to success inScandinavia. Sanne Salomensenhas sold over 300.000 of herlance LP across Scandinavia andshe sings exclusively in Danish. The rave reviews may be a pro-blem - it is the old story of criticalsuccess almost blocking popularappeal. This LP will probably on-ly sell around 25.003. But he is abig hope for the future.
"Sac Fenger is terrific She hassung backing or lead vocals foralmost every major Danish bandyou could name and her first soloLP has topped our album charts. We are playing her more thanthree times a day. One of thetracks is in Swedish and she hasdeclared her intention of wantingto sell internationally.
"Of the established acts, I
think Disneyland After Dark(DAD) are going to be one of thebiggest Danish acts we have everseen.Them is an awful lot of talent herejust waiting for the breakthrough. And local radio is becoming theplace to break it. Particularly nowas the independent record com-
panics realise what we can do andhave begun sending us decent pro-mo material!'
Niels Pedersen, Uptown FM,Copenhagen:"If I had to pick one it would beHenning Staeek (Genlyd). He hasbeen singing solo for 10 years buthe really only found his own voicewith his latest LP, Dreams ToRemember. It has got the spirit ofR&B and late 50s rock 'n roll andlearnt. Elvis Presley's oldvocalists, the Jordanaires. He ison heavy rotation, between twoand four times a day
"Of course DAD and laidBack are already trying hard tobreak outside Denmark. But weare badly in need of some newacts here.
"We play 20% Danish music, sometimes mom The local sta-tions are winning and record com-panies are waking up to the factthat they cannot break an actwithout our support. DanmarksRadio, the state broadcaster, is
still living in 1949. But we couldalso do better - the concept ofprogramming is still very new hereand a lot of stations play 'free for-mat' which means they miss a lotof acts. We could really build anact up with proper programm-ing:'
May Pedersen, Uptown FM,Copenhagen
Bjorn Faarlund, Radio One,Oslo:"The most promising Norwegianact is One 2 Many. They spent fiveweeks in the US top 40 but didnothing in Europe Another isTNT, a heavy rock group whichhave done well in Japan but areyet to make an impact on the restof the world. My other tips wouldbe Stage Dolls, Lava -.Norway's
Bjorn Faarlund, Radio One Oslo
most talented session musicians -Brother To Brother and 2 Brave. They all have a chance And thenthem is Dance With A Stranger. They sing in English and they arehugely popular here.
"The most important factorfor any Scandinavian band hop-ing to break internationally is
luck. Look at Roxette - someonetook a tape to the US, a DJ likedit, and you have a mega -hit. Thereare enough good musiciansaround, they just need to be in theright place at the right time. AlsoI think it is fair to say the recordcompanies have spent money inthe wrong places in the past.
"Commercial radio is becom-ing a major force in Norway. Ithas been around for eight yearsand has changed the industry -
before that you had one statebroadcaster, no chart shows andno playlisting. Commercial TVwould help the music industrybecause at present there is one TVmusic show a week, lasting for on-ly 30 mine. But commercial radiohas definitely helped break acts. One 2 Many would not have had ahit without it. It is particularlyimportant in parts of the countrythat do not have access to satelliteTV.
"But just as vital in Norway istouring. Norwegians like acts they.n see and believe in:'
Tony Burton, Hit Factory andRadio West, Stavanger:"Dance With A Stranger are do-ing very well and will appeal to aninternational audience TheSeptember When also came upwith a very interesting first album. The Dum Dum Boys play excitingmusic in rather a punky vein, butthey sing in Norwegian. If they re-do same of their better tracks inEnglish, as they are rumoured to
be doing, they could do very well."As far as I am concerned you
have got to sing hi English tobreak internationally. Only a veryfew artists who sing in their ownlanguage - like Lis Sorensen,Sanne Salomonsen and KimLarsen - can cross borders, evenwithin Scandinavia. But givenEnglish lyrics, there are still twoschools of thought about crossingover. The first, and the one mostrecord companies follow, is thatyou first have to sell 150.000copies in Norway. The second isthat you need a massive budgetfrom an international label and ahuge marketing campaign. Thatworked for A -Ha.
