The primary use of mustard seed is for extracting oil while the seeds are also
used as condiment in pickles, meat and salad dressings.
Mustard seed can also be milled into mustard flour and used as an ingredient in
processed foods, such as salad dressings and soups.
The seeds when crushed yield around 27-33% of oil.
Rapeseed oil has been used for centuries as a crop for a variety of uses. It was
initially burned as oil in lamps by our ancestors in Asia and Europe, and later
was discovered as cooking oil which people used to cook a number of items.
The oilcake is mostly used as cattle feed.

The crop is grown both in subtropical and tropical countries. In Asia, it is chieflygrown in China, India and Pakistan.
It is also grown in Europe, Canada and erstwhile USSR, but the forms of rapeseed and
mustard grown there are different from those grown in India.
Climatic Requirements The mustard crop grows well in areas having 25 to 40 cm of rainfall.
Sarson and toria are preferred in low-rainfall areas, whereas rai and toria are grown in
medium and high-rainfall areas, respectively.
The mustard thrives best in light to heavy loams. Rai may be grown on all types of soil,
but toria does best in loam to heavy loam.
Sarson is suited to light-loam soil and taramira is mostly grown on very light soils.

In India, mustard seed is basically a Rabi crop. Its sowing start in the month of October
and continues till end of December.
Mustard seed is mainly grown in North West parts of India. Rajasthan and Uttar
Pradesh are the major Mustard Seed producing States in the country.
The production from Rajasthan is highly monsoon dependent. The other significantproducers are Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, West Bengal and Assam.
Rajasthan is the largest of producer of mustard seed in the country with a contribution
of54%to the countrys total mustard seed production followed by Punjab and Haryana
together contributes 14%.
Other major producers of mustard seed in India are Madhya Pradesh/Chhattisgarh
(13%) and Gujarat (7%).

Despite moderate decline in area under mustard seed cultivation, there was a drastic
fall in the production from 2004-05 to 2007-08 mainly because of dramatic fall in the
yield level from 1059 kg/ha in 2003-04 to 848 kg/ha in 2007-08 due to unfavorable
weather condition during critical growth stages of the crop.
Severe winter in January month of those years led to pod shrinkage resulting to lower
production level.
In 2008-09 output increased dramatically following increased acreage and
favourable weather condition. For 2009-10, the mustard seed production has been
estimated at 59.20 lakh tonnes, down 4.5% from 62 lakh tonnes produced last year.
The area brought under mustard seed cultivation in Rabi 2009-10 was 64.36 lakh
hectares against 66.47 lakh hectares previous year.

Indias oil meals exports to Japan in FY11jumped more than two-fold to 1.259million tonnes as the latter prefers non-genetically modified (GM) crop produced by
India
India had shipped 475,000 tonnes of oil meal (used as cattle and poultry feed) in
FY10 fiscal, according to the Mumbai-based Solvent Extractors Association (SEA).
India is basically a non-GM crop producer when it comes to oilseeds, while other
major producing nations like Argentina, the US and Brazil largely produce GM crops.
Demand for Indian oil meals (soybean and rapeseed) in European Union also
increased five-fold to 299,770 tonnes in FY11 compared to 58,489 tonne in the

In the countries of the northern hemisphere with cool and humid climates
oilseed rape is a very important oil- and protein-crop.
No other crop under these climatic conditions produces such high yields of both oil and
protein.
Thus Canada (20% of the world production) and the European countries, Germany,
France, and the UK are among the main producers of oilseed rape.
Canada in particular is the main exporting country on to the world market. Compared
with 20 years ago, there has been an impressive increase in rate of annual production
by over 200% in nearly all important oilseed rape producing countries. This rise inproduction is not only the consequence of an increasing area of crop cultivation but
also of higher yields per unit area.

The average yield of oilseed rape depends on climate, soil fertility, intensity ofproduction, fertilizer input, species and variety of rape crop.
The high yields found in European countries (for example 3.5 t/ha in Germany) are
generally based on high production standards together with favorable climatic
conditions allowing the use ofhigh-yielding winter types of oilseed rape together
with a high fertilizer input.
In India we are lacking in these areas
