RRMS Counseling Department News!

School counselors Amy Covell (Director of Counseling), Erin Fitzpatrick (eighth), Erica Jefferson (seventh), Erika Wanzer (sixth) along with registrar Kristine Bucci hope that all students had a successful and enjoyable first semester. The third interim ends on Friday, March 3 and interim reports will be sent home March 15. Our department encourages you to monitor your student's progress regularly throughout the school year using School Fusion and Parent Portal. At this point in the school year, the primary focus of the counseling department is on the delivery of the school counseling curriculum and academic planning. All four counselors work very closely with grade level teachers to create a plan of lessons that provide the most impact and least disruption to the students. Counselors enter the classroom at least once each grading period to deliver lessons that have been planned to address the needs of the students and are based on the Prince William County Counseling Curriculum, American School Counselor Association standards, and mission/vision of Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School. In addition, each counselor meets with students who have demonstrated academic/attendance deficits at interim and grade reporting time. Counselors assist students with goal-setting and learning strategies to improve academic performance. This February, Mrs. Jefferson and Ms. Wanzer have conducted Academic Groups for our sixth and seventh graders. Middle school is a hard transition for most students both socially and academically and finding the time to study and learn good study habits takes work! These groups will emphasize study skills, organization and time management. This group will help students to determine new ways to study for that next big test. Homework, friends, sports, clubs, family – where does the time go? This group will also help students to use time wisely and help with organization. Also during the month of March, Ms. Wanzer will be visiting sixth grade classes to conduct a lesson on Internet Safety and Mrs. Jefferson will conduct a sexual harassment lesson with the seventh grade. Mrs. Fitzpatrick will be visiting the eighth grade elective classrooms in March/April to conduct a lessons on study skills. Excellent study skills will help students adjust more successfully to the academic demands that high school will present as well as help them to successfully prepare for the upcoming SOL tests. Also, be sure to review the high school scheduling timeline listed for you below. All counselors meet with students daily to assist in personal, social, and academic related issues. Please feel free to contact your child’s counselor any time you have a concern now and throughout the school year. We are available to assist students and parents to the best of our abilities and we look forward to developing close relationships with your family! We look forward to a successful school year! Mustang Ambassadors Volunteering Their Time! Our Mustang Ambassadors have been very busy this school year. Students have volunteered their time to create “Kindness Cards” that were taped to each student locker in December and again in February. They also create signs and posters to encourage students who participate on sports teams and clubs. The Ambassadors had a successful Mustang Giving Tree this year. They look forward to planning sixth grade student transition activities and Teacher Appreciation activities. We have approximately 300 student ambassadors this year across all three grade levels under the direction of Ms. Covell. Thank you to the all of our student ambassadors!

Battle of the Books Open Tournament

On Saturday, January 21, 25 Reagan students competed in the Battle of the Books Open Tournament at

Marshall Middle School in The Plains, VA. Students have been working hard all year in preparation for this

event by becoming experts on 20 different books of all genres and topics. Through bi-weekly before school

meetings and lots of individual reading time, our students divided into 6 teams and entered the competition

battle ready.

A total of 50 teams competed in this regional event and Reagan performed extremely well on all fronts. The

United Mustaches of America, consisting of seventh graders, Lexington Crossett, Omaid Ghafoor i,

Raj Joshi, and Daniel Lee, and sixth grader, Aryan Joshi, did fantastically well and finished 2nd place overall

and only 5 points behind the first place Louisa team! The 4-Eyed Geniuses, (Steffanie Abbey, Merom

Arthur, Brooke Hewitt, and Maddie Hulbert); Super Mustangs (Saahas Gowda, John Murray, Agrim

Sharma, Chirac Troy, and Cade Whitaker); Battling Bookworms (Joanne Seo, Gwen Switkes, Jenevive

Tejada, and Rochelle Thomas); Book Busters (Janya Choudhary, Avery Exner, Akshita Ramesh, and

Francesca Zola); and the Book-A-Roos (Jessica Minelli, Br idget Sadler , and Anastasia Zola) finished

20th, 30th, 31st, 36th, and 45th, respectively. Each team represented Reagan Middle School with integrity,

knowledge, and, above all, superb sportsmanship.