"Commercial TV would be abig help. At the moment there isjust Nu, and if you succeed ingetting them behind you you havegot it made But that is easier saidthan done. Local commercialradio certainly makes a difference, though. Even in Stavanger we cansee the records we play heavilyselling well in town, and in Oslo -where a quarter of the country'spopulation live Radio One cancertainly break records on a na-tional scale
"Record companies often sendus promo material announcing`We are top of Radio One'splaylist', so they obviously take itseriously But a lot of stations arevery unadventurous - they tend tostick to the Billboard, Music &Media or Music Week charts anddo not go with what they believein. At Radio West we try to playthe music we like, although wehave to stick to a top 40, MORand oldies mix - all things to allpeople. But our single of the weekwill get played at least 20 timesduring that week:'
Tony Barton, HitFaceory andRadio
MUSIC it MEDIA January 12,1220
Maths Broborg, SverigesRadio, Stockholm:"My tip is the Electric Boys -theymake funky metal music and livethey are excellent. They have beenpopular here since early 1989
when they released their first LP.But they will have to clean uptheir lyrics if they want anymeasure of success in the US.
"A lot of Swedish bands justtry to emulate Roxette or copy theWhitesnake/Def Leopard ap-proach. Acts like Glory and Real, despite the latter's success in West
Maths 'honors, Svenges malls;Stockholm
THE SOUND OF SCANDINAVIA
Germany, are altogether toopredictable. Perhaps the most in-teresting aspect of Swedish musicat the moment is the dance rosteron the Telegram label. Leila K,Papa Dee and particularly Titiyo -a terrific vocalist who couldbecome a smash - are coming upwith new and fresh sounds.
Leif Wind, Radio Gothen-burg, Gothenburg:"For my money the big star will
be Papa Dee. He is following inLeila K's footsteps, but whereasshe is all rhythm, he adds thelyrics. Even at 19 years of age, hehas got more all-round quality. His current single is After TheRain and his next should berecorded in January
"A lot of Swedish acts now ac-tively prefer sticking with a
Swedish identity rather than copy-ing UK and US bands - they haverealised that is more lucrative Ifthey can sell 200.009 copies of aSwedish -language record on thenational market they stand tomake more money than theywould with a failed internationalrelease
"Another talented young act is
So What. They are only 18, andthey have released four singlesalready. And Jim Gidhed fromGothenberg is also a singer towatch out for. Gothenberg is real-ly Sweden's talent city at the mo-ment - there are plenty of youngacts with real potential
"As far as airplay is concerned,we tend not to give specific actsextra rotation. We programmevery precisely and each show hasits own strict format. Talentednewcomers will simply featurewithin those formats!'
Pentti Teravainen, Radio Musa,Tampere:"Finnish bands are beginning tomake it. There are several acts bas-ed in Los Angeles at the moment, notably former Hanoi Rocksvocalist Mike Monroe - who hasclose ties with Guns 'N Roses -Havana Blacks and Smack.Gringos Locos have signed withAtlantic Back at home PeerGynt's latest single, Wake Me Up,was described as an internationalhard rock hit and awarded fullpoints by Kerning! magazine.
"Boycott play an excelled root-sy power rock, The Boozing Bang
& Dance Crew have a new singleout on CBS, and Mikael An-dreot's poppy dance sound seemsalso to be finding favour. He isdiscussing a possible deal withCBS right now "As far as rota-tion is concerned, I will recom-mend tracks to my DJs but won'tforce them to play them. A trackthat we particularly like will beplayed three or four times a day.Radio in Finland is now thenumber one way to breakan act. It is the fastest and mostflexible medium - and the recordcompanies are waking up to that:'

Dag Haeggvist, chairman of SonetGrammofon and IFPI board member,
comments on 10 yearsof growth in the
Scandinavia market.
On the CD influence:"There is every reason tobelieve that the upwardtrend brought about byCD will continue, as moreand more product is nowbecoming available in theCD format includingmuch back cataloguefrom local artists. Someproduct is now availablesolely on CD - and midand budget -priced mate-rial is also helping to in-crease the CD market!"
On Swedish dominace:"The volume spread bet -
wren the four Nordiccountries is likely to con-tinue much as it is now,due to their varying sizesof population. I predictSweden to continue as theleading market thoughFinland will increase itsshare because of thebooming industrial en-vironment there in recentyears!'
On sales successes:"I think floe main
positive element to bedrawn from the figures isthe very active andhealthy development oflocal recording activitiesin each of the Nordiccountries, plus a healthiermedia environment andattitude related to thebreak-up of the state
monopoly situation inradio and TV!"
