you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance

Improving Unemployment RateMeans Fewer Weeks of FederalJobless Benefits in MaineAUGUSTA – A steady decline inMaine’s unemployment rate has led toMaine being removed from the federaldesignated list of “high unemploymentstates.” While the move representsmore welcome news of an improvingeconomy, the U.S. Department ofLabor notified the state this week thatlong-term unemployed workers will nolonger be eligible for up to 13 weeksfederally-funded unemploymentprovided under the Extended Benefits(EB) program.

“Our unemployment rate droppedduring 2011 and jobless claims forbenefits were lower in 11 of the last12 months as compared to the sametime the year before,” said MaineLabor Commissioner Robert Winglass.“Although seasonal factors willcontinue to play a role in the jobmarket from month to month, overallworkforce conditions are improving.”

The statewide seasonally adjustedunemployment rate for Maine was 7.0percent in December — down from7.5 percent one year ago, andsignificantly lower than the U.S.unemployment rate of 8.5 percent.Nearly 3,000 more Mainers wereemployed in December comparedwith the same period in 2010 and thenumber of unemployed dropped by3,800.

Federal EB benefits are available toworkers in high unemployment states, but only after they have exhausted all

regular unemployment insurancebenefits and the up to 47 weeks offederally-funded unemploymentbenefits provided under theEmergency UnemploymentCompensation (EUC) program.

For the approximately 1,850 Maineworkers who may be eligible forunemployment under the EB program, the last payable week for benefits willbe the week ending February 18,2012.

“EB represents the final weeks ofbenefits for the longest-termunemployed,” said Laura Boyett, director of the Maine Department ofLabor Bureau of UnemploymentCompensation. “Generally, theworkers who are receivingunemployment under EB have alreadycollected up to 73 weeks of benefitsunder other state and federalunemployment programs.”

Maine CareerCenters have rampedup outreach to workers who areexpected to lose benefits as the resultof the end of EB unemployment inMaine. Workers are beingencouraged to visit CareerCenters toattend employment workshops or meetone-on-one with a career counselor.

“CareerCenters are an importantresource for people looking for a newjob, their first job, or a differentcareer,” said Commissioner Winglass.“Over 3,300 available Maine jobs

If you are active online with blogs and social networks, managing your brand can be as simple asGoogling yourself and using Google Alerts to stay updated on any new mentions or publications of yourname, your websites, your blogs, your articles and more. When offline, managing your brand can be aseasy as carefully reviewing your performance evaluations at work and/or seeking consistent feedback fromfamily, friends, supervisors and other career stakeholders to make sure your personal communications arebeing effectively transmitted and correctly received.

1. It is true that people are not products. However, often we choose one product over other similar productsbecause of its brand (a.k.a. its unique and differentiatingvalue) and how that value fulfills our need in a givensituation. This holds true for people, as well. Each personhas a unique and differentiating value, or personal brand, that fulfills an organization's need in a given situationbetter than other similar people.2. We should all care about our personal brandsbecause they combine our strengths, ourpersonalities, our reputations, our values and our goals allinto one communicable, unique and differentiating valuethat we bring to the table.3. Personal branding isn't narcissistic unless takento the extreme. Promoting your strengths and yourunique and differentiating value to your careerstakeholders is healthy and important for your own self-fulfillment and achievement in life. As more and moreprofessionals brand themselves, it is essential that youestablish your own brand in order to stand out in your jobsearch and career development.4. Keeping track of your online reputation withsimple online tools does not make you lessconfident. The Internet is a vast and ever-evolvingplatform on which it is much easier to miss "fires"threatening our personal brands and reputations.

Therefore, we must fight fire with fire to stay on top ofeverything and protect our reputations and ourinvestment.5. Your online image is just a part of your overallimage and personal brand. If you invest time, energyand even money into your own personal development andimage offline, it makes sense that you will want youronline image to match.Personal branding is simply creating, establishing andcommunicating a unique and memorable value andreputation, and personal brand management is theconsistent upkeep and maintenance of this value in thespheres in which you choose to exist and be active, bothonline and offline.Brand managers establish and protect the value that yourfavorite chosen brands of products deliver, so be yourown personal brand manager and protect all that youhave to offer!

As I continue to surf the net for new articles about or related to this topic, I have beenamazed at the number of voices against these concepts. Here are just some of the questionsand comments I have come across from such voices:

While I respect and understand where each of these points is coming from, I must reinforcethe importance of personal brand management in response to each one.

