VERYGOOD!
GROUNDWATER GOT SOME ATTENTION!
Why is groundwater often neglected at major international water
conferences (Stockholm, WWF)?Let me make some
generalizations…
• Not ‘sexy’• Not much money in it (mega-projects,
profits, corruption opportunities)• Hard to showcase; projects
unimpressive (donors, national pride)• Water source at point-of-use; people
have control – ‘populist resource’• Often ‘under the radar’ - no reason to get
‘worked up’ because of environmental issues, displacement of people, etc.
• Doesn’t fit well with existing paradigm: IWRM
• Session 3.4.1: A Hidden Resource-Sustainably Managing Groundwater for the Future (IUCN, AWRA, OSU)
• Fundación Marcelino Botín Side Event –‘Silent Revolution’
• Nonrenewable groundwater • Changing Climes, Changing Times –
Transboundary Groundwater Side Event• Session 3.4.2: Strategic Framework for
Effective and Sustainable Water Resources Management and Protection
• Transboundary aquifer map unveiled• IUCN Side Event
Session 3.4.1 A Hidden Resource: Sustainably Managing Groundwater for
the Future•What are the main challenges to be tackled and solutions proposed for the future of groundwater resources?
•How will climate change affect groundwater resources?
•What will be the roles of technical, legal and institutional aspects to realize sustainablegroundwater management for future?
• What is the role of nonrenewable groundwater and aquifer storage and recovery ?
20
Globally, over 2 billion people rely on groundwater for their
daily supply
•How can the growing dilemma around groundwater be overcome?
•Can sharing experiences on better ways of managing, developing and protecting groundwater resources for the future be a step in the right direction?