On Norway"s decline:"The dip in Norwegian
sales between 1987 and1988 is the logical conse-quence of the backlashagainst the sales boom ofthe 'oil' years!'
On the future:"I forsee that general
sales will continue to growon ti modest but steadybasis over the next threeyears mainly m a result ofthe continued CDdevelopment but also as aresult of the currentstrong local recording ac-tivities in Sweden,Finland, Norway andDenmark!"

1989 National Best SellersAs some Scandinavian artists continue to develop considerable reputations outside their own territories,
others have had even bigger success back home. Roxette may have been the international Scandinavian successof 1989, but m their native Sweden they were matched in sales by solo artist Orup.
Music & Media examines the national best sellers of the past year and how they have fared abroad.
Denmark SwedenWhen Saone Salomonsen return-ed to the music scene with the LPSanne after having her first child, she produced one of the fastestDanish sellers for years.
Before the release of the albumthere was an extensive TV cam-paign with interviews and videos.
Sanne Salumensen gashed by ahuge marketing campaign
The first single Hots Du Forstodfound favour with DJs in bothDenmark and Sweden and thisprovided a good base for sales ofthe LP. Virgin Denmark gave aparty for retailers from all overDenmark and they (rather thanthe press) heard the LP first.
The company also mounted itsbiggest ever fly -posting campaignand Sanne appeared on all themajor TV shows. Radio stationsliked and supported the LP. Theresult of all this is a doubleplatinum success with sales in ex-cess of 227.000 in Denmark alone,a further 100.000 copies inSweden plus an as yet unknownbut significant number in Nor-way. In a market that regularlysurprises outsiders with its hugesales figures Sanne Salomomsenis the past year's biggest success.
Although most people expectedRoxette to be 1989's biggest sellerin Sweden the duo were equalledon national terms by solo artistOmp. Before his WEA SwedenLP Orup 2 was released in April, two singles, Upp Over Mina Oranand MR had both gone gold(25.0(10 units). Consequentlywhen the album was released, ac-companied by a media blitz thatincluded larger than life in-storedisplays and full -page newspaperadverts, advance orders were up to90.000.
The record entered the charts atnumber 2, stayed there all throughthe summer and then, following anational tour and a second in-store blitz it finally reachednumber 1 and stayed there forfour weeks. Now, nine months after its release,Orup 2 has been certified double -platinum with sales in excess of250.000.
Oran, a massive summer hit
It is ironic that an early reviewof Look Sharp (EMI) said that itwas "not enough for an interna-tional career". Roxette gave live Kirk, a career spanning 20 years
and phone-in interviews with allmajor and local radio stationswhich started playing two par-ticular tracks from the LP, ListenTo Your Heart and The Look.
A giant four-colour posterfeaturing the tour dates and a life-size stand-up display weredistributed to shops. The tourstarted in November and the bandcombined this with in-store ap-pearances plus local press and TVinterviews. As a result the bandhave sold 511.000 copies of LookSharp since its release in 1988, ap-proximately 250.000 of whichwere in 1989. On top of this theyhave sold a further 2.5 millionalbums worldwide
FinlandUnknown outside of ScandinaviaKirke has been popular in
Finland for 20 years now. Hisvocal range means his musicvaries from muscular rock to sen-sitive ballads. Despite a careerthat stretches back to 1967 his big-gest break came at the end of Oc-
tober 1988 when he won theSyksyn Save! (Autumn Melody)contest with Surun PyymitSilmistani (I Hate To See TheSadness In Your Eyes).
The album of the same namewas released in December 1988 ac-companied by a major radio andpress advertising campaign. TheLP has now sold 146.000 copies inFinland and the recently releasedfollow-up Anna Kasi has alreadysold 61.000. Now he is recordingin English and the material will bepremiered at the 1990 MIDEM.
NorwayOut of population of four millionmore than 160.000 people havealready bought the latest DanceWith A Stranger LP (To, Norsk)since its release in November. Theband have also been nominatedfor their second Grammy award.
Although there was no TVadvertising prior to the album'srelease there was a heavynewspaper and magazine cam-paign and more importantly, a 29date tour in November/Decem-ber. Another tour will begin inFebruary.
The record has been en-thusiastically received by Nor-way's Ms. They are playing thesingle Invisible Man but alsopicking up on other tracks such asExplosion Of Time and StopLooking For Love.