In addition to these successes, one Reagan battler scored in the top 10 on the multiple choice section of the

competition: Seventh grader, Lexington Crossett. A week before the tournament, all participating students

took individual multiple choice exams covering information from all 20 books. These scores were then

compiled as a team score, giving each team a beginning point total at the start of the tournament. The top 10

scorers within the entire tournament were called up on stage during the Open to compete in a jeopardy style,

fast-paced event. Lexington preformed beautifully under pressure in front of the enormous crowd. Reagan

at its best!

Up next for the Battle of the Books Club is the Final Tournament on Saturday, April 22 at Warrenton Middle

School. Team United Mustaches of America, along with two alternates, Brooke Hewitt and Saahas Gowda,

will complete against other top teams in the region. All battlers are invited and encouraged to attend the

tournament to help cheer on the Mustaches! Congratulations to all Reagan battlers!

“Get Your Act Together!” Reagan’s First Ever Student-Led Assembly a Huge Success!

On Monday, February 13, 2017, Reagan Middle School hosted it’s first ever student-led assembly. This assembly was the first of it’s kind to showcase student talent and inspirational/motivational messages. The assembly kicked off National Random Acts of Kindness Week and it’s purpose was to promote kindness, respect, enthusiasm, compassion, and other examples of good character. The assembly has produced and hosted by our very own seventh grade science teacher, Mr. John McCoy. Mr. McCoy and his co-performer, Eli, began the assembly with a music video for the son “Yesterday’s Gone” that they created as part of their group “Fickle Minds”.

Eighth graders Nancy Stephenson, Savannah Demare, Shannon Leonard, and seventh grader Chelsea Hodum composed artistic videos in which they exhibited not only their artistic talent, but a positive message. Brendan Boxall (seventh grade) and Matthew Bender’s (eighth grade) gymnastic abilities were highlighted via video footage of their performances in an effort to deliver the “hard work and dedication” message. Anika Tsutsumi (seventh grade) played an amazing cello performance to compliment the instrumental versions of Cold Play’s “Viva La Vida” and The Script’s “Hall of Fame” Domonique Pierno (seventh grade) and Naomi Heilen (sixth grade) delivered stunning vocal performances. Domonique sang “I Will Rise” by Katy Perry and Naomi sang “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara and brought the student crowd to it’s feet.

Seventh graders Martin Michael, Gavin Cespedes, Joella Malmquist, Delaney Ayers, Tyler Blythe, and Caige Wine teamed up to produce and video that depicts bullying and delivered the message “You are Not Alone”. Seventh grader Freddy Arce bravely shared his personal story of bullying and grief to inspire others to rise above any circumstance they may encounter. He concluded by playing on the piano. Eighth grader, Kenny Pham, also shared his personal story of bullying and how it motivated him to become strong and help others. The assembly also incorporated games to involve the crowd. Eighth graders Peyton Rahn and Kenny Pham

were instrumental in getting the crowd involved at all times and encouraging enthusiasm. It concluded with a

live performance of “Cul-de-Sac” performed by Fickle Minds. Eighth graders Jensen Perkins and Luke

Schlevensky were an integral part of the back ground sound, light and stage effects. The assembly elicited

positive responses from the Reagan students and staff. Mr. McCoy is looking forward to implementing more

of his positive messages delivered through student-centered modalities in the future at Reagan.

Keep Your Child Motivated to Learn and Do Well In and Out of School – From America’s Career Resource Network

It is important to encourage your child to do his or her best in school and in any outside activities in which her or she may participate. As a parent you can do this by:

Showing love. Provide support and encourage your child to develop his or her interests. Let your child know that you support and love them is vital to maintaining a close parent-child relationship.

