By Zarinah NadirFriday, February 1, 2013: History lovers and knowledge seekers from all walks of life were invited to kick off the start of African American History Month 2013 with a riveting lecture featuring renowned author and public speaker Amin Nathari, National Representative of the Islam in America Movement (IAM). The year 2010 marked the “anniversary” of two watershed, defining moments in not just African American history, but the history of America itself. At that point it was 45 years since the February 21, 1965 assassination of Malcolm X, and 35 years since the February 25, 1975 death of Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation of Islam and the subsequent ascension of his son (the late) Imam W. Deen Mohammed as leader of the organization. The latter event was the catalyst for what is widely considered to be the largest influx of Americans accepting and embracing traditional or “Sunni” Islam, and by most, the largest mass religious “conversion” in American history.Friday’s lecture was brought to you by the Tempe History Museum in coordination with the Museum’s 2007-2009 Muslim Advisory Group. This was the first part of Nathari’s two part National Book Tour “Making it Plain” in Tempe, Arizona. The lecture series was based on Nathari’s acclaimed book: 45, 35, Now.....The Continuum of Islam in America - Examining the Evolution of the Islamic Experience in 21st Century America (Sabree Press - 2011). Book signing, peach cobbler and bean pie followed the presentation. The community was also invited to attend Part 2 of the national

book tour held the following day, Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Arizona State University. The focus of Part 2 was Islam in America: Where are we today and where do we go from here? These events events were co-sponsored by the Islamic Social Services Association-USA’s Children of Adam Project. ISSA’s Children of Adam Project seeks to raise awareness about the intra-community diversity of Muslims in America. The aim is to disseminate knowledge about the various experiences of different ethnic groups that make up the American Muslim community so that empathy and understanding will be instilled within the community thus breeding mutual appreciation and support of each other. Additional sponsors of these events included the Muslim Law Students Association at ASU, the Muslim Students Association at ASU, the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Arizona, and the Arizona Muslim Historical Society.

By Heba Haleem“I’ll have a chicken breast, please,” says a middle-aged woman holding a baby with one arm and her plate with the other. She’s not at a café, or a restaurant. She resides in Watkin’s Homeless Shelter in Phoenix, in a small cubicle with all her belongings in one plastic box tucked away under a twin-sized cot. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, she feels blessed to be eating a hearty meal with her child. On the first Sunday of every month,

the American Muslim Women Association of Arizona serves meals at the Watkins Homeless Shelter, a shelter for single women and families in need. Founded in 1997, AMWA is a non-profit charitable organization that has taken on a philanthropic role in communities across Arizona. From pursuing refugee outreach to conducting food drives, AMWA aims to change our community for the better. This Sunday, a family sponsors the meal serving through AMWA. “Would you like a rice krispy bar?” one of the two-year old twins Sophia asks a shelter resident. Other volunteers serve potato salad and chicken, placing the edibles onto paper plates with gloved hands. The line moves steadily across the food-decked table as shelter residents take note of their options and thank the volunteers. After getting their plates filled, they head to the cafeteria tables to eat. Among the two-year-old twins volunteering today are their mom, dad, brother, grandma, grandpa, and another family- a mother and her three children. AMWA members Hanan and Christine both volunteer and supervise. “Volunteering here is something the whole family can do together”, says former AMWA president Hanan, “They really love it, and the children look forward to it. If you notice, we have dinner rolls and treats that are fun for them to hand out.” Halfway through the meal serving, an unexpected but heart-warming event occurs. Standing on of the cafeteria table, a resident shouts out “Thank you all so much for the

great lunch today!” Her voice echoes across the cafeteria as satisfied faces confirm the feeling. A shower of applause follows for the AMWA volunteers. “It makes you feel good”, says 6th grade volunteer Manal. “I’m so thankful”, adds AMWA member Christine. After everyone is served, Christine calls out for seconds. Then, it’s clean up time. The volunteers fold the tablecloths and throw away empty containers in the front part of the cafeteria room. The shelter residents, encompassing almost all the tables in the cafeteria, are munching with their friends and family members towards the back of the cafeteria. Smiles are at both

ends of the room. Watkin’s Homeless Shelter employee Erica has a personal connection with where she works. “I’m in school right now to become a social worker, so I’m already passionate about social services,” she says with a smile. When asked about the residents, she says, “a lot of them try to tell me their story, but I feel like they don’t have to because stuff happens. The economy could be bad towards anyone.” I ask Erica for a tour of the building, and we head past the cafeteria area to the back room, called “The Family Room”. Here, we see small cubicles filled with one or two small beds and a couple of plastic boxes each. To the right of this section is a lounge with books, a TV, and toys for children. We then make our way “Singles” room, packed with cots lined up in rows. It also has a lounge with couches, TV, and a shelf full of books. Next to the “Singles” room is the laundry room, with large washers and dryers that residents could use themselves. Outside, there is a small concrete basketball court where children are playing, and a few benches. Outside, on the opposite side of the building, is the smoking area. We walk back through the cafeteria and into a large, stainless steel kitchen next to the employee room. And soon, we are back to the cafeteria.AMWA volunteers pack up and get ready to leave Watkin’s Homeless Shelter. As they step into their vehicles and drive away, they know they leave a room full of happy Watkin’s shelter residents awaiting future Sundays with AMWA.

