Recipients of Honorary DegreesFOR THE HONORARY DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF HUMANITIESHALBERT McNAIR JONES was born in Laurinburg, North Carolina. He graduatedfrom the University at Chapel Hill, and later earned a Master’s Degree in Business.\dministration at Harvard University.Mr. Jones has distinguished himself in his business, his community, his church,and in education. He has served as President of Waverly Mills since 1935, and heis a director in ten North Carolina corporations embracing agriculture, manufaceluring, finance, and insurance.In spite of his many business interests, Mr. Jones has found time to serve asChairman of the Laurinburg School Board since 1951. He has served continuouslyon the Board of Trustees of Flora Macdonald College since 1936. He was ActingPresident of Flora Macdonald from 1948 to 1950.His strong interest in higher education is further evidenced by his work withthe Presbyterian Church in this field both at the state level where he is presently:1 member of the Board of Trustees of the Consolidated Presbyterian College, andnationally where he was elected Chairman of the Advisory Council on HigherEducation in 1953.At the peak of this continuing career of leadership and service, North CarolinaState College is honored to give special recognition to Halbert McNair Jones.

FOR THE HONORARY DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF SCIENCE\VrLLIAM GARDNER VAN Nora was born in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. Heearned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer Poly-Eechnic Institute and later his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Pennsylvania Stateollege.Dr. Van Note has made many contributions to engineering and to engineeringeducation. He has been President of Clarkson College, Potsdam, New York, since1951.In 1931, Dr. Van Note joined the faculty of North Carolina State College as aninstructor in Chemical Engineering. During the next twenty years he was con”sistently and actively interested in the professional development and growth of theCollege. In 1946 he was appointed Director of Engineering Research. In hiscapacity as the first Director, Dr. Van Note gave leadership to bringing engineeringresearch at the College to a high level of accomplishment.The faculty of the institution to which Dr. Van Note has made significant con-tributions welcomes him back to the campus to receive an honor that he richlydeserves.

FOR THE HONORARY DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF HUMANITIESCONRAD Lours “Ham, a native of Connecticut, holds the degree of Bachelor ofScience in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts.Long recognized and honored at home and abroad for his accomplishments inthe fields of public parks and recreation, Mr. Wirth has been a member of theNational Park Service for thirty years and its Director since 1951.Keenly interested in the provision of adequate recreational facilities for every—one, Mr. Wirth initiated the movement which resulted in the passage by Congressof the Park, Parkway and Recreational Area Study Act in 1936; and he directedthe state-by‘state studies which were undertaken under the authority of this Act.It has been through his efforts and zeal that many areas throughout this countryhave been set aside by the government to be used as public parks.It is indeed a pleasure for North Carolina State College to pay 5 ecial honor tothis dedicated public servant for his broad vision and untiring e orts on behalfof his fellow citizens.
