People from all walks of life serve in the Cadet Forces, either through their school in the Combined Cadet Forces, or by joining individual Service Cadet organisa-
tions.
If you take a cross section of the most prominent people in Britian today, you’d be suprised how many of them were once cadets, such
as a Dean of Westminster, the novelist Sebastian Faulks, Chris Martin from Coldplay,
David Walliams, Jeremy Irons, Tom Lucy who was an Olympic Silver Medallist in rowing in the two thousand
and eight. James Hickman who was an Olympic and CommonWealth Gold Medal swimmer and
Lee Deighton who was the author of ‘The Ipcress File’ Filepng&docid=8biJRrMu-

news came more suddenly. The wife of an AH-64 Apache
helicopter pilot, she was just be-ginning to reckon with her husband
Ian’s stress and strain. Rebecca urged Ian to see the flight surgeon, call the
Pentagon’s crisis hotline. He did--and waited on the line for more than 45 minutes. His final
text to his wife: “STILL on hold.” Rebecca found him that night in their bedroom. He had shot himself
in the neck. Leslie McCaddon sensed that the enemy had returned when she overheard her husband on the phone with
their 8-year-old daughter. “Do me a favor,” he told the little girl. “Give your mommy a hug and tell her that I love her.” She knew for
certain when she got his message a few minutes later. “This is the hardest e-mail I’ve ever written,” Dr. Michael
McCaddon wrote. “Please always tell my
children how much I love them, and most importantly, never, ever let them find out how I died ... I love you. Mike” She grabbed a phone, sounded every alarm, but by the time his co-workers found his body hanging in the hospital call room. Both Army captains died on March 21, a continent apart. The next day, and the next day, and the next, more soldiers would die by their own hand, one every day on average, about as many as are dying on the battlefield. These are active-duty person-nel, still under the military’s control and protection. Among all veterans, a suicide occurs every 80 minutes, round the clock. Have suicides spiked because of the strain of fighting two wars? Morrison flew 70 missions in Iraq over nine months but never engaged the enemy directly. McCaddon was an ob-gyn resident at an Army hospital in Hawaii who had never been to Iraq or Afghanistan. In the three days before he died, Morrison went looking for help six times, all in vain. THE ARMED FORCES- WHAT THEY SAYThere are more than 220 different roles in the Army. Some are full-time roles, others you can do in your spare time with the Territorials. You might choose a role that develops your existing skills, or that helps you to learn new ones. Whichever job you choose and whatever you want to achieve, we’ll do everything we can to make sure that you succeed. Troops from 21 Engineer Regiment have replaced an important bridge linking the main highways and local communities in the city of Gereshk in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand Province. The bridge, known as the ‘Golden Egg’, sup-ports the work of the Afghanistan National Army (ANA) helping them to maintain commu-nications and operate freely across the region. The original bridge was blown-up by insurgents and replaced by the Danish who christened it ‘Golden Egg’, a traditional name given to a bridge made for armoured vehicles. The Danish bridge was temporary and 21 Engineer Regi-ment has now replaced it with a permanent structure. It is different to other bridges as the simple design allows for repairs and maintenance by local tradesmen using local materials. It is also now overlooked by an ANA checkpoint and has additional measures in place to prevent the insurgents from targeting it. The engineers have just arrived in the region and in the next six months they will be assisting with local infrastructure projects. They will also be preparing checkpoints to handover to Afghan National Security Forces as they take the lead for their own security.