1. "People are not brands, because people are not products."

2. "Who cares about your personal brand?"

3. "Personal branding is narcissistic."

4. "Are you so unsure of who you are that you mustreaffirm yourself via Internet tools?"

5. "Why is it so important to make sure your online imageappears the way you want it to?"

Your answer to thisquestion should be"YES!" unless, ofcourse, you are acelebrity or anyother globalpersonality whocan afford anentire marketingteam to manageyour image andreputation.

We should all betaking charge increating, establishing andmanaging our ownpersonal brandsonline and offline.Once you havebegun to establishyours, managing itcan be a piece ofcake.

LastMinuteTax Tips(ARA) – Are you among the millions ofAmericans who scramble every year tomeet Uncle Sam's income tax filingdeadline?

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS)estimates that one-third of Americanswait until the last minute to file theirpersonal income tax returns (for 2011income tax returns, the deadline hasbeen extended to April 17). If youcount yourself among that group, it'simportant to realize the costs could beadding up - from missing importantdeductions that could affect the amountof your refund to incurring penaltiesfrom the IRS for not filing on time.

The keys to paying exactly what youowe and obtaining a refund sooner aretimely filing, familiarity with relevant taxdeductions and credits, and properorganization, according toFindLaw.com, the nation's leadingwebsite for free legal information. Ifyou don't have the time or inclination to

become familiar with the U.S. taxcode, consider getting the help of aprofessional tax preparer or a taxattorney, or at the very least using taxsoftware that can guide you throughincome tax form preparation.

To help you make the most of taxseason, here are some additional tipsfrom FindLaw.com:

Start a file. Somewhere in yourhome, create a place where you canstore all the documents you'll need tocomplete your taxes. When W-2forms, mortgage statements and othertax-related documents are mailed toyou, put them into this location, file orbox them, and check them off as theycome in. In addition, keep receipts ofpotentially deductible items such asmedical and dental expenses, tuition, daycare and after-school careexpenses.

Seek advice for your smallbusiness. Whether by choice or out ofnecessity, many Americans havedecided to go into business forthemselves as a result of the "greatrecession." From the moment you makethis choice, go to an accountant whospecializes in working with smallbusiness owners and get advice onhow to properly and accurately recordall of your business expenses andrevenue. Accurate bookkeeping isessential to ensuring accurate payment

of the taxes your business owes. Anounce of prevention will go a long waytoward helping avoid an IRS audit.

Get help. Don't have time to figure outall the ongoing changes to taxregulations? Don't have the interest? Then get the help of a professional taxpreparer immediately after you receiveW-2 forms from your employer in orderto complete and file your taxes beforethe filing deadline. The IRS offers help, too. Visit www.irs.gov for informationabout filing your income taxes. Checkout IRS publication 17, "Your FederalIncome Tax," on the IRS website. Ithighlights everything you need to knowabout filing your personal income taxreturn. The IRS also offers help over thephone and interactive tax assistancethrough its website.

Go electronic. Every year, more andmore people file their taxeselectronically. Why? Because it offersease of use and quicker tax refunds, which are typically issued two weeksafter filing. In 2010, nearly 100 millionAmericans (70 percent of tax filers)filed their taxes electronically, using off-the-shelf tax preparation software or theIRS website's filing page, according toIRS estimates. Electronic filing canreduce math errors and the cost ofpaying for return receipts at the postoffice. When you file electronically, consider using direct deposit, which

authorizes the IRS to deposit yourrefund directly into your checkingaccount instead of sending you acheck in the mail.

Don't avoid filing. Some people, especially those who are self-employedor have been laid off, worry that theycan't pay the full amount of taxes theyowe. Therefore, they avoid filing. Don'tdo it. It will only make matters worse.First, give yourself time by filing for anextension, which gives you up to sixmonths to file a return. Second, it'sbetter to pay something rather thannothing if you owe on your taxes. Anon-payment of your taxes can result inpenalties and interest. Even a partialpayment can reduce your penaltiesand shows good faith if you're audited.

Keep your returns. In the event thatyou're audited, it's important to have upto seven years of previously filedincome tax returns on file. These arealso useful in preparing current incometax returns, and may be valuable toyour estate's executor if you becomeincapacitated or die unexpectedly.

Plan ahead. Tax regulations changeevery year. To lower your tax burden, start keeping good records now andbecome familiar with changes to thetax code for 2012 by consulting withan experienced tax attorney, accountant, or by visiting the IRSwebsite, www.irs.gov.
