There’s a great deal more to Muskoka than stunning scenery, crystal clear lakes and fresh air. Add to this picture an enticing mix ofexcellent dining, cultural and golf experiences, and it’s easy to see why Muskoka is undoubted-ly one of the world’s most popular destinations for travelers seeking a little down time. Located just two hours north of Toronto, Canada’s largest city, a visit to Muskoka is like being transported to a different place and time. The region’s endless rocky backdrop of exposed granite – known as the Canadian Shield –

dates back 1.5 billion years to when the earth’s crust was formed. Topping this rugged natural beauty are the numerous cool, deep lakes left behind by the massive glaciers that shaped the land mere millions of years ago.

But not only does Muskoka look different, it sounds different, too. From the haunting callof a loon echoing across a lake to the gentle rustle of a breeze in the trees or the lapping of water tickling the shoreline, Muskoka also offers the ultimate soundtrack to your vacationexperience. “Just two hours by car – but a world

away – from power- house Toronto beats the heart of Ontario’s cottage country, Muskoka. Families havegathered here for generations to revel in true wilderness. This is a place that massages the senses: the smell of pine with soft sand and needles underfoot, early mornings watch the sun burn the mist off a glassy lake, hearing the loons as they float by.”

The region’s beginnings as a modern dayvacation destination can in fact be traced back to the mid-1800s with the arrival of thousands of immigrants from Europe. Lured by the promise of free land, they tried their best to farm the land, an all but impossible task due to the ever-present Canadian Shield. Some of the savvier settlers, however, made the best of things, encouraging sportsmen from Toronto and the US to travel north to hunt and fish.

Demand soon grew as these same sportsmen brought their families with them, leading to a dramatic expan-sion of lodges and resort accommo-dations. Things have come a long way since then. Today, Muskoka is widely regarded as one of the world’s top

vacation destinations – not only did Muskoka host the 2010 G8 Summit, but for two consecutive years (2011/2012), National Geographic Traveler recognized Muskoka as a top vacation destination.

Despite the thousands of visitors that visit the region each year, there is plenty of room foreveryone in Muskoka. The region stretches across some 4,700 sq. kms, leaving space enough for an incredible diversity of fauna and flora. Stop for a hike and you’ll find yourself immersed in a wonderland of spruce, jack pine, poplar, tamarack, balsam and birch, and count-less wildflowers, including magnificent displays of orchids, which provide an incredible carpet of colour to these forest floors.

Muskoka is also home to many differentwalking, crawling and flying creatures, including some 250 or so species of birds, more than 50 different types of mammals, and 25 species of amphibians. While spotting a moose or bear isn’t guaranteed, a wander through the woods will likely result in you catching a glimpse of an otter or beaver, a woodpecker or a heron or perhaps perhaps even deer… The list is as endless as the vast variety of things there are to do during your visit to Muskoka!

“In the past decade, Muskoka’s charms have expanded to include excellent golf courses, soothing spas, and top notch restaurants. While the region is popular in summer, when families congregate at the resorts and Hollywood celebrities lounge at their lakeside “cottages,” this is a great area to visit at any time of year.”

Watercraft of all shapes and sizes scurry across Muskoka’s endless waterways, whether classic wooden motorboats, powerboats or sailing vessels, as well people-powered craft like canoes and kayaks. To satisfy the demand for the casual boater, the region’s many marinas provide rentals and tours, as well as boater licenses and training.

When it comes to exploring Muskoka by water, the region’s bigger lakes – LakesMuskoka, Rosseau and Joseph, along with Lake of Bays and Lakes Peninsula, Fairy and Mary – are all easily accessible. All are perfect for day-trips or even weekend getaways by boat, with plenty of places to dock for a meal or a spot of sightseeing. Muskoka’s lakes are also popular for wakeboarding and waterski-ing, as well as for extreme water sports like knee boarding or parasailing.

Another great way to enjoy Muskoka is aboard a cruise vessel. The best known is the Royal Mail Ship Segwun, North America’s oldest still operating steamship. RMS Segwun offers short sightseeing tours, longer lunch and dinner cruises, and even overnight adventures including accommodations at an historic resort. Magnificent Metal – Muskoka Artist Sculpts Wildlife Out Of Steel.

Muskoka has long been home to creative types. From artists to writers and all stops in between, the region and its stunning beauty has proven both a draw and an inspiration to people with an artistic streak ever since those first intrepid travellers visited over 150 years ago.

One of the most fascinating of Muskoka’s current crop of artists is sculptor Hilary Clark Cole. A resident of the region since 1971, Clark Cole’s spectacular metal sculptures grace many private collections, as well as public and corporate locations both in Can-ada and overseas. From her realistic life-size depictions of wolves, bears and moose – magnificent creatures made all the more real by the weathered, rusty finish provided courtesy of mother nature – to three-dimensional depictions of everything from people to trees and flowers, Clark Cole’s work is a celebration of a deep-rooted connection to the environment around her.

