• It is the law governing all traffic control devices.

IOP ETC Symbol Design Principles - 1
• Develop 5 or 6 candidate symbols
• Symbol has to tell the story—”your transponder works on this roadway”
• Can not duplicate existing toll road symbols
• Can not duplicate international toll road symbols
• Potentially serves international audiences (U.S., Canada and Mexico)
• Compliance with MUTCD design principles - No more than 1 to 2 colors - No use of red
C&M Subcommittee
26
IOP ETC Symbol Design Principles - 2
• Can be an overlay if required
– Will not replace existing logos
– Can be paired with existing brands
• Symbol to be easily identifiable at highway speeds
– Clean
– Simple
– Bold
• Expected Results:
– Stand alone symbol and symbol with text
– Plain language that could replace the term “interoperability”

Symbol Vetting
• April 26, 2014: FHWA presentation requesting funding and testing of candidate symbols (early 2015)
• Summer 2014: Conduct initial review of candidate symbols • Fall 2014: Provide 5 or 6 candidate symbols to
regional contacts for ranking and comments • Late 2014: Ranked symbols presented to public for comment
– Local review – Social media – Newsletter
• Early 2015: FHWA for testing • June 2015: NCUTCD for comment • 2015-16: FHWA for inclusion in MUTCD
28
C&M Subcommittee
FHWA 2007 IOP ETC Symbol • Symbol was not
adopted since the NCUTCD believed it was premature and hadn’t been vetted among toll operators
• BTW—symbol used in Portugal
