Muswellbrook South Public School Newsletter 57 Maitland Street, Muswellbrook NSW 2333 EMAIL: [email protected] Telephone: (02) 65431896 Fax: (02) 65433475 TERM 3 WEEK 4 Wednesday 14 August 2019 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE At South we believe that we need to look after our mental health in the same way we look after our physical health. We all know that it’s important to wear sunscreen and a hat in the sun to protect our skin. We also know that it’s important to brush our teeth to protect them from decay. In the same way we need to protect our minds. This week our students have been learning about the brain, enabling them to develop their own mental health kit. We’ve introduced four key parts of the brain to students that can help them manage their own emotions and help them learn. The ‘guard dog’ is our amygdala (a-mig-dala), which helps protects us when faced with danger. It allows us to react quickly. But sometimes it can overact, putting us in a stressed state when no real danger is present. The result can be anxiety or stress, which we need to manage through long, slow and deep breathing. This refocussing on our breath allows our prefrontal cortex, the ‘wise owl’ to get back in control and helps us make good decisions. The other two parts of the brain students are learning about this week are the hippocampus, the ‘elephant’, which helps us remember and the reticular activating system, ‘sifting sooty’, which sifts information coming into the brain. Have a chat to your children about these parts of the brain and see how much they’re able to share with you. Over the following weeks I’m sure you’ll be surprised at your children’s knowledge of the brain and how they can keep mentally fit. Glen Kite Principal Attendance Hero Each week, we like to acknowledge those students who come to school each day, ready to learn, by awarding students as ‘Attendance Heroes’. These lucky students receive a lunch order to the value of $5 to be used during the week. To be an Attendance Hero and get your name in the draw, you must be ere very day eady n-time!