Teaching responsibility. Encourage your child to be responsible for chores, completing homework assignments, taking on community activities, and acknowledging good and bad decisions that he or she has made. • Being a role model. Sometimes a parent's actions can speak louder than words. Show that you value education and exhibit the values and behavior you hope your child will develop. • Providing your child with a range of experiences. A range of experiences in sports, music, volunteer activities, travel, etc., will allow your child to discover and develop his or her strengths. • Setting limits. Discuss with your child what TV shows, movies and video games are appropriate for him or her to watch or play. Be aware of the activities and friendships that your child has. It is also important for you to know what music your child listens to and which magazines he or she reads. • Talking to your child. Be aware of what your child is doing. Talk to your child about his or her day, activities, school work, friends and interests. Listen to your child and discuss the subjects that are important to him or her, even if those subjects do not seem important to you. • Being aware of potential issues. Know and understand the potential problems or pressures that face your child such as drug use, depression, eating disorders and poor school performance so that they can be addressed as soon as possible. • Monitor your child's progress. Be aware of your child's progress on school work, tests and assessments, and grades so you can address any potential problems or issues before they become larger.

• Remember your child's next transition — to high school. Make sure that your child is aware of the classes and programs he or she will need to take in middle school to be prepared for high school and beyond. Help your child acquire the skills and knowledge needed in various subjects such as English, science, history, mathematics, foreign languages and computer classes. No matter what classes, programs or interests your child may want to pursue in middle school, help him or her also consider the options available during high school and post-high school education and use the time in middle school to prepare for those future educational opportunities.

Parents as Educational Partners

Attached are three pictures of our Parents as Educational Partners (PEP) adult learners. One picture was taken on our first night of class in November and the other on our graduation night ceremony on February 15. With Sally Atkins (the lead ESOL teacher at Battlefield High School) and myself as co-teachers, we taught adult English classes on Wednesday and Thursday nights at BHS from 5 to 8 p.m. from November 3 to February 15. The adult learners who enrolled included BHS parents, from China, Peru, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Afghanistan and Pakistan and RRMS parents from Egypt, Afghanistan and El Salvador; two of the adult learners in our class this year are also PWC employees---one at Reagan and the other at Gravely. We reviewed not just the characteristics of the American school system, but also explicitly taught grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing through units on the community, health, real estate and technology. Each parent received his/her own username and password to use the Rosetta Stone software at school and home, thanks to the county's Office of EL Programs and Instructional Services.

Several BHS students participated as teaching assistants and interpreters: Tania Hernandez Pineda, Palwasha Khan, Luis Rodriguez Jimenez, Nazim Miah, Youstina Nazir and Josue Martinez Rivera. On December 8, our literacy night, with the help of Beth S. Walker, the librarian and Adult Education Coordinator of the Haymarket Gainesville Community Library, our parents and even some of their kids, applied for library cards and received an official tour before completing a scavenger hunt and checking out books and movies. Our BHS student volunteers did an excellent job as interpreters for our Spanish and Urdu speaking parents (see the third picture).

While our class was small, we were extremely pleased and privileged to have parents and their little ones in class every week! Many parents will continue their studies at the Beacon for Adult Literacy organization until we resume our class in the fall. We hope that more parents will join us in the fall as we highlight not just the importance of education, but of community and diversity as well!

Best,

Suzette Larson and Sally Atkins PEP Instructors

2017-18 School Calendar Set - Pre-Labor Day start, slightly shorter breaks, June 8 last day.