Working predominantly in hand built welded steel, as well as in cast limited edition bronzes, her unique metal sculp-tures come in all shapes and sizes, and cover all manner of subject matter – a fact that allows Clark Cole to include, on

occasion, a variety of different metals in addition to the predomi-nant steel, including copper and brass. One of Clark Cole’s most spectacular works – and one of her most recent – is an incredibly detailed full-size Muskox. Taking a year and a half to complete, this piece weighs in at a hefty 1600lbs.

The Muskox is currently on show at Chapel Gallery in Bracebridge, and Hilary Clark Cole’s work can be seen at Penny Varney Gallery in Gravenhurst and the Algonquin Art Centre in Algonquin Park. For further details, visit www.hilaryclarkcole.com. 6

Small Town Feel – Muskoka’s Communities Charm Their Guests.

Nestled amidst its never-ending forests and perched on the shores of its pristine lakes, Muskoka’s exciting small towns and communities all have something special to offer vacationers. In

all, this vast region boasts 17 towns and villages, each with its own distinctive flavour, each unmistakably Muskoka and each just waiting to be explored.

Port Carling is a great place to start your small town Muskoka adventure. Situated between lakes Muskoka and Joseph, this picturesque two-time winner of Canada’s Communities in Bloom community is as popular with cottagers as it is with day-trippers and resort guests. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to linger as you take in the busy locks – especially when the historic RMS Segwun passes through – and eclectic stores, galleries and eateries along its long, always busy main street.

Over on the north western tip of Lake Muskoka, Bala, too, has many art studios and galleries, including Iroquois Artisans, a unique gallery devoted to works by First Nations artists. Bala is also famous for its ever-popular Cranberry Festival, a celebration of the

wonderful fruit that draws crowds each fall from across Ontario. A little further east sit the hamlets of Honey Harbour, MacTier and Port Severn located on the edge of Georgian Bay and its 30,000 islands.

It’s extremely easy to take in more than one Muskokan community in a day, regardless of the season. Why not visit in the fall and spend a day visiting places like Baysville, Dorset and Dwight as you take in the spectacular colours and don’t forget winter. Most small towns in Muskoka embrace winter, celebrating the snowy season withcarnivals, Santa Claus parades, sleigh rides and other fun family events.

Cottage Life – Capturing That Special Muskoka Feeling.

There’s little doubt that Muskoka’s influence extends far beyond its borders. From chairs to cottage apparel, the brand that is Muskoka has left its mark on everything from attire to many-a home or resort with a patio or dock, wherever in the world it might be located.

So special is that unique Muskoka flare that it has even inspired its own design movement. Not only do the region’s many excellent builders and developers offer clients a cottage twist – be it the inclusion of rustic timber arches over doorways and windows, or the use of logs and

rough hewn wood – but a bevy of top designers and architects have also sprung up to serve the public’s insatiable desire for all-things Muskoka. Many specialty stores also cater to this demand, from trading-post style affairs to establishments as big as a city-department store, chock-a-block full of everything from clothing to canoes.

Cottages and cottage-style resorts, too, are plentiful across Muskoka, and have been

a part of the fabric of life in Ontario, if not Canada, for close to 150 years. Running the gamut from cozy cabins on smaller boat-free lakes to stunning estates and compounds on the

largest lakes, Muskoka has been attracting visitors for decades, all of them seeking the same thing: whether cottager or vacationer, they’re all wanting to simply relax and unwind while enjoying the region’s spectacular scenery, invigorating air and refreshing waters.

Whatever your preference – whether you choose to be a full-time or part-time cottager, or are simply wanting to add a cottage flavor to your home – Muskoka has something for everyone.

When it’s time to find the perfect spot in which to stay in Muskoka – whether for a night or a week or more – the region doesn’t disappoint. With well over 80 accommodation options ranging from luxurious 5-star all-inclusive resorts, family-run lodges, quaint inns, historic B&Bs and rustic cottage resorts, Muskoka’s got something for everyone. In fact, many of the same

inns that welcomed those very first visitors are still going strong today, some well over 100 years and stand-ing testament to the reputation the region has earned as one of North America’s top tourist destinations.

If you’re looking for a littlepampering while you’re here, Muskoka’s major resorts maintain first-rate spas, while many of our smaller lodges provide in-room treatments from local practitioners

when a massage or pedicure is needed. The traditional spa package needn’t be so traditional, with many resorts stepping up the spa experience a notch with innovative packages focusing on whatever seems to be ailing you and “spa-ing” needn’t be a solo activity any more, with many locations now offering special couples packages that include luxury rooms and treatments.

Whether for a day, a weekend or even longer, Muskoka’s resorts and lodges have the perfect accommodation package for you.

Eco-friendly Foxwood Resort

Located on Lake of Bays near Dwight, Foxwood Resort has been taking great strides towards becoming one of Muskoka’s most eco-friendly family vacation destinations. And its efforts are paying off: Foxwood recently received recognition from none other than the Audubon Green Leaf Eco Rating Program for its eco efficiency. This prestigious “4 Green Leaf ” status covers energy efficiency, resource conservation, pollution prevention and environmental management.

