What interesting lifestyle difference between the Eastern Coast of the U.S. versus the Western Coast of the U.S. do you think I learned of back in 1998?

Students don’t need to become
“lifelong learners.” They only to learn the
basics.

Less about being better informed to participate in
political discourse…
More about being able to make current events
relevant in my English class

My internship: Between July 13, 1998, and August 7, 1998, I created discussion prompts and entire lessons that became part of the C-SPAN website for teachers.

My internship: I also traveled around Washington, D.C., with broadcast teams to help cover events going on around town that would spark possible political discourse.

Completing this first goal was a no-brainer. Just being there in the federal hub was truly educational.
Two other teachers (social studies) were also interns there that summer, and they were both very instrumental in teaching me about political “Socratic seminars.”
My career—after earning my Master’s—shifted in its direction, so this goal didn’t really pan out.

I won’t say that I love discussing politics any more than I used to, but I can always guide those with tunnel vision to see the bigger picture of national and international policy.
Most people try to cram seeing Washington, D.C.’s sights into a long weekend family trip, and it can’t be enjoyed that way.

People on the East Coast don’t respect innovative public education.
@NevadaTeacher The sweats began as soon as she said over 5 million people would be watching. I never agreed to answer angry callers on a talk show, C-SPAN!

People who like to vent will call talk shows just to vent because they can.

An armed Montana gunman entered the U.S. Capitol, trying to enter the office of a top Republican Representative. The gunman began firing, ultimately taking to lives of two Capitol police officers.

Fellow intern—Mr. Rodey—and I had already been assigned to observe “The Washington Journal’s” camera control room the day following that unfortunate tragedy, and it turned out to be an amazing learning experience about how powerful television can be.

Best moment:July 25, 1998, 7:00 a.m.
For 60 minutes, unscreened callers expressed genuine compassion for the heroic officers as TV directors gracefully wove together images from around the Capitol that very morning. It was a skilled and beautiful visual manipulation.

Question: Would I recommend an internship at C-SPAN to another teacher?
Answer: Without hesitation, but don’t agree to guest host any call-in talk shows?
Do you have questions for me?
My Internship @
Anecdotes: How did I use them to tie my presentation’s other pieces together?
Presentation Skills: How many times did you catch me actually reading my slides’ content to you? How do you think I avoided doing that?