Informed by public preference for more class time before major tests and an earlier end to the school year, the newly adopted 2017-18 PWCS calendar will begin classes before Labor Day, but finish on June 8. The selection follows the work of the Calendar Committee, which had proposed two options (Pre -Labor Day and a Post-Labor Day) recommending the Pre-Labor Day version. Residents then had the chance to review, express their preferences, and comment on the options through an online survey. Results showed residents wanted the benefits that come from an early opening, but still preferred to start classes after the holiday—priorities that were irreconcilable. As a compromise, the School Board adopted a hybrid of the previously considered calendars, delivering the required number of school days, while reflecting most, but not all, community preferences.

Classes begin before Labor Day;

Winter and spring breaks are shortened by one day each (compared with the initial pre -Labor Day option) to allow the earlier end to the school year;

Calendar includes 12 days worth of instructional hours beyond state requirements (based on the length of the PWCS school day) to absorb the need for weather-related closings or delays without changes**;

Students get maximum instructional time prior to SOLs and other standardized testing;

Classes end June 8. **The calendar also includes three designated make-up days that would be used in the unlikely event that built-in allowances for weather issues prove inadequate.

Performing Arts updates Seventh Grade performed on Thursday, March 2 and Eighth Grade performed on Saturday, March 4. The Eighth Grade Music trip to Disney is quickly approaching. The final payment was due March 1. The final payment amount will be adjusted based on any fundraising efforts students have made towards this trip.

* Early Dismissal Reminders *

Awesome Parents, We truly understand if an emergency arises and you must pick

your child up at dismissal. We will make every effort to see to it

that they are waiting in the office for you when there are

emergency situations. However, the student must be signed out

by a parent or an adult on the emergency card. Please know it’s

not our wishes to make this a difficult transition. However, it’s

really important to present proper ID when arriving for dismis-

sal. Per our county guidelines and for safety reasons, we must verify your identify always

before releasing a student. Parents, we also request that you arrive no later than 2:40 for

early dismissal. Once actual dismissal starts, it’s very difficult to release individual students

because your student may have exited the building already or is on a bus. Please make sure

you know which bus your child rides. This helps if we have to pull them. Thank you ad-

vance for arriving before 2:40 p.m. Our office staff truly appreciates it.

Contacting Teachers, Counselors and Administrators

Parents, please be sure to notify your child’s teachers or

counselors for any academic or behavior concerns. Please be sure

to check out Private Class Pages for homework and classwork

and the Public pages for additional information. If you need

additional assistance, please do not hesitate to email your child’s

teacher or grade level counselor. We are all here to educate and

support your child.

Important Information for Parents and Students Animals in the school setting and school grounds

Parents, please know that we love animals and would welcome them in the school for instructional

purposes per county regulations. Unfortunately, animals, specifically dogs are not allowed in school or

on school grounds. There are signs posted near our fields. We recognize that all animals we’ve seen

are secured to a leash. However, we ask that you adhere to the PWC policy and leave your pets at

home. Please also understand that you may be asked to leave the campus with your animal.

Question/Answer– Good To Know

Q: How do we get important messages or items you may drop off for your child to them in a timely

manner?

A: If it’s an emergency item, we’ll get it to them right away. However, if it’s something they can pick

up during lunch, their names are posted on the message board and they know to report to the message

table to pick the items up. This usually works very well. If a major change will occur for your child for

the day, such as a different route home, please share this and we will have a counselor or administrator

to get the message to them asap. When bringing shoes, please put them in a plastic bag with student’s

name on it.

Q: Can I speak with a teacher during the day if I have questions about my child?

A: During the instructional day, teachers are not able to speak to parents on the phone. However, they

are required to follow-up within 24 - 48 hours. They may also attempt to call during their planning

times.

Q: Am I allowed to have lunch with my child?

A: Absolutely! However, middle school students usually aren't too cool about it. Just let the office

know and you’ll need to sign-in.

Q: Can I watch my child practice sports?

A: Our coaches welcome it. However, please no side-line coaching :-). When visiting inside of the

building, please arrive before the main office closes at 4 p.m. and make sure the coach is aware of your

visit. You must be officially signed in when coming into the building.