As part of its ongoing efforts to protect the resort’s natural surroundings, Foxwood has committed to practice a number of earth friendly policies, including

Severn Lodge – A Historic Cottage Resort In Muskoka.

Severn Lodge dates back to the mid-1800’s when it served as the location for the Georgian Bay Lumber Company. When the logging era concluded, the location was purchased by a group representing a private club from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania known as the Mordolphton Club.

The Mordolphtons arrived by private Pullman coach to the CNR train station in Waubaushene on Georgian Bay where their luggage was transferred to an awaiting steam ship which took them to Port Severn. From there they portaged over the waterfalls and rapids to an awaiting boat for the final leg of their journey to the northern shores of Gloucester Pool. What takes approximately 15 minutes today by car, took nearly a half day by boat.

Members of the Mordolphtons visited during the summers for many years, being attracted to the fine fishing that could be had in the pristine waters of Gloucester Pool. Then, in the early 1920’s the property was purchased by Glen Crummel and George Barrick of Akron, Ohio. They named it Severn Lodge, and opened it to the public.

In 1928 William H. “Bill” Breckbill, then a high school student from Canton, Ohio, began working summers at the Lodge. His life-long love affair with Severn Lodge had now begun. Return-ing each summer, he eventually became the manager, and then

purchased it in the fall of 1936. In 1940 he married Jeanne E. Krammes. In 1973 their son Ron joined the family business, and later married Cindee. In 1977 their other son Rick and his wife Sue joined the business.

During the early years, guests arrived by train and steamer, but as time passed and the road systems were developed, guests could drive to Port Severn. From here our launch would take them on a 45 minute boat ride to the Lodge. Pick-ups were at 11 am and 5 pm. Some times, there were so many guests arriving that a second launch was taken to Port Severn just for their luggage.

In the early 1960’s Hwy 69 (Hwy 400 today) and the White’s Falls were built allowing guests to drive even closer. Since White’s Falls was only 10 minutes by boat, our launch made more frequent pick-ups. In the fall of 1983 the White’s Falls Rd was extended to the Big Chute giving the resort road access. The start of a new erahad come!

Clevelands House Renewal Continues Muskoka Tradition Of Excellence.

A funny thing happened on the way to the printers when Charles Minett opened his resort in Muskoka in 1883. Asked to label the resort’s first guest register “Cleeve Lands” after Minett’s birthplace in England, the printer inadvertently changed the name to Clevelands. The mistake was never corrected, and 130 years later Clevelands House – which is midway through a substantial program of exciting renovations – remains a name synonymous with Muskoka’s long tradition of hospitality.

Set on 408-acres with over 923 m (3,000 ft) of waterfront on the western shores of Lake Rosseau, the resort’s old-fashioned charm is being greatly enhanced by the upgrades. While future upgrades will see the renovation of all guest rooms to reflect a cozy authentic Muskoka cottage experience, the original 500-seat dining room has already been replaced with two exciting new restaurants, including Muskoka’s first true steak house. Both restaurants will be helmed by the resort’s new Executive Chef, Jason MacArthur, former Chef at the Lake Joseph Club’s Water’s Edge restaurant.

Also new for 2013 – and part of the resort’s ongoing efforts to satisfy the ever-changing needs of its guests – is the opportunity to enjoy shorter stay packages, as well the traditional all-inclusive

vacation packages. Expect to find other great changes this year, too: for the first time in many years, Clevelands House will be open for the Victoria Day long weekend, and a number of exciting new seasonal packages have been created. In addition, customized wedding packages, group and corporate programs (including fun family reunions) have all been added to the resort’s offerings. Clevelands House also has an excellent reputation for the quality of the sports and activities on hand for guests to enjoy. These include tennis (the resort boasts 16 courts), golf on a private nine-hole golf course (as well as play privileges at the neighbouring Nick Faldo designed 18 hole The Rock), swimming (four pools and four hot tubs), fitness facilities and a sauna. Boat rentals, cruises, and water-skiing are also available.

Kids are also well looked after at Clevelands House. Kid’s programs cater to all ages from newborns to teens and revolve around the resort’s one-acre Play World and sports facilities, including two kids’ pools. Add movies, arts and crafts, entertainers, sports – including a waterski and wakeboard school, as well as a tennis academy – and nature exploration to this extensive list of kids’ activities, and you’re all set to begin your very own Muskoka family vacation tradition.

Seeking more tranquil outdoor pursuits? Most Muskoka com-munities have long-established winter festivals, often hosted in partnership with area resorts. Other accessible activities include skating, pond hockey, ice fishing, dogsledding, winter horseback trail rides and curling. Of course, the region offers many-a great hill if you want to keep it simple and do things the old fashioned way… all you need is a toboggan, and a flask of hot chocolate to help thaw out.

Snowy Muskoka – The Way Winter Used To Be.