By Furdos NurhussenAfter the birth of her beautiful twin girls, Deborah Kaye Haniffa never imagined she would be left to care for them and her five-year-old son, Ibrahim, alone. She was shocked to find out her husband had left the country without notifying her.Deborah gave birth to Zahra and yara Haniffa, on March 11, 2012. The twins were born prematurely at 25 weeks and because they were born with a shared umbilical artery, several medical conditions followed suit. Deborah’s doctor informed her Zahra had a good chance at survival, but yara did not. “They told us you should contact your church or your temple to prepare for a funeral for her”, Deborah says.Thankfully, both lived but not without complications. Zahra and yara both received heart and eye surgery and needed multiple blood transfusions. The twins were repeatedly in and out of the hospital for weeks at a time throughout the year. During this time Zahra had received three stomach surgeries and suffered a near fatal cold.Deborah and her husband often argued during this time due to the stressful situation. Deborah’s mother-in-law was visiting from Sri Lanka which added to the stress. “My mother-in-law was here and that for me was a lot of pressure and anxiety because she never approved of our marriage because I had been married previously and I had two children from my first marriage. She hadn’t spoken to us for three years. So, there were some hard feelings there.”With time, Deborah’s relationship with her mother-in-law began to improve. Deborah was working on a letter to her mother-in-law to apologize and to ask for forgiveness. Deborah wanted her husband to translate the letter into Tamil for her mother-in-law, but he never did. At the end of her five month visit, Deborah’s mother-in-law planned on flying back to Sri Lanka from Los Angeles. Deborah’s husband and his friend were to drive her to L.A.

On the morning of January 14th, Deborah awoke to her husband and mother-in-law hurriedly packing bags into the car. “I awoke to noises of things being moved out of the house”, Deborah says. Deborah noticed he was in a rush to leave the house. “He was very quick to leave”, Deborah says. “I asked him, ‘Did you say bye to Ibrahim?’ and he said, ‘I didn’t want to wake him’”. “I told him ‘I love you and I’ll see you soon, inshaAllah’”, Deborah says through tears. Hours later Deborah tried getting ahold of him but he would not answer the telephone. Debbie sent him a text message telling him that Zahra wasn’t feeling well and to please call her as soon as he got a chance. He replied, “Please kiss them and tell them I love them very much”. Deborah began to worry when her husband did not call back. “I thought he might have gotten in an accident”, Deborah explains. On the 16th of January, two days later, Deborah filed a Missing Person’s Report with the Gilbert Police Department. The Department of Public Safety informed her there had been no reported car accidents. DPS suggested Deborah contact the California Highway Patrol for any information but she was again told there had been no reported car accidents. The Gilbert Police Department then began an investigation to find Deborah’s husband. The friend that had traveled with him was looked up and visited by a police officer for questioning. After initially withholding information, the friend had eventually informed the police officer Deborah’s husband had not driven to L.A. but instead went to Sky Harbor Airport that afternoon. It was confirmed Deborah’s husband

had, in fact, left the country. Deborah soon received an email from her husband stating he needed “time and space” and that he had paid the rent, utilities and internet bills for the month of January. Deborah replied to his email with a plea for him to return but he has yet to reply. Deborah has also attempted calling his home in Sri Lanka and left a voice message. No one has gotten back to her.According to Deborah, the absence of his father has greatly affected Ibrahim emotionally.“My heart breaks for Ibrahim”, Deborah says. “He says, ‘If I was a good son, than daddy wouldn’t leave.’ He would pray before. He used to recite Qur’an with his dad. Now he doesn’t pray.”Medical bills ranging in the thousands have been piling up since Zahra and yara lost medical coverage. When their father quit his job prior to leaving, they could no longer receive benefits. The twins are currently receiving ACCCHS, but the insurance does not cover all medicals costs which include a monthly shot that costs $1500 each. Members in the Muslim Community have reached out and helped with whatever they could. Deborah is thankful to ICEV and sisters in the

community who have been there for her. “Alhamdulillah, it’s all in Allah’s hands.” Deborah says. “I just want him to come home. He was a great father.”Du’as are requested for Deborah and her family.

