Head Coach

The2013-14seasonwillbeCap Pohlman’s 16th year as head coach of the Muskegon CommunityCollegeJayhawks.Heownsarecordof475&293.His2007-2008 Jayhawk squad won the school’s first ConferenceChampionshipandthe2009-2010squadbroke21schoolrecords including a record 44 wins. Last year’s squadfinished2ndintheconferencewitha34&15record.HewasbornandraisedinSaginawMichigan.Pohlmanthrew7nohittersatSaginawDouglasMacArthurHighSchool.Hethen moved on to Central Michigan University; his career there was highlighted by defeating South Carolina on a no-hitter and in the Regional and defeating Big Ten Champion Iowaona3-hitter.Hewasdraftedinthe9throundbythe Milwaukee Brewers and spent two years in the minors before his career ended because of an arm injury. Coach PohlmanspentoneseasonasavolunteercoachatCMUbeforebecomingtheheadcoachatChesaningHighSchool.Histeamswonsevenconferencechampionships.Hisbestteamwas32&7andtheysetmanystaterecords.HeleftChesaning to become the assistant baseball coach at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. His primary responsibilitythere was working with the pitchers. Starting with an 8manpitchingstaffCoachPohlmanbuiltapitchingstaffof 24 pitchers after 4 years. Four of his pitchers were drafted,includingScottSauerbeckandDaveSwartzbaugh.In2011GarrettBolt,whopitchedforPohlmanatMCC,wasdraftedbytheLADodgers.

CoachPohlmanspent12yearsatFruitportHighSchoolbeforeretiring. Hespent4yearsasVarsityBaseballCoach.Threeofthoseteamswereconferencechamps.Hishighschoolrecordover18yearswas351winsand145losses.In2002CoachPohlmanwaselectedtotheMichiganHighSchoolBaseballCoachesAssociationHallofFame.In2009hewasselectedtotheCMUHallofFameaspartofthe1971NationalRunner-ups.Hisresumealsoincludescoachingfootball,basketballandhewasalsoanathleticdirector.Hehasspokenatmanyclinicsandcamps.Heissupportedbyhiswifeof39years,Deb,aretiredteacher.Hehas2children;hisdaughterKarliisateacheratMuskegonPublicSchoolsandsheismarriedtoJasonBaldus,whoworksattheNewaygoIntermediateSchoolDistrict.HissonCareyismarriedtoCaraandtheyarebothteachersinGastonia,NorthCarolina.HeisalsotheproudgrandpaofKarinaandJackson Baldus.

Coach’s Comments - This years team should score runs. The question will be how fast the pitching develops. There is not much experience returning on the pitching staff. The defense should be above average and we have good team speed. If we are to compete in the league and qualify for the regionals our pitchers must improve quickly!

Allen Manyen isagraduatefromMasonHighSchool, where he was a 4 year varsity baseball starter. Afterhishighschoolcareer,hestartedhiscollegebaseballcareeratSienaHeightsUniversityinAdrian,MI.Afterhisfreshman year, he transferred to Muskegon Community CollegeandplayedforCoachPohlmanduringthe2010-2011season.Hewasverysuccessfulduring thatseasonandsignedtoplayforAquinasCollegeandplayedhislast2 years of eligibility there.

CoachManyen’sparents areMarkandLoriManyen.Healso has a younger sister named Sara. Coach Manyen is an avidfishermanandhunterduringhisfreetimeandlovesto stay active and be outside.

Coach’s Comments - Coach Manyen will work with the hitters and the outfielders. He brings a lot of enthusiasm to his job and to the team. He also is our recruiting and fundraising coordinator, as well as setting up our defense.

Dan Bloom iseagertobeginhisfirstyearasanAssistantCoachwith the JayhawkBaseball team.Hisresponsibilities will include working with the catchers, instructing bunting and strength and conditioning.