Muskoka is also an important link in Ontario’s extensive snowmobile network. More than 1,600kms of trails crisscross the region, and for those who don’t own a ‘sled’, machine and

equipment rentals are available from most marinas. Along with your snowmobile, you’re also provided with a warm snowmobile suit, boots, gloves and helmet, as well as expert training before being turned loose on the trails.

World Class Events And Attractions .

Muskoka has no shortage of incredible things to do and see, and is widely regarded as being home to some of Ontario’s best events and attractions. Museums such as Bethune House and Muskoka Heritage Place showcase cottage country’s rich history, while nature lovers come to enjoy the region’s great outdoors – Muskoka’s many parks boast countless lakes, rivers, beaches, waterfalls, campsites and hiking trails, and you can also get close to nature at places like Muskoka Wildlife Centre or the Torrance Barrens, Canada’s first dark sky reserve.

Another great way to experience these natural attractions is with a guide, such as those offered by wilderness expert Robin Tapley – his

Nature Trail adventures offer a year round soft wilderness nature program for all ages, including a spot of stargazing and if you enjoy a little running commentary while on the water, try any one of the region’s 10 excellent boat cruise companies – cruises range from short 1 hour excursions to epic three day outings on the waterways of Muskoka.

For those seeking an even more exhilarating experience, many Muskoka attractions provide exciting adventures suitable for the whole family. From waterskiing and wakeboarding lessons to a thrilling outdoor adventure aboard one of Era Tours’ rock buggies or Back Country Tours’ ATV adventures, there’s never a dull moment for the young (and the young at heart) in Muskoka.

No trip to Muskoka would be complete without visiting Santa’s Village Family Entertainment Park in Bracebridge, welcoming kids of all ages for over 50 years. A trip to Santa’s Village includes the

All Steamed Up… Courses Offer Unique Steam Train Experience

Casey Jones, eat your heart out! Visitors to Muskoka now

have an exciting opportunity to fulfill that childhood fantasy of driving a steam train of their very own… at least for a

day. This unique opportunity to be an engineer takes place at Muskoka Heritage Place in Huntsville aboard the historic

1926 Portage Flyer steam locomotive (or, alternatively, a 1949 diesel electric locomotive), once part of the world’s shortest commercial railway operating between North and South

Portage near Dwight from 1904 and 1959.

Participants in the Engineer for a Day program receive full training aboard the historic engine, learning everything from

engineer procedures to railway protocol to handling the controls. All would-be engineers are required to first pass a pre-screening interview, as well as a written exam (study

materials are supplied in advance) before receivingprofessional practical instruction and learning the ropes.

The big day begins at 9 am with an orientation session

followed by the exam. Once that’s done, the real fun starts when your certified engineer instructor allows you to take the controls – before you know, it you’ll be chugging along with a train full of passengers in tow. The whole awesome experience wraps up at 4 pm, by which time you’ll be more than a little

sad your time as an engineer has come to an end.

The cost for the day-long course is $200, and participants must be at least 16 years of age. Muskoka Heritage Place’s rail

season runs from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving, andregistration opens on March 14th (Casey Jones’ birthday).

For further details and to book your unforgettable engineer experience, contact Ron Gostlin at

For the real adventurist check out Treetop Trekking aerial park, Huntsville, at Deerhurst Resort, a treetop trek through one of the highest adventure parks inOntario. You’ll experience zip lines, wobbly bridges, monkey cables, balance beams and Tarzan ropes… and exciting nighttime options are also available.

Finally, try to plan your visit around one or more of the unique events that make Muskoka so special. From artist studio tours and art and craft shows, food and comedy festivals, in-water boat shows like the Antique and Classic Boat Show, to fall fairs and festivals like the famous Bala Cranberry festival, Muskoka has everything you need to have some family fun. Rich With History – Museums Offer Glimpse Into Storied Muskoka’s Past.

Muskoka has a very colourful and well-documented history, and numerous museums have been established to preserve the region’s rich cultural and social heritage. It’s a history that involves people from around the globe: from the early British settlers responsible for starting the resort industry in the 19th Century, to their American guests, and even the Norwegians who used the Muskoka Airport as a training base during World War II. Little wonder then, that Muskoka continues to welcome visitors from far and wide.

Nine museums and historic sites are open to the public in Muskoka, each offering an array of educational adventures and family fun. Transportation fans are particularly well-catered to. In Gravenhurst alone, the Muskoka Wharf is home to Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre and its superb collection of historic wooden boats, and is also the home port of the historic steamship, RMS Segwun. Gravenhurst also boasts a museum dedicated to Canadian doctor Norman Bethune, considered a hero in China for his humanitarian deeds, and the lovely town of Bala just 25 minutes away has a museum dedicated to Anne of Green Gables

Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site

Looking for an inspiring family experience? Visit the birthplace of Dr. Norman Bethune and discover the remarkable achievements of this great Canadian Doctor.

Internationally known, this humanitarian, battlefront surgeon, activist, inventor, teacher and artist remains arevered hero to the Chinese

people 74 years after his death for his medical contribution during the Sino-Japanese War.