Muslim voice contacted the father Hanees Haniffa via email and received the following statement:“I am saddened that our private

life has been brought out for public discussion. I do have my side of the story but I do not intend to submit it to the public domain for scrutiny as it does not help anyone. There are many inaccuracies in Deborah’s statement. For instance, Zahra has undergone surgery only once on her stomach. She has not had three stomach surgeries. Also, Ibrahim was awake when I left on the morning of January the 14th. And, the doctors at the hospital did not ask us to contact our church or temple and prepare for a funeral. There are other inaccuracies too, but I do not see the point of pinpointing every single one of them.I have replied to Deborah’s email. She is the one that has not responded. She did not call my home in Sri Lanka or leave a voice message.I am, and always have been, willing to assume full responsibility for Ibrahim, Zahra and Yara. I have the family support necessary to raise three young children. I have communicated this to Deborah and have asked her to send the children to me for the time being so that I can take care of them and ensure that all their needs are met. She has not responded to me in any way. My offer still stands.”

After all, the picture of the world that the Fox Network paints is undoubtedly grim. If one were to believe these lies, it is a wonder they can get out of bed in the morning without being stoned to death by a horde of angryMuslims! They consistently have put together a narrative in which Muslims are an enemy, an “us versus them” mentality that is enforced with the strongest language. For most of their viewers, the Fox Network is simply an echo chamber, a friendly presence in their living room that simply repeats back to them the things that they already believe. In this regard, it is harmless. However, the level of discourse has become so hateful that it only takes a single person to believe the lies for something terrible to happen. If what the pundits on

the Fox Network say is true, then we are truly in a state of war. After all, imagine that president Obama is a

“secret Muslim” and that, instead of being a religion of peace, Muslims are all vile terrorists that are intent on spreading Shariah law by force to every corner of the world. Imagine for a moment that what the pundits are saying is true, that Muslims are after

you and your family. That Muslims are not building a community center in New york City because of they need it,

but because they want to mock the victims of the September 11th attacks, that American Muslims fully support terrorists that are intent on bombing American society. In this case, wouldn’t it be a moral imperative to go to war with every Muslim you know? While the idea

should be ridiculous to everyone, as the massacre in Norway illustrates, it only takes a single crazy individual

that truly believes the lies for terrible consequences to happen. While the killings in Norway were directly the fault of the madman that p e r p e t r a t e d that hateful act, the hateful rantings of a dishonest, corrupt media

have their share of the blame. They are playing with fire. They incite hateful, violent acts in order to gain viewers and line their pockets with cash. However, to believe their extreme lies fully will always result in extreme acts of desperation and violence.

By: Mohamud ShalabFirst of all I would like to offer my condolences to Sheikh Abdulkadir Nur Farah. A man that I was quite fond of was assassinated by Al-Shabaab militia. He was my beloved teacher in the late 80s in (Ceel-Hindi) mosque in Mogadishu. This news shocked me and it made me come to realization that the relocation of the Al-Shabaab is only going to make matters more dangerous for Puntland and its civilians. Sheikh Abdulkadir Nur Farah was a famous sheikh known in various parts of the world. May Allah bless his soul, Ameen.Al-Shabaab is a threat to Puntland and its civilians. They are now moving from Mogadishu to the rocky track mountains in the Puntland area. Recently the Puntland Commandos raided the Al-Shabaab in the base of Golis mountains. A few senior members of the terrorist group were set up in the area. There were heavy casualties and confiscated materials. This mountain range is similar to the Tora Bora mountains is a large and broad area thus making it more difficult to remove the Al-Shabaab from a place like this. This is not only the responsibility of the Puntland government and its civilians; it is the responsibility of the world at large. Puntland has been in the progress of peace since it was formed. It has encountered very few problems and is relatively stable. Since its formation, it seems the Puntland military has been ducking and dodging the Al-Shabaab. They have sworn to attack Puntland and have victimized their military and civilians. Puntland played a key role in developing the central government and laying the foundation for a new constitutional order. In Puntland State, two well-known and beneficial meetings were held, Garowe I and Garowe II. During these meetings they discussed and solved issues relating the system of government, the electoral system, and federalism. Representatives from Puntland State and The Somali Transitional government also signed an agreement, the Galkayo accord. This agreement outlined five specific ways of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Somali citizens, including ridding the coastline along Somalia of toxic waste. Puntland has played a huge role in electing the new parliament and president. Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud needs to understand and stress the importance of the Federal constitution and the sovereignty of Somalia. Individual states such