As yet the band have not releas-ed anything outside Norway butin January Sonet, their recordcompany in Sweden and Den-mark, will be releasing a singlyThe album will be released in bothterritories in February.

Sweden's First `Megastore'Set For August Launch
The long -running saga ofSweden's first megastore
took a new twist inOctober with the newsthat CBS International
was to partner retailgroup SkivAkademien in
the project, markingthe first -ever CBS
involvement in Europeanretail. Now, following 14
months of delays, thestore is scheduled to
open in Stockholm citycentre in August 1990.
ISIeither partner will revealhow much the recordcompany has put into the
venture, though the maximumtotal set-up cost is estimated ataround Skr 14 million (US$ 2.2million apprx.). CBS stepped infollowing a short-lived partner-ship between SkivAkademien andSweden's Grammofon Electra, which has since filed forbankruptcy, and fruitless talkswith the Virgin group.
CBS vice president business af-fairs, Jeremy Pearce, says there's"no formulated philosophy"behind the company's Involve-ment, though "it is a very impor-tant move for us. At this stage allwe have done is help out by sup-plying some short-term finance. But then we are not in thebusiness of lending moneywithout a reason!'
SkivAkademien, Sweden'slargest specialist record retailgroup, says CBS has provided aloan with an option of convertingit into shares at a later date. Partof the loan is also involved inSkivAkademien's'Megahertz' store in Copenhagen,an 800 square metre shop whichopened in the centre of the citytwo months ago. Though salesvolumes in Scandinavia haveshown an upward trend since theintroduction of CD five years ago, many industry obserVers believeretail remains underdevelopedacross the four Nordic countries.
CBS Sweden managing directorSten of Klinteberg, who was activein securing the CBS involvementin the Stockholm development, says the venture will provide asignificant boost for Swedish
sales: "It may appear pretentiousto my that one store could in-crease a national record marketbut I think that with the rightmarketing and the right conceptthe megastore stands a goodchance. Then will be a broadspread of repertoire which will ap-peal not only to the young, butalso to the over -35s, who an themost difficult to attract.
"More people from the coun-tryside may be attracted toStockholm to use the store. As inLondon and Paris, the idea is tomake shopping for records an ex-perience!'
But Peter Yngen, president ofindependent label Misdur, is lessenthusiastic He believes althoughthe initial publicity may boostrecord sales, in the long term themarket will be relatively unaf-fected: "The megastore will takebusiness away from the medium-sized outlets, while the specialistshops will retain their share of themarket. It will redistribute thesales, not make them grow."
Staffan Fogstrand, SkivAkadamien managing director, enteredthe record business after spending10 years with leading book retailer

Fogstrand: "We have our ownconcepts, our own architecture, our own ideas. The megastoreaims to be an experience in itself.Customers will have the full mngeof music in front of them, there'splenty of room to move aroundand it's a comfortable en-vironment.
"At present people fromSweden shop for records whenthey are in London, but it's notbecause the records are 10%
cheaper. It's for the feeling andthrill of being in a big store'

Akademebokhandeln. He has sofar opened four 450 square metrestores -two in Stockholm, one justoutside the capital at Soedertalge, one in Oslo -and the Copenhagen'Megahertz' outlet. The Stock-holm megastore will absorb oneof the current SkivAkademienstores, 'Callerian'. The exact sizeof the megastore has not beenfinalised, with proposals rangingfrom 1.300 square metres to amaximum of 2.500. ButFogstrand says the cost of settingup such a venture is around Skr7.0W per square metre regardlessof whether the store is big orsmall.
The store will operate on threefloors. Fogstrand estimates that60-7047o of floorspace will bedevoted to CDs, LPs and MCs,with the remainder given over tovideo (music and feature film),
diets: "I think Virgin do it verywell in that the retailing side doesnot know what the productionside is doing, and vice versa. That's the way to do it. For betterefficiency and less confusion youhave to keep it separate"
As to doubts that record com-panies involved in retail may givepreferential offers to their ownstores, Fogstrand says that inreality"it really does not pay, long term,to do that. It represents a totalmisunderstanding of the purposesof good retail".
H&M's clothing sectionunderlines Fogstrand's belief thatother luxury goods -fit well into amegastore environment. "Thishas never been done before inScandinavia;' he says, "but it's anatural development. If themegastore is attracting customers
between the age of 15 and 25, thenyou get to thinking 'what elsewould they want to buy'?" But hestresses that the clothing sectionwould be relatively small, and
Sten af Kihneberg, CBS Swedenmanaging director
would "complement rather thancompete with" the sale of CDs,records and tapes.