But Bethune did not just leave his mark there. Follow his blazing trail that started in Canada and took him to the battlegrounds of World War I and to Spain during theSpanish Civil War. You will be amazed at what one manaccomplished in his lifetime!

You will learn about his life and times in stunning new exhibits displayed in our brand new Visitor Centre located at 297 John Street North, beside his birthplace, a

beautifully restored Victorian Manse in the heart of Gravenhurst. The new exhibits offer engaging, interactive experi-ences and showcase his extraordinary achievements, while offering insight on his motivations and his legacy.

Be inspired by his humanitarian spirit, reflecting the profound effect of one man’s quest for social justice and the greater good of mankind. Those values, exemplified in the accomplishments and sacrifices of many Canadians heroes like Bethune, have in many ways defined our national image. Be intrigued by his controversial and enduring legacy, for although he was not with-out flaws, his life is proof that one resolute man can make a difference in a world torn by conflicts.

Open June through October, the site also offers a multi-purpose gallery available for rental, which will showcase other temporary exhibits and provides opportunities for lectures, activities and meetings set in this extraordinary and powerful ambiance. This National Historic Site is a stirring “must see” for the whole familyPlan your visit at www.pc.gc.ca/Bethune.

creator, Lucy MaudMontgomery, who used to cottage in Muskoka.

A little further north in Huntsville is the delightful Muskoka Heritage Place with its pioneer exhibits, as well as the vintage Portage Flyer steam train. In Bracebridge, the town’s past as a major log-ging and transportation hub is celebrated in historic walks and heritage sites around the beautiful waterfalls at the heart of the town.

Finally, be sure to pay a visit to the Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling. Located on beautiful Island Park adjacent the town locks, this exquisite museum perfectly reflects the area’s rich past.

Boat Cruising – Land of Sparkling Waters, Blue Skies And Majestic Pines.

If you do not own your own boat or even if you do, the best way to see the grandeur of the lakes of Muskoka with their remarkable boathouses and majestic summer homes is from the deck of a tour boat, whether it is a private charter or a public cruise. The cruises range from sightseeing tours along the fabled Millionaires’ Row, lunch and dinner cruises, and overnight adventures which include accommodations at a historic resort. A cruise in Muskoka is an experience to be cherished forever.

The oldest and the most iconic of the cruise ships is theR.M.S. Segwun which was built in 1887 and has the distinction of being the oldest operating hand-fed coal-fired steamship in North America. This 99 passenger ship plies its trade from

Gravenhurst’s Muskoka Wharf along with its sister ship the Wenonah II. They have a variety of sailing times. If you are in the Bracebridge area the 300 passenger Lady Muskoka offers an excursion down the Muskoka River and out into Lake Muskoka. While visiting the Hub of the Lakes, Port Carling, you have the option of taking a number of different cruise boats, one of which is the 40 passenger pontoon boat operated by Waterway Tours. Waterway Tours offer a number of different sailing times.

However, if you are interested in a luncheon cruise or a more intimate cruise, there is the 45 passenger Peerless II, a resurrected B/A boat that supplied fuel on the lakes or the more intimate 12 passenger Idyllwood which operates out of different ports of call depending on the day. All of the above boats are Transport Canada certified and available for private functions and charters.

If you are on the Georgian Bay side of Muskoka and want to see the ruggedness of the coast there you will find two excellent tour boats operating in different areas. The 550 passenger Island Queen operates twice daily tours out of the harbor at Parry

Sound viewing Georgian Bay’s 30,000 Islands Biosphere Reserve.

The Miss Midland sets sail with different departure times out of Midland along the southeastern side of Georgian Bay and takes you towards Beausoleil Island. Many smaller vessels, including pontoon boats, classic wooden launches and vintage yachts, are also available across Muskoka for intimate family cruises.

No Matter What Level Of Golf You Play - Muskoka Has A Course For You.

“Without question Muskoka is one of the world’s leading golf destinations and is the

favourite destination of our clients, unrivalled for it’s beauty, quality of golf courses and it’s

charm...it exudes a sense of well-being, rarely found anywhere else in the world”.

Gary Stangoe, Across the Fairways - England

When it comes to a golfing experience, Muskoka, with its many outstanding facilities, ranks in there with the top few destinations of North America. Playing any of Muskoka’s courses is both a delightful and memorable experience. Each course offers its own uniqueness from the vistas and views that you have from elevated tee blocks to the outcropping of the granite rocks and the tree-lined lush fairways which lead to large greens with subtle breaks. There is nothing like starting your day standing on a tee block overlooking a valley with the warm morning sun shining and a fine morning mist blanketing the fairway or, standing on the green readying your putter while hearing a light rustle in the trees and noticing a couple of deer making up the gallery. One thing you will not see on a Muskoka course is pesky alligators or cotton-mouth snakes. However, it is common to see deer, the occasional moose and even the odd bear playing through.