as Jubaland deserve the right to elect the president of their choice. Jubalanders especially in Kismayo have suffered the most from terrorism for a long time. They’ve been victimized by years of tribal enmity and war. Now that they have finally recovered from there past it is wrong to strip them of the right to elect their own president. How the president of Somalia approaches the formation of Jubaland State will be a litmus test. It is worth noting that Jubaland is the buffer zone for Kenya, the neighboring country. The North Eastern Province of Kenya was formerly known as the Northern Frontier District (NFD). Ethnic Somalis inhabited this area. Now the western side of Jubaland flanks the Northern Easter Province of Kenya thus making there ties more evident. We must stay in good term with jubaland and respect their wishes as they are a direct link to our relationship with Kenya.I have always been a proud supporter of the unitary democratic central government but this is not the time to instill such policy. Somalia is still a deeply divided country therefore a federal government is a temporary solution until Somali citizens setlle their differences. After years of civil unrest in war-torn Somalia, the newly elected president Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud is working to rebuild hope and stability to the nation. On January 17th 2013, President Mohamoud visited Washington DC and met with both Barack Obama and the secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The visit was a monumental step in rebuilding the country’s diplomatic relations as this was the first time since 1991, that the United States recognized Somalia’s federal government as a functioning entity. The U.S assistant secretary of state notes that the re-establishment of diplomatic ties was due to the tremendous amount of progress that Somalia has made in the past year. Somalia is expected to benefit greatly from the move, as the country will receive access too much needed resources and funds from the World Bank and other organizations. Over the past few years the United States provided nearly 360 million dollars in humanitarian aid and assistance and also supplied the African Union with more than 650 million dollars for the mission in Somalia.Somalis have developed the new federal government on their own, and they don’t always need assistance from other countries. Somalia is quickly developing into a democratic nation where the people’s concerns are addressed at a regional, national and international level. For the first time in over twenty years Somalis have hope for a bright new future for their country.

By Manar HijazReality—a world in which things are as they exist, instead of an idealistic or symbolic version of them—is s o m e t i m e s difficult to accept. Acknowledging the current nature of many mosques in America as racist, uninviting, political, and sexist may seem blasphemous but who said a realistic world is attractive?! It is an onerous reality to accept because after all, Allah’s home should be welcoming of any and every person seeking guidance. Most individuals do not need to be appraised of the current situation of our mosques because they have witnessed this reality but are unwilling to accept it. For others—the very individuals who create these types of mosques—everything is as it should be. Unfortunately, the current nature of our mosques is pushing people away and those once reoccurring mosque visitors are turning their backs, for good. Why are many Muslims turning away for the mosque? A definite answer to this question is difficult to aver; however, one can confidently say that many people are turning away from mosques that fall into one of the following categories:1. the “ethnic” MosqueThis mosque is known for its demographic. The majority of the attendance at this mosque is made up of a single ethnic background and those who do not fall under that ethnic category are treated like outsiders. People refer to this mosque by its ethnic majority. For example, they would say “the Pakistani mosque,” or “the Palestinian mosque” etc. Attendees of this mosque are usually willing to pass up several mosques closer to their home just so that they attend what they believe to be a superior mosque because the majority of its attendees are of a specific ethnic background. Their excuse for passing up the previous mosques is to avoid a certain ethnic group that they believe disrupt the mosque environment. They would say things like “I don’t attend that mosque because it is majority Arab, and you know how Arabs are.” These types of mosques are engendered by the fact that the sermon, Friday khutba, and all programs are held strictly in a single ethnic language that is not English. Unless, you speak that language you cannot attend this mosque because you wont understand what is being said.2. the overly “religious” MosqueAt this mosque women are yelled at for not wearing a hijab. They are not given a chance to explain that perhaps Islam is new to them and they are coming to the mosque to

seek knowledge. Instead, they are met with vile aspersions, which only turns them away from Islam. At this mosque, new Muslim converts are told they must change their name to a so-called Islamic name if they want to be a “real” Muslim. These mosques usually have strict gender separation guidelines, which involve having women come in from the side that is basically an alley or truck loading dock just to avoid running into a male.3. the Political dictator MosqueThis mosque runs like a dictatorship. It includes a very powerful, yet obstinate board and an even more powerful president. This group of people are unwilling to change anything about the mosque even if the change is demanded by the majority of the community. This mosque usually has dilemmas revolving around monetary projects. In many cases, the board and the president decide to allocate money for personal use while completely ignoring the well-being of the entire community. It is extremely difficult to get anything approved at this mosque because of the arrogant nature of the board. Despite large concern and rejection from the community, the board members at this mosque are some how continually “reelected” every term. 4. No youth or Women MosqueThis mosque thinks it is progressive because it happens to have one woman and one youth on its board. However, on a board of ten plus individuals, a single female and youth board member is far from impressive. Usually this mosque is run by old men who are unwilling to let go of old cultural traditions. They continue to suppress the female and youth voice and believe their contributions are naive and inexperienced. The current nature of our mosques need to be ameliorated and it starts with accepting that most mosques are not being operated in a welcoming manner. The establishment of mosques that are racist, uninviting, political, and sexist should be condemned by the entire Muslim community. We need to be solicitous about the current state of our mosques because if mosques continue to operate in this manner, we can confidently anticipate that the coming generation will no longer occupy themselves in such spaces. For the majority of mosque goers the current unwelcoming nature of our mosques has become a reality. What we do to change this reality will help make the future of the Muslim community a less precarious one.