Looking to the general develop-ment of retail, Fogstrandacknowledges the advent of CD"stimulated the buying public"and helped boost sales.
But for retailers the size of the for-mat makes it more difficult thanthe vinyl album to promote in-store and also leads to an increasein theft.
He predicts the slide of thevinyl album will continue: "In ayear I believe there will be next -to -no sale of classical titles on vinylalbum, and it's a matter of threeto four years before the formatdisappears entirely. Record com-panies will find that it simply isn'tworth , their while to producethere
SkivAkademien is keen to ex-pand further, particularly intoinland. The company's 1988 tur-
nover was around Skr 50 million(US$ 7.8 million appm.(, andFogstrand estimates theStockholm megastore could in-crease that three -fold: "It's a bigcommitment so it's very impor-tant to get it right. It's likely to bea couple more years before Wedecide to open any new stores!

An Independent ViewpointIFPI board member Dag Haeggqvist welcomes new climate of acceptance
by Chns Fuller
As Dag Haeggqvist, chairman of Sonet Grammofon, assumes his new role on the IFPI board, internationalrespect for Scandinavian rock and pop has never been
greater. On the heels of the likes of A -Ha, Roxette andEurope, new acts such as Denmark's DAD (Disneyland
After Dark), Norway's The September When andSweden's Leila K look poised to capitalise on
the new climate of acceptance.
Haeggqvist, who joinedSonet 30 years ago, is
proud of the region'sachievements: "Scandinavianquality has been proven insubstantial ways over the yearsthrough groups such as Abba, A -Ha and now Roxette. These arenot one -hit wonders like the Sing-ing Nun from Belgium. These areacts that really mean something.Such worldwide chart achieve-ment is considerable in view of theobstacles that face acts trying tobreak out of Scandinavia!'
Such obstacles include the "im-age problem" of many Scandina-vian acts, the prejudice that existsin the bigger markets towards aregion sometimes described as'the Frozen North'. Haeggqvistsays the UK is still internationallyregarded as the keyhole to theEuropean market, and that hasgood and bad effects: "It is goodin that the UK industry is moreimaginative than the US. But it isbad because there still exists a lotof arrogance and prejudice in theUK towards non -UK or non -USmusic'
"As with Lanthada, there's ge-
from country to country: "Butfrom a business standpoint, itpays for companies such as
ourselves to think in'Scandinavian' terms!'
Sonet, Scandinavia's leadingindependent record company, hasoperations in Sweden, Norway,Denmark and Finland so thatHaeggqvist considers himself"more Scandinavian thenSwedish". He was appointed tothe IFPI board in October, andwith the retirement from theboard of Anders Helmstedt(chairman, EMI Sweden) andRoger Lindberg (senior director,Facer Music, Finland) he becomesits sole Scandinavian represen-tative
Talent -wise Haeggqvist says
each of the four territories hashealthy and thriving local scenes:"They lend to develop freely ofone another, though I think ifthere's a stimulating situation hione country, then it spills over in-to its neighbour. In this way I
think Norway has been assisted bythe strong music scene in Sweden, which it is quite close to incultural terms!'
"The pan-European approach does notadd anything to the industry, nor lead toany real advantage."
nuinc surprise there every time arecord from outside the UKtracks the top 10. That is very digferent from the more open at-titudes of other European ter-ritories such as France'
Another frustration is thegeneral international disregard forthe cultural differences betweenthe four Scandinavian territories.Haeggqvist says these differencesare reflected by the relativelysmall overflow of promotion
Aside from fighting for Scan-dinavian interests, Haeggqvistalso pledges to put the case for theindependent label: "Thatrepresents a broader responsibili-ty. In speaking for the in-dependents you will speak forthose in the UK, West Germany,Scandinavia, wherever. The pro-blems are similar everywhere'
Indeed, the past year has beenespecially problematic Due to in-ternational distribution deals
struck between major labels, plusthe trend for majors to open newoffices in smaller territories, manyof Europe's independent recordcompanies have lost valuablebusiness.
Sonet, in particular, has faced aseries of financial blows. In June,it lost distribution deals with bothChrysalis and Jive, and fromJanuary I faces a further 153/4
estimated reduction in turnoverthrough the loss of IslandRecords, which switches to HMGfor Scandinavia.