What makes Muskoka different from other course destinations is the quality and quantity of courses. Muskoka has over 25 courses to challenge you, courses like Muskoka Bay Club, (which is ranked as one of Canada’s 10 best), Taboo, The Rock, Rocky Crest, Deerhurst, Bigwin, Diamond in the Ruff, South Muskoka, North Granite Ridge, Muskoka Highlands, Windermere, Huntsville Downs and Bracebridge Golf Club. The list reads like the who’s who of golf. Muskoka proudly offers first-class courses for any level of golfer.

MUSKOKA

Muskoka Has It All

Muskoka – a rare gem in the Canadian landscape with its indicolite blue lakes and uvarovite green towering pines, supported by the vast Canadian Shield with its outcroppings of hardened grey and red granite.

Muskoka reaches from the crystal blue waters and rugged islands of Georgian Bay on Muskoka’s west coast to the forest covered terrain of Algonquin Park on its northeastern point and then from the Severn River which bounds Muskoka’s southern extremity to its rolling highlands landscape to the north. Covering an area of 4761 sq km and dotted with 600 lakes, it has six municipalities comprised of a number of towns and villages which make up the tapestry of Muskoka.

Muskoka has been recognized as an vacation destination for 150 years playing host to thousands of outdoorsmen, hunters, fisherman, social clubs, cottagers and resort goers. By the late 1800’s Muskoka had evolved to become the place to go to be pampered by the staff at one of its 80 many fine

resorts. W. H Pratt, one of the areas very first resort owners (1871), stated “treat the guest like royalty,” which became the motto for Muskoka resorts ever since.

The area with its abundance of lakes offers up the oppor-tunity for all sorts of outdoor adventure and fun in all four season. From swimming, boating, seadooing and fishing in the summer to ice fishing, ice skating, pond hockey and outdoor curling in the winter. For the land lover there are hiking and biking trails in the summer and snowshoeing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. Both the summer and the winter offer some exciting attractions. In the summer you have Santa’s Village, concerts, festivals, treetop trekking, art shows great golfing and boat cruises; in the winter you have downhill skiing, treetop trekking, tub-ing, outdoor skating trails, dog sledding, etc. The choices are endless.

For the indoor enthusiast there are a fine assortment of resorts that offer relaxing lounges, dining and spas. Muskoka has something for everyone.

Georgian Bay’s rugged good looks Muskoka’s western most section, Georgian Bay features some of the Muskoka’s most ruggedly beautiful scenery with mile after mile of sometimes barren but always stunning shoreline and windswept islands with their sculptured pines. It’s a breathtaking environment, one that’s as rich in wilder-ness as it is in unforgettable ‘Kodak moments’. It’s also a place that has greatly influenced many well-known painters, among them Canada’s famous Group of Seven. Even the most cursory of glances at their work leaves little doubt that they were all greatly affected by Georgian Bay’s stunning vistas, crooked pines and endless rock. Today, Georgian Bay Islands National Park consists of 63 of the region’s 30,000-plus islands, and is part of the world’s largest freshwater archipelago – an area so important and unique that it’sbeen designated a world Biosphere Reserve by the UnitedNations.

Georgian Bay Township is also home to the Canadian Heritage protected Trent-Severn Waterway with its many locks, dams and waterfalls. Another water-themed structure unique to the township is the extraordinary Big Chute Marine Railway. The only railway of its kind still operating in North America, this mammoth piece ofmachinery transports boats of all sizes in a giant carriage along rails between Gloucester Pool and the Upper Severn River, a gravity-defying trek up a 19-metre rise that’s thrilling to watch.

Off-road adventure fans, too, love exploring Georgian Bay Township’s extensive network of trails. Whether an ATV-er or a snowmobiler, the region offers seemingly endless op-portunities to put your machine through its paces, and for newbies to these sports, many area resorts offer play’n’stay packages including everything from equipment rentals to permits.

GRAVENHURST

Muskoka’s Gateway –All Roads Lead to Gravenhurst

Best known as the ‘Gateway to Muskoka’ – there’s even an archway to prove it – Gravenhurst is the first of Muskoka’s big three towns you’ll want to explore. Not only is it the first community you’ll come across when entering the region from the south, it’s also home to one of the liveliest water-fronts… well, make that two waterfronts.

Gull Lake Park is a popular family gathering spot due to its safe beach and safe swimming, as well as for its excellent Sunday evening Music on the Barge program. Now in its 54th year, musicians perform everything from the big band swing sound to jazz, folk, and classic rock from a specially designed stage suspended over the water just a few yards off shore.

Across town, Muskoka Wharf with its’ meandering board walk by the restaurants, retail stores and the museum all along the shores of Lake Muskoka is a wonderful way to pass the day. The wharf is also the home port of the RMS Seg-wun, the oldest steamship still operating in North America. The Segwun and its sister ship Wenonah II, offer some of

the best views of Lakes Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph. The steam-theme is very much in evidence throughout the Wharf, from the architecture to the steamship themed playground.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre. This year-round celebration of Gravenhurst’s rich boat building history contains numerous displays of sleek mahogany launches in slips at the museum docks.

