Further InformationIndividuals not falling into these categories should be paid the National Minimum Wage. Apprentices must be employed for at least 30 hours per week and fora sufficient period of time that allows them tocomplete their Apprenticeship.

How long do Apprenticeships take to complete? The duration of an Apprenticeship depends onthe standard or framework being followed andthe ability of the individual Apprentice. AnApprenticeship can take between one and fouryears to complete depending on the level ofApprenticeship, the Apprentice’s ability and theindustry sector.

Each Apprenticeship will have a minimum‘length of stay’ which is the minimum period oftime the Government determines it can take acandidate to complete. This period is dependenton several factors including age, experience andprevious qualifications and will vary from schemeto scheme. Wherever possible prior learning isaccredited to avoid duplication and enhance thelearning experience.

As a guide, an Intermediate Level 2Apprenticeship usually takes around 12 to 24months and an Advanced Level 3Apprenticeship around 24 months. As ourApprenticeships are tailored to individual needcompletion time can vary from candidate tocandidate. No Apprenticeship can last less than12 months.

Why choose Apprenticeships?Apprenticeships are a great way to improve theproductivity, loyalty and quality of a workforcethrough on the job training and learning. Theyare designed specifically around theoccupational needs of your business.Apprenticeships are a cost effective way todeliver skills for new employees and experiencedstaff. As a result, Apprentices are eager, motivated, flexible and loyal to the company thatinvests in them.

What exactly is an Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship is not a qualification in itselfbut a number of separately certifiedqualifications, courses and workplace training, making up the framework.

Apprenticeships develop practical andtheoretical skills designed to help employees reach a high level of competencyand performance.

Who pays for the training?Apprenticeships can be funded in a number ofways, and this can range from part funding to fullfunding depending on the size of your employer.

Currently funding is available through the SkillsFunding Agency to support the delivery oftraining, and can be accessed to support thedevelopment needs of new or existingemployees. Employers with 50 staff or more areexpected to contribute a min 10% towards thenegotiated cost of the Apprenticeship training.

What about apprenticeship funding for smallbusinesses that do not have to pay the levy? From May, 2017, employers with 49 staff or less, who offer apprenticeships to 16 to 18 year olds, willreceive 100 per cent of the cost of the training fromthe Government up to the maximum funding bands. Employers will have to pay 10% of the cost of theApprenticeship training for those aged 19 and overand the Government will pay the remaining 90 percent, up to the maximum funding bands. Thissupport applies to all age groups.

There will also be a new £1000 incentive for takingon an Apprentice aged 16 to 18. The incentive alsoapplies to care leavers, and those with an EHCPwho are aged 19-24.

Employers with more than 50 staff who are not levypayers will be expected to pay a min 10% of thenegotiated Apprenticeship training costs.

What are Apprenticeship ‘Trailblazer’ standards?Following a series of consultations the wayApprenticeships are delivered are graduallychanging as Apprenticeship standards areintroduced. Under the new system employers will play an enhanced role in the planning anddeliver of Apprenticeships.

New Apprenticeship standards are gradually beingintroduced across a range of programmes.

Myerscough College became the first land-basedcollege to introduce a standard, enrolling the firstlearner onto the New Golf GreenkeepingApprenticeship.

The guiding principles behind the new standards are:

• Employer-led Apprenticeship standards thattruly meet the needs of industry

• A simpler system of funding administered by employers

• Employer ownership of provider choice

The key benefits to employers of the reforms:

• Apprenticeship content is business specific andtailored to business needs

• Ownership of funding and buying power for training

• Access to higher and degree levelApprenticeships

Myerscough College are currently involved in thedesign and implementation of a large number ofApprenticeship standards across our range of land-based provision and further announcementswill be made once they are approved and ready for delivery.

Those with a payroll in excess of £3 million willfund Apprenticeships through their levy accountwithin the Digital Apprenticeship System (DAS).

Explain the much publicised Apprenticeship reforms? The government has set a challenging target ofrecruiting 3 million Apprentices by the year 2020.Reforms to Apprenticeships continue to growmomentum and we are now seeing theintroduction of a new range of ApprenticeshipStandards which will replace the ApprenticeshipFrameworks currently available. Currentframeworks will be phased out as Apprenticesmove across to the new standards.

In 2017 the newly formed Institute forApprenticeships will came into power, which willoversee the implantation of reforms and driveApprenticeship standards. April 2017 also sawthe introduction of the Apprenticeships levy, which will support this initiative and forms a keypart of wider initiatives to increase businessparticipation in Apprenticeships.

What is the Apprenticeships levy?Businesses whose annual payroll costs exceed£3 million will be required to contribute 0.5% oftheir payroll. Levy monies will help fund therecruitment of enthusiastic young people into the

UK workforce as well as support the skillsdevelopment of your existing employees.Small businesses will continue to receiveApprenticeship funding via a new digital voucher system, and will continue to make apercentage contribution towards the cost ofApprenticeships. The new digital apprenticeshipservice will allow employers to pay for theirtraining via digital voucher.

Myerscough College can help you minimise therisk and maximise the benefits of this levy.