Haeggqvist remains philo-sophical: "The loss of Island wasparticularly sad as the develop-ment of Sonet and Island hasgone almost hand in hand over
the years. But then we are left witha heritage and knowledgeresulting from the long relation-ship. Sonet would have been avery different company withoutit!'
The Sonet chairman believesthe company's diversification intofilm distribution (with SonetFilms) and sell -through video willhelp compensate for the losses:"As opposed to a ThIdec or CGD,we work to the concept of a total
media operation. Hence we arefar less vulnerable when we loserecord labels!'
"Ow philosophy is that we willnot make any cutbacks or redun-dancies, but we require all ofthose within our operations tochange their outlook and developa dynamic way of working. Wefeel there is tremendous potentialin what we have left!'
For the future, Haeggqvistbelieves the major labels will faceas many problems as the in-dependents: "Many of these newinvestments may turn out to bemore costly ! and difficult tomanage than they imagined.Them are tough times ahead inthe multi -national boardrooms!'
He also dismisses the notionthat in the future the remainingindependents may be wholly ab-sorbed by major labels. Shouldthat situation arise he says itwould be destructive to the wholemusic industry and the backlashwould be strongly felt by themulti -nationals.
Haeggqvist: "Their (the majorlabels') business structure is suchthat they cannot possibly keeptrack of what's going on on a
creative A&R level in the sameway the independents can. Muchnew talent would be missed!'
Looking to the future for theScandinavian record industry,Haeggqvist says the deregulationof both TV and radio acrossSweden, Norway and Denmarkcan only have beneficial effects inthat it will increase the number ofoutlets for video and live perfor-mance In panicular, he welcomesthe Swedish parliament's pro-posal fora third, commercial stateTV channel, likely to appear in1991.
Haeggqvist: "We are very
much in favour of a loosening upof the total Government monopo-ly control on TV and we feel thatthere is a need for this, Competi-tion in TV is a healthy develop-ment, though we should he wary
THE SOUND OF SCANDINAVIA
of a situation where there is totalderegulation, as in Italy, whichwill drastically lower programmestandards:'
The third Swedish channel mayalso provide a spur to the existingSTV I and 2 which, says Haegg-qvist, have the potential to make
possible, would be as destructiveto the music business as having ittotally controlled by multi-nationals. It really cannot be anykind of sensible goal to try andeliminate cultural differences bet-ween countries.
"Take, for example the pro -
"From a business standpoint, it pays forcompanies such as ourselves to think in'Scandinavian' terms:'
far better programmes if betterfinanced.
Though keen to see Scandina-vian music break borders, Haegg-qvist believes the concept of a'pan-European' music market isan illusion:"The pan-Euro idea, it it were
"There still exists a lot of arrogance andprejudice in the UK towards non -UK ornon -US music:'
11111.11111.1111.1.11.111111SOMEWHERE IN AN OFFICE IN EUROPE:
"Alright! Which one of you has got it?"
"If this is the kind of thing you oftenhear when looking for this week's copyof Music & Media, it's time you tookout your own subscription. Fill in the
uel'
blems of promotion on a pan-European basis. If a record was tobreak within a four -week span allover Europe, how could the artistspossibly promote it effectively?Like The Inkspots 40 years on,you would have to have four dif-ferent versions of bands to coverthe whole market and penetrate itproperly. It would be impossiblet nlinate.
"The pan-European approachdoes not add anything to the in-dustry, nor lead to any real advan-tage It wouldn't increase the
record market, nor the total take.
In fact it would probably reduceboth. I think the present situation,
where there's a lot of national in-dividuality but also an amount ofoverspill between the variousmarkets, is far more desirable"
In Scandinavian terms, Haegg-qvist says the steady growth insales volume across the region ispartly due to a "renewed en-thusiasm that CD has brought tothe market". More significant, however, is "the regular ap-pearance of really strong product, particularly when it comes fromlocal artists".
Haeggqvist: "In general thesituation is very well organised, here, the market is steadily grow-ing, but I don't think it's realisticto expect my explosions, volume -wise As here at Sonet, I think themost interesting send will be
record companies moving intobroader media development, maybe producing or co -producingmore programmes for nationalTV and radio. In this way the in-dustry will broaden and, in doingso, strengthen!'