The Wharf, along with its 615 metre long boardwalk, is a focal point for a number of other great events including the Gravenhurst Farmers Market, the Antique and Classic Boat Show, Ribfest and the Dockside Festival of the Arts.

Gravenhurst also just so happens to be the birthplace of humanitarian Dr. Norman Bethune, and the house in which he was born is now a national historic site and museum. Another heritage building to visit is the Gravenhurst Opera House. Built in 1901, this majestic building graces the community’s uptown shopping area and is a venue for both musical and theatrical events throughout the year.

The “Big Three” Lakes – Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph Whether you visit the Township of Muskoka Lakes for a lei-surely day-long car trip or spend weeks listening to loons at a cottage or a lodge, you will never forget the experience. Lakes Muskoka, Joseph and Rosseau offer breath-taking vistas of scenery that cry out for your camera. Antique shops, restau-rants and special attractions compete for your attention.

One of the best kept secrets about Muskoka is that Lucy Maud Montgomery, beloved author of “Anne of Green Gables”, loved its rivers, its lakes and its pines. She based one of her best books called “The Blue Castle”, upon a two-week holiday at a Bala lodge in 1922, setting the love story in Muskoka rather than Prince Edward Island. Bala’s Museum with Memories of Lucy Maud Montgomery, which tells the story behind “The Blue Castle”, has attracted well over 100,000 visitors from every corner of the globe since it opened in July, 1992. Many thousands of children have taken advantage of the museum’s “Anne of Green Gables” photo opportunities, dressing up in costume for their tours.

The Township of Muskoka Lakes has many other surprises, including the annual Cranberry Festival in Bala each

October, walking trails, artists’ studios, cranberry marshes, the Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling, antique and craft shows and postcard scenery. You can disappear into Hardy Lake Park for half an hour or a whole afternoon to hike its nature trails.

Bala, known far and wide as Ontario’s cranberry capital, is well worth visiting. Families can picnic and relax beside its falls, looking down the Moon River. The world’s best dance bands, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Guy Lombardo, once came here to Dunn’s Pavilion which is now the Kee to Bala, offering concerts through the summer. A newly created theatre company attracts patrons from as far away as Toronto. Meanwhile, just outside of town are two cranberry marshes.

Port Carling, which prides itself on being “the hub of the lakes”, links Lakes Muskoka and Rosseau through historic locks where you can see a regular parade of pleasure craft and larger cruisers. If you’re lucky, you may even see the R.M.S. Segwun or one of the many cruise boats passing from one lake to the other. Not far from Port Carling are a series of villages with their own attractions and special features, including Glen Orchard, Minett, Windermere and Milford Bay which are all worth a visit.

Bracebridge –Muskoka’s Heart and Soul Located in the very heart of Muskoka, postcard-perfect Bracebridge is a vibrant community crisscrossed by hundreds of kilometres of trails and waterways. Long a popular vacation destination – the town sprung up when the first trains and steamships began ferrying travellers northwards from Toronto and the US – Bracebridge today is a vibrant hub of activity offering the very best of Muskoka.

As the heart of Muskoka’s officially designated ‘Arts Community’, Bracebridge is a cultural focal point with a vibrant group of diverse artists and artisans. The work of these talented individuals can be found in the town’s many galleries, as well as the always-busy “Art in the Heart” show held each summer to showcase the cream of Muskoka’s emerging artists.

Bracebridge is also famous for Santa’s Village, the ‘official’ summer home of Father Christmas. As well as hanging out

with the big guy himself in his festive theme park, kids of all ages can try their hand at a variety of other exciting activities, including a tree-level aerial walkway and go karts.

Bracebridge is also a wonderful place to explore on foot. A good place to start is Bracebridge Falls at the bottom of Manitoba Street.

After taking in the breathtaking waterfalls, head north up the town’s main thoroughfare, making sure you spend time en-joying the first-rate shops and restaurants with their charm-ing vintage architectural facades.

Next, take a little detour and head down the side streets and alleys – it’s like stepping back in time as you meander past stately heritage homes and churches. Be sure to visit after nightfall, too: the town’s clock, bell tower, courthouse and “silver bridge” are outlined in unique, colourful lighting (and be sure to come back to check out the stunning Christmas display!).

HUNTSVILLE

Muskoka’s Cultural Capital – Huntsville celebrates the arts withnumerous festivals

Muskoka’s largest municipality may also be its liveliest. With a population of 18,000, Huntsville boasts an exciting mix of world-class entertainment and cultural activities. A dynamic mix of urban and rural attitudes, Huntsville features many wonderful examples of how heritage-style architecture can be melded with more modern sensibilities. Best of all, this unique package is all found in the midst of 144 lakes, the largest being the interconnecting Lakes Vernon, Fairy, Mary and Peninsula.