MlFa applauds security clearance reinstatement of Muslim woman at u.s. department of defense

Mahmoud, a hearing-impaired civil servant of Palestinian descent who had her clearance pulled because she visited family overseas.Supervisors at the Department of Defense informed Mahmoud last year that her security clearance, which is required for her employment, was revoked due to her visits to family in Palestine, according to Charles Swift, Mahmoud’s attorney. Without the clearance, Mahmoud would effectively either be unemployed or demoted. On Ms. Mahmood’s behalf, MLFA retained Charles Swift of Swift & McDonald and Nancy Hollander of Freedman, Boyd, Hollander, Goldberg, Urias & Ward and funded the legal work required to defend her right to visit family overseas without fear of retaliation.“That Ms. Mahmood faced losing her job because she visited her parents in Ramallah demonstrates how far we have to go to overcome the fear and prejudice that faces Muslims in America today,” said Swift. “The success in her case demonstrates that fear and prejudice can

nevertheless be overcome through the courage and commitment of Muslim Americans like Linda, and with the steadfast assistance of organizations like MLFA.”

“I wish to thank Muslim Legal Fund of America for their support, and for Mr. Charlie Swift as my lawyer,” Mahmoud said after learning about the decision.

“Receiving a winning verdict was an indescribable joy and relief.”Khalil Meek, Executive Director for MLFA, said that his organization is pleased with the Department’s decision and believes that a person’s ethnic origin should never be criminalized.“Americans from any race, religion, or ethnic origin should feel free to serve America without fear of discrimination or unfair treatment,” said Meek. “This decision is a positive step for workplace equality and is a testament to how the system can work when we assert our rights.”The Muslim Legal Fund of America (MFLA) is a national civil liberties legal fund that defends the U.S. Bill of Rights by supporting legal cases involving civil liberty encroachments. Established in 2001, MLFA has defended freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to a fair trial, due process of law and many of our nation’s civil liberties. the Issue• The National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 (NDAA) was signed into law by President Obama on December 31, 2011. The law authorizes the U.S. military to carry out domestic anti-terrorism operations and indefinitely detain Americans and others suspected of terrorism without charge or trial.• Section 1021 of the NDAA vaguely endorses the claimed presidential authority to indefinitely detain Americans as enemy combatants under “existing law,” i.e. the Authorization to Use Military Force Act.• Section 1021 of the NDAA explicitly allows for the indefinite detention of Americans captured abroad, as well as foreigners.• Section 1022 of the NDAA authorizes the indefinite military detention of Americans. While this section does not require the military to detain U.S. citizens, the authority or option to do so remains.*• The power to indefinitely detain individuals under the NDAA remains “until the end of hostilities” -- an indefinite and undetermined length of time. • The NDAA is unconstitutional as it disregards the Fifth Amendment guarantee of due process for “all persons” and the Sixth Amendment right to a fair and speedy trial. What is being asked of members of Congress?• Support and cosponsor legislation that repeals Sections 1021 and 1022 of the NDAA and reaffirms the due process rights of all persons, including American citizens at home and abroad, documented and undocumented residents, and persons in U.S. custody.• Amend legislation that has already been introduced to reaffirm the due process rights of all persons. There is no freedom, justice or equality in maintaining the rights of the majority over the rights of the few.reasons to support• There is strong bipartisan support for legislation that addresses the NDAA’s detention provisions. Several acts have already been introduced by Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate.

• The U.S. Constitution already provides all the necessary tools to safeguard the nation from enemies both foreign and domestic. Those who would attempt to do our nation harm should be arrested without hesitation, charged, tried, and, if convicted, punished to the full extent of the law. Those who are falsely accused of supporting such hostilities rely on the Constitution to protect them.• Congress is supposed to check the president’s power, not expand it. Many leaders in congress and the civil rights community believe that granting such detention powers is an overreach of executive authority.• The NDAA leaves too much to presidential interpretation. President Obama’s signing statement already suggests that he believes his administration has the authority to indefinitely detain Americans -- only that he chooses to not use it. Furthermore, no guarantee exists that future administrations will not interpret the law to do so.• It is unconstitutional for the military to arrest and indefinitely detain all persons inside the U.S. To deny any person the right to due process in the name of national security makes our nation less free, but not more secure.• Only 1 in 4 likely voters actually approved of the NDAA according to an IBOPE Zogby Interactive survey conducted in January 2012.CAIR analysis of section 1022 of the national defense authorization act of 2012National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 Public Law No: 112-81TITLE X--GENERAL PROVISIONS Subtitle D--Counterterrorism Sec. 1022. Military custody for foreign al-Qaeda terrorists. Subparagraph (b)(1)Section 1022 of the NDAA authorizes the indefinite military detention of Americans. While under this section the requirement to detain a person in military custody does not apply to U.S. citizens, CAIR legal counsel believes that the authority or option to do so remains.