CoachBloomgraduatedfromMonaShoresHighSchoolin2009witha3.4GPA.Hewasvotedmostimprovedplayerhissenioryearwhenhehit.391.HepickedAlbionCollegeto continue his education because of their successful academicsandbaseballprogram.Hisfirstcollegiatehit(anRBIsingle)wasduringthe2010seasonagainstMadonna.He finished his career as the startingDH until injuriescuthis seasonshort.Thedecision toattendAlbionwasinfluencedbyhismotherandothermembersofhisfamilywhograduatedfromthere.WhileatAlbionhestudiedbothAthleticTrainingandExerciseScience.Bloomaccumulated900clinicalhoursatAlbion,assistedwithWMU’shockeyteamandobservedatShorelineSport&SpineinGrandHaven. He is close to his goal of becoming a CertifiedPersonalTrainerandaCertifiedStrength&ConditioningSpecialist.

Coach Bloom currently works at Extra Innings as a hitting and catching instructor. He also helps with fieldmaintenanceatMarshField.Hespenttimethissummerasanassistantwitha17URiptideBaseballteam.

Ched Gaskin is starting his first year as anassistant with the Jayhawk BaseballTeam. He was borninOcala, Floridaandmovedmany times throughouthischildhoodbeforehisfamilyfinallysettledinMichigan.Heis a 2009 graduate of Brighton High School. He choseMuskegon Community College to continue his education andbaseballcareer.AfterplayingfortwoyearsforCoachPohlman he transferred to Purdue University NorthCentralwherehewasnamedsecondteamAll-American.

Coach’s Comments - Coach Gaskin has many roles. He will work exclusively with the firstbaseman. Will be the bullpen coach, assist with the hitters and the catchers and at least for a while call the pitches. He brings a wealth of knowledge to this program.

Baseball TeamLukeisthesonofRogerandPattiBunting.HegraduatedfromIthacaHighSchoolin 2013. Luke played baseball and football. Luke was a four year letterman inbaseballandwasanAll-Stateinfielder.Lukewouldliketocontinuehiseducationand play baseball at a four year institution.

Coach’s Comments - Luke will make an immediate impact on our team as a starting 2nd Baseman. He runs well and plays good defense. He could be an outstanding player!

Zach is the sonofGreg andAnnetteCourtade. He is a graduateofRavennaHighSchoolwhereheplayedbothbaseballandfootball.ZachearnedthreeAll-Conference,All-Area,andAll-Districtawardsasapitcher.AfterMCC,heplansto transfer to a 4-year school to play baseball and pursue a degree in Business Management.

Coach’s Comments - Zach will get a chance to close for us. He must become more consistent in all that he does for us to succeed.

Reid is thesonofArthurand JulieBeffrey.Reid is fromBayCity,MIwherehegraduatedfromBayCityJohnGlennHighSchool.Reidplayedfouryearsofvarsitybaseball. Reid has two other siblings named Ryan and Paige. Reid is currentlystudying Criminal Justice.After MCC, Reid would like to continue his careerin baseball at a four year school. Reid would like to thank his family for being incredibly supportive in everything he does.

Coach’s Comments - Reid will be used as a D.H. and as a long-relief pitcher. He brings a quiet intensity that more members of our team can learn from!

KoryBrownisthesonofClayandJoAnneBrown.Koryhasabrother,Kyleandtwosisters,KadyandKara.KorygraduatedfromSpartaHighSchoolwhereheearnedAll-AreaHonorsinfootball,basketball,andbaseball.Koryhascommittedto Bowling Green State University where he will continue his baseball career and study business.

Coach’s Comments - Kory is a team captain and makes our offense go. If we are to score runs he must set the table. He is an outstanding defensive player.

Matthew is the son of Rick and Shelly Jesse. Matthew has three older brothers, Andrew,Michael,andKevin.MatthewgraduatedfromHemlockHighSchoolwherehe played four years of Varsity baseball and two years of Varsity football. Matthew plans on studying Sports Management and transferring to a university. Coach’s Comments - When Matt breaks some bad habits he will be an outstanding player. Until then he will be backing up both short and 2nd. He may also do some courtesy running.