Little wonder, then, that Huntsville provides such a perfect backdrop for arts festivals. The largest of these is the year-round Festival of the Arts. Billing itself as a celebration of all things connected to arts and culture, the festival offers a particularly strong music component, highlighting all styles from jazz to pop to choral, as well as orchestral and classical. It’s also a popular supporter of live theatre and the visual arts,

with most events being held in the town’s state-of-the-art 400-seat Algonquin Theatre.

Celebrating 100 years of Tom Thomson painting in the area the town hostess a self guide walking tours featuring over 90 Group of Seven murals. For movie fans, fall marks the return of Film North, The Huntsville International Film Festival (mid-September). Now in its fourth year, Film North show-cases the very best of Canadian and international movies with an emphasis on environmental themes.

Like most Muskoka towns, Huntsville got its start as a lumber town before becoming a vibrant urban centre. To get a taste of what life must have been like back in those frontier days, Muskoka Heritage Place includes a variety of fully restored centuries-old pioneer buildings and displays. It’s also home to the fantastic Portage Flyer, the very same steam train that ferried visitors from the steamships of Lake of Bays to Peninsula Lake at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Lake of (Many) Bays – Endless Water Fun The Township of Lake of Bays, in the northeast corner of Muskoka between Huntsville and Algonquin Park, is home to three of the region’s most picturesque communities. The villages of Dorset, Dwight and Baysville are located along the lake’s more than 560 kms of shoreline. The large body of water the Township is named after – Lake of Bays – is in fact the second largest of Muskoka’s magnificent lakes, and offers some of the region’s best places to indulge yourself. And with its numerous sandy beaches and steep wooded hills, Lake of Bays always seems a little more laidback than Lake Muskoka.

The lake itself, dotted with countless classic cottages and his-toric lodges dating back well over a century, is a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts. From canoeing to kayaking,

waterskiing and wakeboarding, power boating and sailing, the lake’s plentiful bays and inlets are just begging to be explored. And when you’re done with all that water, there’s also numerous hiking and biking trails, incredible golfing on courses such as famous Bigwin Island, and in winter theregion’s a real draw for snowmobilers and cross country skiers.

Be sure to explore the villages themselves. Dwight is well known as a centre for canoe building and is home to a number of workshops, and also has one of the busiest family beaches in Muskoka. Dorset should be visited for its Lookout Tower and breathtaking views of the surrounding area, in addition to famous (and always bustling) Robinsons General Store. Finally, Baysville, at the southern-most tip of the lake, has a picture-perfect dam, the ideal spot for a picnic after taking in one of this busy community’s fun antique or art shows.

Algonquin Park – The Ultimate Outdoor Experience. Algonquin Park provides 7,725 square kilometers of striking unspoiled forests, lakes and rivers. The sounds of the loon echoing on the lake, a moose taking a leisurely meander through the lily ponds, and other stunning views offer a memory to last a lifetime.

Whether you are a hiker, paddler, outdoorsmen, a rugged deep woods camper, or enjoy a more moderate camping experience Algonquin has the sites and trails for you. Even if you enjoy the outdoors but camping is not your forté anymore and you prefer the luxury of a lodge on a lake, Algonquin, will answer your call.

Along the highway 60 corridor there are three magnificent lodges that can be accessed from this highway. Bartlett Lodge, has a wonderful range of accommodating cabins or you can treat yourself to the unique experience of luxurious platform tenting with a king size bed, full linen service and a deck overlooking a small bay on Cache Lake. Each of these tents even has its own individual 3 piece bathroom located beside the tent. Try out this Glamping which refers to their Tent & Breakfast offering. Then, just a few kilometers off the beaten track, lies a quiet, peaceful summer resort in the middle of the woods of Algonquin Park called Arowhon Pines. The great natural beauty of this resort is combined with a renowned kitchen, warm hospital-

ity and attentive service. Their accommodation are of rustic rooms in log cabins along the lakeshore. Three meals per day are served in their extraordinary heritage log dining room. Killarney Lodge is on the shores of Lake of Two Rivers, right in the heart of the park. For over 70 years, Killarney Lodge has been serving the park traveler. Take an opportunity to experience this unique wilderness area from the comfort of your own waterfront cabin. Discover miles of walking trails and bicycle routes. Enjoy a quiet paddle in a canoe, plan a longer outing with a delicious picnic lunch or enjoy fine country cuisine in there intimate dining room.

Yet not to worry if you are a novice at camping and canoeing but want to experience the adventure, there are a number of topnotch outfitters and guides in the park like Algonquin Outfitters, the Portage Store and Algonquin Bound Outfitters that will direct and lead you on a one day or multiday excursion to the interior of the park. When attending the park in the main seasons be sure to visit the Logging Museum and the Interpretive Centre.

The park is also a wonderful place for those who love winter camping. There is something inspiring about seeing and recognizing animal tracks in the snow, listening to the bird-song of wintery feathered friends, identifying other animal calls like the coyote or wolf or just admiring Mother Nature blanketing the park under a fresh layer of sparkling snow. They are easy to find. Just tie on your snowshoes and go for a morning stroll. Algonquin is truly a four seasons’ park. Who could ask for more?