A CAIR Initiative to Promote an Accurate Image of Islam in the MediaAccording to a report by Media Tenor, a research firm that monitors and analyzes media coverage, “Islam is not only the religion that is the most frequently mentioned in television news in the United States, but also a significant share of the coverage is negative.” The report goes on to

state that the tone of the media coverage of Islam was negative 40 percent of the time, while statements about Christianity were negative 20 percent of the time. Media Tenor also found that “two-thirds of the television coverage about Islam associates Muslims with extremism.”In response to this report and to the general increase in Islamophobia, CAIR designed an initiative to help enhance understanding of Islam and Muslims in the news media. CAIR distributed more than 35,000 copies of its original publication, American Muslims: A Journalist’s Guide

to Understanding Islam and Muslims. The guides were sent to media professionals, journalism departments of universities, and libraries nationwide. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, including comments such as:• “It is high quality in terms of production value and offers some useful facts on Islam.”

• “Very clearly written – A great aid for journalists.”• “It’s simple, brief explanations make it a good resource for journalists.”• “The guide shows Muslims and Islam in a positive light, for a change.” Since many recent news stories about Islam and Muslims originate on Capitol Hill, we also distributed the guide to the press secretary or communications director for each member of the 112th United States Congress: 100 senators and the 440 members of the House of Representatives.

threat from space is real, But Man stands Better chance than the dinosaurs

New America Media, Commentary, Andrew Lam

A meteor estimated to be 10 tons by NASA exploded Friday morning over Russia’s Ural region and its shockwave caused injuries to over 1,200 people. It took out windows and walls in the city of Chelyabinsk. And it temporarily shifted the conversation here on earth to talks of the heavens.

“We can find these objects, we can track their motions, and we can predict their orbits many years into the future,” noted Robert Naeye of Sky and Telescope in an essay called, Lessons from the Russian Meteor Blast. “And in the unlikely event that we actually find a dangerous object on a collision course with Earth, we might actually be able to deflect it if given sufficient warning time. Now, every government in the world is keenly aware of the possibility of meteor explosions over its territory.”

The Russian parliament is also keen on the idea. “Instead of fighting on Earth, people should be creating a joint system of asteroid defense,” its affairs committee chief Alexei Pushkov wrote on his Twitter account late Friday. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin on Saturday proposeda global defense system to counter space threats.

And on CNN, Lawrence Krauss, professor of physics and director of the origin project, talkedabout how human technology has advanced to the point of predicting and, more interesting, deflecting oncoming meteorites that could cause the earth “significant damage.”

“We have to think about it seriously,” he said. “It’s not science fiction. We can send a rocket out and land on [a meteor] or impact with it.” If the meteor is far enough, “a small rocket running for a while [can cause] a small angular change... enough to have it miss the earth.”

So welcome to the age of “empyrealization” -- an age of man’s increasing awareness and interactions with the heavens. We grow cognizant that we exist on intimate levels with the rest of the universe, that we are interacting with it, and, increasingly,

having an effect upon it as it does on us. The word – empyrealization -- doesn’t exist yet in the dictionary, but for that matter neither did globalization, three decades ago.

Unlike the dinosaurs, we have, in effect, become active agents in changing our destiny. A giant meteor wiped out much of life on earth 65 million years ago because the dinosaurs didn’t collectively create a missile shield to deflect the meteor. Humans, on the other hand, with our orbiting telescopes and space probes, and our growing awareness of the threat from space, can track large foreign objects coming from millions of miles away, and are talking about collectively deflecting those that could do us harm.

That man has changed his home planet is now well accepted. Long before the industrial revolution and the age of climate change, humans have significantly impacted earth, at least according to climate scientist William Ruddiman, in his book titled “Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum: How Humans Took Control of Climate.” There is significant evidence, he noted, that levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have been rising since the earliest beginnings of agriculture. There is strong evidence, too, that a mini-ice age was averted some 5,000 years ago due to the rise in methane caused by the proliferation rice paddy agriculture in Asia.

Unlike our ancestors, however, increasingly we are aware that human actions have an impact on the entire planet and beyond.