Coach’s Comments - Aaron has not harnessed all the abilities he has. When he does he will be an outstanding player. This year he will back up in the Outfield and be used in various forms.

SpenceristhesonofMikeandRhondaPeters.SpencerisagraduateofShelbyHighSchool.SpencerwasathreeyearvarsitybaseballstarterandreceivedAll-Conference,All-Area, andAll-District honors as a Senior. Spencer is currentlyundecided on his major.

Coach’s Comments - Spencer has improved since the fall but must continue to control his offspeed pitches and the running game for him to help us this year.

JoeKostrezwaisthesonofRandyandLinneaKostrezwa.JoehasayoungersisterKatie. Joe graduated fromMona ShoresHigh School in 2013where he played3yearsofvarsitybaseball. JoereceivedhonorablementionAll-ConferenceandAll-Areaawardsforbaseball.Helovestospendtimeoutdoorsespeciallyinandaroundwater. Joe plans on pursuing aMaster’sDegree in the healthcare field.Joe would like to thank his family, girlfriend, and God for their unending support through the years.

Coach’s Comments - Joe must adjust to the mental side of pitching in order to help us this year. He has outstanding movement and will be good eventually, the question is when?

Kyle is the sonofRandyandChanteleLawson.Hehas twoyoungerbrothers,JordanandTyler,andayoungersister,Emma.Heisa2013graduateofMonaShoresHighSchool.KyleplayedtwoyearsofvarsitybaseballandreceivedAll-Conference,All-District,andAll-Areaawardsbothyears.Inhissparetime,Kyleenjoyshunting,fishing,andspendingtimewithfamilyandfriends.Heiscurrentlyundecidedonamajor but plans to attend a four year university in hopes of continuing his baseball career. Kyle would like to thank his family, friends, and coaches for supporting him throughout the years.

Coach’s Comments - Kyle has tremendous ability and he could be in our starting 4 for the season. He must improve his offspeed and pickoffs to reach his goals.

Caleb is the son of Tracy Roberts and Rachelle Stefanic. Caleb is a graduate of BoyneCityHighSchool.Calebwasathreesportathleteparticipatinginbaseball,soccer,andbasketball.HeearnedAll-Conference,All-District,andAll-Areahonorsinhisthreeyearsonvarsitybaseball.CalebplansonearninghisAssociateDegreein Criminal Justice, and plans to be a detective later in life.

Coach’s Comments - Caleb is back after taking off a year. He throws strikes and knows how to pitch. How quickly he comes back from taking last year off will directly impact our pitching staff!

PatrickisthesonofDonandKathyGiddings.Hehasonesister,Morgan,whowillbeattendingMCCtoplaysoftballandbasketballnextyear.Helovestohunt,fishandplaybaseball. PatrickgraduatedfromOakridgeHighSchool in2012,whenhereceived1stTeamAll-Statehonorsinbaseball.HewillbeattendingAquinasCollege next year to major in Education and continue his baseball career.

Coach’s Comments - Patrick is an outstanding player who must be even better for us to have the year we expect. He has the only real major experience on the infield and must play great defense to take the pressure off our younger infielders. His aggressiveness needs to rub off on others!

Baseball TeamJordanWahristhesonofRonandSherryWahrandhasabrother,Nate.JordangraduatedfromOakridgeHighSchoolwhereheparticipatedinfootball,basketball,and baseball. Jordan is a left handed pitcher for the Jayhawk baseball team.

Coach’s Comments - Jordan is adjusting to a number of changes we had to make in his delivery in the fall. How quickly he adjusts will determine how much he pitches this year.

Rogan comes to the Jayhawk baseball program as Pitcher. He graduated fromNorthMuskegonHighSchool.HereceivednumerousawardsforhiscontributionstohisvarsitybaseballteamasaPitcher/ThirdBasemanhisJuniorandSenioryears.Rogan also played varsity hockey for three years. He is the son of Keith andDawnMcEvoy.AfterattendingMCC,Roganwouldliketocontinuehiseducationat Western Michigan University.

