JULY 2020 REMEMBERING NICK ACOCELLA Last month sadly saw the passing of Nick Acocella. Nick was a respected journalist, editor and author with a finger on the pulse of NJ politics and baseball. As beloved host of Pasta & Politics, we considered him part of the NJTV family. Fortunately, he left fans of his popular cooking series two final episodes to enjoy. Dig in to his kitchen conversations with former New Jersey Governor Don DiFrancesco and musician John Pizzarelli on Wednesdays, July 1 and 8 at 8pm. His vibrant personality and talents will be missed, but his spirit — and recipes — live on. Read a touching tribute to Nick from Michael Aron A sbury Park, New Jersey is a small town next to the ocean literally divided by a set of railroad tracks. In the late 1960s, though there was obvious segregation, white and Black musicians frequently jammed together, creating a new sound that bridged the racial divide of the town. However, a build-up of tension due to the losses of well-paying jobs, recreational opportunities and decent living conditions for Asbury Park’s Black community came to a head in July 1970. For seven days, a section of the seaside resort town erupted in violent protests, leaving 180 people injured and the town crippled to a state of financial stagnation that would end up lasting for the next 45 years. The riots may have destroyed the fabled Westside jazz and blues scene, but from the flames of the burning city emerged an iconic Jersey sound. Witness Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt and Southside Johnny Lyon return to The Upstage, a psychedelic after-hours club in Asbury Park that has been shuttered for four-and-a-half decades, to reflect on how their early recordings were born out of the 1970s unrest and shaped their musical consciences. “NJTV is proud to be able to offer this important film to all New Jerseyans at a time when social injustice is again making headlines,” said NJTV General Manager John Servidio. “We hope it stimulates poignant conversation with our viewers, illustrating how progress can come from adversity, and the power of the arts to heal communities.” Musical Convergence by the Sea PREMIERES SUNDAY, JULY 5 AT 10PM

Asbury Park, New Jersey is a small town next to the ocean literally divided by a set of railroad tracks. On the east side: a resort destination with luxury hotels. On the western side: a community of lower-class immigrants and Blacks who staffed the upscale east side establishments. Asbury Park: Riot Redemption Rock & Roll tells the story of how music bridged the divide between the segregated town, the riots that tore it apart, and the long-awaited renaissance of the seaside town.

“We hope it stimulates poignant conversation with our viewers, illustrating how progress can come from adversity, and the power of the arts to heal communities.”