The knowledge informed NASA’s decision in September 2003 to crash the spacecraft Galileo on Jupiter rather than on Europa, one of Jupiter’s 39 satellites. Europa has an ocean under its ice and active volcanoes to boot. It just might be supporting alien life. Jupiter, on the other hand, is very hot and gaseous and deemed incapable of life. Crashing Galileo on Europa would have risked contaminating it with microbes from earth.

In fact, we have been interacting with the heavens longer than most have thought. Think of it in term of radio waves. According to Adam Grossman:

“Mankind has been broadcasting radio waves into deep space for about a hundred years now... That, of course, means there is an ever-expanding bubble announcing Humanity’s presence to anyone listening in the Milky Way. This bubble is astronomically large (literally), and currently spans approximately 200 light years across.”

Or think of it in terms of our orbiting trash. According to NASA, “More than 500,000 pieces of debris, or ‘space junk,’ are tracked as they orbit the Earth. They all travel at speeds up to 17,500 mph, fast enough for a relatively small piece of orbital debris to damage a satellite or a spacecraft.”

While some of the junk falls back to earth, other bits exit into outer space. In other words, the cosmos might rain meteors on earth, but humans too have already interacted with the universe by sending manmade debris into space.

But more significantly, our rovers have been on Mars, roaming and digging, and studying its soil. China is planning a potential colony on the moon. And we have plenty of space probes that travel about in our solar system. Voyager 1, the first probe ever sent out, has gone past our solar system into deep space.

And all the while we map the universe, searching for planets

that may be hospitable to life. Astronomers, in fact, have discovered hundreds of other solar systems, and 864 exo-planets so far -- planets that are outside our solar system. One planet in particular, 150 million light years away, is believed to have an atmosphere.

Clearly, our destiny is in outer space. Globalization is but child’s play compared to empyrealization, when man now recognizes earth as existing in an open system with the rest of the cosmos and that he is interacting with, and increasingly, having an effect upon it.

But meanwhile there’s the issue of falling meteorites. The one that exploded over Russia last Friday was undetected. There are several million asteroids that orbit the sun and less than 1 percent so far is tracked. If man’s destiny is in space, man’s home world needs to be protected for that destiny to be fulfilled.

The dinosaurs didn’t’ fare too well. We have a better chance. We’ve come by and large to accept that we changed the weather. Whether or not we can deflect a large meteor as in the Hollywood movie, Armageddon, remains to be seen. Brilliant minds are at work. And there’s nothing like an external threat to galvanize humanity.

By Fathiyyah BashsharThe emptiness of this world’s life is contrasted with the evidence of Allah’s w o n d e r f u l handiwork in all Creation. It is He who holds the keys of the Unseen and secrets of all that we see. Quran (6:32-60) Man’s beliefs are the foundations and prime motivators for actions, for what is held to be true on the inside must manifest it outwardly. As Muslims we have abandoned our worship of Allah for the meaningless efforts to obtain satisfaction in this world. What nerve do you have to sleep through your salat but get up on time for work every day? What nerve do you have to miss the salat during the day non-chalantly with the idea the “well I`ll just make it up”? What nerve do you have to deny a person their rights that Allah Has bestowed on each and every Muslim? What nerve do you have to not obey your husband? What nerve do you have to not honor your mother? What nerve do you have to slander and backbite your/brother or sister? What nerve do we have to chase the enjoyment this world and not make reservations to meet our Lord? Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (May Allah be pleased with him) said, “I have never regretted anything as much as my regret over a day on which the sun sets and my life span decreases while my good deeds have not increased.” My dear brothers and sisters do not allow yourself to hold the characteristics of arrogance. There is no friendship between Allah and any individual out of His creation so as to give him licence for an undesirable thing which He has held unlawful for all the worlds.” (That is pride and arrogance).Arrogance is the practical expression of pride which develops in a person who thinks him/her to be better than others. Arrogance can be categorized as: (1) Arrogance against Allah.(2) Arrogance against the Holy Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) and the Imams (Peace be upon them)(3) Arrogance towards people.Arrogance towards the Almighty is expressed in different ways. There are arrogant people seized by the feeling of being all powerful. They attribute all their

