29 November 2019 VOLUME 33, NUMBER 35 Carjacked Culture Exhibition On Wednesday 20 November a number of students and staff attended the opening night of the Carjacked Culture exhibition. The exhibition held at Deakin University’s Phoenix Gallery was a stunning success, with visitors acknowledging the amazing work that students were able to produce. Students involved in the project were required to create a visual artwork that made a statement regarding the appropriation of Indigenous culture or their learnings from research into this area. The project commenced with a lecture by Deakin University staff on the history of appropriation from Indigenous communities around the world. This then instigated research by participating students. Students worked closely with their teachers as well as having the additional support and critique from local Aboriginal Elder, Joanne Layton and Bacchus Marsh Grammar’s artist in residence, Lou Callow. This culminated in their amazing artworks, many of which were accompanied by an artist statement that explored their inspiration and learning from their participation. These statements are powerful messages of hope and sympathy, as well as impassioned pleas for celebration and recognition of the beauty and majestic nature of Indigenous languages and imagery. Congratulations to all students and what they have been able to achieve, from their extensive research, to their sensitivities surrounding the work, to their enthusiasm for these designs and finally for the emotions that they were able to evoke with their commentaries. A special congratulations to Mrs Jane Todd, Mrs Karin Nolta, Miss Christine De Luca and Ms Lou Callow as this exhibit was the realisation of their enduring effort in the classroom and beyond. To constantly seek opportunities that move our students and their humanity much further than the curriculum allows is no straightforward task. The exhibited works are a credit to the students who have created them, the staff who have driven them and the school and Deakin University for continuing to provide these opportunities. Woodlea – Prep Day Camp to Staughton Vale

The Woodlea Preps enjoyed a fun-packed day at the Staughton Vale Farm for our camp day. The students participated in a range of activities run by Mrs McMahon and her team.

A highlight was being able to paint a rock that will be placed in the vegetable garden and will remain there for students to see next year when they visit.

Meher Arora in Prep WC has written a recount of the day’s events:

On Friday, we went to the Staughton Vale excursion. First we went on the bus. Next we reached the farm, over there we saw a new teacher and her name was Ms McMahon. After we had our snack we did lots of activities with lots of different teachers. After a while we went back. Finally we ate our lunch. It was the best day ever!

Ms Nicole Mill – Prep Coordinator – Woodlea

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Makenzie and Jai Copland

Jai and Makenzie Copland have travelled around Australia this year competing in the National BMX Series.

There have been 7 rounds and they competed in 5 of those rounds, travelling to Sydney, Darwin, Adelaide, Canberra and Hobart.

Jai raced in two classes the entire series and finished 3rd in the Country and on his cruiser he finished 2nd in the 13/14 Boys Cruiser class. Makenzie also had a great result finishing 2nd in the Country in a class of 10 Girls.

These are fantastic results to finish within the Top 3 in Australia for the series.

Next year Jai and Makenzie are planning to race at the USA Grand BMX Championships which is considered the largest BMX event in the world next to the Olympics.

Congratulations and good luck for 2020!

SRC News

During Term 4, we are running two different fundraising events: Breadtags for Wheelchairs and The Neighbour’s Place Food Train.

We are collecting breadtags at the Administration Office and donating them to a charity that uses the plastic to create market items that are then sold to raise funds for wheelchairs. More information can be found at the following website: http://www.breadtagsforwheelchairs.co.za/collections.html

We are also collecting non-perishable items for the annual Christmas Food Train. These items such as dried pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit, canned fish, rice, soup, etc. are then donated to The Neighbour’s Place, here in Bacchus Marsh, to help those in need.
