EDITORIAL by Liz Robson
When preparing this edition I suddenly
realised that I have will have been editor for
three years by the time of the April meeting. I
have thoroughly enjoyed this editorship and
hope that I have managed to steer the journal
in a suitable direction as the challenges of
deadlines, attracting advertisers, spiralling
printing and postage costs are all travailed.
The magazine would not be possible without
the contributions of members and associates
hence all contributions have been much
appreciated. Now, a magazine should not be
static and ideas for future direction inclusions
would be welcome and could be discussed at
the November and April meetings.
This edition is understandably dominated by
our MVA Annual Wine Competition and we
have both David Bates Competition
Secretary’s Report on p.8 and the Judges View
by Sue Lobb on p.14. Both put over a very
positive message. Whilst on the subject of
being positive, the intrepid Alan Smith has
scientific paper about growing Scottish vines
under cover on p.16, and the Kerryvale
culinary initiatives on p. 23 make a delicious
read.
I had hoped to conduct another Wine Talk
interview, but time and competing priorities
prevented this, so I hope to do this for
another edition, providing, of course, I am
still elected as editor at the April meeting!

CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS
By Shaun Merrick
As we
approach
the winter
there are
three topics
that I would
l ike to draw
to members’ attention:
1. The UKVA-sponsored Vision &
Strategy Workshop at Vintners’
Hall held on 18th September.
2. Healthy Harvest – The impact of
losing plant protection products on
UK food production.
3. International Cool C l imate Wine
Symposium May 2016
These are al l big subjects concerning
the future of our industry but there
may be something, however small ,
that we can either contribute towards
or take as ideas to explore in within
our region. Better to do something
than to let others direct our business
futures without reference to our
needs and expectat ions?
Vision and Strategy
At the t ime of writ ing the report of
the Vis ion and Strategy Workshop has
not been publ ished and the fol lowing
are just my personal observations of
the event on the day with the benefit
of comments made by others.
There were a number of areas of
concern identif ied in the debating
process, which can be reduced
perhaps into 4 main areas of focus:
a. Reputat ion, Recognit ion and
Marketing
b. Qual ity Assurance;
c. Industry governance and
leadership
d. Business Sustainabil ity
I suspect that a number of working
parties wil l be formed to address
each of these subjects and the UKVA
wil l want to seek out members with
relevant ski l ls and interest to sit on
these working parties.
There was a sense overal l that
members want to be directed and led,
and for someone to provide the
‘magic’ answers. The challenge wil l
be to f ind that someone and to steer
a path with the industry in support as
a united body.
How should we respond to the report
when it is published and how should
we be represented best in further
discussions?
Healthy Harvest
Highl ighting the key points from the
introduction to this paper:
“While the rest of the world seems to
be responding to the challenge of
feeding a burgeoning global
population UK and EU product ion has,
at best, stal led. Some sectors, such as
cereals and f ield vegetables are
experiencing an actual production
decrease.
Although the reasons are complex,
one key dr iver is change to the
regulatory framework in which UK
agriculture and horticulture operates.
The undeniable fact is that over-
regulation, both at an EU and UK
level, severely hampers our abil ity to
provide the raw ingredients for the
food and drink we consume.

Marston Trussell Village Hall ready to embark on assessment and judging of the 91 entries to the

French Hybrid Red Wine Grapes Under Cover in Northeast Scotland

“We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!” Withnail, in Withnail and I (1986)
Introduction
The Grapevine Volume 42: Part 3
Well, perhaps not necessarily the finest wines here in Northeast Scotland, reasonable would suffice.
Although it has been suggested that global warming should lead to the advancement of grape
growing northwards, the weather here at 570N has been less favourable since the instability in the
jet-stream began in the summer of 2007. As a consequence, I have been exploring the possibilities
for covered growing in addition to testing Baltic grape varieties outdoors. Grapes have been grown
in greenhouses in Scotland going back to Victorian times [1-3]. Although the focus was usually on