Coach’s Comments - Once Rogan learns to pay attention to details and trust in his abilities he will be able to help this team!

StephonisthesonofPatandAmyChandonnet.StephongraduatedfromReeths-PufferHigh School.He played three years on the varsity baseball teamwhereheearnedAll-Conferenceallthreeyears,aswellasAll-DistrictandAll-Areahissenior season. Stephon has played travel baseball since he was in fourth grade. When not playing baseball, Stephon spends time at the beach and with friends. AfterMuskegon,StephonplansontransferringtoFerrisStateUniversitytostudyPharmacy.

Coach’s Comments - Stephon had a great freshman year as our D.H. against lefties. He now must perform as the full-time left-fielder. We expect him to perform well!

CollinAdamsisagraduatefromMonaShores.HecomestoMuskegonCommunityCollege as a left handed pitcher. While in high school, Collin spent three years at WesternMichigan Christian high school and finished his senior year atMonaShores.Hehasbeenplayingbaseballsincetheageof4andpitchingsincetheageof9.Collinisverythankfulfortheopportunitytocontinueplayingbaseballhereat Muskegon Community College.

Jason is a graduate of Muskegon Catholic Central where he was a varsity athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. Jason will continue his education and baseball career at Grand Valley State University.

Coach’s Comments - Jason needs to knock in runs for us in the center of the line-up for our team to be successful. He has all the skills to be able to help us in many ways. If he is successful, we will be successful.

Coach’s Comments - Damon has all the tools to be one of the better pitchers in Muskegon CC history. How quickly he learns to control the running game and use his offspeed pitches will determine how quickly he helps this year.

HunteristhesonofBrianandGeorgiaStinger.HunterisagraduateofPetoskeyHigh School where he played shortstop. After high school, Hunter went toConcordiaUniversity.Afterhisfreshmanyear,HuntertransferredtoCornerstoneand instead of sitting out a year and not playing baseball, Hunter transferredhalfway through his sophomore year to MCC.

Coach’s Comments - Hunter brings great defense and good speed to the table. How much he plays will be determined by how much he can improve in hitting.

Coach’s Comments - Joey can run and play defense. He will back up Kory and Stephon and also will see time as a courtesy runner. For him to play more he will have to hit better.

Coach’s Comments - Josh will bat in the middle of the line-up and lead an inexperienced pitching staff. Coming into the season he is our most important player and needs a good year for us to achieve our goals.

BrodyisthesonofEdandDianeAnderson.BrodyhasanolderbrotherJordan,who played baseball at MCC and now plays at Davenport University. Brody is a graduateofGrandHavenHigh School.Brodywould like to continueplayingbaseball after MCC but if he cannot, he plans on attending Grand Valley State University.

Coach’s Comments - Brody will stabilize our bullpen and just like last year will be used in long relief out of the bullpen. He will pitch some important innings for us, as he did last year.

Brad graduated from Traverse City Central.HeplayedonthevarsitybaseballteamforthreeyearsandAll-ConferenceandAll-Districthissenioryear.AfterMuskegon,Bradwouldliketocontinuetoplaybaseball at a four year collegeoruniversity and get his bachelor’s degreein criminal justice. Brad would like to thank his family, friends, teammates, and coaches for helping him through the years.

Coach’s Comments - Brad has worked very hard to get into the top 4. He must be more consistent with all his pitches to be able to help us. We are counting on him!

He is a graduate of Reeths-PufferHighSchool.JakeplayedthreeyearsonthevarsitybaseballteamwherehereceivedAll-ConferenceandAll-Areahonorshissenioryear.WhenJakeisnotonthediamond,heenjoyshunting,fishing,andcreatingmemorieswiththepeoplethat are closest to him. Jake is currently undecided on his major, but does plan onattendingafourinstitutiontocontinuehiseducation.Hewouldliketogiveaspecial thanks to his parents, his older brother, and former coaches for helping him succeed.
