They conquered Macedonia and kept Philippi as one of its principal cities. A large part of Rome’s success was their great infra- structure. They built paved roads across the empire. Philippi was to benefit from this as the Via Egnatia came through the city. The Via Egnatia was built beginning in 145 BC and at its greatest extent connected Byzan- tium with the Adriatic ports. This route was Rome's primary artery to the east and Philippi was an important outpost along the road. Philippi was also significant during the Roman civil war that followed the assassi- nation of Julius Caesar . His heirs, Mark Antony and Octavian , confronted the as- sassins, Marcus Junius Brutus and Cassius , at the Battle of Philippi on the plain to the west of the city in 42 BC. Antony and Octavian were victorious in this final bat- tle. They released some of their veteran soldiers and colonized them in the city. In 30 BC, Octavian became Roman emperor , reorganized the colony, and estab- lished more settlers there, veterans possibly from the Praetorian Guard and other Italians. The territory of Philippi was later centuriated (divided into squares of land) and distributed to the colonists. The city kept its Macedonian walls, and its general plan was modified only partially by the construction of a forum. It was a "miniature Rome," under the municipal law of Rome and governed by two military officers who were appointed directly from Rome. The people had full privileges of Roman citizenship, including their own Senate and legislature, the right to vote, and im- munity from taxes.