achievements and acquisitions to their own capabilities and are oblivious of the supremacy and might of the Almighty. The feeling of self-importance is expressed by them in their actions and speech with words like “I have done this,” and “I will do that”.On the basis of his strength and property he refuses to recognise the supremacy and might of Allah with the result that the darkness of disbelief shrouds his heart. The Holy Qur’an says: “...there is naught in their breasts but (a desire) to become great which they shall never attain to...” (Surah Ghafīr 40:56) It has been reported that “The best of your servants are those who are not arrogant, and who do not repeat sins insolently, and make repentance their habit and I avoid to be the one who becomes arrogant and does not call you.” Arrogance causes degradation in this world as well as the Hereafter. Arrogance towards the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) and Imams (Peace be upon them) is actually arrogance towards the Almighty Allah. Disobeying the commands of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) and the Imams (Peace be upon them) the representatives of Allah is an act of arrogance towards the Almighty Himself.Muhammad Ibn Muslim says, “I said. Certainly we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.” The arrogance which prevents one to enter Paradise is arrogance based on the rejection of truth and on the rejection of Allah, the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) and the Holy Imams (Peace be upon them.) Allah is the Creator of all human beings; therefore it is not proper for one man to behave arrogantly with another and to consider himself superior and exclusive. The one who behaves proudly has actually become Allah’s rival, because Pride is a quality reserved for Allah alone.According to Abdullah Ibn Masīd the greatest sin is when one is told to ‘Fear Allah’ and he replies, “Mind your own business.” When someone warns a person of Divine retribution and advises him to forgo some sins and instead of accepting his advice with humility he says, ‘It is none of your business. First reform yourself!’, or instead of giving up a sin the person repeats it with insolence. Do not go the pace, and do not be stationary or slow. Do not be talkative and do

not be silent. Do not be loud and do not be timid or half-hearted. Do not be too confident, and do not be cowed down. If you have patience, it is to give you constancy and determination that you may bravely carry on the struggle of life. If you have humility, it is to save you from unseemly swagger, not to curb your right spirit and your reasoned determination. He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs.” (Qur’an, 73:9)Relieve yourself of worry after

you have planned; do not concern yourself with what Allah has undertaken on your behalf.” May Allah protect us from such sins, and may He remove all pride from within us. We ask Allaah to rid us all of arrogance and make us humble. All that is good and correct is by the Grace of Allah and all that is wrong & incorrect is from myself and Satan, may Allah forgive me.Any reader who comes across any error in this article is earnestly requested to bring it to my notice, Jazakallah Khair.

prophet Muhammad greatest person in the history of man-kind, says hindu scholar

Islam is a wonderful religion and Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace be upon him), is the greatest person in the history of mankind, according to a renowned Hindu scholar in India. He also said that for learning and understanding Islam, Prophet’s life and teachings are the best source. The Hindu scholar, Swami Lakshmi Shankaracharya, said, “We are talking about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and we should keep it in our mind that he is the greatest individual in history. If anyone wants to know about Islam, one should judge Islam by Prophet’s (peace be upon him) life and his teachings.”While delivering a lecture on “Seerat-un-Nabi” (Prophet’s life) at a conference held in Patna, the capital city Bihar province, recently, Swami who is also the founder of Jan Ekta Manch, said that peace and humanity is the core teaching of Islam. But, unfortunately, most of the Muslims don’t follow Islamic teachings and they hardly learn from the life of Prophet

Muhammad (peace be upon him).Exhorting Muslims, he urged, “It is the duty of every Muslim to

save and protect the humanity, and that the Prophet would forgive his enemies and showed patience when he was harmed by others, this was his moral teachings which made Islam an international religion.” He cited the stories of “Fatah-Al-Makkah” (Conquest of Makkah) when enemies of Islam were given the amnesty despite being made prisoners of war by the Muslims.

On Jihad, he clarified that it has nothing to do with innocent killings or terrorism.

The first permission to take to arms was accorded in verse 22:39 of the Holy Qur’an, which reads: “Permission (to take up arms) is hereby given to those who attacked, because they have been wronged.” The Holy Qur’an further says: “Fight, for the sake of Allah with those that fight against you, but do not be aggressive.”He also cited extensively from the

Hindu scriptures to validate Islam’s endeavor to establish peace on earth. It is interesting to note that the Hindu seer was initially very critical about Islam and its concept of Jihad. He considered Islam to be the root cause of global terrorism. This thinking had cropped up in his mind because of his study of negative materials on Islam and behavior

of some Muslims. Later he wrote a book, “The History of Islamic Terrorism,” too. However, on being urged to study Islam from its original sources, the Swami read the Holy Qur’an from cover to cover besides the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He realized that he had misunderstood Islam. While accepting his mistake he wrote sort of a rejoinder to such negative materials in a book titled, “Islam – Aatank ya Aadarsh” (in Hindi) and its English version, “Islam: Terror or Ideal Path.”In this book, he clarified the real meaning of Jihad and why Islam is the religion of peace. He concluded that Muslims were enjoined to fight in self-defense to establish peace, without resorting to terror. The conference was organized by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Bihar. Nayyaruzzaman, the regional president of the Jamaat, presided over the conference. He emphasized on the acquisition of true knowledge of Islam and practicing it as was done by the Prophet’s companions.
